You can switch AI providers without starting from zero, but there is no dependable one-click account migration. Treat the change as a staged transfer: export the old account, build a portable library of prompts and context, recreate supported features, test real tasks and permissions, and keep the old account until the replacement works. A conversation archive preserves records; it does not recreate your sidebar, memories, custom bots, files, integrations, subscriptions, or workspace access.
What transfers—and what does not
AI services store several different kinds of information behind one account. A downloaded archive is only one part of that information, so plan each component separately.
| Component | What an export usually provides | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation history | A file or archive containing past chats and account data | Download, open, and verify important conversations before relying on it |
| Reusable prompts | Often embedded in chats, not presented as a portable prompt library | Copy the exact wording into organized documents, with examples of good outputs |
| Custom instructions and preferences | May be included in account data, but destination services use different fields | Save a clean, editable copy and map each preference to the destination’s settings |
| Persistent memory | May be represented in account data or separate memory controls | Export or copy entries, then review every imported entry for accuracy |
| Projects and reference files | Files may be present in an archive, but folder structure and retrieval behavior may not be | Recreate projects, upload only needed files, and test retrieval with known questions |
| Custom bots, GPTs, or agents | Definitions may be exportable in some products | Rebuild instructions, files, tools, sharing, and permissions as separate tasks |
| Apps, actions, and integrations | Connection metadata may not include usable authorizations | Re-authorize each integration and check exactly what data it can access |
| Subscriptions and workspace membership | Not recreated by a conversation export | Set up billing, seats, domains, and workspace access independently |
OpenAI states that uploading exported conversations into another personal ChatGPT conversation “is not a full account migration.” It does not restore separate chats, the old sidebar, settings, memories, GPTs, files, subscriptions, or workspace access. See OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions for the current limitation.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you transfer ChatGPT conversations to Claude?
There is no documented cross-provider operation that turns a ChatGPT archive into a fully reconstructed Claude account. The practical route is to export ChatGPT, extract the conversations or decisions you still need, and create a portable prompt-and-context library. You can then paste selected context into Claude projects or conversations and rebuild equivalent instructions manually.

Claude’s own personal export is also an archive rather than an import mechanism: Anthropic says individual Claude exports cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. That means an account-to-account move inside Claude still requires copying the useful material and recreating settings. Team and Enterprise accounts follow organization-owner rules, so an administrator should confirm the applicable policy before any departure.
Inventory everything before changing accounts
Start with an inventory, not an export button. Record what you rely on and how important each item is. This prevents a common failure mode: discovering after closure that a crucial instruction existed only in an old chat.
Capture reusable behavior
- Global response preferences and custom instructions.
- Frequently used prompts, copied verbatim where small wording changes affect results.
- Project-specific instructions, terminology, assumptions, and constraints.
- Uploaded reference files and the questions for which each file is used.
- Custom GPTs or equivalent bots, including their instructions, conversation starters, tools, and sharing expectations.
- Connected apps, actions, API keys, webhooks, and the data each connection may read or change.
- Representative outputs that show what “good” looks like, plus one difficult or edge-case example.
Classify sensitivity and ownership
Mark items containing personal, customer, regulated, or confidential information. Remove or redact data before importing it into a different service unless the transfer is necessary and permitted. Note who owns each workflow and who must be able to use it after the move; a private prototype and a team-critical assistant have different migration requirements.
Create a handoff note for long projects
For an important conversation, write a short handoff document containing the current goal, decisions already made, unresolved questions, names and locations of important files, assumptions, and next steps. Keep the original transcript as an archive, but use the handoff note as the destination’s working context. This is more reliable than pasting thousands of messages into a new chat.
Export and inspect your old account
ChatGPT export steps
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you intend to leave.
- Open Settings → Data controls → Export.
- Submit the export request and wait for the email. OpenAI says delivery can take up to seven days.
- Download the ZIP while signed in to the requesting account. The download link expires 24 hours after delivery.
- Open the archive and search for the conversations, files, and account data you identified in your inventory.
- Copy essential prompts, instructions, and project decisions into your portable library; do not assume the archive will be readable by another provider.
OpenAI lists export availability for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts and eligible Edu workspaces. The export option is not available from settings for Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces; those organizations may have separate administrator procedures. Check the current ChatGPT export instructions before scheduling a cutover.

Claude export steps
- Use the Claude web app or Claude Desktop and sign in to the individual account.
- Open Settings → Privacy and request an export.
- Wait for the email, then download the archive while signed in. Anthropic’s link expires after 24 hours.
- Inspect the files and extract the prompts, decisions, and other material you need in the destination.
Anthropic documents this export for individual Free, Pro, and Max users. Export requests cannot be started from the iOS or Android apps. Team and Enterprise exports have organization-owner requirements. The current steps and eligibility are listed in Claude’s export documentation.
Keep two copies of the downloaded archive
Store the original ZIP in an access-controlled location and keep a second backup separate from your working prompt library. An optional portable external SSD can provide an offline copy, but no hardware is required and a drive does not import data for you. Protect archives as sensitive records: they may contain personal information, uploaded documents, and credentials accidentally pasted into chats.

Use ordinary files that you can read and edit without the original service. A simple folder structure is enough:
00-profile/for response preferences, writing style, language, accessibility needs, and standing constraints.01-prompts/for reusable task prompts, each with its purpose, inputs, output format, and an example.02-projects/for project instructions, handoff notes, decisions, and unresolved questions.03-reference-files/for approved documents and a note explaining what each file contains.04-integrations/for a human-readable list of required tools, scopes, owners, and reauthorization steps; never store raw secrets in a prompt.05-tests/for familiar prompts, expected characteristics, strict-format checks, and edge cases.
Write prompts so another model can execute them
Separate the task from provider-specific controls. Put the objective, inputs, constraints, output schema, examples, and quality checks in the prompt itself. Keep model names, temperature controls, proprietary tool syntax, or special system fields in a separate “destination settings” note. This makes it clear which behavior must be reproduced and which control has no equivalent.
Convert transcripts into useful context
Do not migrate every historical message by default. For each valuable thread, retain the original transcript, then create a concise summary with decisions, definitions, open issues, and next actions. Include links or filenames for source documents and identify statements that are assumptions rather than verified facts. This reduces context size and gives the destination a stable brief.

Rebuild features on the destination
Memory and preferences
Recreate global preferences in the destination’s instruction or profile controls, then add only durable facts to persistent memory. If you use Claude’s memory import flow, open its memory settings, paste the prepared entries, and review what it creates. Anthropic labels this import experimental and warns that it may not incorporate every imported memory; correct omissions or inaccurate entries before using the account for important work. The documented process is in Claude’s memory import and export guide.
Projects and files
Create a destination project for each active workstream. Re-upload the minimum approved reference set, preserve filenames where prompts mention them, and add a short index describing each file’s purpose and version. Ask a known question whose answer is in a reference file, then verify that the destination cites or uses the correct document rather than guessing.
Custom GPTs and equivalent assistants
When a provider supplies a migration tool, inspect its mapping instead of assuming parity. OpenAI’s documented custom-GPT migration maps instructions into a skill, knowledge files into reference files, and connected apps into a plugin. Custom actions and the selected model do not transfer, and sharing settings do not automatically carry over. Only the latest published GPT version is used; drafts and unpublished edits do not transfer directly. A migrated plugin starts private, so you must set user access again. The limitations and mapping are documented in the custom-GPT migration FAQ.
Save conversation starters and representative previous chats separately. OpenAI’s migration guide notes that these may not copy and that the replacement can behave differently. Recreate missing starters as explicit examples in the new assistant’s instructions, then test the result using the original examples.
Tools, actions, and permissions
List every action the workflow performs, the account that authorizes it, and the minimum data scope required. Reconnect tools one at a time. Confirm whether the destination can read, create, update, or delete data; similar names do not imply identical permissions. Have a second user test a shared workflow with normal access, not an administrator account.

Test before you cut over
Testing should answer whether the replacement is usable, not whether it can produce one impressive answer. Keep the old provider available while testing, subject to its account and retirement rules.
| Test | Procedure | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction fidelity | Run a familiar prompt that depends on tone, structure, language, or exclusions | The required behavior appears without manually repeating hidden context |
| Reference retrieval | Ask a question with a known answer in an uploaded file, then ask about a different file | The correct document is used and unsupported details are not invented |
| Strict output | Request the exact format your downstream process expects, such as valid JSON or a fixed table | Syntax, fields, and ordering meet the real consumer’s requirements |
| Tool action | Use each connected app in a safe test environment or with a reversible change | The intended action succeeds with the expected account and scope |
| Edge case | Run a difficult, ambiguous, or unusually long example from the old workflow | The result is acceptable or the required fallback is documented |
| Shared access | Ask a second user to install or use the workflow normally | They can access the assistant, files, and tools they are supposed to use—and nothing more |
Record differences rather than hiding them
For each test, save the prompt, destination configuration, output, and any correction required. A difference is acceptable when it still meets the business or personal requirement; it is a migration defect when a missing tool, file, permission, or instruction changes the outcome. Update the prompt or choose a different destination only after identifying which component caused the difference.
Choose a destination by capability, not brand similarity
The sources available for this guide do not establish a universal “best provider.” Compare the service against the workflows you must preserve.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Import and export | Can you download all needed data? Can the destination import an archive, selected context, or only pasted text? | Current help documentation and a small import trial |
| Instructions and memory | Where do reusable prompts, preferences, projects, and memory live? Can you inspect and edit them? | Settings screens and exported entries |
| Files and retrieval | What file types and limits apply? Does retrieval work for your real documents? | A reference-file test using representative questions |
| Tools and integrations | Are required apps or actions available? What must be rebuilt or authorized again? | Permission scopes and a reversible action test |
| Sharing and ownership | Who owns the workflow, who can install it, and do permissions survive a move? | A normal-user access test and workspace policy |
| Observed behavior | Do familiar prompts and hard cases still produce acceptable results? | Side-by-side test records, not a single demonstration |
| Account and regional limits | Which plan, country, workspace, or device is required for each feature? | Current provider notices immediately before purchase or cutover |
Cut over safely
- Finish the inventory, export, inspection, and prompt-library backup.
- Rebuild the highest-value workflows first, beginning with those that affect deadlines, customers, or regulated data.
- Complete the test matrix and fix failures rather than relying on manual workarounds.
- Tell collaborators where the replacement lives, how to request access, and which old links are no longer authoritative.
- Freeze edits in the old workflow or record a final change log so the two versions do not diverge silently.
- Run a short parallel period for critical work, comparing outputs and monitoring permissions.
- Revoke old integrations, API keys, shared links, and team access only after confirming that nothing still depends on them.
- Close or downgrade the old account only when retention, billing, legal, and organizational requirements are satisfied.
Keep the original export and your final handoff notes according to your retention policy. Deleting an account can remove access to information that was never copied into the portable library.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The export email never arrives
Check the requesting account’s address, spam and quarantine folders, and whether the workspace administrator controls exports. Remember that ChatGPT delivery can take up to seven days. If a download link arrives, use it within its 24-hour validity window rather than postponing the download.

Important chats are missing from the archive
Search the archive using distinctive words, dates, and project names. Verify that you exported the account containing the chats, not a different login or workspace. If a conversation is still visible in the old service, copy its essential prompts and create a handoff note before making further account changes.
The destination assistant ignores instructions
Check whether the text was placed in a project instruction, global preference, memory entry, or ordinary chat. Providers prioritize these locations differently. Reduce conflicting rules, state the desired output explicitly, and rerun the same test prompt. Keep provider-specific controls outside the portable prompt until you know their destination equivalent.
Imported memory is wrong or incomplete
Review every generated entry against your prepared list. Delete stale or sensitive facts, split combined entries into clear statements, and add omissions manually. Do not treat an experimental import as proof that all old memory survived.
A migrated assistant cannot perform an old action
Identify whether the failure is caused by an unavailable tool, a missing authorization, a changed permission scope, or an action that does not transfer. Rebuild custom actions separately, authorize the replacement connection, and test with a reversible operation. If the destination cannot provide the capability, document a manual fallback before retiring the old workflow.
Outputs look different even with the same prompt
Different models, retrieval systems, system instructions, and tool schemas can change behavior. Compare the result against the acceptance criteria and saved examples rather than expecting identical wording. Add explicit constraints and examples where needed; if an edge case still fails, keep that workflow on the old provider or redesign it.
Final decision checklist
- Every critical conversation has been exported or summarized.
- Reusable prompts, preferences, project instructions, files, and integration requirements exist outside the old account.
- Sensitive material has been redacted or approved for the destination.
- Destination features, memory, files, tools, and sharing have been rebuilt and reviewed.
- Familiar prompts, strict formats, a hard case, and normal-user permissions have passed testing.
- Collaborators know the new location and access process.
- Old links, credentials, and integrations will be revoked only after dependencies are checked.
- Retention and deletion decisions are recorded before account closure.
A provider switch is successful when the people and systems that depend on your workflows can still complete their real tasks—not when an archive merely downloads. Staged transfer and explicit testing preserve the parts that an account export cannot.
