To switch between webpages, open Safari’s tab controls and select the page you want. To switch between apps, swipe up from the bottom edge, pause in the center, then tap an app or window. These are different tasks, with different controls.
How do I switch Safari tabs on an iPad?
In Safari, open the tab view using the tabs control, then tap the webpage you want to view. The control’s appearance and placement can vary with Safari’s layout; with Compact Tab Bar enabled, the interface may look different from other layouts. Apple’s Safari guidance covers tab selection, closing a tab from the tab view, reopening a recently closed tab by touching and holding the New Tab button, and using tab groups.
How do I switch between open apps?
The standard touch method shows your open apps and windows so you can choose one:
- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen.
- Pause in the center of the screen, then lift your finger.
- Tap the app or window you want to open.

Can I switch apps with an external keyboard?
Yes. With an external keyboard connected, press Command-Tab to move to the next most recently used open app. Apple describes the shortcut as: “Command-Tab: Switch to the next most recently used app among your open apps.” It switches apps, not between Safari webpages. What changes when Stage Manager is on?
Stage Manager is an optional window-management mode. Its recent-app list can bring another app or app group forward, and you can also use the Dock. Apple also documents swiping up and pausing, swiping along the bottom edge, or using four- or five-finger swipes to switch. These methods bring apps or windows forward; select a Safari tab within Safari’s tab controls. See Apple’s Stage Manager guide.
