You can change the model for an open Duck.ai conversation in two clicks: select the current model name in the chat input area, then choose another model. You can also use the reverse-direction arrows below the latest reply. To change the model used by default, select the current model name in DuckDuckGo’s left sidebar.
How to switch the model in your current DuckDuckGo AI Chat
These controls change the model used for the conversation you are viewing. DuckDuckGo’s official instructions identify two ways to open the model selector.
Use the model name beside the chat input
- Open Duck.ai and open the chat you want to continue.
- Find the current model name in the chat input area.
- Click or tap that model name to open the picker.
- Select the model you want to use from the choices shown for your account.
The picker is the authoritative list for that session. Model names and access can change, so use the choices currently displayed rather than relying on an old screenshot or copied list.

Use the arrows below the latest answer
- Scroll to the bottom of the model’s most recent reply.
- Select the reverse-direction arrows icon.
- Choose a different model from the selector.
DuckDuckGo describes this icon as another way to change the chat model. If you do not see it, make sure you are at the bottom of the latest reply and that the reply has finished generating.

How to change the default model
- Open Duck.ai and look at the left sidebar.
- Click the name of the currently selected model in that sidebar.
- Choose the model you want from the list.
This is a separate control from the selector in the message area. Use the sidebar control when you want to change the default choice, rather than only changing the model shown in one open conversation.

- Chat input area: the current model’s name appears with the controls for composing a message.
- Latest reply: the reverse-direction arrows icon appears at the bottom of the most recent response.
For the default model, look in the left sidebar and select the model name shown there. The exact set of names in the picker depends on the account and on DuckDuckGo’s current availability.
Which models can you choose?
DuckDuckGo’s official model page currently lists the following choices, but it also warns that availability can change. Treat this table as a dated description of the page, not a permanent catalog. The live picker in your Duck.ai account is the practical check.

See DuckDuckGo’s current model list for the page behind these names. Another official subscriber help page has shown a different model and tier list, including GPT-5.4 and a different description of Pro. That inconsistency is why the dropdown for your account should take precedence over a static list.
What to do when a model is missing
Check the live picker first
Open the model selector from the input area or the arrows below the latest reply. If the model is not listed there, it is not currently available to that account in that context. DuckDuckGo can change the catalog, and access can vary by subscription.

Verify the account and subscription
Some models are listed as Plus or Pro additions. If you expected one of those models but only see free choices, confirm that Duck.ai is using the account with the relevant subscription. The official advanced-models help page is useful for checking the subscription-specific explanation, but the picker remains the final availability check.
Distinguish a changed catalog from a broken control
- If the model picker opens and contains other models, the control is working; the requested model may no longer be offered, may be limited to another tier, or may be unavailable during a catalog change.
- If the current model name is not visible in the input area, check that you are in a Duck.ai chat rather than a regular DuckDuckGo search page.
- If the arrows are absent, scroll to the end of the latest response and wait for generation to finish; use the input-area model name as the alternate route.
- If the sidebar is collapsed, expand it so the default-model control is visible.
Changing a model versus regenerating an answer
The arrows control is located under the latest reply, so it is useful when you want to continue from the current conversation with another model. The input-area selector is useful before sending the next message because it makes the intended model visible while you compose. The sidebar selector serves a different purpose: it changes the default model choice rather than merely exposing the active-chat control.

DuckDuckGo’s help documentation explains how to select a model but does not establish that models produce equivalent answers, preserve every hidden system setting, or have identical context limits. Do not infer a quality ranking from the order of models in the picker.

DuckDuckGo’s documentation supports comparing models by provider and by the access distinctions it publishes, not by an independently verified performance ranking. A practical approach is:
- Start with availability. Pick only from models currently shown in your picker.
- Check your plan. Free, Plus and Pro accounts can expose different choices.
- Match the provider or model family to your preference. The picker identifies the provider and model name, which is the reliable information DuckDuckGo publishes for selection.
- Consider the documented Pro settings. DuckDuckGo describes higher reasoning effort and higher usage limits for the Pro additions, but it does not provide a universal quality score.
- Use a small, repeatable prompt when evaluating. If you are deciding between models for your own work, run the same prompt in separate chats and judge the outputs against your actual requirements. This is a personal comparison, not a claim that one model is objectively best.
Privacy considerations when switching models
Changing models does not remove the privacy qualifications that apply to Duck.ai. DuckDuckGo says it does not record or store chats by default and says conversations are not used to train models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers. Those statements are DuckDuckGo’s policy claims, not a guarantee that no data can ever be retained under any circumstance.

Its privacy documentation also describes provider-specific exceptions: some providers may use short-term prompt caching, and Anthropic may retain information for legal or abuse-related reasons. Read DuckDuckGo’s AI chat privacy explanation before entering sensitive information, especially if you turn on Sync & Backup or select a provider whose terms include an exception.
