To switch one game away from Proton Experimental, open its Steam Properties, select Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool if required, and choose an installed, numbered Proton release such as Proton 11.0. Close the window, allow Steam to install that release if it is missing, and launch the game again. This changes the compatibility tool for that game; it does not require uninstalling Proton Experimental.

What changes when you leave Proton Experimental

Proton is the compatibility layer Steam uses to run many Windows games on Linux-based systems. Steam lets you select a Proton build for an individual game. The setting is separate from the Proton tools installed on your system, so selecting a numbered release does not remove Experimental or alter every other game.

Valve describes its numbered Stable releases as versions that go through quality assurance and a public release-candidate phase. Proton Experimental is the public-testing track for changes and experimental features that may not yet be included in a numbered Stable release. That difference explains why Experimental can fix a new problem for one game while introducing a regression for another.

Choice Purpose What to expect
Proton Experimental Public testing of newer changes and experimental features May contain fixes before Stable, but can also contain regressions or behavior that has not completed the Stable release process
Numbered Proton release Use a specific Stable build for a game Usually a more conservative troubleshooting choice when an Experimental update caused a problem; the best numbered version still depends on the title
Another installed numbered release Test compatibility across Stable versions Useful when the newest numbered build is not the one that works best with a particular game

Switching back is therefore a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. Valve issue reports document cases in which an Experimental change caused a regression and a Stable release or alternate branch was suggested. They also document an individual incident in which affected games were moved to Proton 9.0. That report does not establish Proton 9.0 as the correct choice for every game today.

Before you change the setting

  • Confirm that the problem began after an Experimental change. A crash, failure to launch, broken video playback, or another new symptom may be related to the compatibility tool, but a game update, driver change, or Steam update can produce similar symptoms.
  • Decide whether the change is per-game or global. The procedure below affects only the selected title. Do not change a global Steam default if you are trying to repair one game.
  • Check which numbered Proton builds are already installed. The list may include several releases, and availability can differ between systems.
  • Protect important local data. The available material does not establish identical save or Proton-prefix behavior for every game and every version. If a title has valuable local saves or configuration files, back them up using the game’s own method or your normal system backup before experimenting.
  • Record the current setting. Note whether the game was on Proton Experimental, a numbered release, or the default selection. That makes it easier to return to the previous state.

Step-by-step: select a Stable Proton version for one game

  1. Open Steam Library. Find the game that is having trouble. This is a per-game setting, so start from the affected title rather than from Steam’s general settings.
  2. Open the game’s Properties. Right-click the title in the Library list, or use the title’s manage menu, then choose Properties. Steam client layouts can move this command, but it remains part of the game’s property window.
  3. Choose Compatibility. In the Properties sidebar, select Compatibility. If the page is not visible immediately, enlarge the window or scroll the sidebar; labels can differ slightly between Steam builds.
  4. Enable the forced-tool option when necessary. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. This tells Steam to use the version you choose for this title instead of relying on the default selection.
  5. Open the version menu. Select the drop-down beneath the forced-tool option. Choose an installed, numbered Proton release, such as Proton 11.0, rather than Proton Experimental. The exact numbered releases shown depend on what Steam has made available and what is installed on your system.
  6. Close Properties. Steam saves the compatibility selection when you close the window. If the selected release is not installed, Steam may begin downloading it before the game starts.
  7. Wait for installation to finish. Let Steam complete any compatibility-tool download or update. Interrupting that process can leave the title unable to launch until the tool is installed correctly.
  8. Launch the game. Test the same action that previously failed: start-up, loading a save, entering a particular menu, or reproducing the crash. A version change is meaningful only when you check the original symptom.

Choosing among numbered Proton releases

There is no universal “best” Stable version. Compatibility depends on the game, its engine, its launcher, and the specific change that caused the regression. Start with a numbered release that you know worked previously if you have that information. Otherwise, test available numbered releases methodically instead of changing several settings at once.

If your situation is… First choice Why
You know the game worked on a particular numbered release That same release It gives you the clearest comparison with the known-good configuration
Experimental stopped working after an update and no prior version is known An available numbered Stable release It removes the Experimental track from the test while keeping the change limited to one game
The newest numbered release still fails Another installed numbered release Different Stable builds can handle a title differently; newer is not automatically better for every game
A Valve issue report names a workaround for your exact title and symptom The version or alternate branch described for that incident Issue reports are useful evidence for that specific case, but they are not a guarantee for unrelated games

Change one variable at a time. If you switch Proton versions and graphics settings together, you will not know which change affected the result. Keep a short record of the selected release, whether the game launched, and whether the original problem remained.

What to do if the option is missing

The Compatibility page is present but the checkbox is off

Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then reopen the version menu. Steam may hide or disable the selector until the forced-tool setting is active.

The wording does not match exactly

Steam client layouts change over time. Look for the game’s Properties, a Compatibility section, and a control that says Steam Play or compatibility tool. Valve’s documentation uses the forced-tool wording, but your client may present a shortened label or a slightly different arrangement.

No numbered release is listed

Steam can show only tools that are available to that installation. Check whether the client is online and allow pending Steam updates to complete. If a release appears in the menu but is not installed, selecting it may trigger a download. Do not substitute Proton Experimental merely because it is the only visible item if your goal is specifically to leave Experimental behavior behind.

You are looking at Proton Experimental’s own Properties

Valve’s Proton version guide describes finding Proton Experimental in the Steam Library and opening its Properties to reach version or beta controls. That is different from changing a game’s compatibility tool. To repair one game, return to the affected game’s Library entry and open that game’s Properties instead.

If the game still fails after switching

Test a second numbered release

Return to the game’s Properties > Compatibility page and choose another installed numbered release. Test the same symptom again. The appropriate version can vary by title, and a release that works for one game may not work for another.

Return to the previous setting

If the Stable selection performs worse, reopen the same page and restore the setting you recorded earlier. You can select Proton Experimental again if that was the prior configuration, or choose the previous numbered release. This is a reversible per-game setting; you do not need to remove any Proton tool to undo it.

Separate a Proton problem from a game problem

If several numbered releases produce the same failure, the cause may not be the Experimental build. Compare the exact timing and symptom: does the title fail before its launcher appears, only when loading a particular save, or after a game update? Keep the Proton selection fixed while checking other game-specific causes. The available evidence does not support a single universal fix for all launch failures.

  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Use a documented, title-specific workaround carefully

Valve issue reports can identify regressions affecting named games. One report opened October 23, 2024, concerned media-source changes in Proton Experimental and recommended a Stable release or alternate branch for affected cases. Another report dated June 23, 2026 described an Experimental update failure and a user’s workaround of moving affected games to Proton 9.0. Treat both as incident-specific guidance: match the game and symptom before applying the same version, and do not assume the older release is generally preferable.

Per-game selection versus a global default

For a single broken title, use the game’s Compatibility page. A global default is appropriate only when you intentionally want Steam to use a different baseline for many games. Changing the global choice can alter behavior for titles that currently work, making troubleshooting harder. A per-game override lets you leave other games on their existing settings while you test a Stable release on the affected one.

Likewise, uninstalling Proton Experimental is unnecessary for this task. Steam manages compatibility tools as software components, and the game can use a numbered release while Experimental remains installed for another title or for future testing.

How to verify that Steam used the selected version

  • Reopen the game’s Properties > Compatibility page and confirm that the forced-tool option remains enabled and the intended numbered release is displayed.
  • Watch Steam’s download activity after selecting the release. A missing tool may need to be downloaded before launch.
  • Launch the game from its normal Library entry rather than changing several launch settings at once.
  • Repeat the action that exposed the regression and compare the result with the Experimental configuration.
  • Write down the version and outcome before trying another release, so you can return to the first working combination.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the wrong Properties window: Proton Experimental’s own entry and a game’s entry have different purposes.
  • Assuming “Stable” guarantees compatibility: Stable describes the release track, not a promise that every game works on every numbered build.
  • Always choosing the newest number: A title may depend on behavior from an earlier release, so test based on evidence rather than recency.
  • Removing Experimental unnecessarily: Installation and selection are separate; leaving the tool installed does not force the game to use it.
  • Changing multiple variables at once: Keep the Proton version as the only change during the first comparison.
  • Assuming saves are identical across every setup: Save and prefix behavior is not established uniformly for all games and versions. Back up important local data before troubleshooting.

When switching back is the right response

Move from Experimental to a numbered Proton release when a game worked before an Experimental update and now shows a reproducible regression, or when a Valve issue report identifies a Stable release as a workaround for the same title and symptom. Stay on Experimental when you specifically need a fix that has not reached Stable and the game is functioning acceptably. In either case, make the decision per game and verify it against the behavior you care about.
