You can move from Android Auto to Apple CarPlay without losing your personal phone data, but Android Auto preferences do not automatically become CarPlay settings. Treat the change as two separate jobs: migrate your data from Android to the iPhone, then configure CarPlay on the vehicle.
First confirm that your specific car or aftermarket stereo supports Apple CarPlay and whether it supports wired, wireless, or both connection types. Then use Apple’s Move to iOS process for supported phone content and set up CarPlay from scratch. Your vehicle’s make, model, year, and infotainment system determine the exact menu labels and whether an old Android pairing remains stored.
What actually changes when you switch
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are separate projection systems. Android Auto settings are not an account package that can be imported into CarPlay, and Apple’s published Android-to-iPhone migration list does not include Android Auto settings. Expect to configure CarPlay independently even when your contacts, photos, messages, and other personal data arrive on the iPhone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That does not mean every setting on the car will be erased. Whether the vehicle keeps a paired Android phone, allows multiple phones, or automatically prioritizes one device depends on the vehicle’s infotainment software. The available evidence does not establish one universal behavior, so use the vehicle manual for those details.

Apple Support summarizes the connection choices this way: “Set up CarPlay by connecting your iPhone and your vehicle using your vehicle’s USB port or its wireless capability.” The current Apple guide is written for iOS 26, although menu wording can change in later releases.
Separate phone migration from car setup
Do not begin by deleting the Android phone’s apps or removing its vehicle pairing. Keep the Android phone available until you have confirmed that the information you need is on the iPhone and that CarPlay works.
Job 1: move your personal data
Use Apple’s Move to iOS flow if the iPhone has not yet completed initial setup. Apple says the automated transfer can include a defined set of content and settings, but it is not a complete image of the Android phone. If the iPhone is already set up, Apple’s instructions say to erase it and start over for that automated flow, or move content manually instead. Erasing is a major step: make an iPhone backup first if the phone contains anything you need to keep.

Move Android content to the iPhone without losing it
Apple’s current Move to iOS guidance identifies the following transfer categories. Availability can depend on the Android version, the iPhone setup state, storage, and whether the relevant service or app supports the transfer.
| Content or setting | What Apple lists | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Supported transfer category | After setup, open Contacts on the iPhone and check several records, including one with a phone number and one with an email address. |
| Messages | Supported transfer category | Check recent conversations and important message threads before wiping the Android phone. |
| Photos and videos | Supported transfer category | Verify both the item count and a sample of older media. Cloud-only media may require a separate sign-in or download. |
| Files and folders | Supported transfer category | Open the Files app and inspect folders that contain documents, scans, or recordings. |
| Accessibility settings | Apple lists these as transferable settings | Review the iPhone’s accessibility controls after migration; not every Android control has an iOS equivalent. |
| Display settings | Apple lists these as transferable settings | Check appearance, text size, and related display options rather than assuming every Android preference has a matching iPhone option. |
| Bookmarks | Supported transfer category | Open the iPhone browser and verify important saved pages. |
| Email accounts | Supported transfer category | Confirm that each account is present and that you can authenticate it. Some providers may request a new sign-in. |
| WhatsApp messages and media | Apple lists these as transferable | Use the supported migration flow and verify chats and attachments inside WhatsApp. |
| Call history | Supported transfer category | Check the Recents list for the calls you need to retain. |
| Calendars | Supported transfer category | Compare upcoming appointments with the original calendar account. |
| Some free apps | Some may be matched when an equivalent is available in both stores and is eligible for transfer | Download or open each important app and sign in. Matching does not guarantee that app data or preferences will move. |
Apple directs users to the app developer for third-party app data that is not covered by the automated transfer. Banking apps, authenticator apps, games, downloaded maps, and specialist work apps commonly have their own migration or backup procedure. Check those procedures while the Android phone is still usable.
If the iPhone is already set up
- Decide whether starting over is practical. If you choose the automated Move to iOS route, back up the iPhone, erase it, and follow Apple’s setup instructions from the beginning.
- If you do not want to erase it, move content manually using the relevant cloud account, computer transfer, email account, or app-specific export. This route may require separate steps for photos, documents, contacts, calendars, and messaging apps.
- For every important app, confirm that its account, saved data, and two-factor authentication method work on the iPhone before retiring the Android device.
Check that the car supports Apple CarPlay
Android Auto compatibility does not prove that the same vehicle supports CarPlay. Confirm Apple CarPlay support for the exact vehicle or stereo, not merely the model family or a nearby trim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Record the vehicle’s make, model, model year, trim, and infotainment system name.
- Check the vehicle manual or the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation for Apple CarPlay.
- Identify whether the vehicle offers wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, or both.
- Find the USB port designated for smartphone integration. A vehicle may have charging-only ports as well as a data-capable port.
- Check whether the system permits more than one paired phone and how it chooses the active device.
Google’s Android Auto setup guidance also tells owners to consult the vehicle manual or manufacturer for model-specific setup. That advice matters here because the phone may connect successfully while the car still requires a separate projection selection.

Set up wired Apple CarPlay
Use this method when the vehicle supports wired CarPlay, when wireless pairing is unavailable, or when you are troubleshooting a wireless connection.
- Start the vehicle and leave it in a safe, stationary state while pairing.
- On the iPhone, open
Settings > Siriand make sure Siri is enabled. CarPlay requires Siri to be available. - Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s smartphone-integration USB port. Apple recommends an Apple USB cable for wired CarPlay.
- Unlock the iPhone if it asks for permission, then read and accept any CarPlay prompt that appears on the phone or vehicle display.
- Wait for CarPlay Home to appear. If the display remains on the vehicle’s normal menu, select the CarPlay logo or the smartphone-integration option shown by that system.
Before buying a cable, check the connectors on both ends, the iPhone port, and the vehicle port. Your existing cable is suitable if it fits both devices and carries data. A charge-only cable will not establish wired CarPlay. A cable cannot add CarPlay to a vehicle that does not support it.
If the vehicle supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, Apple says the first wired connection may display an alert offering wireless connection on later attempts. Accepting that prompt can create the wireless pairing, but the vehicle still controls how the feature is presented.
Set up wireless Apple CarPlay
Wireless setup requires a vehicle that specifically supports wireless CarPlay. Bluetooth alone is not enough; the vehicle must provide its own CarPlay pairing mode.

- Start the vehicle and put its stereo into wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode, following the vehicle manual if the label differs.
- On the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button if the vehicle uses that button to start phone pairing.
- On the iPhone, open
Settings > General > CarPlay. - Select the vehicle from the available cars. If the vehicle creates a CarPlay Wi-Fi network, make sure
Auto-Joinis enabled for that network. - Accept the pairing and permission prompts on both screens.
- When the car display does not open CarPlay automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle screen.
Some vehicles display CarPlay Home as soon as pairing completes; others leave you on the radio, phone, or device list. That difference is normal and is controlled by the infotainment system.
Make the car use CarPlay instead of Android Auto
If the iPhone pairs but Android Auto still starts, the vehicle may be selecting the previously active phone or projection mode. Look for a menu labeled Phone, Devices, Projection, Smartphone integration, or a similar term.
- Open the vehicle’s paired-device or phone list.
- Select the iPhone rather than the Android phone.
- When the system offers a projection choice, select CarPlay.
- If the system asks which phone should connect automatically, choose the iPhone only if that option exists and reflects how you want the car to behave.
- Start CarPlay from the vehicle display if it does not launch by itself.
Do not assume that deleting the Android phone is required. Some systems can retain several devices, while others prioritize the first phone, the last phone used, or a phone connected by USB. The manual for the exact infotainment system is the authoritative source for changing that priority.

| Category | Expectation | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts, messages, photos, videos, files, bookmarks, email accounts, call history, and calendars | Apple lists these as transferable categories, subject to the Move to iOS process and account conditions. | Verify representative items on the iPhone before retiring the Android phone. |
| Accessibility and display settings | Apple lists these settings as transferable, but an Android control may not have an identical iOS equivalent. | Review the iPhone’s settings after migration and adjust anything that did not map directly. |
| Some free apps | Some eligible apps may be matched when versions exist in both stores. | Install each important app, sign in, and follow the developer’s migration instructions. |
| Android Auto settings | Not listed by Apple as a transferable category. | Plan to configure CarPlay separately. |
| Navigation favorites, audio preferences, and app-specific preferences | Not established as part of Apple’s general migration list. | Check the relevant account or app for cloud sync or export, then recreate preferences if necessary. |
| Vehicle pairing records and automatic-phone priority | Varies by make, model, year, and infotainment system. | Use the vehicle manual and test the active-phone behavior before relying on it. |
Apple’s migration list should not be expanded into a promise that every account state, app preference, navigation favorite, audio setting, or vehicle record will move. The fact that accessibility and display settings are listed does not mean all Android system settings have an iPhone equivalent.
Wired or wireless: which connection should you use?
| Connection | Requirement | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired CarPlay | A vehicle USB port that supports data and a suitable cable | Works in vehicles without wireless CarPlay and provides a straightforward fallback when wireless setup fails | Requires the phone to remain connected and depends on the correct port and cable |
| Wireless CarPlay | A vehicle that supports wireless CarPlay, plus Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing | Avoids a cable during ordinary drives | Requires a vehicle-specific wireless pairing flow and can fail if Wi-Fi, Auto-Join, or the vehicle mode is incorrect |
Neither method is universally better. Choose based on the capability of your vehicle and whether you prefer a cable-free connection. If wireless pairing is unreliable, wired CarPlay is a practical diagnostic path when the vehicle supports it.
Troubleshoot the problem by isolating the variable
CarPlay does not launch over USB
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the vehicle’s data-capable smartphone port, not a charging-only port.
- Try a known data-capable cable that matches the iPhone and vehicle connectors. Apple recommends an Apple USB cable for wired CarPlay.
- Unlock the iPhone and accept any trust, Siri, or CarPlay permission prompt.
- Check that Siri is enabled.
- On the vehicle display, open the phone, projection, or smartphone-integration menu and select CarPlay manually.
Wireless pairing never completes
- Put the stereo into the vehicle’s wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode before searching from the iPhone.
- Turn on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone.
- Open
Settings > General > CarPlayand select the vehicle. - Check the CarPlay network’s
Auto-Joinsetting when the vehicle provides a Wi-Fi network. - Follow the vehicle manual if its steering-wheel button or pairing sequence differs from Apple’s general instructions.
The iPhone pairs, but Android Auto keeps appearing
- Open the vehicle’s device list and select the iPhone.
- Choose CarPlay from the projection selector if the vehicle presents multiple options.
- Disconnect the Android phone temporarily during testing so the car cannot choose it as the active device.
- Check the manual for automatic-connection priority. The behavior is manufacturer-specific.
The vehicle has no CarPlay option
Recheck compatibility for the exact car, trim, year, or aftermarket stereo. Android Auto support alone does not add Apple CarPlay. If the vehicle does not support CarPlay, changing an iPhone setting or buying a cable will not create the feature.

CarPlay appears, but an app or preference is missing
First determine whether the missing item is phone content, an app account, or a vehicle preference. Verify the relevant account, install the iPhone version of the app, and consult its developer for data migration. For vehicle settings and pairing behavior, consult the vehicle manual rather than treating the issue as an Android-to-iPhone transfer failure.
A safe switching checklist
- Back up the Android phone and any existing iPhone data.
- List the accounts, apps, messages, photos, files, calendars, and authentication methods you cannot afford to lose.
- Use Move to iOS during initial iPhone setup, or choose a manual migration path if the iPhone is already configured.
- Verify important data and app access on the iPhone while the Android phone remains available.
- Confirm Apple CarPlay support and the supported connection mode for the exact vehicle.
- Enable Siri and connect the iPhone by the vehicle’s wired or wireless procedure.
- Select the iPhone and CarPlay in the vehicle’s device or projection menu when necessary.
- Test a phone call, navigation destination, audio playback, and the steering-wheel voice button while parked.
- Only after the test succeeds should you remove the Android phone, reset it, or rely on the iPhone as your sole in-car device.
What you can and cannot know without the vehicle details
A general guide can identify the correct Apple and iPhone steps, but it cannot name the exact buttons on an unspecified vehicle. The retained Android pairing, simultaneous-phone support, automatic projection priority, USB-port location, and menu labels require the make, model, year, trim, and infotainment system.
If the vehicle manual conflicts with a generic menu path, follow the manual. CarPlay setup and Android-to-iPhone content migration are related during the same upgrade, but they remain separate processes: move the data Apple supports, then build the CarPlay connection the vehicle supports.
