In GTA 5 Story Mode, hold the character-switch control, highlight an available protagonist, and release the control. The default is Down on the controller D-pad or Alt on a PC keyboard. On a PlayStation or Xbox controller, use the right stick while holding Down to move the selection.
This wheel is for Story Mode protagonists. It does not switch between your GTA Online characters; Online character management uses separate menus and rules.

The controls at a glance
The control depends on the input device, not simply the console brand. Both PlayStation and Xbox controllers use the same default button, and a controller connected to a PC follows the controller layout rather than the keyboard layout.
| Platform or input | Default control | Selection method |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controller | Hold Down on the D-pad | While holding Down, move the right stick to an available character, then release Down |
| Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S controller | Hold Down on the D-pad | While holding Down, move the right stick to an available character, then release Down |
| PC keyboard | Hold Alt | Keep Alt held while selecting an available character in the wheel, then release Alt |
| PC with a controller | Hold Down on the D-pad | Use the same wheel and right-stick procedure as on a console |
Rockstar Games Customer Support identifies Down on a controller and Alt on a keyboard as the default switch control. The hold, highlight, and release sequence is also described in a September 5, 2026 guide. If you changed your bindings, the button shown in your Controls settings takes precedence over these defaults.

The short answer
There are three parts to the action: hold the switch control, highlight an available protagonist, and release the control. Tapping the button is not enough. On a gamepad, Down opens the wheel and the right stick moves the highlight. On the default keyboard layout, Alt performs the same hold action, while the on-screen prompt shows the selection input.
The wheel only concerns the playable protagonists in the current Story Mode session. It is not an account switcher, a way to select a GTA Online avatar, or a menu for deleting or creating Online characters.
How to switch protagonists in Story Mode
Step 1: Confirm that you are in Story Mode
Load the single-player Story Mode session. The protagonist wheel belongs to Story Mode, where the game provides several playable protagonists. It is not the tool used to change the characters associated with your GTA Online account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 2: Hold the switch control
Press and hold Down on the D-pad on a controller. On a keyboard, press and hold Alt. Do not merely tap the button: the wheel is opened by holding the control.
Step 3: Highlight an available character
With the control still held, the Character Wheel appears. On a controller, move the right stick toward the character you want. Only an available selection can be chosen; a slot that is unavailable cannot be activated by moving the stick over it.
On a keyboard, keep Alt held while using the on-screen selection controls to highlight the available character. The exact secondary input can depend on your configured keyboard bindings, so follow the control prompt displayed by your copy of the game.
Step 4: Release the switch control
Release Down or Alt after the desired character is highlighted. Releasing confirms the selection and returns you to gameplay as that protagonist. If you release before moving the selection, the game may leave you as the current character instead.

Step 5: Wait for the transition
The game may show a short transition before placing the selected protagonist in the world. Do not press the switch control repeatedly during that transition; wait for normal gameplay input to return.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
The PS4 and PS5 use the same default Story Mode action:
- Enter Story Mode.
- Press and hold Down on the D-pad.
- Move the right stick to highlight the available protagonist you want.
- Release Down to confirm.
The console generation does not change the basic gesture. If Down does nothing, check whether the game is receiving input from the controller you are holding and then verify the current Switch Characters binding in the game’s control settings.
PlayStation owners do not need a separate PS4 procedure and PS5 procedure. The relevant distinction is the controller input and the game mode. A PS5 running the game with a keyboard attached should be treated as a keyboard-input case only if the game is actually using that keyboard; otherwise, follow the active controller’s displayed binding.

Xbox controllers use the same default switch input as PlayStation controllers:

- Make sure the session is Story Mode.
- Hold Down on the D-pad.
- Use the right stick to highlight an available character.
- Release Down.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S therefore do not require different character-switch instructions. The important distinction is whether you are using a controller and whether its bindings have been customized, not which Xbox generation you own.
If you alternate between an Xbox controller and keyboard on a PC, do not assume that changing the keyboard binding changes the controller binding. Check the binding for the device you are holding, then follow the matching hold-and-release sequence.
PC keyboard and mouse
On the default PC keyboard layout, hold Alt to open the Character Wheel. Keep Alt held while you select an available protagonist, then release it to switch.

If Alt does not open the wheel, the most likely explanation is that the binding has been changed or the game is not currently in Story Mode. Open the game’s in-game Settings or Controls screen and find the action labeled Switch Characters. Use the key shown there rather than assuming Alt is still assigned.
Keyboard layouts and custom bindings can change the secondary selection input. The reliable test is the control prompt shown while the wheel is open: hold the configured switch key, move the selection using the displayed input, and release the same switch key to confirm.
Remember that Alt is a default identity for the action, not a requirement tied to every physical keyboard. If you remapped controls for comfort, accessibility, or a different layout, the remapped key is the correct one. Troubleshooting an old default after you have changed the profile can make a working setup appear broken.
PC with a PlayStation or Xbox controller
A controller connected to a PC uses the controller version of the action. Hold Down on the D-pad, move the right stick to the desired available character, and release Down.

Alt is the default keyboard binding; Down on the D-pad is the default controller binding. If the game has assigned a custom controller layout, inspect the controller binding for Switch Characters and follow that assignment.
Before testing, identify which device is active. If a controller is connected but the game is currently reading keyboard input, the D-pad command may not produce the expected result. Conversely, a keyboard test will not tell you whether a customized controller profile is correct. Verify one device, one binding, and one input sequence at a time.
What the Character Wheel actually selects
The wheel is a quick selector for available Story Mode protagonists. It does not list every character who appears in the game, and it is not an inventory or profile menu. The practical test is whether a slot is available for selection at that moment. If the highlight will not settle on a slot, choose one that the wheel presents as available rather than forcing the control.
The sequence is intentionally temporary: holding the switch control opens the wheel, moving the selector chooses a target, and releasing commits the choice. Releasing before a new target is highlighted can leave the current protagonist active. Holding the control after a successful selection is unnecessary; once the game accepts the release, return to ordinary gameplay input.

These are separate systems:
| Question | Story Mode | GTA Online |
|---|---|---|
| What does the wheel switch? | The available single-player protagonists | It is not the Online character selector |
| How is the action opened? | Hold Down on a controller or Alt on a keyboard | Use Online-specific character-management flows |
| Where are characters managed? | During the Story Mode session | Through GTA Online menus, with options that differ between Enhanced and Legacy versions |
Rockstar’s Story Mode support documentation refers to bringing up the Character Wheel with Down on the D-pad and selecting a Story Mode character. Its separate Online documentation treats character management, including deletion, as an Online function and distinguishes Enhanced and Legacy versions. Consequently, pressing Down or Alt while playing Online should not be expected to cycle through your Online characters.
Rank #3
If your goal is to manage an Online character, leave the Story Mode wheel and use the appropriate GTA Online flow for your game version. Do not interpret the absence of the protagonist wheel in Online as a controller failure. It is the expected separation between the two modes.
What to check when the wheel does not appear
1. Check the game mode
Return to Story Mode and try again. The protagonist wheel is a Story Mode feature. If you are in GTA Online, use the Online character-management menus instead of the Story Mode control.
2. Verify the configured binding
Open the in-game Settings or Controls section and locate Switch Characters. A custom binding replaces the documented defaults. On a keyboard, this may no longer be Alt; on a controller, it may no longer be D-pad Down.
3. Hold the control long enough
The action is a hold, not a quick press. Keep Down or Alt depressed until the wheel is visible, then continue holding it while you highlight a character.
4. Use the correct secondary input
For a controller, move the right stick while the switch control remains held. Moving the stick first, or releasing Down before the selection is highlighted, can leave the current protagonist unchanged.
5. Make sure a selectable character is available
The wheel can show characters that are not currently available for selection. Highlight an available slot rather than an unavailable one, then release the switch control.
6. Consider the current game state without assuming a specific lockout
Some gameplay states may temporarily restrict switching, but Rockstar’s cited support pages do not provide a complete list of every mission, activity, or other state that can disable the wheel. If the binding is correct and you are in Story Mode, leave the current activity or return to ordinary free-roam play, then test the wheel again. Avoid treating an individual mission behavior as a universal rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute7. Test the input device itself
If no control prompt or wheel appears, check that the game recognizes the controller or keyboard you intend to use. On PC, confirm that the controller is the active input device if you are trying to use D-pad Down. If another device is active, retry with the device whose binding you verified.
8. Test the complete sequence, not just the first button
A wheel that opens but does not switch points to a selection or release problem rather than an opening problem. Hold the configured control, move the right stick or displayed keyboard selector onto an available character, keep the switch control held, and release only after the highlight is in place. This separates a missing wheel from an unconfirmed choice.
How customized controls change the instructions
The Down and Alt commands are Rockstar’s documented defaults, not permanent requirements. A remapped control is valid as long as it is assigned to the action named Switch Characters. This matters when:
- You use a nonstandard keyboard layout.
- You changed controller bindings for accessibility or comfort.
- A controller profile remaps the D-pad.
- You alternate between keyboard input and a gamepad on PC.
Use the binding shown in the game’s Controls screen, keep that control held until the wheel is open, select an available character, and release it to confirm. If the displayed binding conflicts with the device you are holding, switch back to that device or reassign the action before troubleshooting anything else.
Customization also explains why two players can report different buttons and both be correct. One may be using Rockstar’s defaults while another has a remapped profile. Compare the action name, not only the physical key or button. The action labeled Switch Characters is the reference point across keyboard and controller layouts.

Common mistakes and their fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when Down is tapped | The switch action requires a hold | Hold Down until the wheel appears |
| Alt does nothing on PC | The keyboard binding was changed, or the session is Online | Check Switch Characters in Controls and confirm Story Mode |
| The wheel appears but the character does not change | The selection was not highlighted, or the control was released too early | Keep the control held, move the right stick or displayed selector, then release |
| A desired slot cannot be selected | The character is unavailable in the current state | Choose an available slot or retry after returning to ordinary Story Mode play |
| Controller instructions fail on PC | The game is using keyboard input or a custom controller profile | Confirm the active device and inspect its Switch Characters binding |
| You are trying to change an Online character | The Story Mode wheel is being used for the wrong mode | Open the GTA Online character-management flow for your game version |
Do you need special hardware?
No special accessory or replacement part is part of the character-switch procedure. Existing owners use the built-in keyboard or controller controls. On a console, the default action uses the controller already used for gameplay. On PC, either the keyboard or a connected controller works according to its active binding.
If you are deciding whether to buy the game, a physical or digital Grand Theft Auto V edition is the relevant purchase consideration; an accessory is not required merely to open the Character Wheel. Edition availability and pricing can change, so check the current platform store or retailer rather than relying on an old listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which instruction should you remember?
For a controller on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, remember hold D-pad Down, move the right stick, release Down. For the default PC keyboard, remember hold Alt, choose an available character, release Alt. Both procedures apply to Story Mode only. If they do not match what you see, the first things to verify are the game mode and the current Switch Characters binding.
Why the platform comparison is simpler than it looks
There is no separate PlayStation gesture and Xbox gesture in the documented defaults. Both controller families use Down on the D-pad, and both use the right stick to highlight a target while Down remains held. The platform-specific difference is mainly the hardware label on the controller and the generation of the console.
PC has two legitimate paths. Keyboard users start with Alt, while PC players using a gamepad follow the controller path. This is why a PC guide that lists only Alt is incomplete for controller users, and a console guide that discusses Alt is addressing an input device that may not be active. Start by identifying the device, then apply its default or customized Switch Characters binding.
