Switching AI providers is a migration project, not an account-transfer button. To avoid losing useful work, preserve an untouched export, create a portable summary of your preferences and projects, inventory files and integrations, rebuild provider-specific features, and test the replacement while the original account still works.
Exports can preserve conversation content, but they rarely recreate the old product exactly. Chats, memories, uploaded files, custom assistants, account settings, subscriptions, workspace permissions, API state and automations are separate assets. Treat each one as something to export, recreate, reconnect or verify.
What actually moves when you change AI providers?
A provider account contains several kinds of data that are managed differently:

- Durable context: response preferences, terminology, project background and recurring constraints that an assistant may have stored as memory.
- Files and outputs: uploaded documents, images, generated media, code, prompts and final deliverables.
- Product configuration: custom assistants, projects, system instructions, settings, subscriptions and workspace membership.
- Workflow state: API keys, endpoint configuration, conversation identifiers, tool definitions, external database references, schedules, queues and unfinished tasks.
An export is therefore a backup, not a promise of a seamless move. OpenAI describes its personal ChatGPT transfer method as uploading exported conversation data into a new chat for reference; it does not recreate every former chat or transfer all account features. Anthropic states that exported Claude data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Gemini documents separate procedures for importing memory and chat history.

Before you begin, decide what “without losing” means for your work. You may need searchable historical records, a working set of current projects, equivalent automations, or simply a reliable archive for compliance. Those goals require different migration steps.
Build an inventory before requesting an export
Start with a list of everything you depend on. Do not rely on the provider’s sidebar as your only record; an item that appears in the interface may not be included in the downloadable archive.
Record these assets
- Important conversations and the names or subjects that let you find them.
- Reusable prompts, templates, system instructions and response-format requirements.
- Memory entries, personal preferences, project terminology and standing constraints.
- Uploaded reference files, spreadsheets, images, datasets and generated outputs.
- Custom assistants, agents, projects, knowledge bases and connected applications.
- API keys, model names, endpoints, webhooks, tool or function schemas and environment variables.
- Scheduled jobs, automations, approval steps, notification destinations and retry rules.
- Application-owned state: conversation IDs, tool results, external database links and outstanding task status.
For every item, assign one action:

Keep a copy of the inventory outside the AI service. A spreadsheet or plain-text checklist is sufficient and remains available if an account is locked during the change.
Export the source account and preserve an untouched backup
Use the source provider’s current export control, then download the archive from the account that requested it. Store one untouched copy in an access-controlled location before editing, splitting or uploading anything. Open the archive and check that it contains the expected files; a successful download is not proof that the export is complete.
ChatGPT personal exports
OpenAI’s documented transfer process uses a ZIP archive containing conversations.json or numbered conversation JSON files. If the archive is too large for a single upload, the instructions allow splitting it or selecting only the files you need. Keep the original ZIP and work from a duplicate.
The destination procedure is to extract the archive, locate the conversation JSON, start a new chat in the destination personal account and upload the file for reference. It is not an account merge. The transferred material does not recreate each old chat in the sidebar, restore account settings, move memories, GPTs, uploaded files, subscriptions or workspace membership. The cited guidance also does not provide this settings-based export path for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise accounts.
Claude exports
Individual Free, Pro and Max users can request an export from Settings > Privacy on the Claude web app or Claude Desktop. Claude mobile apps cannot initiate the export. Anthropic sends the download link by email, and that link expires 24 hours after delivery, so download it promptly and make a second secured copy.

Anthropic says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. If your destination is a Team or Enterprise organization, follow that organization’s migration route and ownership rules instead of assuming a personal export will import. For Team or Enterprise, Anthropic identifies the organization’s Primary Owner as the person who handles exports.
Gemini exports and eligibility
Gemini Apps documents a personal Google Account requirement and an age requirement of 18 or older for the described import process. The same guidance lists the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as exclusions. Confirm that your account and region qualify before preparing a large archive.
Gemini’s history importer accepts ZIP files up to 5 GB each and permits up to five ZIP uploads per day. Processing may take up to a day. A re-upload adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones; an interrupted import can be partial, in which case the documented recovery is to delete the partial import and retry.
Create a portable context brief
Raw conversation history is a poor substitute for durable context. Create a separate, concise document that a different provider can use immediately.

What to include
- Your preferred answer length, tone, formatting and level of technical detail.
- Definitions for specialized terms, acronyms and internal names.
- Active projects, their goals, status, constraints and next decisions.
- Recurring requirements such as file formats, coding standards or review steps.
- Links, filenames, database identifiers and other references needed to resume work.
- A list of prompts or instructions that must be applied consistently.
You can ask the source assistant to draft this brief, but review every line yourself. Remove secrets, personal information and obsolete assumptions. Keep the brief separate from the raw export so it can be pasted into a system that has no history-import feature.
Importing memory separately
Gemini describes a separate memory-import flow: copy its suggested prompt into the source AI, review and copy the resulting summary, then paste that summary into Gemini’s import settings. This is different from importing chat history. A history archive does not automatically become editable memory, and a memory summary does not preserve the full conversation record.
Use the destination’s supported import path
Moving conversations into a ChatGPT personal account
- Request and download the source export.
- Extract the ZIP and find
conversations.jsonor the numbered conversation JSON files. - Sign in to the destination personal account and open a new chat.
- Upload the JSON file for reference, splitting it or choosing selected files if size limits require that.
- Ask the destination assistant to locate a representative conversation and confirm that the content is readable.
This creates a reference conversation, not a set of restored chats. Recreate memories, custom assistants, projects, files and settings separately.

Moving away from or into a personal Claude account
Use Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop to request the export. Because Anthropic does not support importing exported data into another personal Claude account, use the export as an archive and migrate active work through your context brief, manually uploaded files and rebuilt prompts. Organization migrations require the relevant Team or Enterprise process.

Importing chat history into Gemini Apps
- Confirm that the Google Account, age and region meet the documented eligibility rules.
- Prepare ZIP archives no larger than 5 GB each.
- Upload no more than five ZIP files in a day.
- Wait for processing, which may take up to a day.
- Check several old conversations for names, messages and expected content.
- If an import stops partway, delete the partial result and retry rather than layering another uncertain copy over it.
Import memory through Gemini’s separate memory settings. Do not expect project files, attachments or generated images to arrive with the chat-history archive.
Rebuild files, assistants and connected workflows
Provider imports generally focus on conversation records. Reconstruct the working environment around each important task.
Restore the knowledge a workflow needs
Upload the source files again to the destination project or conversation. Gemini’s documented chat-history import excludes project files and generated images. OpenAI’s personal conversation transfer likewise does not move files, memories, GPTs or settings. Keep canonical documents in your own controlled storage so a future provider change does not depend on a proprietary attachment library.
Recreate instructions and tools
- Copy the system prompt, reusable instructions and output schema into a version-controlled document.
- Recreate the assistant, project or agent at the destination.
- Re-enter tool and function definitions, including required parameters and error responses.
- Reconnect applications and reauthorize each integration.
- Store new credentials in a secret manager or environment variables rather than in a chat.
- Run a test with a non-sensitive sample before granting access to production data.
For API-based applications, preserve the state your own software owns: conversation identifiers, tool results, external database references, queue positions and unfinished-task status. Provider-managed history is not the same as application state. Gemini’s Interactions API, for example, can continue a history by passing a previous interaction ID, but tools and system instructions are scoped to the interaction and may need to be supplied again.
Rebuild schedules and human review
Document the trigger, input source, model request, tool calls, approval gate, output destination, retry behavior and alerting for every automation. Recreate those components one at a time. A chat archive cannot recreate a scheduler, webhook, database write or human approval rule unless your own application stored and restores that configuration.
Review privacy, retention and administration before uploading
An export can contain sensitive prompts, personal information, customer records and confidential files. Read the destination account or organization policy before uploading it, and remove material that is not needed for the move.

Gemini consumer activity
Google’s Gemini guidance says imported and continued chats are saved in Activity and used to improve services, including training generative AI models. Review the available Activity controls and deletion options, and apply your organization’s data-handling rules before importing confidential material.
API retention is a separate question
Do not apply an API retention statement to a consumer chat product, or vice versa. OpenAI’s developer documentation says API abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts and responses and are retained by default for up to 30 days, subject to exceptions and eligible controls. Those controls may require eligibility and approval. Check the policy for the exact API account and region you will use.

Confirm who can export, who owns imported data, how access is granted and what happens when a member leaves. An administrator may need to approve an export or destination workspace. Do not begin an irreversible organization merge until ownership and retention requirements are documented.
Test the destination before canceling the source
Run a staged acceptance test while the original account remains available. Use representative but non-sensitive examples first, then test production-like cases after permissions and privacy controls are confirmed.
Minimum verification checklist
- The untouched archive opens and can be searched.
- Several important conversations are discoverable at the destination.
- Your context brief produces the expected tone, terminology and constraints.
- Required files are present and readable.
- Tools receive the right parameters and return usable results.
- Output formatting, citations, structured data and error handling match your application requirements.
- Schedules, notifications, approvals and retries behave as intended.
- Human reviewers know where to find the new workflow and its rollback procedure.
Compare results rather than judging only whether a prompt returns an answer. A provider switch can fail through a missing file, changed tool schema, lost database reference, different timeout or absent approval step even when the final text looks plausible.

The archive downloaded but appears empty
Confirm that you downloaded it from the account that requested the export, extract it locally and inspect the file list. If expected conversations are absent, request a new export or contact the provider before deleting the source account.

That is the documented behavior of the personal ChatGPT transfer method. Use the archive as a searchable reference and recreate active projects manually; it is not a sidebar restoration.

Claude data cannot be imported
This is an explicit product limitation for personal Claude accounts. Retain the export as an archive, move durable context through your brief, upload required files again and rebuild prompts and integrations at the destination.
Gemini import is incomplete
Check the 5 GB per-file limit and five-upload daily allowance. If the process was interrupted, delete the partial import and retry. Allow up to a day for processing before concluding that the operation failed.
Files or images are missing
Check your inventory rather than assuming the archive is defective. Gemini excludes project files and generated images from its chat-history import, and the ChatGPT personal transfer does not move files. Upload canonical copies directly to the destination.
The new workflow answers but no longer performs actions
Inspect integrations, credentials, tool definitions, endpoint URLs and application-owned state. Reauthorize connections and resupply system instructions and tools for each interaction where the destination scopes them locally.
Compare destinations before committing
Evaluate a provider against the work you actually need to move, not just its chat interface.

Design for the next provider switch
After the migration, reduce future lock-in. Keep prompts, system instructions, tool schemas, file manifests and workflow definitions in version control. Store important outputs and metadata in your own repository. Give conversations stable project names and maintain a small context brief that you update when a project changes.
Separate provider calls from application logic. Your software should own task status, identifiers, retries, approvals and external references; the model should supply a replaceable reasoning or generation step. Use an adapter for each provider’s API and write tests that check tool calls, structured output and failure handling. This turns a future switch into a controlled configuration change instead of an emergency data rescue.
