The safest first tree run in Caves of Qud: Diaspora is an experiment built around distance, escape and deliberate exploration. Choose the tree plant stock only if you are comfortable learning an Early Access system whose exact statistics and mutation balance are not yet published. Take defensive or mobility-oriented mutations when offered, use a spear at range if your character can learn its skill, follow roads while you learn the map, and treat caravans and saltbacks as optional opportunities rather than objectives.
Diaspora is the announced first expansion for Caves of Qud. Its Steam listing describes Mutated Animal and Mutated Plant genotypes, including a tree stock, and requires the base game. The planned Steam Early Access release is December 9, 2026. Because development is expected to continue through 2027, this is a survival framework rather than a permanent “best build.”
What a first tree run actually means
In Caves of Qud: Diaspora, the sapient tree is a playable plant stock, not a separate game mode. You begin by choosing the Mutated Plant genotype and then selecting a stock such as a tree or vine. The announced Early Access core includes three plant stocks and nine animal stocks, with additional plant and animal mutations used to shape the character.

Any guide claiming a definitive tree spread before those details are documented is presenting speculation as fact. The practical approach is to build for the problems every new character faces: surviving the first hostile encounter, creating space, escaping a bad fight and reaching useful locations without wandering into a stronger threat.

Requirements and Early Access expectations
| Item | Confirmed detail | Why it matters to a first run |
|---|---|---|
| Game | Caves of Qud: Diaspora | The tree stock belongs to the expansion’s announced Mutated Plant selection. |
| Base game | Caves of Qud is required | You cannot use the expansion as a standalone game. |
| Platform and release | Steam Early Access planned for December 9, 2026 | Systems and balance may differ by the time you play. |
| Development window | Updates are expected through 2027 | A build that works in one update may need to be rebuilt after a patch. |
| Announced survival tools | Plant mutations, two-tile spear attacks, improved roads and rivers, dromad caravans and mountable saltbacks | These are the systems most relevant to staying alive and moving safely. |
The developers describe the expansion as changing and growing throughout development, with possible instability as well as “a lot of vitality.” Treat old character advice, screenshots and route assumptions as version-dependent. Record the update number when you start a run so you can tell whether a failed plan was a tactical mistake or a balance change.
Choosing the tree without locking yourself into a bad plan
Pick the tree for learning, not for a solved build
Select the tree when you want to test the plant systems and accept that the optimal choices are not established. A tree run is a good first experiment if you enjoy discovering how a new stock interacts with mutations, weapons and terrain. It is a poor choice if you need a fully documented, low-risk route on your first attempt.
Spend early mutation choices on survival functions
The expansion’s announced mutation system lets you shape the character, but no source publishes an authoritative order for tree mutations. When the game presents choices, prioritize the function that solves the next likely failure:

- Movement: speed, repositioning or any reliable way to create distance helps you choose when a fight happens.
- Reach: an attack that works from farther away reduces the number of turns an enemy can spend hitting you.
- Disengagement: a teleport, dash, escape action or comparable tool is most useful when saved for a losing fight rather than spent for extra damage.
This is conservative guidance, not a verified best mutation order. Do not reject a mutation merely because it is not on a theoretical tree build: early updates may change costs, cooldowns, interaction rules or the stock’s starting package.

Do not assume plant traits from the name alone
“Tree” describes the selected stock; it does not, by itself, establish exact armor, hit points, speed, hunger behavior, resistances or weapon restrictions. Read the character sheet and mutation descriptions in your installed version. If a rule is not shown there, test it in a controlled situation rather than risking a deep expedition on an assumption.
Your first expedition: a low-risk sequence
- Finish character creation with a survivability question in mind. Before leaving the starting area, identify which mutation or ability is your emergency tool, which is your best source of movement and whether your character can access spear skills. You are creating a plan for the first dangerous encounter, not a final level-by-level build.
- Learn the basic combat loop in safe space. Confirm how your movement, attack, inventory and retreat commands behave. If the game provides a harmless target or low-risk area, use it to check reach and action costs. The objective is to know what one turn of movement or attacking does before an enemy is adjacent.
- Carry a way to survive a surprise. Keep healing, escape and defensive tools available rather than buried in containers. The exact items and quantities will vary by update; the invariant is that your emergency option must be usable immediately.
- Choose a road as your first navigation spine. Improved road generation is specifically intended to make reaching an interesting location more likely. Follow a road while you learn the region instead of cutting across every unknown tile. Stop to investigate only when the surrounding area is safe enough to retreat.
- Scout before committing. Approach a new location from a position that leaves a retreat route. Do not spend your escape ability merely to reach a doorway or loot pile. If you see a threat you cannot identify, preserve distance and decide whether the information is worth the risk.
- Return before your resources are critical. A first run teaches more when it ends with a controlled retreat than when it ends after every consumable and escape tool has been spent. Mark the road, note the enemies that forced you back and use that information on the next attempt.
Combat: use distance before damage
Why the announced spear skill matters
Diaspora advertises spear attacks that can reach two tiles away. That spacing gives a cautious character an opportunity to attack without immediately standing on the enemy’s tile. If the tree can learn or use the spear skill in your version, treat it as a spacing tool first and a damage upgrade second.
Exact compatibility between the tree stock and spear skill has not been published. Check the skill and equipment screens in game; do not assume that every plant stock receives the same weapon access. If the skill is available, practice keeping one or two tiles between you and the target, attacking when you have a clear retreat, and moving away before the opponent can close the gap. If it is not available, apply the same principle with whatever reach or control option your mutations provide.

Do not trade point-blank hits by default
Early characters have limited information about new creatures and items. A seemingly weak opponent may have a status effect, a second attack or an ally outside your view. Close combat is justified when the target is isolated and your defenses are established; it is not the safe default for an unfamiliar tree.

- Keep an exit tile behind or beside you before beginning an attack sequence.
- Do not let terrain, a doorway or an object remove your retreat route unless the position is clearly safer.
- Spend a defensive or movement mutation when it prevents a losing exchange, not after your health has already collapsed.
- Break line of approach when multiple enemies can reach you on the same turn.
Recognize a fight you should abandon
Leave when an enemy survives longer than expected, when a second threat enters, when you lose the space needed for ranged attacks or when your emergency tool is on cooldown. The goal of the first run is to preserve a character long enough to learn the expansion’s rules. There is no tactical value in proving that an untested matchup is winnable after your escape options are gone.
Where to go first: roads, rivers and unknown terrain
Use roads to reduce navigation uncertainty
The expansion’s improved roads and rivers are more sophisticated than the earlier generation described for the game. The developers specifically state that following a road is more likely to lead to an interesting location. That makes a road a sensible first route while you learn how the tree moves and how new encounters behave.
A road is a navigation aid, not a guarantee of safety. It can bring you toward danger as efficiently as toward useful content. Travel in short sections, pause at intersections and keep enough movement or health to reverse direction. If the route enters terrain where your tree is slow or exposed, leave the road temporarily rather than allowing the path’s promise of discovery to dictate every move.

Rivers are also part of the upgraded world generation, but the available announcement does not specify every crossing rule, hazard or travel bonus. Explore outward in layers
On your first outing, explore a small radius around the road and return. On the next, extend only one segment farther. This layered approach gives you known retreat points and prevents an unfamiliar creature, item or quest from pulling you beyond the area you can safely cross. The expansion adds new threats and equipment, so memorizing a route from an older build is less reliable than reading the current map.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dromad caravans and mountable saltbacks
Dromad caravans receive a makeover in Diaspora, and saltbacks can be mounted for travel and trade interactions. Those systems can improve a run, but public information does not establish their prices, encounter danger, stock, spawn frequency or exact route behavior.
Approach a caravan only from a controlled position
Do not divert through unexplored ground merely because a caravan is visible. Clear or understand the nearby threats first, keep an escape route open and approach when your character has enough health and movement to leave. If the surrounding encounter turns hostile or confusing, abandon the interaction; a caravan is an opportunity, not a destination worth dying for.
Evaluate a saltback as a travel tool
When a mountable saltback is available, check how mounting changes movement, combat exposure, inventory and dismounting in your version. Use it to shorten a safe journey or support a trade visit, not to force passage through enemies you would otherwise avoid. Because route behavior and trade values are not yet documented, test the interaction close to a known retreat rather than deep in unexplored territory.

What is confirmed and what remains unknown
The following boundaries keep a first-run guide honest:
- Confirmed: a tree is an announced plant stock; plant and animal mutations are part of the expansion; spears can attack from two tiles; roads and rivers receive improved generation; dromad caravans and mountable saltbacks are planned systems.
- Not established: the tree’s exact starting statistics, a mandatory mutation sequence, a guaranteed spear-training path for every tree, caravan prices, saltback route behavior and a universally safe opening route.
Use the in-game descriptions and your current patch as the authority for those details. A guide can recommend priorities, but it cannot turn unpublished numbers into reliable facts.
How to adapt after a failed run
If you die before reaching a useful location
Shorten the next route and spend the first mutation choice on durability, movement or disengagement rather than damage. Follow a road, stop more often and test whether the same enemy can be avoided by changing your approach angle.
If you win fights but cannot escape groups
Your problem is positioning, not necessarily offense. Keep your retreat tile clear, avoid starting combat near intersections that can feed additional enemies and save your movement or escape ability for the moment a second threat appears.
If the tree feels unable to deal damage
Do not immediately discard the stock. Check whether a spear skill, reach mutation or different weapon interaction is available in your version. Until you understand the damage model, use spacing and selective engagements to compensate rather than taking several point-blank trades.
If a familiar route no longer works after an update
Assume the update changed a system before assuming you made a hidden mistake. Re-read mutation and item descriptions, verify road and river behavior, and begin with a shorter scouting loop. Early Access updates can add plants, animals, mutations, items, creatures, quests and factions, so a previously safe pattern may be intentionally obsolete.
First-run checklist
- Confirm that you are playing Diaspora with the required base game installed.
- Choose the tree only if you accept experimentation and changing balance.
- Read every mutation description and identify one defensive or escape option.
- Check whether spear training and two-tile attacks are available to your character.
- Keep a retreat route open before engaging an unknown creature.
- Use roads as your initial navigation spine and explore in short layers.
- Approach caravans and saltbacks only when the surrounding area is controlled.
- Record the game update when a run succeeds or fails.
The winning mindset for a first sapient-tree run is controlled discovery: take the tree’s new options seriously, but never assume an untested interaction is a guarantee. Build enough durability and mobility to survive mistakes, use reach to decide when contact occurs, and let roads provide direction while you learn what this Early Access version has changed.
