To move a private Conan Exiles dedicated server from the UE4 build to Enhanced (UE5), stop the old server, make an independent copy of ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db, install the Enhanced dedicated-server build, place the copy in the matching Enhanced save directory, preserve the appropriate configuration and mod files, and start Enhanced once to create its converted save. The conversion is one-way: UE5 can read a UE4 database, but UE4 cannot read the converted database. Keep the original file until you are certain you will not need a Legacy fallback.
Official Steam PC servers are migrated by Funcom rather than by individual owners. Exiled Lands characters, followers and bases move forward, while Isle of Siptah structures cannot be preserved at their old coordinates after the maps are combined. The steps below separate private-server work from official-server consequences so you can choose the safe path before downtime.
What the Enhanced migration changes
Enhanced is the Unreal Engine 5 edition of Conan Exiles. A UE4 save is not overwritten in place when the updated server first runs. Funcom says UE4 save files remain in their original location and are converted into separate Conan Exiles Enhanced saves. That separation gives you a useful pre-conversion checkpoint, but it does not create a supported reverse migration: a database that has been converted for UE5 cannot be transferred back to a UE4 server.
The file that carries the important persistent state for a dedicated server is ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db. It contains player characters and structures, so treat it as the critical migration artifact. Configuration files, server settings and mods are separate from the database and must be reviewed for the Enhanced installation rather than assumed to follow automatically.

Choose your migration path before scheduling downtime
Private dedicated server
You control the shutdown, backup, file placement and first launch. This is the path described in the procedure below. It applies whether the server runs on a machine you administer or through a hosting company that exposes the required files and build selection.
Official Steam PC server
Funcom performs the platform migration. You cannot copy an official server database yourself. Characters, followers and Exiled Lands bases are carried forward, but Siptah construction requires preparation before downtime because the combined world changes physical coordinates.

Legacy fallback requirement
If your community may need to continue on UE4, make the backup and, where appropriate, move characters through the in-game transfer system before anyone starts the UE5 server. Once the UE5 database has been converted, keeping a running UE4 fallback requires the untouched pre-conversion copy; the converted file itself is not usable by UE4.
Private-server migration: complete procedure
1. Announce a freeze and stop the UE4 process
Tell players when the world will close and stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Do not copy game.db while the server is writing to it. Confirm that no second instance, restart task or control-panel action can immediately launch the old process again.
- Record the current server name, map, difficulty, multipliers, admin list and scheduled tasks.
- Note the active mod list and load order.
- Write down the exact install location so you can distinguish the old and Enhanced directories.
2. Make an independent database backup
Copy ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db to storage outside the server’s save directory, such as an external USB hard drive or a separate server backup drive. Give the copy a dated name that identifies it as the UE4 source, for example game-ue4-pre-enhanced-2026-10-15.db. Do not move the only copy; use copy-and-verify so the original remains available.
After copying, check that the backup exists, has a plausible file size, and can be opened or at least read by your backup system. Keep a second copy on a different physical or administrative failure domain if the world is valuable. The point of this step is not merely disaster recovery: it is your only reliable route to a Legacy server after conversion.

3. Install or select the Enhanced dedicated-server build
In Steam, install the Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated-server application or select the Enhanced branch offered by your host. The Steam directory is renamed from Conan Exiles Dedicated Server to Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server. Update launch scripts, service definitions, monitoring rules and backup jobs that contain the old path.
Do not delete the UE4 directory yet. Leaving it intact makes it easier to compare configuration, retrieve an overlooked file and prove which database is the original. Disk space is a practical consideration: Funcom lists the Enhanced client at 68 GB and the previous client at approximately 120 GB; the dedicated-server footprint and free-space requirement can differ, so your host must confirm its own capacity.
4. Prepare the Enhanced save directory
Locate the corresponding ConanSandbox/Saved directory inside the Enhanced installation. If the Enhanced server has never run, its directory may not contain a converted save yet. Preserve the required configuration and mod files using the host’s documented layout, and make sure every mod has an Enhanced-compatible version before launch.
Copy the backed-up UE4 game.db into the Enhanced server’s ConanSandbox/Saved directory. Avoid renaming unrelated files or replacing the entire save folder wholesale; the objective is to provide the known-good database while retaining the Enhanced installation’s expected structure.
5. Review configuration and mods
Compare the old and new configuration files line by line. Reapply server name, password, administrator identifiers, gameplay multipliers, ban lists, map selection and any scheduled settings through the Enhanced host’s controls. A configuration file can be syntactically valid yet point to an old path or an unavailable mod.
- Confirm the map setting matches the world you intend to open.
- Check that every mod is installed for the Enhanced build and appears in the intended load order.
- Remove obsolete launch arguments only when the Enhanced documentation or host panel identifies them as unsupported.
- Keep a copy of the final Enhanced configuration alongside the database backup.
6. Start Enhanced once and let conversion finish
Start the Enhanced server with no players connected for the first boot. The initial run reads the UE4 database and creates the separate Enhanced save. Do not interrupt the process merely because the first start takes longer than a normal restart; there is no universal migration-time guarantee, and hardware, database size and mod processing affect duration.

Watch the server console and host logs for a completed world initialization. If the process exits before the world becomes available, stop it and troubleshoot the first error before attempting repeated launches. Never point the conversion process at your only backup.
7. Match client and server versions
Funcom’s server FAQ requires the client version to match the server version. Ask every player to update to the same Enhanced build before joining. A player still running UE4, an older Enhanced patch or an unsupported store version can fail to connect even when the server itself is healthy.
8. Verify the converted world
Join with an administrator account and test the essentials before reopening the server publicly:
- Confirm that the expected map loads and the server name and password are correct.
- Check several player characters, inventories, clans, followers and spawn locations.
- Inspect representative bases for ownership, placed objects, storage contents and permissions.
- Test harvesting, crafting, combat, decay settings and any custom multipliers that matter to your community.
- Join with a non-administrator account to verify ordinary permissions and chat access.
- Test each Enhanced-compatible mod in a controlled area, then review logs for missing assets or repeated errors.
- Run a fresh backup of the new Enhanced save before removing any old installation files.
What happens on official servers
Exiled Lands
Funcom states that official Steam PC Exiled Lands servers move to UE5 with characters, followers and bases carried forward. Players should still expect a maintenance window and a client update, but they do not perform the database-copy procedure used by private owners.
Isle of Siptah
Siptah is the important exception. Enhanced combines Isle of Siptah and Exiled Lands on one server, and the physical coordinates change. Because structures cannot be preserved at their old positions in the same way, dismantle Siptah bases before downtime and place recoverable materials in follower inventories. If several people share a clan, transfer follower ownership to individual characters where necessary so the intended player can recover those followers after the change.
The combined world permits travel between the two maps without restarting the server. Access to Isle of Siptah still requires ownership of its DLC; merging maps does not grant DLC ownership to accounts that do not have it.

Preserve a character with the in-game transfer system
Character transfer is a separate safeguard from copying a private-server database. Use it when you need a character available on another supported server type or when you want to preserve a character before an irreversible upgrade.
- Enter the source server and press Esc.
- Choose Character.
- Select Server Transfer.
- Read the destination and restriction messages, then confirm only after checking that the destination is the one you intend to use.
Funcom describes the permitted direction as Official PvP → Official PvE-C → Official PvE → Private Dedicated → Single Player/Co-op, with a one-day cooldown. The restrictions are material: a single-player character cannot be imported to a dedicated server; a private-server character cannot be imported to an official server; and a PvE character cannot be transferred to PvP. Inventory and other transfer rules shown in the game interface govern what arrives, so do not treat a transfer as a complete base backup.
Platform and hosting checks
Steam-only rollout
Enhanced is a PC Steam update in the stated rollout. Funcom says all official PC servers move to UE5, while Epic Games Store and Windows Store players cannot access official servers from launch under that Steam-only arrangement. A private host may expose a different set of client options, but the connecting client still has to match the server build.

Host support is not universal. Funcom says it is working with some providers on UE5 readiness but cannot collaborate with every company that offers Conan Exiles hosting. Obtain written answers to these questions before scheduling downtime:
- Is the Enhanced dedicated-server build available now, and what is its exact folder or branch name?
- Can support import an existing UE4
game.dbwithout overwriting the original? - Where are Enhanced configuration and mod files stored?
- Which mods are supported, and can you control their load order?
- Can you download and independently restore a backup?
- What happens to scheduled restarts, custom launch arguments and automated backups after the folder rename?
- Can the host keep the UE4 files stopped but intact while you validate Enhanced?
Do not infer compatibility from a host’s generic “Conan Exiles” listing. The provider must confirm the Enhanced build, migration procedure and restore controls for your specific plan.

The server starts as a new world
Stop the server and verify that game.db is in the Enhanced installation’s own ConanSandbox/Saved directory, not the old UE4 directory or a similarly named folder. Check file permissions and confirm that the service account can read the file. Restore the dated backup to a clean Enhanced save location rather than repeatedly replacing files while the server is running.

Players receive a version-mismatch error
Check the server build number and have every affected player update or select the matching Enhanced branch. A client from another storefront may be unable to join an official Steam server even when its displayed game version looks similar.

Stop the server, identify the first mod-related error in the log, and confirm that the mod author provides an Enhanced-compatible release. Test with a documented mod set rather than deleting the database. If removing a mod changes placed content, restore the pre-change Enhanced backup before further testing.
A host cannot find the old save
Ask support which directory their control panel maps to the Enhanced instance. The folder rename can leave backups, scripts or file managers pointed at Conan Exiles Dedicated Server while the active installation is Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server. Have the host identify the exact path before uploading a replacement database.
You need to return to UE4
Stop Enhanced, preserve its files for diagnosis, and use the untouched pre-conversion UE4 database with the original UE4 installation. Do not copy the converted Enhanced database into UE4; Funcom states that the reverse read is not supported. Any progress made only after conversion will not exist in the older database unless you separately recorded or transferred it.

- Back up the validated Enhanced save and retain the original UE4 backup.
Official Siptah-player checklist
- Dismantle Siptah bases before the maintenance window.
- Put recoverable materials in follower inventories.
- Transfer follower ownership to individual characters when clan recovery requires it.
- Verify DLC ownership for every player who needs Siptah access after the maps merge.

What is not guaranteed
There is no universal migration-time estimate, host-by-host compatibility table or single mod-compatibility list covering every private provider. Treat those as operational facts to verify with your host and mod maintainers rather than assumptions. The documented guarantees are narrower: UE4 databases are readable by Enhanced, the save is converted into a separate Enhanced save on first run, clients must match servers, and the reverse UE5-to-UE4 database transfer is unsupported.
