A mutual-fund switch is usually two linked transactions: units leave the source scheme through a redemption, and the proceeds buy units in the destination scheme. You may therefore incur an exit load and create a taxable capital gain or loss even when no money reaches your bank account. Before submitting the request, identify the lots being redeemed, read the source scheme’s current exit-load rules, apply the tax category and holding-period rules that fit those lots, and save the confirmations and calculations.
What a mutual-fund “switch” actually does
The word switch can describe several different changes, and the tax and load result depends on which one you are making:
| Transaction | What normally happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme A to Scheme B | Units in A are redeemed; the resulting amount is used to purchase units in B. | Source-scheme exit load, redemption NAV, destination purchase rules, and tax lots. |
| Regular plan to Direct plan | The old plan is generally switched out and the new plan is purchased, even if both belong to the same fund family. | Whether the plan change is treated as a redemption, any applicable load, and the date used for the new purchase. |
| Growth to an income or payout option | Processing depends on the scheme’s permitted options and transaction instructions. | Whether units are actually redeemed, whether a payout is involved, and the scheme’s current terms. |
| Statutory merger or consolidation | A fund house may combine schemes under a regulatory process rather than at an investor’s direction. | Whether a specific tax-law exception applies; do not assume an investor-requested switch receives the same treatment. |
An AMFI-hosted scheme document describes the operational rule this way: “Valid applications for ‘switch-out’ shall be treated as applications for redemption and valid applications for ‘switch-in’ shall be treated as applications for Purchase.” Treat that as the mechanism to investigate, not as a substitute for reading the current Statement of Additional Information (SAI), Scheme Information Document (SID), and your transaction confirmation.
Why the switch can create both load and tax
An exit load is a charge taken from the redemption value when the source scheme’s conditions say it applies. The destination investment is then made with the amount remaining after that charge. A capital gain or loss is determined by comparing the consideration for the redeemed units with their cost, using the applicable tax rules. Because the redemption is a transfer of units, it can be taxable in the financial year in which it occurs even though the proceeds are immediately reinvested.

The Income Tax Department’s general capital-gains guidance says gains from a transfer are normally taxable in the year of transfer, subject to specific exclusions, exemptions, or reinvestment provisions. A routine investor-initiated switch is not automatically one of the narrow statutory reorganizations listed as transactions that are not regarded as a transfer.
Before you press “Switch”: a practical sequence
1. Define exactly what you are changing
Write down the source scheme, plan, option, folio, destination scheme, and the requested date. Confirm whether you are moving between schemes, changing Regular and Direct plans, changing an option, or responding to a fund-house consolidation. Different forms can use similar language while producing different transaction records.
2. Download the current source documents
Use the latest SID, SAI, addenda, and official transaction page for the source scheme. Find the exit-load schedule and note:
- the rate or tiered rates;
- the holding period during which the load applies;
- whether the clock runs from allotment, each purchase, or another date;
- whether the charge is calculated on units, value, or another stated base;
- any free, exempt, or permitted amount; and
- special rules for switches, systematic plans, redemptions, or Regular-to-Direct changes.
Exit-load schedules can change. Never carry a rate from another scheme or an old account statement into a new request.
3. Determine which units will be debited
Mutual-fund purchases usually create separate lots. List every purchase, dividend reinvestment, switch-in, and other allotment that could still be held. The number of units you request to switch out may draw from multiple lots. For tax matching, the Income Tax Department’s mutual-fund reporting instructions use first in, first out (FIFO): the earliest available units are matched to the first debit, followed by later units.
4. Estimate the load and net proceeds
Use the applicable redemption NAV and the source scheme’s formula. AMFI explains the basic arithmetic as:

Redemption price per unit = applicable NAV × (1 − applicable exit-load rate).

For example, a ₹10 NAV with a 2% load produces a ₹9.80 redemption price per unit. That is an illustration, not a standard or recommended rate. Your confirmation should show the actual NAV, units, load, and net amount used for the switch-in.
5. Estimate each tax lot
For every matched lot, record the purchase date, units, acquisition cost, redemption date, and estimated consideration. Do not use one average purchase price if the tax result depends on different holding periods. Separate lots can be long-term and short-term at the same time.
6. Compare the cost with the reason for switching
Set the one-time tax and exit-load cost beside the reason for moving: asset allocation, risk, investment objective, ongoing expenses, service, or a change in your financial plan. A lower ongoing cost or better fit may justify a one-time charge, but a switch is not automatically beneficial merely because the destination fund has performed better recently.
How exit load is calculated
Exit load is scheme-specific. AMFI’s investor guidance describes the redemption price as the applicable NAV reduced by any applicable exit load. If the source scheme applies a 1% load to 200 units at a ₹150 NAV, the gross value is ₹30,000 and the load, if calculated on that value, would be ₹300, leaving ₹29,700 for reinvestment. The actual calculation must follow the scheme document; do not treat this illustration as a universal convention.
Questions to answer from the load schedule
- Does a switch-out count as a redemption for this scheme?
- Is the load based on the value redeemed, the number of units, or another defined measure?
- Are units beyond a free or exempt percentage charged differently?
- Do systematic-investment lots have separate allotment dates and load periods?
- Does a Regular-to-Direct change have a special schedule?
- Which NAV date and cut-off time apply to the request?
AMFI- and SEBI-standardized observations state that exit loads can apply to redemptions, including switch-outs, and direct investors to the prevailing scheme structure. The only reliable rate is the one in force for your source scheme and transaction date.

How to calculate the tax lot by lot
FIFO matching example
Suppose you bought 100 units on 1 January 2024 at ₹100 each and 50 units on 1 August 2024 at ₹120 each. You switch out 120 units on 1 October 2025 when the NAV is ₹150 and the applicable exit load is 1%.
| Lot | Units matched | Cost per unit | Cost matched | Gross value at ₹150 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2024 | 100 | ₹100 | ₹10,000 | ₹15,000 |
| 1 August 2024 | 20 | ₹120 | ₹2,400 | ₹3,000 |
| Total | 120 | — | ₹12,400 | ₹18,000 |
At a 1% load on the gross value, the illustrative load is ₹180 and the net redemption amount is ₹17,820. The illustrative gain before applying the correct tax classification is ₹5,420 (₹17,820 minus ₹12,400). The two lots have different holding periods, so you must classify them under the rules for the fund category and transfer date rather than applying one label to all 120 units.
What records support the estimate
- AMC or registrar transaction statements showing each allotment and cost;
- the switch request and confirmation;
- NAV and exit-load details for the redemption date;
- capital-gains or tax statements, if supplied; and
- your own FIFO worksheet showing how units were matched.
Use the Income Tax Department’s transaction summary and Annual Information Statement (AIS) as cross-checks. Its pre-fill instructions describe estimated consideration and acquisition figures and allow you to modify them before filing. A pre-filled number is an input to review, not a final computation that overrides your underlying statements.

Tax rates depend on the fund’s legal classification, holding period, transfer date, securities transaction tax (STT) conditions, and your taxpayer status. The following figures apply only to qualifying transfers of equity-oriented fund units under the stated provisions:
| Situation | Rate in the Income Tax Department guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term capital gain under section 111A, transfer before 23 July 2024 | 15% | Applies only when the statutory conditions, including the relevant STT condition, are met. |
| Short-term capital gain under section 111A, transfer on or after 23 July 2024 | 20% | Date-specific rate for qualifying transactions; verify all conditions. |
| Long-term capital gain under section 112A, transfer on or after 23 July 2024 | 12.5% on gains exceeding the aggregate ₹1,25,000 threshold | Applies only to qualifying section 112A gains and subject to the statutory conditions. |
These are not a universal “mutual-fund tax rate.” Debt, hybrid, international, and other categories can follow different provisions, holding-period definitions, indexation rules, or effective dates. Confirm the fund’s tax classification from its current documents and check the law applicable to your transfer year. Also account for any surcharge, cess, set-off, exemption, or loss rules that apply to your return.
Is exit load deducted before calculating STCG tax?
The safe practical approach is to use the actual net redemption consideration shown in the AMC or registrar confirmation and avoid subtracting the same exit load twice. AMFI’s arithmetic reduces the redemption price by the applicable load. Your capital-gains working should then use the transaction figures and cost basis required by the tax rules for your category and taxpayer status.

Do not assume that “no cash in the bank” means “no sale consideration.” The source units were redeemed, and the resulting amount bought destination units. Keep the load calculation and confirmation with your tax records. If the statement and the tax-information summary show different amounts, reconcile them before filing or obtain advice from a qualified Indian tax professional.

Section 47 of the Income Tax Act lists specific transactions that are not regarded as transfers, including certain qualifying mutual-fund consolidations. Those exceptions are narrow and depend on the exact statutory conditions and structure of the reorganization. An investor choosing to switch from one scheme or plan to another should not claim the exception merely because both schemes belong to the same fund house or because the destination investment is similar.
For an involuntary merger, retain the fund-house notice, old and new scheme details, allotment statement, and any tax communication. Confirm the treatment for that particular consolidation rather than borrowing the rules for an ordinary switch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Submitting the request and checking the result
- Confirm eligibility and cut-off: Check that both schemes accept the requested switch, that your folio and bank details are valid, and that you know the applicable transaction cut-off and NAV rules.
- Enter the source and destination carefully: Verify scheme name, plan, option, folio, units or amount, and whether the destination selection is Direct or Regular.
- Save the acknowledgement: Keep the request number, timestamp, channel, and any downloadable form.
- Review the confirmation: Check units redeemed, redemption NAV, exit load, net switch-out amount, destination NAV, and units purchased.
- Reconcile your holdings: Compare the new folio or statement with your expected destination units and note the purchase date of the new units.
- Update your tax worksheet: Record the redemption lots, gain or loss, and the new destination purchase separately.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every switch is tax-free
Correction: treat an ordinary switch-out as a possible taxable redemption unless a precise statutory exception applies.
Using a fund-house-wide exit-load rate
Correction: read the current source-scheme SID and addenda. Two schemes from the same fund house can have different schedules.
Applying equity-fund rates to a debt or hybrid fund
Correction: confirm the legal tax category and applicable holding-period rule before calculating.

Using the latest purchase price for every unit
Correction: match the debit under FIFO and calculate each lot’s holding period and cost.
Trusting AIS or pre-fill without checking
Correction: compare the estimated figures with AMC or registrar statements and amend the return data where necessary.
Ignoring the destination purchase date
Correction: record the new units as a separate purchase. The switch-out’s holding period does not simply carry over to the destination units unless a specific law provides otherwise.

Submitting before the load period ends
Correction: compare the expected load on the requested transaction date with the cost of waiting, including market exposure and your investment objective. Do not delay solely for a load saving if the transaction is needed for risk control without understanding that trade-off.
A decision checklist
- Have I named the exact source and destination schemes, plans, and options?
- Do I know which lots and units FIFO will match to the switch-out?
- Did I read the current source-scheme exit-load schedule?
- Did I calculate the net redemption amount using the applicable NAV and load?
- Did I confirm whether the fund is equity-oriented or another category for tax purposes?
- Did I apply the transfer date and the correct short-term or long-term rule?
- Did I check STT and other conditions before using section 111A or 112A rates?
- Did I compare the one-time tax and load with the reason for switching?
- Will I retain the request, confirmation, statements, and calculations?
When to obtain professional help
Consider advice from a qualified Indian tax professional when the switch involves many systematic-investment lots, inherited or gifted units, non-resident status, a business or trust taxpayer, large gains or losses, multiple fund categories, a merger, or conflicting statements. A professional can also help with loss set-off, surcharge, exemptions, and return disclosure that cannot be resolved from a switch confirmation alone.
Bottom line
Plan a switch as a redemption followed by a purchase. Identify the exact units being redeemed, verify the source scheme’s current exit load, calculate the gain or loss lot by lot under the correct fund-category rules, and preserve the evidence. Reinvestment changes where the proceeds go; it does not by itself erase the source transaction’s load or tax consequences.
