You can move saved logins to a password manager without giving up autofill. Set up the manager on the devices you use, transfer your saved credentials, and test important sign-ins before turning off the browser’s password-saving prompts or deleting its stored copies. If you export a CSV, delete it after you finish: Google warns that anyone who can use the device may be able to open that file.
What changes when you switch—and what does not
A browser can do two related jobs: save credentials and offer them when you sign in. A password manager can take over those jobs through its browser extension, mobile app, or operating-system autofill integration, depending on the manager and device. Turning off the browser’s offer to save passwords is not the same as moving your existing passwords. The transfer and the settings change are separate steps.
That distinction is central to avoiding lost logins. If you disable saving before importing your credentials, the browser may stop offering to save new ones while your existing passwords remain only in the browser. If you delete browser-stored entries before confirming the import, you may lose the easiest copy to recover. Do the handoff first, test it, and clean up afterward.

You may want the new manager to fill credentials while preventing the browser from asking to save another copy. The goal is not necessarily to turn off every form of autofill; it is to make one chosen manager the dependable place where credentials are stored and offered.

Choose the destination before exporting
There is no universally best manager established by the browser-transfer instructions. Choose one that supports the operating systems, browsers, and phones or tablets you actually use, then check how it handles imported files and autofill in those environments. A successful import on a computer does not, by itself, establish that the manager is ready to fill logins in a mobile app.
- Coverage: Confirm that the manager has a supported way to fill logins in each browser and on each device where you sign in.
- Import support: Check whether it accepts an export from your current browser and whether it identifies duplicates or entries it cannot import.
- App sign-in: If you sign in through mobile apps, confirm how the manager offers credentials there as well as on websites.
- Account recovery: Before moving your only copy of important credentials, understand how you can regain access to the manager account if you lose a device or forget its login.
- Additional features: If you rely on passkeys or other authentication features, check the destination manager’s support separately. Password import support alone does not establish support for every credential type.
Install and sign in to the manager on the devices you plan to use before starting the transfer. This gives you somewhere to import the credentials and a chance to check how its autofill behaves while the browser’s original entries are still available.
Inventory and protect the credentials you are moving
Start by checking which browser profile and account contain the logins you use. On a shared computer or one with multiple browser profiles, it is easy to export from the wrong profile and mistake an incomplete transfer for a successful one. Check whether the source contains important accounts, more than one username for a site, and logins you use from apps rather than a browser.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDecide which logins need to be confirmed first. Prioritize your email account, financial accounts, work or school accounts, and any account you depend on to regain access to others. This is a practical testing order, not a claim that a browser export labels accounts by importance.
An exported password CSV is not a protected vault. Treat it as readable text containing sensitive credentials: do not leave it in a downloads folder, attach it to a message, or keep it as a convenient backup. Google specifically warns that anyone using the device may be able to open an undeleted export. Keep the file only long enough to complete the import and checks, then delete it.

Move passwords from Chrome
Google Password Manager supports password export and import in Chrome. Google’s CSV import instructions expect a .csv file whose first line uses the column names url, username, and password. If your destination manager asks for a particular import format, follow its current instructions; an export that one product accepts may not map perfectly into another product’s fields.
- Open Chrome’s password controls. Use Chrome’s password-management settings to review saved credentials and find the export or import controls. Menu labels and locations can change, so rely on the current wording shown by your installed version rather than an old screenshot.
- Export only when you are ready to import. Save the CSV in a place you can find for the import, but avoid leaving it there after the move. Because it contains readable credentials, limit who can access the device while the file exists.
- Import into the destination manager. Use that manager’s import function and select the Chrome export. If it requires a different column layout, use its documented conversion or formatting process rather than renaming fields by guesswork.
- Inspect the result. Search for a few known accounts, including one with multiple usernames if applicable. Google notes that some app or site names may appear in unexpected fields after a CSV import, so search for an entry by more than just the label you expect.
- Test autofill before changing Chrome settings. Open a sign-in page for a high-priority account and confirm that the new manager offers the right username and password. Do not submit a form unless you are sure it is the genuine sign-in page.
Google lists a limit of 3,000 passwords per import and up to 10,000 passwords in a Google Account. These are product limits, not a measure of how many passwords a person should keep. If your account is near those limits or an import reports a problem, inspect the product’s current import guidance and error message instead of assuming that all entries transferred.
Move passwords from Firefox or import Chrome logins into Firefox
Mozilla documents CSV export from Firefox and CSV import from another app or file. If Firefox is the destination and Chrome is the source, the migration method depends on Firefox version and operating system: starting with Firefox 140, Mozilla says Chrome passwords cannot be imported automatically on Windows or Linux. In that situation, use a CSV file through Firefox’s migration wizard.
- Check your Firefox version and computer platform. The Firefox 140 change applies to Chrome-password migration on Windows and Linux. Do not assume that an automatic migration option described for a different version or platform will appear on your system.
- Choose the supported transfer route. For Chrome passwords on Windows or Linux with Firefox 140 or later, export a CSV from Chrome and use Firefox’s migration wizard to import it. For other source and destination combinations, check the current Firefox migration options and onscreen prompts.
- Review imported logins. Search for several known entries and test autofill in Firefox before removing Chrome’s copies. If you use Firefox as the source instead, its documented CSV export can be used to transfer logins to a compatible destination manager.
Mozilla’s instructions distinguish Firefox’s password storage from Google’s. A transfer to Firefox does not mean that Chrome’s stored entries have been erased; treat source cleanup as a separate decision after testing the destination.
Verify the handoff before disabling or deleting anything
An import completing without an error is not enough to establish that every useful login is present and usable. Google notes that some imported app or site names can land in unexpected fields, and Firefox’s Chrome migration route has a version and platform caveat. Verify a representative set while the original browser copy is still available.

- Find each critical account in the manager. Search by the site or app name, and check the username as well as the password entry.
- Check multiple logins for the same site. If you have personal and work accounts, confirm that the manager offers the intended username rather than the first matching entry.
- Test more than one sign-in flow. Check a normal website login and, if relevant to your routine, a login in a mobile app or another browser.
- Confirm the manager is the source of the offer. Make sure you can identify its autofill prompt or extension control so you know which store is providing the credential.
- Investigate missing or misplaced entries. Search by URL, username, or a variation of the app name. If an entry is genuinely absent, retry the import or add it to the manager before deleting the browser copy.
Verification is a risk-reduction step, not a guarantee that every possible login flow will work. Keep the source entries until the accounts you rely on have been checked in the places you sign in.
Stop the browser from saving competing copies
After the destination manager can fill your tested accounts, turn off the old browser’s password-saving prompt if you want one store to remain authoritative. This helps avoid a split in which newer passwords are saved in the browser while older ones live in the manager. The precise wording may shift with browser updates.
Chrome
In Chrome’s password settings, turn off Offer to save passwords and passkeys to stop Chrome from offering to save them. This is a save-prompt control; it is not the same as exporting credentials or confirming that a manager’s autofill works. Keep the destination manager’s extension or supported autofill feature enabled for the browsers and devices where you need it.
Firefox
Firefox lets you remove the check from Ask to save passwords to stop its global save prompts. Mozilla also documents an option to exclude individual websites, which can be useful if you want to retain Firefox’s prompt on some sites while suppressing it on others. Make the choice that matches your intended setup rather than disabling a feature you still rely on.
Other browsers, including Edge
For Edge and other browsers, use the browser’s current password settings to locate its save prompts and autofill controls. A password manager’s browser-disabling guide covers controls for Chrome and Chromium browsers, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, but the exact menu labels can change. Turn off the browser feature that competes with your chosen manager; do not infer that the manager’s settings are identical across browsers.

Edge’s Custom Primary Password change is a separate browser-security matter. Microsoft says that users who opted in to that feature moved to device-based authentication after June 4, 2026. That change concerns protection for passwords stored in Edge; it does not describe how third-party managers import credentials. Do not treat it as an import requirement or as evidence that your manager transfer is complete.
Clean up safely and keep a recovery route
Once the destination manager has the credentials you need and autofill works where you use it, remove the temporary CSV. Then decide whether to delete the old browser copies. Removing those copies can reduce duplication, but do it only after you have verified the new manager and know how you will recover access to it.
- Delete the export file. Remove the CSV after import and verification, including any extra copy you made during troubleshooting. Empty the device’s trash or recycle bin if that is necessary for it to stop being readily available there.
- Remove source entries only after the checks pass. Use the browser’s password controls to delete old stored copies when you are confident that the destination has the accounts you need. If you are not ready to remove them, at least keep browser saving turned off so new credentials are not silently split between stores.
- Secure access to the new manager. Keep a recovery plan separate from the browser export. Make sure you understand the manager’s account-recovery process and can access any recovery information you set up.
- Recheck after changing devices or browsers. Install or enable the manager’s supported autofill method on each new device. Do not assume that signing in on one device automatically configures every browser or mobile app.
Do not keep the CSV on a USB drive as a long-term backup. Moving a readable password file to removable storage does not turn it into a protected vault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to do
The import says it worked, but a login is missing
Search using the URL and username as well as the site name. Imported app or site names may appear in unexpected fields, and duplicate accounts can make an entry look missing when it is filed under a different label. If you still cannot find it, retain the browser copy and import or add the login again before cleanup.
The manager does not offer autofill
Check that the manager is installed, signed in, and enabled in the browser or device where you are testing. Then confirm that autofill is available for that particular browser or app. An imported credential can exist in the vault even when the manager’s filling feature is not set up in that environment.

The browser keeps asking to save a password
Reopen that browser’s password settings and check its save-prompt control. The manager’s extension and the browser’s own save prompt are separate settings, so enabling one does not necessarily disable the other. Firefox also supports excluding individual sites from its save prompts if that is preferable to changing the global setting.
Firefox does not offer automatic Chrome password import
If you are using Windows or Linux with Firefox 140 or later, Mozilla’s documented route for Chrome passwords is CSV import through the migration wizard. Check the current wizard prompts and use the exported file rather than searching for an automatic option that is not available for that combination.
The CSV format is rejected
Check that the file is a CSV and that the destination supports the format you are supplying. Google’s import guidance specifies the first-line fields url, username, and password for its CSV workflow; other managers may ask for a different format. Follow the destination’s current instructions, and do not edit a credential file in a way that exposes or changes passwords accidentally.

Keep the workflow simple
- Set up the destination manager on the devices and browsers you actually use.
- Export or migrate credentials using the current browser and manager instructions.
- Import, inspect, and test important accounts before changing the source browser.
- Turn off competing save prompts after the manager works.
- Delete the temporary readable export and remove old browser copies only when you are ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off browser password saving without immediately deleting passwords already stored there?
Saving controls and stored credentials are separate. Turning off a save prompt prevents the browser from offering to save new credentials; it does not perform an export or erase the existing entries.
Does importing passwords also move passkeys?
Not necessarily. Chrome’s import and export tools cover passwords and passkeys, but support depends on the destination and transfer route. Check the destination manager’s current documentation for passkey handling rather than assuming a password CSV carries them over.
