You can move bookmarks and saved passwords to a new browser without deleting the old browser. Install the target browser, run its built-in browser-data importer, choose the correct source profile and data types, then verify important bookmarks and sign-ins before removing anything. If direct password transfer is unavailable, use the target browser’s supported export format—usually an HTML file for bookmarks or a CSV file for passwords.
What moves easily—and what does not
Browser migration is not one operation. Bookmarks, passwords, browsing history, extensions, autofill details, payment methods, cookies and open tabs may each use a different transfer route. A browser can import one category while excluding another, so select the categories deliberately rather than assuming that an “import everything” option copies every item.

The safest plan is to treat bookmarks and passwords as two separate projects. Keep the old browser and its profile intact until both have passed your checks.

Prepare before installing or importing
Identify the exact source and target
Write down the browser you are leaving, the browser you are installing, your operating system and whether the computer is personally managed or controlled by an employer or school. Menu names and permitted imports can differ between Windows, Linux and other platforms, and managed policies can disable export or import.

Find the profile that actually contains your data
Many browsers support multiple profiles. Bookmarks and passwords in one profile may not appear when the importer is pointed at another. Open the old browser and confirm that the bookmarks you need are visible in its bookmarks manager and that expected accounts appear in its password manager. If the target importer offers a profile selector, choose that matching profile.
Save important open tabs
If open tabs represent work you still need, create a temporary bookmark folder in the old browser and save the tabs into it. Mozilla’s Chrome-to-Firefox guidance recommends this approach because open tabs are not a reliable long-term migration format.
Leave the old browser installed
Do not uninstall the source browser or delete its profile before verification. Mozilla states that importing from Chrome to Firefox does not delete Chrome or change Chrome’s settings. Keeping the original profile gives you a recovery path if a folder or password is missing.

Use the target browser’s built-in importer first
Native import is normally the cleanest route because the target browser can read the source profile and place each supported data type in its own store. Close unnecessary browser windows, but do not erase the source profile when the importer asks for access.
- Install and open the target browser from its official installer.
- Open the target browser’s settings and search for import, browser data, bookmarks or passwords.
- Choose the source browser and, where offered, the source profile.
- Select only the data categories you intend to move. At minimum, treat bookmarks and passwords as separate selections.
- Start the import and wait for the completion message before closing the browser.
- Open the target bookmarks manager and password manager immediately, then perform the verification checks described below.
Firefox’s import wizard lets you choose a source browser, profile and data categories. It may request the computer’s system password before reading protected credentials. Microsoft Edge provides an import-browser-data flow as well. A system-password prompt is an access check for the computer; it is not the password for your browser account.

Move bookmarks and favorites
Direct browser-to-browser import
Run the target browser’s importer and select bookmarks or favorites. Afterward, open the bookmarks menu and the full bookmarks library rather than relying on the toolbar alone. The importer may create a separate folder instead of merging items into your existing top-level folders.
Edge documents that imported favorites can appear in a folder on the Favorites bar, possibly named “Imported.” Chrome documents that imported bookmarks may appear in “Other bookmarks” or on the bookmarks bar depending on the existing data. If you do not see an expected link, inspect these locations before repeating the import.
Export bookmarks from Chrome as an HTML file
When the source browser is not detected, use Chrome’s bookmark manager to export bookmarks as an HTML file. Save the file in a private local folder, not a shared drive. The HTML file contains bookmark links and folder structure; it is not a password file.
- In Chrome, open the bookmarks manager.
- Use the manager’s menu and choose the export option.
- Save the resulting HTML file with a clear name, such as
bookmarks-transfer.html, in a location you control. - In the target browser, open its bookmarks manager or import settings.
- Choose the option to import bookmarks from an HTML file and select the saved file.
- Open the bookmarks library and locate the imported folder before reorganizing anything.
Import an HTML file into Firefox or Edge
Firefox and Edge document HTML bookmark import. Select the HTML-file option in the target browser’s bookmarks manager, choose the file exported from the source, and wait for the import to finish. If the target already contains bookmarks, the imported set may be added alongside them rather than replacing them.
Check the result
- Confirm that the main folders exist and contain a plausible number of links.
- Open several high-value links, including work, banking, government and recovery pages.
- Check that nested folders and bookmarks saved from important open tabs are present.
- Look for duplicate folders before deleting anything; an apparent duplicate may contain the only copy of a link.
Move saved passwords
Try the target importer, but do not assume it supports your pair
Select the password or login-data category in the target browser’s importer when it is offered. The browser may ask for your operating-system password to unlock the source credential store. Password import support is platform- and version-dependent, so a successful bookmark import does not prove that passwords were copied.

Chrome to Firefox on Windows or Linux: use a CSV file
Mozilla’s current documentation says Chrome passwords can no longer be imported automatically into Firefox on Windows or Linux. Instead, export the credentials from Google Password Manager as a CSV file, then use Firefox’s migration wizard to import that file. Mozilla describes the user-interface change as beginning with Firefox 139 in English locales and Firefox 140 in all locales; the limitation applies to current Firefox releases covered by that documentation.
- In Chrome, open Google Password Manager and choose its export-passwords command.
- Authenticate when prompted and save the CSV file locally. The file contains readable credential data.
- Open Firefox’s import or migration wizard and choose the CSV password option when presented.
- Select the exported file and complete the wizard.
- Open Firefox’s saved-logins manager and check that expected entries are present before deleting the CSV.
Firefox’s documentation also reports that Chrome payment methods can no longer be imported from Chrome on Windows into Firefox because of a Chrome encryption change. Password migration therefore should not be treated as payment-card migration.
Import passwords into Edge from CSV
Microsoft’s Edge instructions place CSV password import at Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Import passwords now. Choose the CSV file produced by the source password manager, complete any confirmation prompts, and then inspect Edge’s password manager for the imported accounts.
When the pair has no documented CSV route
CSV support is not universal. If the target browser does not show a password-import command, check its current help documentation for the exact source browser and operating system. Do not rename an HTML bookmark file to make it look like a CSV, and do not open or edit the credential file in a spreadsheet unless the browser’s instructions explicitly require it; formatting changes can corrupt fields.
Protect the exported password file
A password CSV is usually plain text. Anyone who obtains it may be able to read account names, usernames and passwords, so handle it as a temporary secret rather than as an ordinary download.

- Save it only on a device and account you control.
- Do not email it, upload it to an unknown conversion service or place it in a shared folder.
- Do not copy it to a USB drive merely for a local transfer; an extra copy increases exposure.
- Complete the import before starting cleanup, and keep the file only as long as needed to recover from an import error.
- Delete the CSV afterward, then empty the Recycle Bin or Trash if your operating system retains deleted files there.
- Check common temporary locations such as Downloads and the desktop for duplicate exports.
These precautions reduce exposure; they do not guarantee that a deleted file is unrecoverable on every storage system. If the computer is managed by an organization, follow its credential-handling policy instead of moving passwords through an unapproved file.
Verify the migration before retiring the old browser
Verification is the point at which you discover a wrong profile, unsupported category or incomplete import while the original data is still available.
Bookmark verification
- Open the target browser’s bookmarks manager, not just the toolbar.
- Find the imported folder and compare its major folders with the source browser.
- Open a sample from each important folder, including links with unusual characters or deep folder nesting.
- Search the source and target managers for a few distinctive bookmark titles to catch misplaced items.
Password verification
- Open the target browser’s saved-password manager and confirm that entries from several domains are present.
- Choose a small sample of important sites and verify that the saved username is correct.
- Sign in to those sites using the imported credentials, preferably after opening a private window or signing out of the existing session.
- Record any site that requires a password reset or multi-factor challenge; that behavior can reflect the site’s security policy rather than a failed import.
Saved credentials do not guarantee that an existing website session will remain active. Cookies, device trust and one-time authentication tokens are separate from the password record, so expect to sign in again on some sites.
Only then remove the source
Keep the old browser and its profile until important bookmarks open and important accounts accept the imported credentials. Once you are confident, you can uninstall the old browser or delete its profile according to your operating system’s normal procedure. If anything is missing, return to the source profile and repeat only the affected category rather than importing everything again.

Importing moves data into the new browser on the current computer. It does not automatically keep that data synchronized with phones or other computers. After verification, configure the target browser’s own sync service on each device where you want the data available.

Firefox Sync can synchronize Firefox bookmarks and saved passwords across Firefox devices when you sign in with a Mozilla account. This is a Firefox-to-Firefox synchronization feature, not a mechanism for importing data from another browser. Enable it only after confirming that the local Firefox profile contains the records you intend to synchronize.
Troubleshoot common failures
The source browser is missing from the importer
Confirm that the source browser is installed and that you are using the operating-system account that owns its profile. Open the source browser once, verify the profile, close it, and run the importer again. If it still does not appear, use the source browser’s HTML bookmark export and investigate whether the target documents a CSV password route.
Bookmarks imported but seem to have disappeared
Inspect the full bookmarks library, the “Other bookmarks” area, the bookmarks bar and folders named “Imported” or similar. A second import can create another folder, so search by a distinctive bookmark title before trying again.

Passwords are missing while bookmarks are present
This usually indicates an unsupported password route, a protected source store that was not unlocked, or a different source profile. Check the target browser’s documented support for your operating system. For Chrome-to-Firefox on Windows or Linux, use the Google Password Manager CSV method rather than expecting automatic import.
The CSV file is rejected
Export a fresh file from the source password manager and select the target browser’s password-import command, not its bookmark-import command. Keep the file in its original CSV format and avoid opening it in software that may alter delimiters or encoding.
Some accounts still require sign-in
That is expected when cookies or active sessions were not transferred. Use the target browser’s saved credential, complete multi-factor authentication and check whether the site has additional device-verification requirements.
A work computer blocks export or import
Organization-managed policies may intentionally disable password export, browser migration or access to profile files. Do not bypass those controls. Ask the administrator for an approved migration process or use the organization’s managed account and browser policy.

- Identify the source browser, target browser, operating system and profile.
- Save important open tabs into a bookmark folder.
- Install the target browser and leave the source browser installed.
- Run the target browser’s native importer first.
- Verify bookmark folders and inspect “Imported” or “Other bookmarks” locations.
- Verify saved passwords separately from bookmarks.
- Use HTML for bookmark fallback and the target’s documented CSV process for passwords.
- Protect the CSV and delete every temporary copy after successful verification.
- Test important links and sign-ins while the original profile remains available.
- Configure the target browser’s own sync only after the local migration is complete.
- Remove the old browser only when you no longer need its profile for recovery.
