The right method depends on where the text is. For a new message you are writing, keep the messaging app open and use Gboard’s built-in Translate feature. For a message you have already received or text copied from another app, use Google Translate’s Tap to Translate. If another keyboard is currently active and you simply want to return to Gboard, open the keyboard’s Globe menu and select Gboard. These are separate actions: translating text, changing the active keyboard, and changing Gboard’s typing language are not the same thing.
Choose the correct workflow first
Google Translate is a standalone Android app. Gboard is an Android keyboard that has its own translation command. You do not normally “switch” between them from one shared screen; you choose the tool that matches the text’s location.
| What you are trying to do | Where the source text is | Use this route | What stays open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write a translated outgoing message | You are composing new text in a message field | Gboard Translate | The messaging app and its text field |
| Translate text already in a message | The text has been received, or can be selected and copied | Google Translate Tap to Translate | The messaging app; copy the text, then invoke Translate |
| Make Gboard the active keyboard again | A different keyboard is shown in a text field | The keyboard’s Globe-key switcher | Any app with a text field |
| Type in another language without translating | You are entering text with Gboard | Gboard’s configured languages | Gboard; hold the space bar to change language |
The steps below follow Google’s Android documentation. Menu names and icon placement can vary by phone manufacturer, Android release, Gboard version, and messaging app. Google documents some Gboard translation steps for Android 7.0 and later. If your screen differs, look for the same function under the labels described here rather than assuming the feature is missing.

Use this method when you are creating the message yourself. Gboard translates while you type and places the result into the message field, so you can remain in the conversation instead of switching to the Translate app.

Google describes this capability in its Gboard “Translate as you type” help page. The wording and controls can change slightly with app updates, but the workflow is the same.
Step 1: Open the conversation and focus the text field
- Open your SMS, chat, email, or other messaging app.
- Open the conversation where you want to send the translated text.
- Tap the message-entry field so Gboard appears. If another keyboard opens, use the Globe-key procedure in the section below to select Gboard first.
Step 2: Open Gboard’s feature menu
- On the Gboard toolbar, tap Open features menu. Depending on the layout, this may appear as a four-square or arrow control at the left of the toolbar.
- Tap Translate. This command is part of Gboard; it is not the same as launching the Google Translate app.
Step 3: Set the source and target languages
- Choose the language you will type in under the source-language control.
- Choose the language you want to send under the target-language control.
- Check both selections before typing. The source language tells Gboard how to interpret your input; the target language determines what appears in the message field.
Step 4: Type, inspect, and insert the translation
- Type the message in the language you selected as the source language.
- Watch the translation preview as Gboard processes the text.
- Review the preview for names, numbers, punctuation, tone, and any wording that could be ambiguous.
- Tap the preview or its Select control to place the translated wording in the message field.
- Read the complete outgoing message in the messaging app before tapping its send button.
Gboard’s route is best when the message is new and you want to remain in the text-entry field. It does not turn a received message into a translation automatically; for existing text, use Tap to Translate instead.
Translate a received or copied message with Tap to Translate
Use Tap to Translate when the text already exists in a conversation or another app. You first copy the words, then call Google Translate without manually pasting them into a new translation session. Google states that Tap to Translate works with text, not images.
Set it up from Google’s Translate text in other apps instructions.
Enable Tap to Translate
- Open the Google Translate app.
- Tap the app menu, then choose Settings.
- Tap Tap to Translate and enable the feature.
- On Android 10 and later, follow the additional on-screen instruction to tap Paste when Google requests that permission or confirmation.
- On Pixel 6 and later, Google documents an optional floating icon. Enable it only if you want a persistent shortcut; its availability and appearance depend on the device and software version.
Enabling the feature is a one-time setup on the device. You still need to select and copy the text you want translated each time.
Translate copied text from the messaging app
- Return to the messaging app and open the message containing the text.
- Touch and hold the text, adjust the selection handles if necessary, and tap Copy. The exact selection controls belong to the messaging app and can differ between apps.
- Tap the Google Translate icon or Tap to Translate control that appears after copying.
- Choose the language you want as the translation target, if it is not already selected.
- Read the result in the Translate panel or overlay.
This path is useful when you are reading an incoming message and do not need to compose in the translated language. It also works for text copied from a browser, notes app, or another text-based application. It does not translate a screenshot or photograph through Tap to Translate; image translation is a different Google Translate function and is outside this switching procedure.
Switch the active keyboard back to Gboard
If the problem is that a different keyboard is currently displayed, translation settings are not the solution. Android lets you choose the active keyboard from the Globe key while any keyboard is open.

Google documents this recovery path in Fix problems with Gboard.
- Open any app with a text field, such as your messaging app, and tap the field to display the keyboard.
- Touch and hold the Globe key at the bottom of the keyboard. On some layouts the Globe key may be near the space bar.
- When the keyboard list appears, tap Gboard.
- Return to the message field. Gboard should now be the active keyboard, allowing you to open its features menu and choose Translate.
This changes the keyboard provider only. It does not change the language pair in Gboard Translate, enable Tap to Translate, or translate text that is already on screen. Those are separate settings and workflows.
Change Gboard’s typing language instead of changing keyboards
Many people say they want to “switch languages” when they actually want to keep Gboard active and change the language used for ordinary typing. That is different from both Google Translate and the Android keyboard switcher.
To move among languages already configured in Gboard:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open a text field so Gboard appears.
- Touch and hold the space bar.
- Select the configured language you want to use.
To add a language or keyboard layout, follow Google’s Type in a different language instructions:
- With Gboard open, open Gboard settings.
- Tap Languages.
- Tap Add keyboard.
- Select the language and the layout you want.
- Tap Done.
Changing the Gboard typing language affects input and suggestions. It does not automatically translate an outgoing message. For a translation, open Gboard’s feature menu and choose Translate, then set the source and target languages.
How to decide between the two translation routes
You are writing an outgoing message
Use Gboard Translate when the words originate with you and you want the translated result inserted directly into the message field. You can continue editing in the messaging app before sending. This avoids copying the draft to a separate app and then bringing the result back.

Use Tap to Translate when the words are already in the conversation. Select and copy the text, then tap the Translate control. This is the route designed for text that another app is displaying.

First verify that Gboard is the active keyboard. Open a text field, hold the Globe key, and choose Gboard. Once Gboard is visible, open its features menu; the Translate command is located there rather than in Android’s general keyboard picker.
You can translate but the wrong language is used
Check the source and target selectors inside Gboard Translate, or the target-language selector in Tap to Translate. A typing-language change made with the space bar does not necessarily change the translation language pair.
Version and interface differences to expect
- Android version: Google’s Gboard help identifies Android 7.0 and later for some translation steps. Older Android releases may not present the same controls.
- Android 10 and later: Tap to Translate setup includes a Paste step in Google’s instructions.
- Pixel 6 and later: Google documents an optional floating Tap to Translate icon. It is not required for the copy-and-translate workflow.
- Device and app updates: Toolbar icons, menu positions, and wording can change. Look for Open features menu, Translate, Settings, Tap to Translate, Languages, and Add keyboard, even if the surrounding design differs.
- Messaging app behavior: The way you select and copy text is controlled by the messaging app. Some apps may restrict selection, provide a different context menu, or display formatted content that cannot be copied as ordinary text.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Gboard is not listed in the Globe menu
Confirm that Gboard is installed and enabled in the device’s keyboard settings. Then reopen a text field and hold the Globe key again. If the phone’s keyboard switcher shows Gboard but it does not remain selected, choose it once more while the text field is active.
The Translate option is missing from Gboard
Make sure the visible keyboard is actually Gboard, not another keyboard with a similar toolbar. Open the feature menu rather than the Android keyboard list. If Gboard is active and the command is still absent, the phone may be running an older Gboard or Android version whose interface does not match Google’s current help steps.

Tap to Translate does nothing after copying
Open Google Translate and verify that Tap to Translate is enabled in Settings. Copy plain text again and look for the Translate icon or control. The documented feature applies to text; copying an image, screenshot, or other non-text content will not produce the same result.
The copied text is translated in the wrong direction
Open the language selector in the Tap to Translate panel and set the intended target language. If the source language is detected incorrectly, choose the source language explicitly when that control is available, then review the result.

The keyboard changes language but does not translate
Holding the space bar only switches among Gboard languages you have configured. Open the features menu and select Translate for an actual translation, then choose the source and target languages.
The translated message sounds wrong
Neither workflow removes the need to review the output. Check names, dates, quantities, addresses, idioms, and formal or informal wording before sending. For a new draft, inspect Gboard’s preview before inserting it. For copied text, compare the result with the original message and ask the sender for clarification when the meaning is uncertain.

Examples of the right choice
Imagine you want to send “I will arrive after six” in another language. Open the conversation, activate Gboard, choose Open features menu and Translate, select the source and target languages, and type the sentence. Review the preview, insert it, and then send it from the conversation. There is no need to open Google Translate separately.
Now imagine that a contact sends you a paragraph in a language you do not read. Tap and hold the paragraph, select the relevant text, and tap Copy. Tap to Translate can show the result while you remain in the messaging app. This is a reading workflow, not a way to replace the original message or automatically reply.
If a phone has opened a different keyboard before either example, the first step is not translation setup. Hold the Globe key and select Gboard. Only after Gboard is active will its toolbar and Translate command be available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Checks before you send or rely on a translation
- Confirm that the source language matches what you are typing or what you copied.
- Confirm the target language separately; changing Gboard’s ordinary typing language does not set the translation target.
- Read the entire translated message in the messaging app, not only the short preview.
- Verify proper names, numbers, dates, addresses, quantities, and punctuation.
- Consider tone. A literal result may not express the intended level of formality or urgency.
- For an incoming message, keep the original visible so you can compare it with the translated panel.
- If the app will not let you select text, Tap to Translate cannot use that content through the documented copy workflow. Try selecting a smaller text portion or use the app’s own text-copy command.
A quick procedure you can save
- New message: Messaging app → tap text field → Gboard Open features menu → Translate → choose source and target → type → review preview → tap preview or Select to insert.
- Existing message: Google Translate → Settings → Tap to Translate → enable; then select and copy message text → tap Translate icon → choose target language → read result.
- Return to Gboard: Open a text field → hold Globe → tap Gboard.
- Change Gboard typing language: Hold the space bar and choose a configured language; add one through Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard → select layout → Done.
Keeping these four actions separate prevents the most common confusion: Gboard Translate is for composing, Tap to Translate is for copied text, the Globe menu selects the keyboard, and the space bar changes Gboard’s typing language.
