Start with the provider you want to join, not the one you are leaving. In the UK, the normal One Touch Switch process lets the new provider coordinate the transfer, so you usually should not cancel your existing broadband first. Check availability, contract charges and bundled services before ordering, then follow both providers’ activation instructions. Ofcom’s current guidance says any loss of service should last no longer than one working day, with compensation in specified circumstances—but that is a maximum protection, not a promise of completely uninterrupted connectivity.
What One Touch Switch does
One Touch Switch is the standard route for changing broadband provider in the UK. You contact the provider you want to join and ask it to arrange the switch. The gaining provider collects the information needed for the transfer, contacts your current provider and coordinates the changeover.
Do not independently cancel the old broadband before placing the new order unless the incoming provider explicitly tells you that a different process applies. Cancelling first can create an avoidable gap, while the coordinated route is designed to move the service with the least disruption.

The new provider should tell you whether your order needs an engineer visit, equipment delivery, an installation appointment or an action at home. Ask for the planned activation date and what will happen to your current service on that date.

Check these details before you order
A low headline price or a faster advertised speed does not by itself make a switch suitable. Check the following against your exact address and household needs.
| Decision point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Whether the proposed network and package are available at your address | Coverage and technology vary by location; an offer shown online may not be orderable at your property. |
| Total cost | Monthly price, contract length, setup or installation charges and equipment costs | A cheaper monthly tariff can cost more once one-off charges or a longer commitment are included. |
| Existing contract | Your current minimum-term end date and any early termination charge | Leaving before the term ends may create a fee even though notice-period charges are treated separately. |
| Performance | Expected speed at your address and any usage, traffic or upload limitations | Choose for the work, streaming, gaming, calls and number of users in your home—not just the advertised maximum. |
| Installation | Engineer appointment, delivery date, activation steps and equipment supplied | A missed appointment or missing router can delay the changeover. |
| Bundles | Landline, provider email, television and other services attached to the old account | Moving broadband can change or end linked services that you still use. |
Ofcom’s broadband-switching guidance says the current provider should supply information about the switch, including applicable charges and affected services. Read that information before confirming the order rather than relying on a remembered tariff or an old bill.
How to switch step by step
1. Choose and validate the replacement package
Ask the prospective provider to confirm the service at your precise address, the expected speed range, contract term, total recurring price and one-off costs. Confirm whether the connection is delivered over the same physical network as your current service or requires a different installation. The provider should explain any engineer visit, delivery, activation window and equipment requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the order reference, the promised go-live date and the support contact. Save the confirmation email or download the order summary so you can compare it with later bills.
2. Place the order through the new provider
Tell the new provider that you want to switch using One Touch Switch. Be ready to provide your address, current provider and the services you want moved. Identify any landline number or bundle component that must be retained.
The new provider should handle the transfer with the old provider. Unless it gives you different, explicit instructions, leave the existing broadband active and do not submit a separate cancellation request at this stage.
3. Review the switching information from your current provider
Your current provider should send information about what the switch will affect. Check the stated early termination charge, the date on which your existing service will end, and whether a landline, email address or television package is linked to broadband.

An early termination charge can apply when you leave during a minimum contract term. The rule that prevents the old provider charging a notice period after the switch date does not remove a valid early termination charge. Ask the provider to show how any fee was calculated and keep the response.
4. Prepare the home connection
Keep the old router and connection powered and connected until the new provider’s instructions say to change over. If a new router is supplied, check the delivery as soon as it arrives and keep its setup instructions. Do not buy a generic router simply because you are switching; compatibility and configuration requirements depend on the service, and the provider should state what is needed.
On activation day, follow the provider’s sequence for connecting the new equipment. Once the new Wi-Fi is live, phones, laptops, televisions, cameras and smart-home devices may need to join the new network. If the new router allows it, using the same Wi-Fi name and password as the old router can reduce reconnection work, but replace weak or reused passwords with a strong one and check that every device reconnects.
5. Confirm that the new service works
Test a wired connection if possible, then test Wi-Fi in the rooms where you normally work or stream. Check download and upload performance against the expectation supplied for your address, and verify that voice calls, work VPNs, gaming consoles and streaming devices operate normally.

6. Let the coordinated switch complete
Under One Touch Switch, the old service should cease automatically when the new service is activated. The old provider must not add a notice-period charge after the switch date. Check the final bill for the closing date, any agreed early termination charge and refunds or credits for service paid in advance.
What “without losing service” really means
One Touch Switch reduces the work you must do, but it cannot guarantee that every household stays online continuously. Ofcom’s current guidance describes one working day as the maximum period a customer should be without service during a switch. Where the rules’ conditions are met, the provider must compensate for a loss lasting beyond that period.

Treat the activation date as a possible changeover window. Avoid scheduling an important remote presentation, exam or medical appointment that depends on the connection at that time. Keep mobile data available as a temporary fallback and make sure essential contact numbers are stored somewhere other than an online account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the service has not returned within the stated protection period, contact the new provider immediately, report the exact time the connection failed and request a fault reference. Ask what compensation process applies and keep screenshots, outage times and any appointment records.
When a paid overlap is the better choice
Some households cannot tolerate even a short interruption. You can arrange a separately managed overlap in which the old and new services run at the same time for a period. This is not the One Touch Switch route.
To use an overlap, tell the new provider that you want an independently managed installation and agree a start date. Arrange cancellation separately with the old provider only after you know when the new service will be working. If installation is delayed, change the old cancellation date rather than allowing the existing connection to end automatically.
The trade-off is cost and administration: you may pay both providers during the overlap, and you must manage the old cancellation yourself. Confirm the exact cancellation date, notice rules and final-bill treatment in writing.
Understand early termination, notice and order cancellation
Early termination charges
If your current minimum term has not ended, the provider may apply an early termination charge under your contract. Ask for the amount before ordering and compare it with the savings or service benefit of moving now. A fee that is valid under the contract is separate from a notice-period charge.
Notice-period charges after a coordinated switch
For a normal One Touch Switch transfer, the old provider must not charge you for a notice period after the switch date. Review the final bill to ensure billing stops on the correct date, while remembering that an early termination charge may still appear if you left a minimum term early.

Changing your mind about the new order
Ofcom’s guide states that you can cancel the new order within 14 calendar days by contacting the new provider. If the service has already started, you may still owe for the service used and for installation work. Cancelling the new order does not automatically restore the old broadband, so ask both providers what connection will remain and on what date before you disconnect anything.

Provider email
Some broadband accounts include an email address controlled by the provider. Ask whether that address remains available after broadband ends and whether access changes to a paid or limited service. If it will stop, create a replacement mailbox before switching and move important logins, password resets, bills and two-factor recovery addresses. Export contacts and messages you need to retain.
Landline
Broadband and landline service are often transferred together. If you want to keep the old provider’s telephone service while changing broadband, ask before placing the order; moving one can affect the other. Confirm the number, call features, equipment and emergency-call arrangements supplied with the replacement service.
Television and other bundles
A television package or add-on may not move automatically with broadband. Ask the old provider whether you must cancel or amend it separately, what notice applies and whether returning equipment is required. Obtain a return label or tracking instruction before the account closes, and keep proof of dispatch.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Canceling first: Starting with the old provider can create a gap. Place the One Touch Switch order with the new provider unless it gives different instructions.
- Ignoring the contract end date: Check the early termination charge before treating a low introductory price as a saving.
- Assuming every device will reconnect: Prepare to join the new Wi-Fi and check printers, cameras, streaming boxes and smart-home hubs individually.
- Buying equipment prematurely: Wait for the new provider’s compatibility and setup instructions.
- Forgetting bundled accounts: Email, landline and television may need separate decisions and cancellations.
- Using a self-managed overlap without budgeting: Two active services can mean overlapping bills and an extra cancellation task.
- Planning an important event on activation day: Keep a mobile-data fallback and schedule critical work outside the changeover window.
If the switch goes wrong
The new service is not working
Check that the equipment is connected exactly as instructed, restart it once, and test a wired connection if available. Then contact the new provider with your order reference, activation date, equipment status and the time the fault began. Request a fault reference and ask whether an engineer visit or replacement equipment is required.
The old provider says you did not authorize the switch
If a transfer was not agreed, contact both providers promptly and state that it is an unauthorized switch. Ask the providers to explain what happened, protect the existing service while the dispute is investigated and confirm any correction in writing. Keep copies of messages, bills and call records.

A billing or service dispute remains unresolved
Start with the provider’s customer-service team, then make a formal complaint if the response does not resolve the issue. Ask for a deadlock letter when the provider cannot settle the complaint. Ofcom says you can take the matter to an Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme after six weeks from the formal complaint; the provider will identify whether your case is handled by CISAS or the Communications Ombudsman and explain how to submit it.
A practical switching checklist
- Confirm the replacement service is available at your exact address.
- Write down the new package’s monthly price, contract length, setup cost and expected speed.
- Ask the current provider for the switching information and any early termination charge.
- List every linked service: landline, provider email, television and equipment on loan.
- Decide whether the normal coordinated switch is acceptable or whether you need a paid overlap.
- Order through the new provider using One Touch Switch unless it tells you another process applies.
- Save the order reference, activation date, equipment tracking details and support contacts.
- Keep the existing connection running until the new provider’s instructions require a change.
- Prepare new equipment and a mobile-data fallback for the activation window.
- Test the new service and reconnect household devices.
- Check the final old-provider bill and complete any separate bundle cancellations or equipment returns.
Bottom line for a low-risk switch
For most UK households, the safest sequence is to compare the replacement service, check contract and bundle consequences, then let the new provider run One Touch Switch while the old broadband remains active. Prepare for a possible short outage rather than assuming perfection, and choose a separately managed paid overlap if even a brief interruption would be unacceptable. Keep written records from both providers so you can challenge incorrect charges, restore linked services or escalate a complaint if the change does not go as planned.
