Short answer: move the project’s durable knowledge into reviewed, version-controlled repository files, then use any supported product import for recent work or personal memory as a convenience. Do not treat a private chat log, hidden memory, hooks, or permissions as a portable project record. After importing, start a clean session and test what the new assistant actually understands before it makes consequential edits.

What “project context” includes—and what it does not

A coding assistant can appear to remember a project for several different reasons. Separating those sources prevents a migration from quietly dropping important information or carrying obsolete instructions into the new tool.

Context layer What belongs there Best migration treatment
Project context Architecture, directory responsibilities, coding conventions, build and test commands, deployment constraints, security requirements, known pitfalls, unresolved work, and the reasons behind non-obvious decisions. Write a concise, reviewed handoff in the repository and version it with the code. Adapt its filename or location to the destination assistant.
Personal preferences How you prefer explanations, formatting, commit messages, review style, verbosity, or tool usage. Export or summarize separately. Apply it through the destination’s user-level preferences or memory feature when available.
Chat or session history Recent prompts, generated patches, investigative dead ends, terminal output, and the exact conversation that led to a change. Use a supported import when the source and destination are explicitly listed. Keep an archive if the history has evidentiary or debugging value; never assume it will be recreated.
Tool-specific configuration Hooks, permission rules, MCP servers, editor integrations, skills, automations, and authentication. Audit and rebuild deliberately in the destination’s format. There is no general interchange format, and copying rules blindly can grant unsafe access or break workflows.

The repository is the only layer that can be reviewed in pull requests, rolled back with normal Git operations, and read by a replacement tool without depending on one vendor’s private storage. That does not mean every assistant reads every instruction file: support and scope are product-specific and change over time.

Inventory the old assistant before you disconnect it

Start while the old assistant still has access to its chats and workspace. Your goal is not to export every message; it is to identify facts that a competent developer would need on the first day in the project.

Extract facts that are not obvious from the code

  • Architecture decisions: why a service boundary exists, why a data store or queue was selected, which modules are intentionally isolated, and which APIs are contractually stable.
  • Conventions: naming, error handling, logging, test organization, dependency policy, generated-file rules, and the expected shape of pull requests.
  • Operational commands: local setup, environment variables, migrations, linting, unit and integration tests, release steps, rollback commands, and deployment prerequisites.
  • Constraints: supported runtimes, latency or cost ceilings, regulatory requirements, data-handling rules, network restrictions, and components that must not be changed.
  • Known pitfalls: flaky tests, order-dependent scripts, platform-specific behavior, required service emulators, and fixes that are easy to accidentally undo.
  • Current state: the active task, partially completed work, open questions, blocked dependencies, and the next safe step.
  • Rationale: the reason behind decisions that are otherwise likely to look like mistakes. A short explanation can stop a new assistant from “simplifying” an intentional exception.

Separate evidence from guesses

For each proposed instruction, ask whether a new developer could verify it in the repository, a build system, or an operational document. Mark uncertain statements as questions or hypotheses rather than presenting them as rules. Remove secrets, tokens, customer data, and copied logs that contain credentials. The handoff should explain how to obtain access, not embed access itself.

Capture unresolved work explicitly

Do not hide unfinished investigations inside a long transcript. Record the symptom, what has been tried, the current hypothesis, files or logs involved, and a bounded next experiment. Include the date or commit associated with the observation so a later assistant can tell whether it is still current.

Create a reviewed handoff in the repository

Use a file the destination assistant is documented to read. OpenAI’s Codex documentation describes /init as a way to generate an AGENTS.md scaffold. Anthropic describes CLAUDE.md for architecture, conventions, and commands, with user-wide, repository, and subdirectory scopes. These names are not a universal standard; confirm the destination’s current discovery rules before relying on them.

A practical handoff layout

Keep the top-level file short enough to review. Link to deeper documents rather than turning it into a transcript. A useful structure is:

# Project handoff

## Purpose and boundaries
- What this repository does
- What it deliberately does not do

## Repository map
- service-a/: responsibility and public interfaces
- web/: application entry points
- infra/: deployment definitions; edit only with approval

## Required workflow
- Supported runtime and package-manager versions
- Setup command
- Fast checks before a change
- Full test and build commands

## Conventions
- Naming, error handling, logging, and test patterns
- Generated files and files that must not be edited by hand

## Constraints and safety
- Data, security, compatibility, and deployment restrictions
- Secrets come from the approved secret store; never commit them

## Current work
- Branch or commit
- Completed investigation
- Open questions and the next smallest experiment

## Decision record
- Decision, date or commit, alternatives considered, and reason

## Change protocol
- Inspect before editing
- Run targeted checks
- Show a diff and report failures

Replace the example content with facts specific to the project. Do not include instructions such as “always trust generated code” or “skip tests when time is short”; those are preferences or unsafe shortcuts, not project context.

Use scope intentionally

Put repository-wide rules at the root. Put a subdirectory file next to a genuinely independent component when its commands or conventions differ. Keep personal writing preferences out of the repository so they do not surprise collaborators. If a rule is inherited by nested directories, say so plainly and avoid contradictory local files.

Review generated scaffolding

A generated AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md is a draft. Check every command, path, version, and prohibition against the current tree. Delete stale rules, merge duplicates, and open a normal pull request so another developer can review the handoff. Treat Anthropic’s description of CLAUDE.md as a “living onboarding doc, not a spec”: it should evolve with the project rather than become an immutable policy dump.

Use built-in import only as an accelerator

Import support is specific to a source, destination, product edition, and current interface. Before switching, open the destination’s current documentation and confirm the exact path shown for your account and platform.

OpenAI-documented paths

OpenAI’s current guide documents a ChatGPT desktop import flow for work from Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Cursor. It also documents Codex CLI import from Claude Code or Cursor. These lists are not evidence that every conversation, attachment, terminal state, or configuration item will move. Export or copy the repository handoff first, then use the importer for recent work that is useful to preserve.

Claude memory import and export

Anthropic documents a memory import/export path to and from other AI providers. The Claude Help Center labels memory import experimental and warns that it may not incorporate every imported memory (September 2, 2026). Treat the result as a draft: retain your source summary, inspect what arrived, and enter missing items manually rather than assuming a successful-looking import is complete.

When no importer exists

Make a small migration bundle containing the reviewed handoff, a current-task summary, links or identifiers for important commits, and an archive of selected conversations if they are needed for audit or debugging. Store it in an access-controlled location. Do not paste an entire chat into a project instruction file; it adds noise, can contain stale commands, and makes future review difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebuild hooks, permissions, and integrations safely

Hooks and permission rules are not shared in a common format. A migration guide from one provider specifically states that they must be rebuilt during its migration path. MCP servers, editor integrations, skills, automations, and credentials can have the same problem.

Audit by intent, not by syntax

  1. List every hook, permission, server, and integration enabled in the old assistant.
  2. For each item, write its purpose, trigger, inputs, outputs, required credentials, and the directories or services it can affect.
  3. Check whether the destination supports an equivalent capability and read its current configuration and security model.
  4. Recreate only the rules still wanted. Start with read-only access and narrow paths; expand only when a task requires it.
  5. Run a harmless test that demonstrates the intended behavior, then inspect logs and the resulting diff.

Never copy an allowlist or shell hook wholesale. A command that was safe in one tool’s sandbox may run with broader access in another. Revoke old credentials and re-authorize integrations through the destination’s documented flow.

Verify the new assistant in a fresh session

A clean session exposes whether the repository and handoff are sufficient instead of letting hidden conversation state mask a missing instruction.

  1. Check out the intended branch or commit and confirm the working tree is clean with your normal Git status command.
  2. Start a new session in the destination assistant; do not preload the old transcript unless you are specifically testing an import.
  3. Ask it to summarize the architecture, the purpose of each major directory, the supported setup and test commands, the current task, the constraints, and the next smallest safe step.
  4. Compare the summary line by line with the repository and handoff. Correct the file when the source is wrong; do not merely tell the assistant to remember a correction in chat.
  5. Ask for the first command it would run and why. Reject commands that mutate data, deploy, rotate credentials, or rewrite large areas before inspection.
  6. Give it a small, reversible task such as locating a symbol, adding a focused test, or explaining an existing function. Require a diff and the checks it ran.
  7. Run the relevant tests and linters yourself. Review the diff, generated files, network calls, and permissions just as you would review a human contribution.
  8. Only after the dry run succeeds, allow broader edits or let the assistant use rebuilt integrations.

Use a mismatch log

Record each incorrect assumption discovered during verification: the mistaken statement, the authoritative correction, and the file or commit that proves it. Update the handoff or code when appropriate, then repeat the summary test. This turns a one-time migration check into a concrete backlog for improving project documentation.

Maintain one source of truth after the switch

Version project guidance with the code

Require changes to the handoff in the same review system as code. When a command, directory, runtime, or deployment rule changes, update the instruction file in the same pull request or make the dependency explicit. Keep personal preferences in user settings so the repository remains useful to every contributor and every assistant.

Assign ownership and review cadence

Name a team or role responsible for keeping the handoff accurate. Anthropic’s guidance recommends a quarterly skim of the living onboarding document; use that interval as a minimum, and review sooner after a major architectural or operational change. Delete rules that no longer protect the project. Stale context is an active defect because it can cause a confident but incorrect edit.

Keep rollback simple

Tag or commit the handoff before migration. Keep the exported memory and selected session archive separately from the working instructions. If the new assistant behaves badly, revert the instruction-file change, disable newly rebuilt integrations, and return to the last known-safe configuration while investigating. A rollback should not require recovering a private vendor conversation.

What each destination can and cannot be assumed to carry

Migration question Claude Codex Cursor
Project instruction files CLAUDE.md is documented for user-wide, repository, and subdirectory guidance covering architecture, conventions, and commands. OpenAI documents /init to scaffold AGENTS.md; confirm the current scope and discovery behavior for your CLI or workspace. Use the current rules documentation to confirm filenames, scopes, and precedence; exact current details were not established by the available material.
Personal memory Import/export is documented, but memory import is experimental and may omit items. Use the destination’s current memory or preference controls; no universal cross-provider memory format is established. Check the current account and workspace options; do not infer support from project-rule files.
Recent work or sessions Use a listed importer when available; otherwise preserve a local archive. OpenAI documents Codex CLI import from Claude Code or Cursor. Check whether the current source/destination pair is listed by the receiving product.
Hooks, permissions, skills, and integrations Assume they require an intent-based audit and reconstruction. No shared format makes a blind copy reliable.
Verification and rollback Use the same repository handoff, fresh-session summary, reversible test, diff review, and version-control rollback procedure.

Common failure modes and recovery

The assistant “remembers” a rule that was never written down

That rule may exist only in a private memory or old chat. Ask for its source, verify it against the repository, and add the confirmed version to the handoff. If it cannot be verified, label it as an open question rather than preserving it as fact.

The imported summary contains stale commands

Run each command in a safe environment and compare it with package manifests, CI configuration, and deployment documentation. Replace obsolete commands in the handoff and note any version prerequisite. Do not leave both old and new commands without explaining when each applies.

A configuration import grants too much access

Disable the imported hook or permission rule, revoke any exposed credential, and recreate the capability with the narrowest paths and operations required. Test with a harmless file before enabling write or deployment access.

The new tool changes code in the wrong style

Add a concrete example to the project conventions, point to the authoritative module, and ask for a small corrective patch. If the style is not a real project requirement, keep it as a personal preference instead of burdening every contributor with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The old conversation is needed for an audit

Keep an access-controlled, read-only archive with the relevant commit IDs and dates. Store the durable decision and its rationale in the repository; the archive is supporting evidence, not the operating manual.

A compact migration checklist

  • Inventory architecture, conventions, commands, constraints, pitfalls, decisions, and unresolved work.
  • Remove secrets and distinguish verified facts from hypotheses.
  • Generate or review the destination-compatible project file, such as AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md.
  • Commit the handoff and have another developer review it.
  • Check the destination’s current import options and supported source list.
  • Export personal preferences or memory separately from project instructions.
  • Archive important sessions without assuming they will become searchable in the new tool.
  • Inventory hooks, permissions, MCP servers, skills, integrations, and credentials.
  • Rebuild configuration by intent with least privilege.
  • Start a fresh session, request an architecture-and-task summary, and correct mismatches in files.
  • Test one reversible task, inspect the diff, and run checks yourself.
  • Assign ownership, review the handoff at least quarterly, and delete stale guidance.
