You can move Chrome bookmarks to an Android privacy-focused browser safely by creating a portable HTML backup first, importing that file into a browser that supports it, and checking the result before removing Chrome. The documented paths differ: Brave can import a bookmarks HTML file directly on Android; Firefox for Android has an HTML-import feature that is still rolling out, plus a desktop-import-and-sync route; DuckDuckGo does not have a verified Chrome-bookmark import procedure in the documentation covered here.
This migration moves bookmarks, not automatically your passwords, history, tabs, payment details or autofill. Keep Chrome and the exported file until every important folder and link has been verified.
What you need before starting
- A computer with Chrome if you need to create the documented Chrome export. Google’s instructions specify Chrome on a computer, not Chrome for Android.
- Access to the Google account or computer profile that currently contains the bookmarks.
- Enough storage for one HTML file and a way to move it to your Android phone, such as USB, cloud storage or a file-transfer app.
- The destination browser installed from its official Android app listing.
- A separate plan for other browser data. An HTML bookmark file does not contain Chrome passwords, history, open tabs or autofill.
Leave Chrome installed while you work. The exported HTML file is your recovery copy if an import is incomplete or a folder is misplaced.

Choose the destination by how you want to migrate
There is no single privacy winner established by these instructions. Choose according to import availability, sync needs and the privacy controls you actually want to use.

These are different capabilities rather than a privacy score. A browser with a convenient file import may still require separate work for passwords and synchronized tabs.
Step 1: Export Chrome bookmarks to an HTML file
Google describes the result plainly: “Chrome exports your bookmarks as an HTML file.” Follow the computer procedure documented in Chrome Help.
- Open Chrome on your computer using the profile that contains the bookmarks.
- Open the Bookmark Manager. You can reach it from Chrome’s bookmarks menu or by opening the manager from Chrome settings.
- In Bookmark Manager, open the More menu.
- Choose Export Bookmarks.
- Save the generated HTML file somewhere you can identify, such as a dedicated “Chrome bookmarks backup” folder. Do not edit the file.
The documented export route is for Chrome on a computer. If the bookmarks are visible only in Chrome on your phone, first make sure they are available in Chrome on a computer or locate an existing Chrome HTML export; do not assume the Android app can produce the same file.

Move the file to Android
Copy the HTML file to your phone with a USB cable, cloud-storage download or another file-transfer method you trust. Keep the original copy on the computer. If Android asks which app should open the file, do not open it as a web page and save it again; use the browser’s import command so the folder structure can be read.
Step 2: Import directly in Brave for Android
Brave documents both import and export of bookmark HTML files on Android, including files exported by other browsers. Its procedure is described in Brave’s Android help article.

- Open Brave on Android.
- Open the Main menu.
- Tap Bookmarks.
- Open the bookmarks overflow menu.
- Tap Import bookmarks.
- Select the Chrome HTML file in Android’s file picker and approve access if Android asks.
- Wait for the import to finish, then open the bookmark folders and links described in the verification section below.
Brave also exposes Export Bookmarks in the same Bookmarks overflow menu. That gives you a second HTML copy after migration, but it does not replace the original Chrome export until you have checked the new file.
If Brave cannot see the file
- Confirm that the file still has an
.htmlextension and was not renamed by a messaging or cloud-storage app. - Save a local copy in the Android Downloads folder and reopen the file picker.
- Check that you are in Brave’s bookmarks screen, not the Android share sheet or a normal browser tab.
- If the import creates duplicate folders after a retry, stop and inspect the first import before trying again; repeated imports can make verification harder.
Step 3: Import in Firefox for Android when the feature is available
Mozilla’s documented Android feature is accessed from the bookmarks screen, but Mozilla labels HTML import experimental and says it is progressively rolling out. Availability can depend on the installed version and whether remote improvements are enabled. The official instructions are at Import bookmarks to Firefox for Android.

- Open Bookmarks.
- Tap the overflow menu.
- Look for Import from file. If it appears, select it.
- Choose the Chrome HTML file from Android’s file picker.
- Keep Firefox open while the import runs. Mozilla says the time depends on the amount of data, so do not close the app or promise a fixed completion time.
- Inspect the imported folders and several high-value links before deleting the backup.
Mozilla explicitly cautions: “Firefox for Android can’t import bookmarks or other browsing data directly from another browser installed on your Android device.” In practical terms, Firefox is reading the HTML file you provide, not reaching into Chrome’s Android storage.
If “Import from file” is missing
Use the established desktop route instead of assuming the feature is broken:
- Install or open Firefox on a computer.
- Import the Chrome HTML file into Firefox on that computer using Firefox’s bookmark-import tools.
- Sign in to the same Mozilla account in Firefox for Android.
- Enable Firefox Sync and include bookmarks in the data selected for synchronization.
- Leave the Android app connected long enough for the bookmarks to appear, then verify them locally.
Firefox’s Sync documentation explains the broader categories it can synchronize at Backup, recovery, and sync: Sync data. This route uses a computer for the import, but it can also carry supported data categories beyond bookmarks when you explicitly select them.

What about DuckDuckGo for Android?
DuckDuckGo’s Android browser includes tracker blocking and increased encryption as built-in features, but the documentation covered here does not establish a Chrome-to-DuckDuckGo bookmark-import workflow. Treat it as a destination only if you can confirm an import method in the current app yourself; do not assume that selecting an HTML file in Android will work.
Plan for local storage if you use it. DuckDuckGo explains in “Where did my bookmarks or passwords go?” that uninstalling the Android app deletes locally stored bookmarks and passwords unless Sync and Backup is used. Enable that protection before relying on the browser as your only copy.
Step 4: Verify bookmarks before retiring Chrome
An import that completes without an error can still have missing folders, duplicate entries or links stored in an unexpected location. Use a deliberate sample rather than checking only the first few items.
- Check the folder tree. Compare the top-level folders in Chrome with those in the new browser, including folders nested several levels deep.
- Check representative links. Open a few bookmarks from each important folder, including one older link and one recently added link.
- Check special locations. Look for bookmarks saved on the bookmarks bar, mobile bookmarks and any “Other bookmarks” area represented by the export.
- Search for high-value items. Confirm work systems, financial institutions, recovery pages, travel records and other links you cannot easily recreate.
- Check duplicates after retries. If you imported more than once, remove only verified duplicates; retain the original HTML file until the cleanup is complete.
- Make a destination backup. Once the new browser is correct, use its own export function where available and store that second HTML file separately.
Do not uninstall Chrome or delete the first HTML file until these checks pass. A portable backup is useful even after migration because it is independent of a particular browser account.
Bookmarks are only one part of browser migration
HTML import is a bookmark operation. It does not silently transfer Chrome passwords, browsing history, open tabs, payment methods or autofill data. Make a separate inventory before signing out of Chrome.

Passwords
Review saved passwords in the new browser’s password manager or use its documented import process if one is offered. Firefox’s Android HTML-import documentation covers bookmarks; it does not say that passwords are included in that file. Brave documents password export as CSV on Android, but a CSV is sensitive, unencrypted text and should be handled only through a documented destination workflow and deleted securely afterward.
History and open tabs
Bookmarking an open tab does not recreate browsing history or session state. Save pages you still need as bookmarks, then check whether the destination’s account-based sync supports history or open tabs. Firefox Sync lists supported categories and selection controls in its official documentation.
Autofill and payment information
Exporting bookmarks does not move addresses, card details or form-fill data. Record what you need, then migrate it only through the destination browser’s documented secure settings. Avoid placing payment data in a plain-text notes file.
Android default-browser setting
Set the new browser as Android’s default only after verification. The exact menu labels vary by Android version and device manufacturer, and the available documentation here does not establish one current path for every phone. Use your phone’s Settings search for Default apps or Browser app, select the verified destination, and test a link from another app. This setting is separate from installing the browser or opening a one-time link in it.

Switching browsers can improve your control over tracking, but no browser setting guarantees complete privacy. Read the destination’s current settings and privacy policy, and decide which sync conveniences are worth the data exposure and recovery risk.

Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox says Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled by default on Android. Its Standard level blocks social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies and cryptominers. Strict blocks additional tracking content, but Mozilla warns that stronger blocking can interfere with some site functionality. The levels and their behavior are documented at Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox for Android.
If a site’s login, video player or checkout stops working, use the site-protection control to diagnose the problem before abandoning the browser. Lowering protection for one site is a targeted compatibility decision, not proof that the browser has stopped protecting every other site.
Brave Sync
Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy says Sync data is encrypted and that the decryption key stays on users’ devices. That design means the service cannot simply restore your data without the key, but it also means a lost device or lost key can make synced data unrecoverable. Store recovery information exactly as Brave instructs before depending on Sync across phones and computers.
Local storage versus account sync
Sync can make bookmarks and other supported data available on several devices, while local-only storage keeps the data on one device but increases the risk of loss if that device is reset or the app is removed. Choose deliberately, and keep an independent HTML export even when sync is enabled.
Common problems and the safest fix

Migration checklist
- Chrome remains installed and the correct profile is open.
- A computer-generated Chrome HTML export is saved in two locations.
- The file has been transferred to Android without being edited.
- The destination’s documented import route has been used.
- Important folders, recent links and high-value accounts have been checked.
- Passwords, history, tabs, payment details and autofill have separate migration plans.
- Sync is enabled only after reviewing what it stores and how recovery works.
- The Android default-browser setting is changed only after verification.
- The original HTML backup is retained for future recovery.
The Bottom Line
For the most predictable phone-only import, use Brave with a Chrome HTML export. For Firefox, try the Android file-import feature if it is present; otherwise import on Firefox desktop and sync to Android. In every case, verify bookmarks first and treat passwords, history, tabs and autofill as separate migrations.
