On desktop Steam, open Steam > Settings (called Preferences on macOS), select Interface, and change Client Beta Participation. Choose Steam Beta Update to join the pre-release client or No beta chosen to return to the stable release, then select Restart Now. Steam Deck and Big Picture Mode use different System-menu paths.
What the two Steam client channels mean
Steam’s client channel controls which desktop client build Steam runs. The stable channel is the current official release. The beta channel is a pre-release channel that exposes newer client features before their normal release. Valve describes opting into Steam Client Beta as a way to use the latest features before they are released.

Valve does not publish a fixed update schedule, download size, reliability percentage, or guaranteed feature list for the beta channel in the support material covering this setting. Treat beta participation as pre-release testing rather than a promise of a particular feature or performance improvement.
Switch the desktop Steam client on Windows, Linux, or macOS
The desktop procedure is the same on Windows and Linux. macOS uses the label Preferences instead of Settings, but the beta control is reached from the same Steam application menu.

Join the Steam beta client
- Start the Steam desktop client and wait for its main window to load.
- Open the application menu in the upper-left corner. Select Steam > Settings. On macOS, select Steam > Preferences.
- In the settings window, open the Interface tab.
- Find Client Beta Participation and open its dropdown menu.
- Select Steam Beta Update.
- Choose Restart Now when Steam prompts you. The selection is not active until Steam restarts.
After the restart, Steam opens using the beta client channel. If the prompt is dismissed rather than accepted, the channel change remains pending until you restart Steam yourself.
Return to the stable Steam client
- Open Steam’s desktop settings again: Steam > Settings, or Steam > Preferences on macOS.
- Select Interface.
- Open Client Beta Participation.
- Choose No beta chosen.
- Select Restart Now and allow Steam to relaunch.
No beta chosen is the opt-out value for the desktop client. It is not the same as leaving the dropdown unchanged if the current value is still Steam Beta Update; make the selection explicitly and restart.
If the Interface tab looks different
Steam’s labels and layouts can vary between client surfaces and releases. If your settings window does not show a tab named Interface, look through the settings pages for the control labeled Client Beta Participation or Beta participation. A separate Valve troubleshooting page places the control at Account > Beta participation > Change, followed by the Steam Beta Update choice. That path may represent a different Steam surface or an older label; the dedicated desktop-client path remains Settings/Preferences > Interface > Client Beta Participation when those labels are present.

Change the Steam client channel on Steam Deck
Steam Deck exposes beta controls through the Deck’s System settings rather than the desktop client’s Interface tab.
- Press the physical Steam button.
- Choose Settings.
- Open System.
- Go to Beta Participation.
- Expand System Update Channel.
- Select Beta and follow the restart prompt.
This is the Steam Deck interface for selecting its beta channel. Do not expect the desktop navigation described above to appear in the Deck’s gaming-mode settings.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Beta Participation.
- Expand Steam Client Update Channel.
- Choose Steam Beta Update to join the beta channel.
- Accept the restart prompt.
To leave the beta in Big Picture Mode, return to the same channel selector and choose the available non-beta or stable option, then restart when prompted. The exact wording can vary with the Big Picture build, so use the channel control under Settings > System > Beta Participation rather than looking for the desktop Interface tab.

How to tell whether the change worked
The restart is the important checkpoint. A selection made in a dropdown does not switch the running client while the old Steam process is still open.
- After choosing Steam Beta Update, restart Steam and reproduce the behavior you wanted to test only after the relaunch.
- After choosing No beta chosen, restart Steam and then check the same beta-participation control again if you are uncertain which value is active.
- If Steam closes and immediately reopens without showing the expected change, return to the control and verify that the selected value was saved before restarting again.
When comparing behavior, record which channel was active and whether the restart completed. Otherwise, a result attributed to beta or stable may actually have been produced by the previous client session.

Use -clearbeta when Steam will not stay on stable
Valve documents -clearbeta as a launch option that opts out of a Steam client public beta and returns Steam to the current official release. It is a software fallback for the client channel, not a hardware repair or a fix for unrelated operating-system problems.
Apply the launch option from a Steam shortcut
- Close Steam completely before launching it with the fallback option.
- Open the properties for the shortcut you use to start Steam.
- Find the shortcut’s Target or equivalent launch-command field.
- Add a space followed by
-clearbetato the existing command. Keep the original executable path intact; the option is appended to it. - Apply the shortcut change and start Steam from that shortcut.
- Once Steam has opened, close the shortcut properties and use the normal settings path to confirm that beta participation is no longer selected.
The exact shortcut-properties wording differs by operating system and desktop environment. The significant part is that -clearbeta is passed as a Steam launch option when the client starts. Remove the option from the shortcut afterward if you do not want it included on every launch.
Troubleshoot switching problems
The beta menu is missing
- Confirm that you are using the Steam desktop client if you are following the Settings > Interface instructions. Steam Deck and Big Picture Mode place their controls under System > Beta Participation.
- Search the settings window for Client Beta Participation or Beta participation if the tab names differ.
- Check the alternate Valve-documented location, Account > Beta participation > Change, when the dedicated Interface path is not shown.
- Restart Steam after changing any value. A missing restart is the most common reason a correctly selected channel appears unchanged.
Steam keeps opening the beta client
- Open the desktop beta-participation control.
- Select No beta chosen, rather than leaving Steam Beta Update selected.
- Accept Restart Now.
- If Steam still reports or behaves as though it is in the beta channel, close it fully and start it with Valve’s
-clearbetalaunch option.
After the fallback launch, check the participation setting again. The launch option is intended to return the client to the current official release; it does not diagnose every problem that may have led you to leave beta.

A problem appears after switching channels
Valve recommends that participants in Steam beta programs test both the beta and normal versions of Steam when troubleshooting an issue. Change the channel, complete the required restart, and reproduce the same steps on the selected channel before drawing a conclusion.
- If the issue occurs only after joining beta, repeat the test after selecting No beta chosen and restarting.
- If it occurs on both channels, switching channels alone does not establish that the client channel is the cause.
- Write down the channel, the exact menu path used, and whether Steam restarted. Those details make a comparison reproducible.
The setting changed but Steam did not restart
Changing the dropdown is only the first part of the procedure. Use Restart Now when offered. If you postponed it, exit Steam and launch it again before testing. A running session can continue using the old client build until the process has relaunched.

Important distinctions between Steam surfaces
The words Steam Beta Update appear in the desktop and Big Picture client-channel controls, while Steam Deck presents Beta inside System Update Channel. These labels describe where to make the choice in each interface; they are not evidence of a single identical menu layout across every Steam device.

Follow the path visible in your current interface, prioritize the dedicated client-beta control, and always complete the restart.
