You can usually change VPN providers with little or no avoidable exposure if you stage the move: select and install the replacement while the old tunnel still protects you, configure its network lock, DNS and IPv6 behavior, test the actual routing, and cancel the old service only after the new connection works. A brief gap is still possible if an app crashes, a device changes networks or a setting is incompatible, so do not assume that a feature label guarantees protection.

This guide explains how to change providers without exposing your IP unnecessarily, how to check for DNS and IPv6 leaks, what to verify on each device, and how to close the old account without confusing cancellation with deletion.

What a privacy-preserving switch actually requires

A VPN change has two separate risks. First, the old tunnel may stop before the replacement is ready, leaving your ordinary public IP and unencrypted traffic visible to the network. Second, the new app may connect while routing, DNS or IPv6 settings still send some traffic outside the tunnel. The safest sequence keeps the old subscription and connection available until the replacement has been installed and checked.

No provider can promise identical behavior on every operating system, protocol or release. “Kill switch,” “network lock” and similar names are marketing labels rather than a universal technical standard. Reethika Ramesh, Leonid Evdokimov, Diwen Xue and Roya Ensafi wrote in their 2022 VPNalyzer paper: “There is no standard jargon for these features, and the names and capabilities of simple settings are often exaggerated by VPN providers.” Treat a policy or feature page as a claim to investigate, not as proof that every packet will be protected.

How do I switch VPN providers without exposing my IP?

Use this order: evaluate the replacement, keep the old VPN active, install and secure the new account, configure its protection settings, test a live connection and deliberate outage, then cancel the old service. The individual steps are below.

Choose the replacement before ending the old service

Read the privacy policy as a data-flow description

Check what account information, connection information, diagnostic data and payment records the provider says it collects, why it collects them and how long it retains them. Look for a dated independent assessment and read its scope: an audit of a particular application build or infrastructure does not verify every server, platform or future release. A policy that says “no logs” still needs interpretation of the terms used and the exceptions described elsewhere.

Confirm device and protocol support

List every device that needs protection: computers, phones, tablets, routers and any other endpoint. Verify that the replacement supplies an app or supported configuration for each one and supports the protocol you intend to use. Check whether the features you need are available on your platform rather than assuming that a desktop feature exists on mobile or a router configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investigate outage behavior

Find the platform-specific documentation for the kill switch, network lock or equivalent. Determine whether it is enabled by default, what traffic it blocks, and whether it remains active while the app is starting, sleeping, reconnecting or being closed. Some implementations block only selected applications; others stop all network traffic. Mullvad’s official help documentation, for example, says its app blocks all internet traffic until the VPN reconnects or the user disconnects from or quits the app. That statement describes that app and should not be generalized to another service.

Check DNS and IPv6 claims

Find out whether the app sends DNS queries through the tunnel, how it handles custom DNS or encrypted DNS, and whether IPv6 is tunneled, disabled or handled separately. A provider that protects IPv4 while allowing native IPv6 traffic can reveal destinations or your address. The replacement’s instructions should explain how to reconcile device-level private DNS, browser secure DNS and any manually entered resolver.

Question to ask What to verify Why it matters
Data practices Collected fields, purpose, retention and independent evidence with a date and scope Policy language is a starting point, not a measurement of current behavior
Outage protection Platform availability, default state and whether all traffic is blocked A label can hide major differences in failure behavior
DNS VPN-provided resolver, custom-DNS rules and interaction with encrypted DNS Queries can bypass the tunnel even when the public IP changes
IPv6 and routing Whether IPv6 is tunneled or disabled and whether all intended traffic uses the VPN interface Unsupported address families or split routes can leak traffic
Usability Devices, protocols and settings that remain enabled without breaking required access A protection setting that users must routinely disable is unreliable in practice

Stage 1: Keep the old connection available while installing the replacement

  1. Do not disconnect or uninstall the old app yet. Leave its tunnel connected while you obtain the replacement. If your current VPN has a network-lock option, leave that protection enabled during the transition.
  2. Download the new app from its official site or your device’s app store. Avoid repackaged installers and verify that you selected the correct operating-system build.
  3. Create and secure the new account. Use a unique password and enable every account-security option the provider offers, such as multifactor authentication. OpenVPN’s legal materials state that customers are responsible for securing their authentication credentials, so do not reuse the password from the old service.
  4. Install on every device that needs coverage. Installing on one computer does not protect a phone, tablet or router. Record which devices will use the new account and which will remain outside the VPN by design.

Installing the second client while the first tunnel is active may produce a warning about another VPN profile. Read it rather than accepting a default that silently removes the old profile. Some operating systems allow only one active VPN tunnel; the important point is to keep a working fallback until you are ready to test the replacement.

Stage 2: Configure the replacement before ordinary browsing

Turn on the strongest outage control available

Open the new app’s settings and enable its kill switch, network lock or equivalent before connecting for normal use. Look for separate choices such as “always-on,” “block connections without VPN” or per-app exclusions. Read the provider’s explanation of whether the control works during startup and reconnection and whether local-network access is exempted. Proton’s documentation describes a kill switch that blocks network traffic and an always-on mode that reconnects; these are examples of provider-specific behavior, not a guarantee for other applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After enabling the control, note how to recover if it blocks all traffic: usually reconnecting the app or deliberately disabling the lock. Do not leave an unknown lock enabled while troubleshooting a critical connection, and do not create exclusions for browsers or messaging apps unless you understand that those apps can then bypass the tunnel.

Reconcile DNS settings

Before connecting, inspect three layers:

  • Device: manual DNS addresses, private-DNS mode and profiles installed by a previous VPN.
  • Browser: secure-DNS or encrypted-DNS settings that can send queries directly to a browser-selected resolver.
  • VPN app: its internal resolver, split-DNS rules and any option for custom DNS.

Remove obsolete custom entries or follow the replacement provider’s documented exception when a custom resolver is required. Proton warns that manually configured third-party DNS and encrypted DNS can interfere with its own DNS protections. Do not assume that changing the browser setting alone changes the operating system’s resolver, or vice versa.

Decide how IPv6 should work

Check the replacement’s instructions for your platform. It may tunnel IPv6, disable it while connected or provide another controlled method. If the provider does not support IPv6 on your device, leaving native IPv6 active can allow applications to use it outside the VPN. Do not disable IPv6 globally without considering local-network requirements; use the provider’s supported setting and verify the result after connecting.

Confirm the routing scope

Check whether the app uses full-device routing or split tunneling. Full-device mode is appropriate when the goal is to protect all ordinary traffic. Split tunneling can intentionally leave selected applications or local addresses outside the tunnel, but every exclusion is a potential disclosure path. Review per-app rules, local-network bypasses and “allow LAN” options before testing.

Will my internet be unprotected while I change VPNs?

It can be, but careful sequencing reduces the avoidable gap. The old tunnel protects traffic until you disconnect it; the new app’s network lock should block traffic during a failed connection if its implementation covers the traffic you generate. Nevertheless, a brief exposure can occur during an application crash, a network handoff, a reboot, an operating-system VPN conflict or a setting that does not cover IPv6 or a particular app. The process therefore aims to reduce risk, not to promise a mathematically uninterrupted tunnel.

For a particularly sensitive device, connect the replacement before leaving a trusted network, avoid starting the change during a video call or transaction, and keep mobile data or Wi-Fi changes to a minimum until verification is complete.

Stage 3: Connect and verify the new configuration

  1. Connect the replacement. Wait for the app to report a successful tunnel and note the selected protocol, server region and connection state.
  2. Check the public address. Use a reputable IP-checking page or an equivalent network diagnostic and confirm that the address and apparent location correspond to the VPN connection rather than your normal connection. Record the result only as a snapshot of this device at this moment.
  3. Check DNS resolution. Run a DNS-leak test while connected and inspect the resolver organizations and locations reported. They should match the VPN path or the resolver the provider explicitly documents. A changed public IP alone does not prove that DNS requests follow the same path.
  4. Check IPv6 separately. Use a test that reports IPv6 connectivity and address information. If your real IPv6 address appears, follow the provider’s supported remediation rather than assuming the IPv4 result covers it.
  5. Test the network lock deliberately. With no sensitive activity running, disconnect the tunnel using the app’s disconnect control or temporarily interrupt the connection in a way the provider documents. Confirm that ordinary internet traffic stops. Reconnect and verify that traffic resumes only after the tunnel is established.
  6. Test the applications you actually use. Open browsers, mail, collaboration tools and any application that must work through the VPN. Check that split-tunnel rules, local-network access and required services behave as intended.

A spot check describes this device, network and software version at the time of the test. It does not audit every server, protocol, application or future release. Repeat the checks after major app or operating-system updates and whenever you change DNS, split-tunnel or IPv6 settings.

What the measured evidence says about feature labels

The VPNalyzer study by University of Michigan researchers and independent collaborators, presented at the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium in 2022, conducted 230 experiments involving 80 unique VPN providers. In a custom secure-configuration case study of 39 top providers, it reported traffic leaks in 10 providers; six of those had a “kill switch” feature enabled. In the broader measurements, the paper reported traffic leaks during tunnel failure in 26 providers, DNS leaks during tunnel failure in eight and IPv6 traffic leaks in five.

Those figures are historical results from the tested services and configurations, not a current market ranking. They show why a named feature, a privacy policy or a promotional claim should be followed by a device-specific test. The study does not establish which providers are safe today, and it does not replace reading the current documentation for the app you are installing.

How do I check for DNS leaks after changing VPNs?

First connect the replacement and pause applications that may generate background traffic. Run a DNS-leak test, examine every resolver listed and compare it with the provider’s documented DNS design. Then disconnect the VPN and repeat only if your test environment is safe; the comparison can reveal whether the app’s lock blocks queries when the tunnel is down. If a third-party resolver appears unexpectedly, inspect device private-DNS settings, browser secure DNS, profiles left by the old client and any manual resolver entries. Apply the replacement provider’s platform-specific fix, reconnect and test again.

Do not treat one clean result as proof for all networks. Captive portals, corporate DNS policies, browser-specific resolvers and split tunneling can change what is observed. Keep a note of the operating system, app version and settings used so you can reproduce the check after updates.

Stage 4: End the previous service only after verification

  1. Identify the billing channel. The cancellation path differs if you paid the old provider directly, through a mobile app store or through another marketplace.
  2. Check the renewal date and cancellation deadline. Save the confirmation page or email and verify whether cancellation stops renewal immediately or at the end of the paid period.
  3. Review refund terms. A cancellation request and a refund request may be separate, and eligibility can depend on the purchase channel and jurisdiction.
  4. Cancel automatic renewal. Confirm that the account shows a non-renewing status before removing the old app.
  5. Request account deletion separately if desired. Ending billing does not necessarily erase an account or data. Ask the provider directly what deletion covers and what records must be retained.
  6. Remove the old client last. Export any configuration you must retain, then uninstall the old app and remove its VPN profile only after the replacement has passed your tests.

Exact cancellation and deletion instructions cannot be universal: they depend on the old provider, purchase platform and jurisdiction. Check those terms directly rather than relying on a generic checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common transition failures

The new app says another VPN is active

Disconnect the old tunnel without uninstalling its app, then connect the replacement. If the operating system permits only one VPN profile, keep the old profile available but inactive. Re-enable its network lock only when you have confirmed how the two clients interact; two competing locks can leave you offline or create confusing recovery steps.

Websites work, but a DNS test shows unexpected resolvers

Inspect browser secure DNS first, then device private DNS and manual resolver entries. Remove stale profiles from the old client and check whether split tunneling excludes the browser. Reconnect after each change so you can identify which setting fixed the path.

IPv6 tests reveal your normal address

Stop sensitive activity and consult the replacement’s IPv6 instructions. Use its supported tunnel or disablement option rather than guessing at a system-wide change. Repeat both IPv4 and IPv6 checks after applying the fix.

The kill switch blocks local printers or corporate resources

Read the app’s LAN-access and split-tunnel controls. Add the smallest necessary local exception only if you understand that excluded traffic does not receive VPN protection. If the provider cannot support the required local service while maintaining your threat model, choose a configuration that meets both requirements instead of leaving the lock permanently disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tunnel drops during a Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoff

Keep the network lock enabled, wait for reconnection and verify that applications did not resume through the ordinary interface. If drops recur, test another supported protocol or consult the provider’s platform documentation; do not infer that a stable connection on one network will behave identically on another.

A practical decision framework for comparing replacements

Score each candidate against the same questions before you subscribe:

  • Data practices: Are collection, purpose and retention explained clearly, and is independent evidence dated and limited to a stated scope?
  • Outage behavior: Is a lock available on every device you use, is its default known, and does it stop all traffic or only selected traffic?
  • DNS and IPv6: Does the app control DNS, document custom and encrypted DNS interactions, and provide a clear IPv6 behavior?
  • Coverage: Are the required devices and protocols supported without routinely disabling protection settings?
  • Exit terms: Can you identify the renewal date, cancellation route, refund rules and separate deletion process before paying?

Prefer documented behavior that you can verify on your own device over a longer feature list. A dated independent measurement can expose differences that a policy or interface label does not, but an old study should not be presented as a current scorecard.

Transition checklist

  • Replacement policy, devices, protocols and independent evidence reviewed.
  • Old VPN still installed and available.
  • New account protected with unique credentials and available security controls.
  • New app installed on every intended device.
  • Kill switch or network lock enabled and its scope understood.
  • Old DNS profiles, browser secure DNS and private-DNS settings reconciled.
  • IPv6 behavior and split-tunnel rules checked.
  • Public IP, DNS path and IPv6 tested while connected.
  • Deliberate outage test confirmed that the lock blocks traffic.
  • Old renewal canceled, refund handled if applicable and deletion requested separately when wanted.
  • Old app and profile removed only after the replacement passed verification.
