Switching KDE Plasma from X11 to Wayland is a logout-and-login choice in the SDDM display manager; it does not require reinstalling Plasma. Save your work, log out, choose Plasma (Wayland) from the session menu at the login screen, and sign in. Confirm the result with echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE; a successful switch prints wayland.
What changes when you switch?
X11 and Wayland are different display-session technologies. Plasma on Wayland uses KWin as the compositor and display server, while Plasma on X11 uses the X.Org-based session. Your desktop files, applications, and personal data remain in place; the change selects which session starts after authentication.
Most traditional graphical Linux applications continue to work in a Wayland session through Xwayland, an X11 server integrated with the Wayland compositor. Native Wayland applications and X11 applications can run side by side. The main compatibility concerns are specialized utilities that capture the screen, stream a desktop, emulate input, or depend on global keyboard shortcuts. Those tools may require a Wayland-native release, a portal-based configuration, or another compatibility setting.

Switch from X11 to Wayland at the SDDM login screen
- Save all work. Close or save documents and stop any long-running jobs that depend on the current graphical session.
- Log out of Plasma. Use the Plasma application launcher, the power/session controls, or your desktop’s logout command. A reboot is not normally required.
- Open the session chooser. At the SDDM login screen, look near the bottom-left corner. The control is commonly labeled with a session icon, Desktop Session, or a similar label, depending on the SDDM theme.
- Select Plasma (Wayland). Do this before entering your password if the chooser is shown on the login screen.
- Sign in. Enter your credentials. Plasma should start as a Wayland session.
- Verify the session. Open Konsole or another terminal and run:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPEThe expected output is wayland. If the command prints x11, log out and repeat the selection; the session may not have been applied or the distribution may have fallen back to X11.

If “Plasma (Wayland)” is missing
A missing entry usually means that the distribution has not installed or exposed the Plasma Wayland session. The session chooser cannot offer a session whose files are absent.
Install the distribution’s Wayland session package
Install the package supplied by your distribution, then log out or restart SDDM and check the chooser again. Ubuntu-family systems commonly provide the session in a package named plasma-workspace-wayland. Other distributions may use a different split-package name or include the files in their standard Plasma package.
Do not copy the Ubuntu-family package name to another distribution without checking that distribution’s package search, documentation, or release notes. Package names and repository availability vary by release.

After installation, either reboot or fully log out so SDDM rebuilds its available-session list. If you manage SDDM as a service, follow your distribution’s service-management procedure rather than guessing a command; the exact service name and permissions can differ.

Check for a distribution-level omission
Some distributions separate Plasma X11 and Wayland components, while others package both together. If the package is installed but the menu still lacks Wayland, check that the package matches your Plasma major version and that SDDM is the active display manager. A distribution update can also temporarily remove a session entry if a package was held back or partially upgraded.
When auto-login hides the session menu
Automatic login can start Plasma immediately, leaving no opportunity to choose a session. Log out so SDDM appears, then temporarily disable auto-login in the display-manager settings or the distribution’s system configuration. At the next login, select Plasma (Wayland) from the session chooser. After confirming that Wayland works, you can re-enable auto-login; verify that the chosen session remains the one you want before relying on automatic sign-in.
How to switch back to Plasma on X11
- Save your work and log out of the Wayland session.
- At SDDM, open the same session chooser, usually at the bottom-left.
- Select Plasma (X11).
- Sign in and, if needed, confirm the result with
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE; it should printx11.
This fallback exists only while your distribution still ships the Plasma X11 session components. Keep the X11 entry available while you check hardware, displays, accessibility tools, and production applications on Wayland. A future distribution upgrade can remove the entry even if it was present previously.
Wayland and X11 application compatibility
Applications that normally continue to work
Most established desktop applications do not need to be replaced. If an application has no native Wayland backend, Xwayland supplies the X11 environment it expects. Windows from native and Xwayland applications can appear together in the same Plasma desktop.

Applications that need special attention
Screen recorders, remote-desktop tools, streaming software, color-picking utilities, macro programs, and input-remapping tools may interact differently with Wayland’s security model. Wayland deliberately limits unrestricted global input and screen access; applications generally request access through compositor or desktop portals instead of reading every window or keystroke directly.
- Use a version that explicitly supports Wayland when the application offers one.
- For screen capture, select the PipeWire or desktop-portal capture method when the application provides it.
- For global shortcuts or input emulation, check whether the application documents a Wayland-specific backend or Plasma permission.
- If a critical tool still lacks the required support, log out and choose Plasma (X11) while you evaluate an alternative.
The fact that an application starts through Xwayland does not guarantee that every feature—particularly unrestricted capture, synthetic input, or global hooks—will behave as it did under X11.
NVIDIA requirements before choosing Wayland
KDE’s NVIDIA guidance identifies several conditions for the proprietary driver. Use a current Plasma release, an NVIDIA driver supported by KWin, the NVIDIA EGL Wayland library, and enabled nvidia_drm modesetting. The KDE guidance lists driver version 495.44 as the minimum supported by KWin and lists XWayland 24.1 or newer for avoiding flicker in XWayland applications.

In a terminal, run:
cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modesetThe expected output is Y. A different value indicates that modesetting is not enabled for the currently loaded driver. Driver package names, kernel parameters, and initramfs-update procedures are distribution-specific, so use your distribution’s NVIDIA documentation for the installation and boot-configuration steps.

Check the other NVIDIA prerequisites
- Plasma and KWin: Use a release new enough to include the Wayland fixes required by your hardware and driver.
- Driver: Confirm that the installed proprietary driver meets the KWin-supported baseline rather than assuming that any NVIDIA package is equivalent.
- EGL Wayland library: Ensure the distribution’s NVIDIA package set includes the EGL Wayland component.
- XWayland: Update to version 24.1 or newer if you see flicker in Xwayland applications and your distribution provides that version.
- Modesetting: Confirm the
nvidia_drmcheck returnsYafter rebooting into the configured kernel.
If Wayland fails to start, shows a black screen, or produces severe rendering problems, return to Plasma (X11) at SDDM, correct the driver configuration, and test again. Do not remove the working X11 session while troubleshooting.
Choosing between X11 and Wayland
The right session depends on the applications and hardware you use. Wayland is the strategic direction for Plasma, but X11 can remain the practical choice for a particular workflow until its dependencies catch up.

Accessibility and automation should be tested with the actual tools you depend on. A session that is technically faster or newer is not automatically better if it prevents a required screen reader, macro, remote-control, or capture workflow from functioning.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Wayland option never appears
- Install the distribution’s Wayland session package.
- Log out or restart SDDM after installation.
- Temporarily disable auto-login so the chooser is visible.
- Confirm that SDDM, not another display manager, is presenting the login screen.
- Check that the installed session package matches your Plasma release.
You selected Wayland but the terminal says x11
Log out and inspect the session choice again. If the menu selection was not retained, choose Plasma (Wayland) explicitly. If the session still falls back to X11, check distribution logs and graphics-driver documentation; a missing or incompatible compositor backend can prevent Wayland from starting.

The desktop starts but an application is unusable
Determine whether the application is an X11 client under Xwayland or a native Wayland client. Update it, enable its documented Wayland or PipeWire option, and test capture or input permissions. For a tool with no workable Wayland path, select Plasma (X11) at the next login rather than repeatedly restarting the application.
NVIDIA produces a black screen, artifacts, or flicker
Return to X11, verify the driver version and EGL Wayland library, check that cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset returns Y, and update XWayland to 24.1 or newer where available. Follow the distribution’s instructions for kernel parameters and initramfs regeneration; those commands are not universal.
Multiple monitors or high refresh rates behave differently
Test each monitor at its intended resolution and refresh rate, then test adaptive sync if you use it. Wayland supports the multi-monitor features KDE describes, but driver and hardware combinations can still differ. Keep an X11 fallback until the exact arrangement is stable.
Plasma’s X11 support timeline
The KDE Plasma Team stated in 2025 that “The Plasma X11 session will be supported by KDE into early 2027.” The same announcement says Plasma 6.8 is planned to be Wayland-exclusive, while X11 applications will continue to run through Xwayland. KDE’s known-issues planning note records an expected October 14, 2026 date for that transition. These are KDE’s plans; distributions can delay a release, alter package splits, or retain components temporarily. Check the session list on your own system before upgrading.
For that reason, testing Wayland now is useful even if you continue using X11 for a specific application. Identify any capture, accessibility, automation, remote-desktop, and NVIDIA issues while both session choices remain available.
