To switch function keys, first identify your keyboard and operating system: the toggle may be built into the keyboard, or it may be an operating-system setting. On a Mac, change the Function Keys setting; on a Chromebook, enable the top-row function-key option. On Windows, there is no universal setting or shortcut—use the method documented for your specific keyboard or computer.
Choose the method that matches your keyboard
Many keyboards give the top row two behaviors: standard F1–F12 commands and alternate actions such as adjusting volume or brightness. The key legends can help identify which behavior is assigned to each key. Whether you use a built-in laptop keyboard or a separate keyboard also matters, because the mode may be controlled by hardware or by the operating system.

Hold Fn for one standard function-key press
If a key’s primary action is a system feature such as brightness or volume, hold Fn while pressing it to request the standard F-key action. This is useful when you only need an F-key command once. The exact behavior depends on the keyboard.

Use F Lock if the keyboard has it
On keyboards equipped with F Lock, pressing that key switches between the standard function-key commands and the alternate commands. Look for an indicator light or a changed key behavior to tell which mode is active. Do not assume every keyboard has F Lock or uses the same indicator.
Set standard function keys on a Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Choose Function Keys.
- Select Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.
With this option enabled, the top-row keys use their standard function-key actions by default. To use the Mac feature printed on a key, hold Fn or Globe while pressing it. On earlier macOS versions, the setting is in Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard. Apple notes that the Function Keys option may not be available for a non-Apple keyboard; check that keyboard’s documentation if you do not see it. Apple’s instructions for using function keys on Mac cover the setting and the Fn/Globe behavior.

Make the Chromebook top row act as function keys
- Open Settings.
- Go to Device > Keyboard and inputs.
- Turn on the option to treat the top-row keys as function keys.
For a one-time standard function-key press, hold Search or Launcher while pressing the corresponding top-row key. Google also documents customizing F11 and F12 for supported Chromebook keyboards. Windows does not provide one function-key toggle that applies to every keyboard. Some computers use a BIOS/UEFI option, a manufacturer utility, or a keyboard shortcut; others rely on Fn for each press. For Lenovo devices covered by its support guidance, Fn+Esc switches function-key mode. That shortcut is not a general Windows command, so confirm it applies to your model before using it. If you use a separate keyboard, check its own manual rather than assuming the laptop’s setting will control it. Microsoft describes Fn and F Lock options for its accessories, while other manufacturers may provide different controls. Start with the support page for the exact keyboard or computer model.

Troubleshoot when the keys still behave the wrong way
- Confirm which keyboard is active. A built-in laptop keyboard and an external keyboard may use different modes.
- Check the key legends and indicators. Look for Fn Lock, F Lock, or an indicator that shows the current mode.
- Test the temporary Fn combination. If it works but the default remains unchanged, you may need a mode toggle or system setting instead.
- Verify the setting for your OS version. Mac menu labels and available options vary by version and keyboard; Chromebook controls may vary by device.
- Look up the precise model. Search the manufacturer’s support material for the computer or keyboard model and its function-key mode. Do not assume another brand’s shortcut will work.
