Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the laptop panel if necessary, and choose 60 Hz or 120 Hz under Choose a refresh rate. Windows only shows modes supported by the selected display and its current configuration, so 120 Hz cannot be enabled on a 60 Hz-only panel by changing a setting.
What 60Hz and 120Hz mean
Refresh rate is the number of times a display redraws its image each second. A 60 Hz panel updates 60 times per second; a 120 Hz panel updates twice as often. The higher rate can make scrolling, pointer movement, window animations, pen input and supported games appear smoother and feel more responsive.
The setting does not increase a game’s frame rate by itself. The GPU, game settings, workload, panel response time and the application’s own behavior still determine how much improvement you can see. A game rendering at 45 frames per second cannot display 120 unique frames per second simply because Windows is set to 120 Hz.

Sixty hertz generally uses less display power, which can help when the laptop is running on battery. One universal battery-saving percentage cannot be quoted because the result depends on the panel, brightness, graphics hardware, workload and power profile.

Switch the laptop display from 60Hz to 120Hz
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Open System and choose Display.
- Scroll to Related settings and open Advanced display.
- If more than one screen is connected, use the display selector to choose the laptop’s built-in panel. Changing the rate while another monitor is selected changes that monitor instead.
- Under Choose a refresh rate, open the menu and select 120 Hz. Choose 60 Hz instead when you want to reduce display power use or when 120 Hz is not appropriate for the current workload.
- Accept the confirmation prompt if Windows asks whether to keep the change. If you do not confirm, Windows may revert to the previous mode.
- Remain on the Advanced display page and check the reported resolution and refresh rate. Confirm that the intended panel is still selected and that the resolution is the one you expect.
Microsoft describes the control simply: select the rate you want next to Choose a refresh rate. The available entries are determined by the display and the active configuration, not by a universal Windows list.
Check whether changing to 120Hz also changed resolution
Windows can associate a refresh rate with a particular resolution. In the refresh-rate menu, an asterisk identifies a rate that does not support the current resolution. Selecting that entry may change the resolution so the display can operate at the chosen rate.
After applying 120 Hz, return to Settings > System > Display and inspect Display resolution. If the resolution is lower than intended, select a different combination of resolution and refresh rate that the panel supports. Do not assume that every advertised 120 Hz mode is available at the panel’s native resolution.

Why 120Hz may be missing
The built-in panel is only 60Hz
A 60 Hz-only laptop panel cannot be converted to 120 Hz through Windows. Refresh-rate entries describe hardware modes exposed by the panel and graphics path. If the manufacturer specifies a maximum of 60 Hz, the missing 120 Hz option is expected rather than a software fault.
The wrong display is selected
With an external monitor, Windows may be showing the capabilities of that monitor instead of the laptop screen. Select each display in Advanced display and check the reported refresh-rate list separately.
The current resolution does not expose 120Hz
Some displays offer 120 Hz only at certain resolutions. Check the refresh-rate menu for an asterisk and test the resolution combinations listed by Windows. If switching to a compatible resolution makes 120 Hz appear, the limitation is the display mode rather than the Windows control itself.

The graphics connection does not carry the mode
For an external display, the monitor specification, cable, adapter, dock, GPU output and driver path all matter. A monitor may support 120 Hz in isolation while a particular adapter or connection exposes only lower modes. These details are model-specific, so check the documentation for every part of the connection rather than treating the Windows setting as proof that the hardware supports 120 Hz.
The driver or firmware is not exposing the advertised mode
If the laptop specification says its internal panel supports 120 Hz but Windows never lists it, install the display and graphics drivers supplied for that laptop model, restart, and check Advanced display again. If the mode remains absent, compare the manufacturer’s documented panel and resolution combinations with the mode Windows reports. Do not force an unsupported mode: it can produce a blank screen or an automatic rollback.
Compare 60Hz, 120Hz and Dynamic Refresh Rate

Enable Dynamic Refresh Rate in Windows 11
DRR is an automatic policy rather than a separate high-performance mode. It requires a display that supports variable refresh rate and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the compatible laptop display if multiple screens are connected.
- Find Dynamic refresh rate and turn the toggle on when Windows offers it.
- Use the laptop normally, then check game behavior individually. DRR may reduce the maximum refresh rate of a game that is not designed for variable refresh rate.
- If a favorite game appears to run slower with DRR enabled, return to the same page and turn DRR off, then test the game again.
Windows 10 does not include DRR. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 laptop should not be expected to show the Windows 11 Dynamic refresh rate control.
Choosing the right setting
Use 120Hz when smoothness is the priority
- You are scrolling, drawing, moving windows or playing a game where smoother motion is noticeable.
- The laptop is plugged in, or the additional display power is acceptable on battery.
- The panel exposes 120 Hz at the resolution you want.
Use 60Hz when battery life is the priority
- You are reading, writing, browsing static pages or working in documents for long periods away from a charger.
- The difference in motion smoothness is less important than reducing display power use.
- The laptop’s panel or current connection does not support 120 Hz reliably.
Use DRR when you want Windows to balance both
- The laptop runs Windows 11.
- The display supports variable refresh rate and is rated for at least 120 Hz.
- You are willing to disable DRR for individual games if their performance is capped unexpectedly.
These are practical trade-offs, not universal performance guarantees. Brightness, GPU load, frame rate, response time and the application’s rendering method can outweigh the refresh-rate setting in perceived smoothness or battery use.

Multiple-monitor issues
Set the rate for the intended display before changing it. Laptop and external monitors can run at different rates, but Microsoft warns that mixed refresh rates can cause video playback to stall or repeatedly start and stop.

If video playback shows that symptom after connecting another monitor, open Advanced display, note the rate assigned to each screen, try matching the monitors’ refresh rates, and retest the video. If matching rates fixes playback, the mixed-rate configuration was the trigger; if it does not, restore the rates that suit each display and investigate the playback application or connection separately.
Common problems and recovery steps
The screen goes blank after selecting 120Hz
Wait for Windows’ confirmation period to expire so it can revert automatically. If the display returns, choose a mode that the panel and connection explicitly support, often 60 Hz or a lower resolution at 120 Hz. For an external monitor, reconnect it directly instead of through a dock or adapter while testing.
The selected rate keeps reverting
Reopen Advanced display and verify that the correct screen is selected. A rate that is not supported at the current resolution may be rejected or reverted. Select a supported resolution-and-rate combination, apply it, and confirm the prompt before it times out.

Check the application’s frame rate and the GPU load. A 120 Hz setting cannot compensate for a game rendering at a much lower frame rate, a slow panel response time or heavy system load. Test ordinary desktop scrolling as well as the game to separate a Windows mode issue from an application-performance issue.
Battery drains faster after switching
Return to 60 Hz while on battery, or use DRR on a compatible Windows 11 system. There is no fixed battery percentage that applies to every laptop, so compare runtime under your own workload rather than relying on a universal estimate.
A favorite game is slower with DRR
Turn off Dynamic refresh rate in Advanced display and test the game at a fixed rate. Microsoft specifically identifies non-variable-refresh-rate games as a case where DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate.
