To move a dedicated 7 Days to Die server to the experimental build, update Steam app 294420 with -beta latest_experimental. To return to the public stable build, run the same update without -beta. Stop the server and back up its world and configuration before either change, because experimental updates can break mods and every player must use a client build that matches the server.
What a server branch changes
A branch is the release channel Steam uses when it downloads the dedicated-server files. The dedicated server is Steam app 294420, delivered through SteamCMD. Valve’s developer documentation describes a plain app_update 294420 as the stable/public update. Adding -beta latest_experimental selects the moving experimental channel.
The branch name is exact: use latest_experimental, not experimental. Community reports also describe version 3.0 as being delivered through that same channel rather than through a separate V3 branch. Branch selection changes the files SteamCMD installs; it does not, by itself, convert an existing world, alter gameplay settings, or update player clients.
Prepare the server before changing branches
Branch changes replace executable and content files. Treat the operation as maintenance rather than as a harmless toggle.

- Schedule downtime. Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly before SteamCMD updates its files. Do not update while players are saving or while the server is still writing world data.
- Back up the world. Copy the complete save/world directory to a separate location. Keep the backup outside the server’s installation directory so a later cleanup cannot remove both copies.
- Back up configuration. Preserve the server configuration files, generated settings, scripts, and any service definition used to start the server.
- Record the current build. Note the branch and build shown by your hosting environment, SteamCMD output, or server startup information. This gives you a comparison point if the update appears not to have taken effect.
- Tell players which channel you are using. A client on a different build cannot connect to the server. Every regular player needs time to change their game branch before the server is opened again.
- Inventory mods. Experimental files can make mods stop working. Make a list of installed mods and be prepared to disable them on a test instance first.
- Check the current release status. Branch names, build numbers, and password requirements can change. Check the Steam Betas interface and SteamDB immediately before updating rather than relying on an old instruction.
Switch a Linux server to the experimental branch
The following is the commonly used Linux SteamCMD command. Replace the installation path if your server is stored elsewhere:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta latest_experimental validate +quitRun it from a shell account that can write to the server’s installation directory. The command asks SteamCMD to log in anonymously, select the dedicated-server app, choose the experimental branch, validate the downloaded files, and exit.
Step-by-step procedure
- Stop the server. Use the service manager, panel stop button, or the same terminal/session that launched the server. Confirm that no server process remains before updating.
- Back up the save and settings. Copy the world and configuration files to your backup location and label the backup with the date and the branch you are leaving.
- Open SteamCMD. Use the SteamCMD installation that owns the server files. A second SteamCMD installation aimed at another directory will update the wrong copy and make it appear that the branch did not change.
- Run the command exactly. The spelling and underscore in
latest_experimentalmatter. The app ID must remain294420. - Wait for SteamCMD to finish. Let file validation complete and look for an update result rather than closing the terminal partway through. If SteamCMD reports an authentication, beta-access, or write error, resolve that error before starting the server.
- Start the server again. Use the normal startup method and allow it to finish loading before inviting players.
- Confirm the result. Compare the displayed build or startup information with the current Steam/SteamDB listing. Check that the server starts with the expected files and that your backup still exists.

To leave the experimental channel, run the same update against the same installation directory but omit the beta selector:

- Run the stable command from the SteamCMD installation that manages this server.
- Allow validation and file replacement to finish.
- Start the server and verify that its build is the public/stable one before players reconnect.
- Have players remove their client beta selection if necessary and update their game through Steam.
Do not leave -beta latest_experimental in a script that is intended to track stable releases. Conversely, adding an unrecognized label such as -beta experimental does not select the documented experimental channel.
Make clients match the server
A server branch change is only usable when the players’ game clients are on the same build. A guide on the dedicated server notes that a client on a different build cannot connect. Plan the client switch as part of the maintenance window, not as a separate optional step.
Client steps in Steam
- Open the Steam library and right-click 7 Days to Die.
- Select Properties, then open the Betas tab.
- Select the branch that corresponds to the server’s current release channel. For an experimental server, that is the experimental option shown by Steam at that time; for a stable server, use the default public option.
- Close the Properties window and let Steam finish downloading the client files.
- Launch the game only after the update completes, then connect to the server.
The exact choices shown in the Betas tab can change as releases move. If a player sees a different list from the administrator, use the branch and build currently published by Steam rather than an old screenshot or an outdated name.

Verify which build is actually installed
Branch selection is not proven merely because SteamCMD accepted a command. Verify the result from more than one place when the server is important.
- SteamCMD output: keep the completion output from the update and validation run. It identifies the application and reports whether files were downloaded or checked.
- Server startup information: start the server after the update and record the version or build it reports. Compare it with the branch you intended to install.
- Steam and SteamDB: use the current entries to check the public build number, experimental availability, and any access-code requirement immediately before maintenance.
- Client connection test: connect with one updated client before announcing that the server is open. A failed connection from an unupdated client is not proof that the server update failed.
Release information that may be out of date quickly

Understand experimental-branch passwords
Older community discussions said that latest_experimental did not require a password, but Steam also provides a field in the Betas tab for private-beta access codes. Some past beta releases were temporarily password-protected. The current requirement is not fixed, so do not assume that a previously password-free branch will always remain so.
If SteamCMD refuses the branch or Steam shows a code field, check the current Steam Betas tab and SteamDB listing for the release you are attempting to use. Do not paste a code from an unrelated beta, and do not treat a server-side password error as a file-corruption problem until access requirements have been checked.

Troubleshoot a branch that will not change
The update completes but the server still reports the old branch
- Confirm that
+force_install_dirpoints to the directory used by the startup script or hosting service. - Check that the server process was stopped before the update; a running process can continue using the old files.
- Review the command for the exact
latest_experimentalspelling and underscore. - Run the command again with
validateand wait for completion. - Start the server from the same directory that SteamCMD updated, then check its startup version again.
The branch option or update is rejected
- Check Steam’s current Betas tab and SteamDB for a renamed, unavailable, or password-protected branch.
- Verify that you are updating app
294420, not the client installation or a different server application. - Read the SteamCMD error before retrying. An access-code failure, a permissions failure, and a network interruption require different fixes.
Files remain unchanged after repeated attempts
Community instructions conflict on the remedy. One guide says a branch switch may require a reinstall; another suggests deleting the steamapps folder and repeating the installation. There is no official confirmation that either action is required for every server. Treat deletion or reinstallation as a last resort:

- Stop the server and make verified copies of the world, configuration, scripts, and any files you need to restore.
- Confirm the installation path and branch name one more time.
- Record the error or unchanged build number so you can restore the original setup if needed.
- Only then follow the hosting provider’s or SteamCMD installation procedure for a clean reinstall. Never delete
steamappswhile your only world backup is inside that directory.
Protect worlds and mods during experimental testing
Experimental builds can change behavior and file formats, and community guidance warns that mods may break. Keep the production world on a separate backup and, where possible, test the branch with a copied world before exposing it to the main player group.
- Use a clearly named backup for the stable branch and another for each experimental test.
- Disable or remove mods that fail during startup instead of repeatedly launching a damaged configuration.
- Tell players that the experimental server may require updated or removed client-side mods as well.
- Keep the stable server files or a documented rollback path available so you can return to the public branch without improvising.
Returning to stable restores the server files, but it does not guarantee that a world changed by an experimental build will be perfectly compatible with every earlier build. That is why the pre-switch world backup is essential.

If a hosting panel manages SteamCMD
Hosting panels often wrap SteamCMD in their own branch selector, while others expose a command or startup variable. The safe principle is the same: the experimental selection must ultimately pass -beta latest_experimental to app 294420, and the stable selection must omit -beta. Panel labels are not authoritative if they do not match the branch currently listed by Steam.
Before changing a panel setting, stop the instance, back up the world and configuration, and identify the panel’s actual installation directory. If the panel offers no branch control, use its documented SteamCMD console or contact the host for the supported procedure rather than editing files while the server is running.

A safe repeatable maintenance workflow
- Announce the window. State whether you are moving to experimental or returning to stable, and tell players which client Betas selection they will need.
- Stop and back up. Capture the world, settings, scripts, and current build information.
- Check live availability. Confirm the branch name, build, and password status in Steam or SteamDB.
- Update one installation. Run the appropriate SteamCMD command against the directory used by the server.
- Validate and start. Wait for SteamCMD to finish, then start the server and inspect its reported version.
- Test privately. Connect with one client on the matching build and check world loading, mods, and essential settings.
- Open to the group. Only after the test succeeds should the rest of the players update and join.
- Record the change. Save the date, branch, build, command, and backup location. That record makes a rollback predictable if the experimental build causes a problem.

These commands assume the Linux path shown. Keep the command structure and branch argument, but substitute the real installation path for your server. The decisive difference is the presence or absence of -beta latest_experimental.
