When fibre appears on your street, do not cancel your existing broadband first. Check availability at your exact address, compare the complete contract and price, then order from the provider you want to join. In most UK moves, the new provider coordinates the change through One Touch Switch. A move to a different physical network—especially a new full-fibre installation—can require an engineer visit and planned overlap between the old and new services.

Start with an address-level availability check

“Fibre available in your area” is not the same as “fibre can be ordered at your home.” Network coverage can stop at a cabinet, building entrance or property boundary, and an order checker may still need to confirm the exact address. Enter the complete address, including flat or unit details, on the provider’s availability page before you make any cancellation decision.

Record the network named in the result, the technology offered, the estimated download and upload speeds, the installation method and the earliest activation date. If the checker gives several products, treat each as a separate offer rather than assuming that every “fibre” package uses the same infrastructure.

Compare the whole offer, not just the headline download speed

What to compare Why it affects the switch What to record
Network and technology Full fibre, cable and part-fibre services can have different installation requirements, upload performance and fault paths. Network name, technology and whether it uses the same physical network as your current service.
Download and upload speeds Upload capacity matters for cloud backups, video calls, sending large files and cameras, while the advertised download figure may not describe every device’s Wi-Fi performance. Advertised download, advertised upload and any stated minimum or expected range.
Total monthly cost A low opening price can be offset by scheduled increases or one-off charges. Starting price, every stated price rise, installation fee and any equipment charge.
Minimum term and exit cost Leaving your current deal early can create a termination charge; the new deal also determines how long you are committed. Minimum term, end date, early-termination wording and any contribution to exit fees offered by the new provider.
Installation timing A different network may need a new cable route, an engineer appointment and access to the property. Confirmed date, arrival window, access requirements and what happens if the appointment is missed.
Router and Wi-Fi The new service is likely to include a different router, and its placement or capabilities can affect coverage around your home. Router supplied, return requirement for old equipment and any stated Wi-Fi features.
Support and compensation Support channels and compensation arrangements matter if activation or an appointment fails. Support contact method, service commitments and the provider’s process for reporting a fault.
Bundles and email Separating broadband from a landline or television bundle can change other services, and a provider email address may not remain available. Services included, cancellation effects and whether email retention is offered.

Ofcom recommends using accredited broadband price-comparison sites to find deals available at your address. Use a comparison result as a shortlist, then confirm the final price, term and installation details in the provider’s contract summary before ordering.

Check your current contract before placing the order

Find the minimum-term end date in your contract, online account or latest contract summary. Ask your current provider for the early-termination amount in writing if the minimum term has not ended. Ofcom says providers must give termination-charge information and key contract details, so keep the response with your switching records.

Understand what an early-termination charge means

Leaving during the minimum term may trigger an early-termination charge. Ofcom’s contract checklist says a residential or small-business contract should be no longer than 24 months, and, in the circumstances covered by its guidance, an early-termination charge should not exceed the payments remaining under the contract. The exact amount still depends on your contract and the date you leave; obtain the provider’s written calculation rather than estimating it from a monthly price.

A new provider may offer to contribute towards an exit fee. That is a commercial offer, not an automatic switching right. Check the offer in writing for its maximum amount, eligibility conditions, claim deadline, required proof and whether the payment is a credit, reimbursement or another form of support.

Check bundled services and provider email

If broadband is bundled with a landline or television service, ask what happens to each component when broadband ends. A change can cancel, reprice or alter the other services even when you only intended to replace internet access.

Provider-supplied email can also be affected. If you use an address issued by your current broadband company, create and test a replacement address before the switch if you need continuing access. Update important accounts, recovery addresses and contacts while the old mailbox still works, and ask the provider whether a retention option exists.

Order through One Touch Switch where it applies

For many UK broadband moves, the provider you want to join manages the switch. Ofcom’s consumer guidance, updated 25 August 2026, says: “Switching broadband is simple with One Touch Switch. Contact the provider you want to move to, and they will manage the switch for you.” The new provider normally asks for your address, current provider and the services you want to move; the old provider supplies important switching information.

More than two million customers used One Touch Switch from its September 2024 launch through the end of 2025, according to Ofcom (2025). Ofcom also reported that some switches were completed in one day. That figure describes use of the process across customers; it does not guarantee that your address, network or installation can be completed in one day.

Give the new provider accurate details

  1. Provide the exact service address, including a flat number, building name or unit identifier where applicable.
  2. Name your current broadband provider and identify every service you want to move, such as broadband, a landline or a television component.
  3. Check the order summary for the product, advertised download and upload speeds, total monthly price, price-rise wording, installation fee, minimum term and equipment policy.
  4. Read the proposed activation or engineer date and save the confirmation before you approve the order.
  5. Keep the current service running unless the new provider specifically confirms a different plan for your address and network.

The new-provider-led process is designed to avoid a separate cancellation call in a normal same-network switch. Do not assume that it covers every cross-network full-fibre move: where a different physical network is involved, Ofcom’s guidance says both providers may need to be contacted and the old service may need to be stopped as a new service starts.

Plan a cross-network or full-fibre installation

Switching to or from full fibre, or moving to a provider that uses a different physical network, is more like an installation project than a simple account transfer. The old connection may have to stop while a new line is built or activated. Confirm the sequence with both providers before accepting a final date.

Questions to settle before the engineer arrives

  • Is the new service delivered over the same physical network as the old one, or will a separate installation be required?
  • What date and time window has been confirmed, and what access must be available inside or outside the property?
  • Where will the optical network terminal (ONT), if required, and the new router be placed?
  • Does the installation require permission to enter a communal area, landlord approval or access to an existing entry point?
  • Should the old connection remain live until the new line has been tested, and who will arrange any old-service cease?
  • What happens if the engineer cannot complete the work or the promised date changes?

Choose a router and ONT location that can reach the rooms where you use the connection most. Avoid agreeing to a position that leaves the router behind thick walls, inside a cupboard or far from the devices that need a strong signal. If the provider’s installation design limits your choice, ask what alternatives are available before the appointment.

Keep an overlap when uninterrupted access matters

A short period with both services active can be useful when the providers permit it, particularly for home working, medical monitoring, security systems or other services that cannot easily tolerate downtime. Confirm any overlapping charges and the exact cease date in writing. Do not independently cancel the old service before the new installation is working unless the providers have instructed you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare your home network for the new router

The new service is likely to include a new broadband router. Your existing router may not support the provider’s authentication, fibre termination or management requirements, so treat the supplied equipment as the default starting point unless the provider confirms compatibility with your own device.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Reduce reconnection work

Before activation, make a list of devices that use the old Wi-Fi: phones, laptops, tablets, printers, smart speakers, cameras, televisions, streaming boxes and smart-home hubs. If the new router allows you to reuse the old Wi-Fi name and password, matching those settings may let many devices reconnect without manual setup. Check the router’s label or app for the exact network name and password, and change them if you prefer a fresh configuration.

Keep a temporary mobile-data option available if a working connection is important on installation day. A phone hotspot can provide short-term access for essential messages or work while the new line is being activated, but it is not a substitute for checking that the fixed service itself works.

Test with a wired connection first

When practical, connect one computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and test the service before judging Wi-Fi coverage. A wired test helps separate a line or activation problem from wireless placement, interference or a device-specific issue. Then test the rooms and devices that matter most over Wi-Fi, because a satisfactory wired result does not prove that every room has the same wireless performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this activation-day sequence

  1. Check the installation. Confirm that the ONT, if supplied, shows the expected status and that the router is connected to the correct port or fibre equipment.
  2. Wait for the stated activation window. A line can remain unavailable until the provider completes its scheduled activation, so avoid repeated resets before that window has passed.
  3. Connect one test device. Use a wired computer where possible, then open several ordinary websites and sign in to a service you use regularly.
  4. Run the provider’s recommended speed test. Record the time, connection method and result so support can distinguish a line issue from a Wi-Fi limitation.
  5. Reconnect priority devices. Join phones, work computers, printers and essential smart-home equipment to the new network.
  6. Check calling and bundled services. If a landline or television service was included, confirm that each component works before treating the move as complete.
  7. Keep the old equipment until billing and service are settled. Do not discard a router or ONT until the old provider confirms whether it must be returned.

Compare the result with the speed and service promised in your order, taking account of whether the promise refers to the connection to the router rather than performance on a particular Wi-Fi device. Report a material problem promptly and provide the records you made during testing.

Verify the old account, new billing and equipment return

In a normal switch, the old service should stop automatically once the new one works. Check the final bill from the old provider and the first bill from the new provider rather than assuming the account records updated correctly.

  • Confirm the old provider’s final service date and that charges stop from the correct point.
  • Check that any agreed early-termination contribution or credit appears as promised.
  • Compare the new bill with the order summary, including the monthly price, price-rise wording, installation fee and equipment charges.
  • Look for a return label, deadline and packaging instructions for the old router or other equipment.
  • Photograph returned equipment and keep the tracking or receipt evidence until the provider confirms receipt.
  • Challenge any continuing charge promptly, giving the provider the order confirmation and switchover date.

Keep the order confirmation, contract summary, termination-charge quote, engineer appointment, activation message, speed-test records and equipment-return evidence together. These dates and documents make it easier to correct a billing error or pursue compensation.

Know your cancellation and service-continuity rights

Fourteen-day cooling-off period

Ofcom says a new order can be cancelled within 14 calendar days. If service has already started, you may still owe proportionate charges for the service used and installation costs incurred. Cancelling the new order does not automatically restore the old service, so ask both providers what connection will remain available and on what date before you rely on that option.

Notice periods and loss of service

Ofcom says the old provider must not charge a notice period after the switchover date. Its guidance also says that loss of service should not last more than one working day. If the outage lasts longer or a confirmed appointment is missed, compensation may apply under the relevant scheme and circumstances. Report the problem as soon as it occurs and retain the appointment confirmation, outage dates and support reference.

These protections do not remove the need to check your contract or report a fault. They establish a basis for challenging an incorrect notice charge, prolonged interruption or missed confirmed appointment; the provider may still need details to assess the individual case.

Troubleshoot common switching failures

The new service is not live on the promised date

Check whether the stated date was an activation date or an engineer appointment, and whether the installation requires access that was unavailable. Contact the new provider with the order number and ask for a revised confirmed date and the reason for the delay. If your old service has already stopped, record the start of the outage and ask how the provider will handle any applicable compensation.

The old provider is still billing you

Compare the bill with the recorded switchover date. Send the old provider the confirmation showing when the new service began and request correction of charges after that date. If the provider says a separate cancellation was required, ask it to explain why the move was outside the normal process and provide the contractual basis for any charge.

Wi-Fi works in one room but not another

First verify the line with a wired test near the router. If the wired result is satisfactory, move the router to a more open, central position if the installation allows, reconnect the affected device and test again. A weak room signal is a wireless-coverage problem, not proof that the fibre line itself is delivering the wrong speed.

A device will not reconnect

Check that the device is joining the new network name, enter the password again and restart the device if it retains the old network details. For a smart-home product, use its setup app or temporary wired connection where supported. If you deliberately changed the Wi-Fi name or password, update every device that stored the previous credentials.

An email address or bundle has stopped working

Contact the old provider immediately to ask whether the mailbox or bundled service can be retained. Use the replacement email address you prepared for account recovery and important contacts. For a landline or television component, ask the new provider whether it was included in the order and ask the old provider which part of the bundle remains active.

The engineer missed the appointment

Save the confirmed appointment and any arrival messages, then report the missed visit through the new provider’s support channel. Ask for the earliest replacement date and how the provider will assess compensation. Avoid booking a second appointment through another channel until the original order record has been checked, because duplicate orders can create avoidable billing or cancellation confusion.

Choose between fibre offers without overvaluing the label

“Fibre” describes more than one setup. Full fibre generally means the fibre connection reaches the premises, while part-fibre services use fibre for part of the route and another connection for the final section; cable is a separate network technology. The label alone does not tell you which product is best for your household.

Decision Questions to ask Evidence to keep
Technology and network Is it full fibre, cable or part fibre? Does the provider use the same physical network as the current service? Address checker result and network name.
Performance What download and upload speeds are advertised, and which activities depend on upload capacity? Order summary and speed promise.
Cost What is the total recurring price after every stated rise, plus installation or equipment fees? Contract summary and promotional terms.
Commitment How long is the minimum term, and what would leaving early cost? Term end date and written termination quote.
Installation Is an engineer needed, what access is required and can the old service stay live during testing? Confirmed appointment and installation instructions.
Home equipment Which router and fibre equipment are supplied, where will they sit and what must be returned? Equipment policy and return instructions.
Support How do you report a failed activation, missed appointment or prolonged outage? Support details and case references.
Other services Will a landline, television package or provider email change? Bundle terms and email-retention answer.

Do not rank providers generally from a neighbourhood advert. Coverage, price, installation timing and contract wording must be checked for the exact address and date of your order.

A practical switching checklist

Before ordering

  • Run an address-level check and identify the actual network and technology.
  • Compare download, upload, complete price, rises, installation fee, minimum term, router and support.
  • Find the current contract end date and request a written early-termination amount.
  • Check landline, television and provider-email consequences.
  • Prepare a replacement email address and update important account recovery details if necessary.

When ordering

  • Give the new provider the exact address, current provider and services to be switched.
  • Read and save the contract summary, activation date and equipment policy.
  • For a cross-network move, confirm engineer access, ONT/router placement and whether overlap is recommended.
  • Save any written offer to contribute to exit fees and its conditions.

On activation day

  • Keep mobile-data fallback available if downtime would cause a problem.
  • Test the new service with one wired device, then check essential Wi-Fi devices.
  • Record the test result, activation time and any fault reference.
  • Keep old equipment until return requirements are clear.

After the switch

  • Check the old final bill and the new first bill against the order.
  • Return equipment with photographs and tracking evidence.
  • Challenge post-switchover charges, outages longer than one working day or missed confirmed appointments promptly.
  • Keep all confirmations until the accounts and services are settled.

What a successful switch looks like

You have a written address-specific order, a confirmed activation or installation date, a tested connection on the new router and a record of the old account’s final date. Household devices reconnect, bundled services and email have been dealt with deliberately, and the first bills match the prices and credits promised. If anything differs, the documents and timestamps you saved provide the clearest route to correction.
