To switch SteamVR to Valve’s beta channel, open Steam’s Library, right-click SteamVR, choose Properties, open the game-versions and betas section, and select Beta – SteamVR Beta Update. That changes the SteamVR application branch; it does not provide one universal firmware-update procedure for every headset. Firmware updating depends on the headset model, so use that device’s update prompt and official instructions. If a Vive update has already failed, Valve documents a Link Box-specific USB reset sequence.

What the SteamVR beta setting actually changes

The SteamVR beta is a software-branch choice inside the Steam desktop client. Valve describes the beta as a way to receive SteamVR features before they are released on the normal branch. Enrolling changes which SteamVR application files Steam uses; it does not change the firmware inside every headset connected to the computer.

That distinction matters because three different things can have separate software states: the Steam desktop client, the SteamVR application, and the headset’s own firmware. You can select the SteamVR beta while leaving the Steam client on its normal branch. A headset can also remain on its current firmware after SteamVR changes branches, because firmware updating is handled according to the headset maker’s model-specific process.

Valve’s official instructions for the SteamVR branch are in SteamVR Beta. The documented selection is exact, so use the SteamVR library entry rather than guessing from similarly named controls elsewhere in Steam.

How to switch SteamVR to the beta channel

  1. Open the Steam desktop client.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Find SteamVR in the library list. If the list is filtered, clear the filter or search for SteamVR so that its library entry is visible.
  4. Right-click SteamVR and select Properties.
  5. In the Properties window, open the section for game versions and betas.
  6. Select Beta – SteamVR Beta Update.

The label above is Valve’s documented choice. Selecting it tells Steam to use the SteamVR beta branch rather than the regular SteamVR branch. Steam may then download the branch’s current files. Allow that download to finish before starting a VR session, since launching while files are still changing can leave you unsure which branch is active.

What you need before changing the branch

You need the Steam desktop client and SteamVR listed in the same Steam Library. The procedure is a software setting; Valve’s instructions do not require buying a cable, accessory, replacement part, manual, tool, or new headset. Keep your existing headset setup available if you intend to test SteamVR immediately, but do not treat the beta selection as a hardware update command.

Confirm that you changed SteamVR, not another Steam setting

Return to Steam’s Library and open SteamVR’s Properties again if you need to check the selection. The relevant control is attached to the SteamVR library entry. The words Beta – SteamVR Beta Update should be the selected choice in the game-versions and betas area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use the general Steam Settings beta dropdown unless you deliberately want to test the Steam client itself. A common mistake is to change the client’s beta setting, restart Steam, and assume SteamVR has been enrolled. Those are separate controls and can be selected independently.

What the beta enrollment does not do

  • It does not establish a universal headset-firmware workflow.
  • It does not prove that a connected headset is on the latest firmware.
  • It does not replace the headset maker’s model-specific update instructions.
  • It does not automatically enroll the Steam desktop client in its own beta program.
  • It does not tell you whether a pending firmware update is safe to interrupt.

If you opted into the beta because a particular SteamVR feature is needed, verify that Steam has completed any branch download first. If your goal is a firmware update, identify the headset and use its own update prompt or support instructions separately.

SteamVR beta and Steam Client beta are separate

Valve documents a different path for testing the Steam client. In Steam, open Settings, choose Interface, find Client Beta Participation, select Steam Beta Update, and restart Steam when prompted. Those controls affect the Steam client, not the SteamVR application branch.

What you want to change Where to change it Documented selection Result
SteamVR application Library → right-click SteamVR → Properties → game versions and betas Beta – SteamVR Beta Update SteamVR uses the beta branch and can receive features before normal release.
Steam desktop client Steam Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation Steam Beta Update The Steam client enters its separate beta program and requests a restart.

If your goal is the SteamVR beta, change the SteamVR library property. Changing only Client Beta Participation is not the same operation. Conversely, selecting the SteamVR beta does not enroll the client in Steam’s own beta program.

The separate client procedure is documented in Steam Client Beta. Keep the distinction in mind when troubleshooting: a Steam client restart or client-branch change does not demonstrate that SteamVR’s branch changed, and a SteamVR branch change does not demonstrate that the client is running its beta.

Identify the headset before attempting a firmware update

There is no single firmware sequence that can safely be applied to every SteamVR-compatible headset. The title does not identify a model, and Valve’s SteamVR pages do not establish one universal set of menus, cables, reboot steps, or update tools. First determine the exact headset and connection hardware you are using.

Information to record

  • The headset manufacturer and model name.
  • Whether the setup uses a Link Box or another connection hub.
  • Which application or on-screen prompt reports the firmware update.
  • Whether the update is pending, currently running, or has already failed.
  • Any status message or error wording shown by the headset software.

Use the instructions supplied for that exact model when the headset’s own update prompt appears. The model determines which application presents the update, which components must remain connected, and what recovery steps are supported. Do not substitute the Vive recovery procedure below for another manufacturer’s headset, and do not assume that a headset listed as compatible with a streaming app shares the same firmware process.

A headset can be usable in SteamVR while still having a separate firmware notification. Conversely, a SteamVR beta problem can look like a device problem even when the headset firmware is unchanged. Keep the branch decision and firmware decision as two separate tasks in your notes.

How to handle a pending Vive firmware update safely

For a Vive setup with a pending firmware update, Valve’s support guidance is explicit: “You should always let pending firmware updates fully complete after being started. It is important to never unplug your Vive components or interrupt a firmware update in progress.” Keep the Vive components connected and wait for the update to finish once it has started.

This warning applies to an update that is in progress. Do not unplug the headset, Link Box, or other Vive components merely because the progress appears slow, the SteamVR window is busy, or you want to switch SteamVR branches. Interrupting an update can leave the device in a worse state and is not the same as the documented recovery procedure.

The recovery sequence in the next section is for a failed update, not a way to cancel an active one. First classify the state accurately: pending or running means leave the components connected; failed means consult the model-specific recovery instructions and confirm whether a Link Box is involved.

When the normal update has completed

Follow the headset’s own completion message or instructions. SteamVR beta enrollment and firmware completion are separate states, so selecting the beta does not by itself confirm that Vive firmware has been updated. If the headset software still reports a firmware task, continue with the exact Vive instructions rather than assuming the branch switch resolved it.

Recover a failed Vive firmware update when a Link Box is used

Valve’s documented recovery procedure is specific to a failed Vive headset firmware update in a Link Box setup. Use it only after the update has failed and only when the equipment matches that setup. The procedure is described in SteamVR Headset: Firmware update failed.

  1. Disconnect the Link Box from the PC. Unplug all Link Box cables from the computer. This is the first step of the failed-update recovery path, not permission to disconnect a device while an update is still running.
  2. Open SteamVR’s developer settings. In SteamVR, open Settings and choose Developer. Make sure Developer Settings is checked so the required USB-device command is visible.
  3. Remove SteamVR USB devices. Choose Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. Keep the Link Box’s USB cable unplugged, then confirm the removal.
  4. Wait for removal to finish. Do not reconnect the Link Box USB while SteamVR is removing the devices. Let that operation complete before moving to the next step.
  5. Quit SteamVR. Close SteamVR after the removal process completes.
  6. Reconnect the Link Box. Reconnect its USB, HDMI, and power cables.
  7. Relaunch SteamVR. Start SteamVR again and follow any new device or firmware prompt.

The order matters. The USB removal is performed with the Link Box USB still unplugged, and reconnection happens only after SteamVR has finished removing the devices and has been closed. Reconnect all three listed Link Box connections—USB, HDMI, and power—before relaunching.

This is a recovery path for a failed update, not a general reset for every headset. It is not a reason to unplug a Vive update that is still running, and it is not a procedure to apply automatically to a headset that does not use a Vive Link Box. If the update failed on another make or model, stop at the model-identification step and use that manufacturer’s support documentation.

If the headset is not ready after the update

Use the symptoms and the headset model to choose the next step. A beta-branch selection cannot resolve a loose connection or a graphics-driver problem, and a firmware prompt from one model does not define the behavior of another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with connection and software checks

  • Check the headset’s physical connections and the connection hardware used by the setup.
  • Check the installed graphics-driver version.
  • Restart the headset from the SteamVR status window when that option is available.
  • Restart SteamVR if the status window does not clear the device state.

These checks are specifically recommended in Valve’s Index Headset FAQ. The FAQ is Index-specific, so treat it as a documented example for Index troubleshooting rather than a universal menu path for every headset. If you are using an Index and those checks do not resolve the problem, Valve directs unresolved issues to Steam Support.

Separate a connection symptom from an update failure

If SteamVR cannot see the headset, first check the physical connections and graphics-driver state instead of repeatedly changing beta controls. If the headset software explicitly reports a failed firmware update, use the recovery instructions for that exact model. If the update is merely pending or running on Vive, leave the components connected and wait for completion.

Situation Appropriate action What not to assume
SteamVR is on the normal branch and you want pre-release SteamVR features Select Beta – SteamVR Beta Update in SteamVR’s Library Properties. Do not select the Steam Client beta unless you also intend to test the client.
A Vive firmware update is currently running Leave the Vive components connected and let it complete. Do not unplug components to force a restart.
A Vive firmware update has failed and the setup uses a Link Box Use Valve’s USB-device removal and Link Box reconnection sequence. Do not apply that recovery sequence automatically to another headset.
The headset remains unavailable after basic checks Use the exact model’s support instructions; for Index, Valve directs unresolved issues to Steam Support. Do not infer a firmware fault solely from SteamVR beta enrollment.

Steam Link compatibility is not a SteamVR firmware guide

Valve has a separate compatibility FAQ for the Steam Link streaming app on certain Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets: Steam Link For Meta, HTC and PICO Headsets. That page concerns streaming through Steam Link and lists software requirements for particular headset models.

Compatibility with Steam Link does not establish that a headset uses SteamVR’s beta branch, that SteamVR beta enrollment updates its firmware, or that the listed models share one update sequence. Steam Link streaming requirements and headset-firmware instructions belong to separate support paths. A model appearing on the Steam Link compatibility page is not evidence that its firmware can be updated from SteamVR’s Library Properties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the wrong beta control: Steam Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation changes the Steam client, while SteamVR’s beta is selected from the SteamVR library entry.
  • Expecting a firmware update from a branch change: SteamVR beta enrollment changes application files and does not confirm headset firmware status.
  • Interrupting a live Vive update: Valve specifically says not to unplug Vive components or interrupt a firmware update in progress.
  • Using failed-update recovery too early: The Link Box USB-removal sequence is for a failed update, not a pending or active update.
  • Applying Vive steps to another device: The documented recovery path is tied to a Vive Link Box setup.
  • Assuming streaming compatibility equals firmware compatibility: Steam Link requirements for Meta, HTC, and PICO models do not define SteamVR firmware procedures.
  • Skipping the model check: Record the manufacturer, model, connection hardware, and update state before selecting cables or menus.

A practical decision path

  1. Decide which beta you mean. For SteamVR itself, use the SteamVR entry in Library. For the Steam desktop client, use Steam Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation.
  2. Let the SteamVR branch download finish. If Steam begins downloading beta files, wait for that operation to complete before testing a VR session.
  3. Identify the headset. Record its exact model and whether a Link Box is present before following firmware instructions.
  4. Classify the update state. A pending or active update must be allowed to finish; a failed update may qualify for a model-specific recovery procedure.
  5. Follow the model’s official update prompt. Do not treat SteamVR beta enrollment as a firmware command.
  6. Use recovery only within its documented scope. The USB reset sequence applies to a failed Vive Link Box path.
  7. Run post-update checks. Check connections and graphics drivers, then restart the headset or SteamVR where the model’s support instructions provide those options.
  8. Escalate unresolved problems through the correct support path. For an Index, Valve’s FAQ points unresolved issues to Steam Support. For another model, use that manufacturer’s documentation rather than copying Index or Vive-specific steps.

Cost and equipment expectations

The official procedures described here do not call for a new headset, replacement cable, accessory, paid utility, or consumable. The SteamVR beta is selected in the existing Steam desktop client, and firmware work is performed through the headset’s established update process. Because the headset model is unspecified, recommending a model-specific cable or replacement part would be unreliable. Resolve the software branch and identify the hardware before considering any separate repair decision.

Key points to keep with your setup notes

  • The exact SteamVR beta selection is Beta – SteamVR Beta Update.
  • SteamVR beta and Steam Client beta are independent settings.
  • Firmware instructions depend on the headset model; there is no universal sequence established for all SteamVR headsets.
  • Never interrupt a pending Vive firmware update or unplug Vive components while it is running.
  • Valve’s USB-removal recovery instructions are for a failed Vive update using a Link Box.
  • Steam Link compatibility information does not prove anything about SteamVR firmware procedures.
  • No hardware purchase is part of the documented beta-selection or recovery steps.

What should I do while a Vive firmware update is running?

Let it fully complete. Valve says not to unplug Vive components or interrupt a firmware update in progress.

What if a Vive firmware update fails?

If the setup uses a Vive Link Box, Valve’s recovery path is to unplug all Link Box cables from the PC, enable Developer Settings in SteamVR, choose Remove all SteamVR USB Devices while the Link Box USB remains unplugged, wait for removal to finish, quit SteamVR, reconnect USB, HDMI, and power, and relaunch SteamVR. Use this only after a failed update.

Can I use the Vive Link Box recovery steps for another headset?

No. The documented sequence is specific to a failed Vive update in a Link Box setup. Another manufacturer or model requires its own support instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if the headset is still unavailable afterward?

Check physical connections and graphics-driver versions, then restart the headset from the SteamVR status window or restart SteamVR when those options are available. Valve lists these checks in its Index Headset FAQ; treat them as Index-specific guidance and use the correct model’s support path for other headsets.

Does Steam Link compatibility tell me how to update firmware?

No. Valve’s Steam Link compatibility page covers streaming-app requirements for certain Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets. It does not establish a SteamVR firmware procedure or prove that those models share one update method.

The Bottom Line

Select Beta – SteamVR Beta Update from SteamVR’s Library Properties; do not confuse it with Steam’s separate client beta. Treat headset firmware as a model-specific task. For Vive, never interrupt an active update. If a Vive Link Box update has failed, use Valve’s USB-device removal and cable-reconnection sequence only within that documented setup.
