Switching credit card processors without payment downtime requires a staged migration, not a single switch. Keep the current processor live while you build and test the replacement, arrange any supported payment-data transfer, map customers and subscriptions, and move traffic in controlled stages with a rollback path.
Do not close the old account immediately. You may still need it for refunds, disputes, recurring arrangements, historical reporting, and reconciliation until every outstanding transaction is resolved.
What an interruption-free processor switch actually involves
A processor migration changes more than the checkout form. Processor-specific customer IDs, saved-card tokens, subscription records, webhooks, refund references, dispute workflows, settlement reports, and finance reconciliations can all depend on the existing account. If any of those dependencies is missed, a checkout may appear to work while refunds fail, subscriptions charge twice, or accounting records no longer match deposits.

The safest model is parallel operation:
- The existing payment path continues handling live transactions.
- The destination integration is built and tested separately.
- Payment credentials are transferred only through a migration method supported by both providers and the relevant payment method.
- A small share of eligible traffic is routed to the new processor first.
- Volume increases only after acceptance, error, settlement, refund, and recurring-billing checks meet pre-agreed thresholds.
- The old processor remains available for historical obligations until closeout is complete.
Stripe describes this type of carefully executed switch as a way to reduce costs, improve authorization rates, and create a more resilient payments foundation. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee: your providers, contract terms, payment methods, and country may support a different process.

1. Define the migration before requesting an export
Write the scope and success criteria
Record exactly what is moving and what is staying. Scope may include an online checkout, mobile app, invoices, point-of-sale transactions, stored cards, bank-based methods, wallets, subscriptions, one-time payments, marketplaces, or multiple legal entities. Include the countries and currencies involved, because portability and verification requirements can vary by region.
Set measurable acceptance criteria before engineering work starts. Examples include a maximum authorization-error rate compared with the baseline, no duplicate charges, successful test refunds, complete webhook delivery, correct settlement totals, and a defined percentage of migrated subscriptions billing successfully. The figures should be agreed by the business rather than borrowed from a provider’s marketing material.
Assign owners across the business
Give named owners to engineering, finance, operations, customer support, security, and the person authorized to communicate with each processor. The cutover owner needs authority to pause the rollout or return traffic to the old path. Finance should own reconciliation and settlement sign-off; support should own customer communications and escalation; engineering should own integration, monitoring, and rollback.
Schedule away from operational peaks
Choose a period with lower expected volume and staff coverage for the entire monitoring window. Avoid launching immediately before a major promotion, payroll run, subscription renewal peak, or holiday when a small defect could affect many customers. Keep an on-call schedule and an incident channel open during the staged rollout.
2. Check contracts, dependencies, and export requirements
Ask both processors the same questions
Before signing a migration date, ask the current and destination providers for written answers about:
- Which payment methods and credential formats can be transferred.
- Whether the transfer is provider-to-provider, file-based, or unavailable for a particular method.
- Required forms, approvals, fees, encryption, secure-transfer mechanism, and retention rules.
- Export fields, object limits, file formats, mapping files, validation rules, and expected timelines.
- How failed, rejected, expired, or incomplete records are reported.
- Whether customer IDs, payment-method IDs, subscription IDs, mandates, disputes, and refund references remain usable.
- What support is available during the import and how an emergency correction is handled.
Stripe notes that the outgoing processor may impose its own export requirements, including forms or fees. Do not assume that a processor’s ability to import one payment method means it can import all of yours, or that a saved card can be copied as a raw number. A token or vault reference is usable only when the relevant providers support a secure transfer and the destination can accept that credential type.
Inventory every processor-dependent identifier
Search application code, databases, scheduled jobs, analytics, and finance workbooks for the old processor’s identifiers. At minimum, catalog customer IDs, payment-method tokens, subscription and invoice IDs, charge and refund IDs, dispute IDs, webhook signing secrets, merchant-account IDs, settlement report fields, and URLs or credentials used by support tools. Note which systems merely display an identifier and which systems use it to perform an action.

Also document non-payment dependencies: tax calculations, fraud rules, email receipts, order fulfillment triggers, accounting imports, revenue recognition, dunning, cancellation logic, and customer-service lookup. This inventory becomes the migration checklist and the rollback map.
3. Build and test the replacement while payments stay live
Create an isolated test path
Implement the destination processor in its test or sandbox environment without removing the production integration. Use separate credentials, webhook endpoints, logs, and feature flags so a test event cannot alter a live order or subscription. The new path should produce the same internal order states and accounting events as the old path, even if the provider’s response fields differ.
Test the entire payment lifecycle
A successful authorization is only one test. Exercise:
- New-card authorization and capture, including partial and full capture where supported.
- Declines, timeouts, malformed requests, duplicate submissions, and network retries.
- Full and partial refunds, including refunds after the original transaction has settled.
- Webhook delivery, signature verification, retries, out-of-order events, and duplicate events.
- Subscription creation, renewal, failed renewal, retry or dunning, cancellation, pause, and plan changes.
- Currency, tax, shipping, installments, wallet, bank, and other methods actually used by your customers.
- Chargebacks and the way evidence, status changes, and finance notifications are represented.
- Settlement reports and the fields needed to match processor deposits to internal orders.
Test failure handling as deliberately as the happy path. A payment request that times out may have succeeded at the processor; blindly retrying it can create a duplicate charge. Use idempotency controls where the destination supports them, and make the order state authoritative enough to distinguish an unknown outcome from a confirmed decline.
Prepare people and observability
Train support agents on the new transaction and refund lookup fields, customer-facing wording, and escalation route. Give finance examples of the new settlement and fee reports. Before live traffic moves, dashboards should show authorization outcomes, processor errors, webhook lag, duplicate-event counts, refunds, recurring charges, settlement totals, and traffic split by processor.
4. Transfer, map, and reconcile payment data
Design the mapping before the export
Create a durable mapping between old and new identifiers. A typical record links the old customer ID to the new customer ID, each old payment-method reference to its imported replacement, and each subscription to its destination subscription. Keep status, currency, billing interval, next-billing date, plan, quantity, tax treatment, and cancellation state in the reconciliation dataset.
Do not overwrite the original identifiers. Store both sides, the import batch or snapshot date, and the migration result so support and finance can trace a transaction during the transition. Restrict access to this mapping because it can reveal sensitive payment relationships even when it does not contain raw card numbers.

Coordinate the export and import
Arrange the transfer window with both providers. Confirm when the outgoing snapshot is taken, when the destination begins importing, how records are validated, and when mapping results are returned. Reconcile counts by object type: customers, payment methods, subscriptions, active mandates, and any other portable records. Investigate every rejected or incomplete row rather than silently dropping it.
If a customer changes a card, subscription, or billing state at the old processor after the export snapshot, determine whether the provider supports a delta transfer or whether you need a second export and reconciliation. A migration that matches the snapshot but ignores later changes can charge an old card or omit a cancellation.
Never treat raw card copying as the default
Card numbers and authentication data are subject to security and compliance controls. The practical question is whether the two providers support a secure, approved transfer for the exact payment method and region. If they do not, plan a customer-assisted update flow, such as asking customers to enter a payment method at the next checkout or renewal, and communicate the reason without exposing sensitive data. Do not place card numbers in ordinary exports, spreadsheets, logs, email, or support tickets.
Stripe reports that its guide covers more than 15,000 customer migrations and 410 million payment-method migrations. Those are Stripe-reported figures; the source metadata does not reliably establish the years, and they are not independent industry statistics or a promise that your providers can reproduce that path.
5. Move recurring billing without double charges
Map subscriptions deliberately
For every active recurring arrangement, match the old customer and subscription to the destination records. Verify the amount, currency, billing interval, renewal date, trial status, discounts, tax settings, quantity, payment method, and cancellation or pause state. Test at least one renewal-like cycle in the destination’s test environment, including a failed payment and the resulting customer notification.
Choose the point at which future billing changes
Do not switch a subscription merely because its customer record imported. Switch future billing only when the destination payment method, subscription, webhook processing, and finance reporting are ready. Define which system owns a renewal during the cutover window and record that decision so a retry cannot be sent to both processors.
Cancel the old recurring arrangement at the right time
After the destination subscription is active and its first billing responsibility is confirmed, cancel or disable the old recurring arrangement according to the providers’ documented procedure. Verify the old record is not still scheduled to charge. Keep a list of exceptions—such as customers who must update a payment method—and route those customers through a controlled recovery process rather than creating a second subscription.

Monitor migrated subscriptions separately from new subscriptions. Stripe advises that authorization performance can take time to normalize after migration; treat that as Stripe’s observation, not a universal timing guarantee.
6. Cut over gradually with a tested rollback
Define the traffic switch
Use a feature flag, routing rule, or equivalent control that can change the processor without a code redeploy. Start with a small, clearly identified group of eligible transactions. Exclude complex cases until the basic path is stable, or include them only when they have passed dedicated tests. Keep the old integration deployable and its credentials valid.

- Announce the change to the on-call team and confirm dashboards, alerts, support coverage, and processor contacts.
- Route the first limited share of eligible payments to the destination.
- Check authorizations, declines, timeouts, webhook completion, refunds, order fulfillment, and settlement records against the success criteria.
- Hold or increase the share in controlled steps only after the previous step is stable for the agreed observation period.
- Move the remaining new traffic when results remain within threshold and finance confirms the settlement path.
- Record the exact time, traffic split, batches, exceptions, and decisions for later reconciliation.
Make rollback safe
Rollback means stopping new submissions to the destination and routing eligible new transactions back to the old path; it does not mean resubmitting an already unknown transaction automatically. First determine whether each in-flight request was accepted, declined, or unresolved. Use idempotency keys and processor lookups to prevent a second charge. Preserve the destination records needed to refund or investigate any payment that succeeded before the rollback.
Monitor the signals that matter
Compare the staged traffic with a recent baseline appropriate to the same payment methods, countries, currencies, and customer mix. Watch:
- Authorization and decline rates by method, issuer region, currency, and integration version.
- API errors, timeouts, retries, duplicate submissions, and webhook delay.
- Gross and net settlement, fees, payout timing, and reconciliation differences.
- Refund success, refund timing, disputes, and customer-support contacts.
- Subscription renewals, failed renewals, duplicate charges, and cancellations.
Pause or roll back when an agreed threshold fails, when settlement cannot be reconciled, or when a defect could submit the same payment twice. Do not judge the migration from one unusually good or bad transaction.

Run parallel reconciliation
For each migration batch, compare internal orders with processor charges, refunds, disputes, and settlements. Resolve unmatched records and document timing differences such as pending authorizations or payouts that cross month-end. Finance should sign off that the destination reports contain everything needed for accounting, tax, revenue recognition, and audits.

Keep the former account available
Retain access to the old processor for historical reporting, refunds against old charges, chargebacks, customer questions, and reconciliation. The retention period depends on your contracts, accounting policy, dispute windows, and legal obligations; obtain a written answer from the provider before termination.

Complete a controlled shutdown
When new traffic is stable and outstanding obligations are resolved, disable old production routing, revoke obsolete credentials, archive required reports securely, and update runbooks. Obtain confirmation of account closure and any remaining payout or reserve balance. Keep the migration mapping and audit records under your normal retention and access controls.
How to evaluate a replacement processor
There is no universally best processor. Compare candidates against the channels and markets your business actually serves, not a generic feature list.

Common failure modes and recovery actions
The export contains fewer records than expected
Stop the import and compare the provider’s eligibility rules with your inventory. Check whether the missing records use an unsupported method, belong to another account or region, are expired, or require a form or fee. Obtain a rejected-record report and create a customer-update path for anything that cannot be transferred.

Inspect webhook signatures, endpoint reachability, retry handling, event ordering, and the translation from destination event types to your internal order states. Query the destination directly before retrying a request whose outcome is unknown.
Renewals appear twice
Freeze automated retries for the affected cohort, identify which processor accepted each attempt, and issue refunds only after confirming the duplicate. Check that old subscriptions were canceled and that the destination did not create a second record during a retried import. Correct the mapping before resuming the cohort.
Authorization rates fall after cutover
Segment the change by payment method, issuer country, currency, customer cohort, and error code. Verify routing, authentication, merchant descriptors, fraud settings, and credential mapping. Keep the old path available while you investigate; a temporary rollback is safer than repeatedly retrying declined or unknown transactions.
Finance cannot match payouts
Compare settlement date, currency, fee fields, refunds, reserves, and payout identifiers rather than matching only order totals. Confirm whether pending transactions or cross-border timing explain the difference, and do not close the old account until every unmatched balance has an owner and resolution.

- Scope, owners, markets, methods, timeline, success thresholds, and rollback authority are documented.
- Contracts, export rules, fees, forms, security procedures, and provider support contacts are confirmed.
- Processor-dependent IDs, webhooks, subscriptions, refunds, disputes, settlement reports, and downstream systems are inventoried.
- The destination integration is live in a test environment while the old production path remains unchanged.
- Authorizations, failures, refunds, webhooks, recurring billing, disputes, and reconciliation are tested.
- Transfer eligibility and secure credential portability are confirmed for each payment method.
- Old-to-new mappings, rejected records, post-snapshot changes, and exception handling are reconciled.
- Support, finance, operations, and engineering know the cutover and escalation procedures.
- Traffic splitting, dashboards, alerts, idempotency, and rollback have been exercised.
- The old processor remains available until refunds, disputes, historical reporting, and reconciliation are complete.
