Sign in to Gemini, open the model control at the bottom of the prompt box, and choose Gemini Flash-Lite, Flash, or Pro. Use Flash-Lite for fast everyday work, Flash for a broad mix of speed and reasoning, and Pro for difficult coding, mathematics, or multimodal analysis when your account offers it. Gemini can also choose a model automatically, but manual selection is better when a specific capability, response time, or usage budget matters.
What switching models changes
A Gemini conversation can run on different model families with different priorities. The picker changes the model used for new prompts in the current chat. It does not turn a short request into a guaranteed expert answer, and Google’s descriptions are capability and positioning statements rather than independent accuracy benchmarks.
Model choice mainly affects four practical dimensions:
- Response time: speed-focused models generally return routine answers sooner.
- Reasoning and capability: more advanced models are intended for harder analysis, coding, mathematics, and multimodal work.
- Usage consumption: advanced models and higher thinking levels use more of an account’s allowance.
- Availability: the models and thinking levels shown depend on your account, plan, region, and Google’s current product configuration.
Changing models is useful when the job changes. A quick rewrite does not need the same choice as debugging a large codebase, and using Pro for every small prompt can consume an allowance without improving the result enough to justify the trade-off.

How to switch models on the web or a computer
Google’s computer instructions require you to be signed in before you can switch models. The control appears in or beneath the Gemini prompt box.
- Open
gemini.google.comand sign in to the Google account whose plan and usage limits you want to use. - Start a new chat or open an existing conversation.
- At the bottom of the chat box, click the displayed model name.
- Select the model you want from the list. The available choices can differ from another account because access is plan- and account-dependent.
- Enter your prompt. Gemini keeps the selected model for the conversation until you change it again or the service applies a different setting.
If automatic selection is enabled, Gemini may route a prompt to a model and thinking level for you. To choose a specific model, turn automatic selection off or use the model picker when the interface offers the manual choices.
Check which model answered
After a response, open its response details where available. The details view can show the model that handled the prompt, which is useful when automatic selection is on or when you need to document how an answer was produced.

- Open Gemini settings.
- Go to Usage limits.
- Find the automatic model-selection control and switch it on or off.
- Return to the chat and confirm that the model control now reflects the selection mode you intend to use.
Labels and menu placement can change. If the control is not visible, verify that you are signed in, reload the page, and check the current Usage limits settings.
How to switch models on Android
On Android, Google documents model selection in the Gemini app and at gemini.google.com. Manual switching in Chat Mode and Task Mode requires an eligible Google AI plan, and a lock icon indicates a model that your account cannot currently use.
- Open the Gemini app or visit
gemini.google.comon your Android device. - Open a conversation or begin a new one.
- Tap the selected model at the bottom of the chat box.
- Tap the model you want to use.
- If the interface offers a thinking setting, choose Low, Medium, or High. If you do not choose one, the documented default is Low.
- Send your prompt and inspect response details if you need to verify the model used.
Android retains the selected model and thinking level in the current conversation, including when you return to that conversation later. This makes it practical to keep a demanding project on one configuration while using a separate chat for quick questions.

View Android usage and automatic selection
- Open the Gemini menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Usage limits.
- Review the available models, remaining allowance information, and automatic-selection setting shown for your account.
The exact iPhone interface is not established by the documented computer and Android instructions. Do not assume that the Android tap sequence or plan behavior is identical on iOS; use the controls displayed in your iOS app and its current help documentation.

The following comparison reflects Google’s published descriptions. It is not a controlled performance test, so no model should be treated as universally more accurate.

Choose by task instead of by model prestige
Use Flash-Lite for speed and repetition
Choose Flash-Lite when the task is well defined and the cost of a less elaborate reasoning path is low. Examples include turning meeting notes into bullets, producing several headline variations, extracting fields from a short document, generating a first-pass outline, or brainstorming names and angles. It is also a sensible default for high-volume prompts where waiting for a deeper pass would slow the workflow.
Give the model a tight format, word limit, and source text. A precise prompt reduces the need for follow-up and lets the speed advantage matter.
Use Flash for a dependable general balance
Flash is the practical middle choice when a request needs interpretation, synthesis, or several steps but does not justify the longest reasoning path. It fits tasks such as comparing options, drafting a procedure, explaining a technical concept to a non-specialist, transforming a long note into a structured report, or reviewing code for common issues.
When you are unsure which model to pick, Flash is a reasonable starting point: escalate to Pro if the task exposes ambiguity, difficult edge cases, or a need to work across multiple files and media types.

Use Pro for high-complexity and multimodal work
Pro is intended for complex mathematics, demanding coding, and deeper understanding across text, files, images, and video. Use it when an incorrect assumption is expensive, the problem has interacting constraints, or the answer must connect evidence from several kinds of input.
Expect longer waits, especially with Gemini 3 Pro prompts. More capable does not mean infallible: verify calculations, test generated code, and check citations or extracted facts against the source material.
Use automatic selection for mixed, low-friction work
Automatic selection is useful when your day includes many unrelated prompts and you do not want to change the picker repeatedly. Gemini can route a prompt to an efficient model and thinking level. The trade-off is predictability: two prompts that look similar to you may be handled differently, and you may need response details to identify the model.
Choose the thinking level on Android
When the Android interface exposes thinking levels, the available choices are Low, Medium, and High. Use the lowest level that gives the task enough deliberation:
- Low: quick answers, transformations, and routine drafting.
- Medium: multi-step explanations, comparisons, and code review where some deliberate checking helps.
- High: difficult reasoning, complex mathematics, or intricate planning where additional deliberation is worth the time and usage.
If you omit the setting, Google’s documented default is Low. Higher levels consume more usage, so selecting High for every request can reduce how many demanding prompts your account can handle.
Plan access, context windows, and usage limits
Model availability is not identical for every account. A locked model in the picker means that the required plan or entitlement is missing, not that the app is malfunctioning. Sign-in status, account type, region, and Google’s current rollout can all affect what appears.

Google’s limits page captured the following context-window configuration on October 13, 2026. These figures are changeable product settings, not permanent guarantees:

A context window is the amount of material the service can consider in one interaction under the applicable configuration. It is not a promise that every response will be equally detailed, nor does it guarantee unlimited messages. Google also states that advanced models and higher thinking levels consume more usage. Before planning a large upload or a long coding session, open your own Usage limits view and rely on the allowance displayed there rather than a universal number.
A practical model-selection workflow
- Classify the job. Decide whether it is a quick transformation, a general analysis, or a high-stakes multi-step problem.
- Estimate input complexity. Count the files, pages, images, video, code dependencies, and constraints the answer must connect.
- Start with the lightest suitable model. Use Flash-Lite for routine work, Flash for mixed work, and Pro when complexity or multimodal depth demands it.
- Set the thinking level only as high as needed. On Android, reserve Medium or High for prompts that benefit from deliberate reasoning.
- Check the first result. Look for unsupported assumptions, missed requirements, calculation errors, or an unsuitable format.
- Escalate deliberately. Move to Flash or Pro, increase the thinking level, or split the task when the first model cannot satisfy the requirements.
- Verify the output. Test code, recompute important numbers, and compare extracted facts with the original files.
Examples of good choices
Summarizing a short meeting transcript
Flash-Lite is usually appropriate. Specify the required headings, action-item format, and maximum length. There is little benefit in spending a higher allowance on a simple transformation.
Comparing two software designs
Start with Flash if the designs and criteria are clearly stated. Move to Pro when the comparison spans many files, performance constraints, security implications, or diagrams that must be interpreted together.
Debugging a small script
Flash can explain a straightforward error and suggest a patch. Pro is more suitable when the bug depends on several modules, asynchronous behavior, or a large repository context. Run the proposed fix in a controlled environment instead of assuming the generated code works.
Solving advanced mathematics
Use Pro when the problem has several proof or calculation steps. Ask for intermediate reasoning or a checkable derivation, then verify the result independently. A more advanced model can still make an arithmetic or assumption error.

Reviewing a combination of text, images, and video
Pro is the documented choice for deeper understanding across these input types, provided your account exposes it and your usage allowance supports the session. State exactly what evidence to extract from each medium and how conflicts should be handled.
Troubleshooting model switching
The model picker is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in; switching requires sign-in.
- Check whether automatic selection is active under Settings > Usage limits.
- Reload Gemini or start a new conversation if the current chat has a stale interface.
- Check the live help and Usage limits pages because controls can move during product updates.
A model is shown with a lock
The account is not currently eligible for that model or thinking level. Review the plan attached to the signed-in account and the eligibility information in Usage limits. Do not treat a locked entry as a temporary browser error unless the account page confirms access.
The response is slower than expected
Pro and higher thinking levels can take longer, and Google specifically cautions that Gemini 3 Pro prompts generally take longer than other models. Switch to Flash for a less demanding task, lower the thinking level on Android, reduce unnecessary input, or accept the longer wait when the extra depth is important.

Open the response details for that answer. If details are unavailable, turn off automatic selection and manually choose a model for subsequent prompts so the configuration is explicit.
The conversation behaves differently after returning to it
On Android, the selected model and thinking level are documented as persistent within the current conversation. If the setting has changed, check that you reopened the same conversation and that the account or app has not changed. On the web, recheck the current picker before sending a new prompt.
Rules for reliable results after switching
- Tell Gemini the goal, audience, constraints, output format, and source of truth.
- Keep a demanding project in a dedicated conversation so its selected model and context remain relevant.
- Split unrelated jobs instead of filling one chat with conflicting instructions.
- Use a cheaper or faster model for drafting, then escalate only the sections that require deeper analysis.
- Do not infer accuracy from the model name alone; validate important output.
- Monitor Usage limits during long sessions, especially when using Pro or High thinking.
Product labels, routing behavior, plan access, context windows, and allowances can change. Before relying on a specific model for a deadline-critical workflow, confirm the choices and limits displayed in your own Gemini account.
