Surviving random events in Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind means managing uncertainty rather than finding a universally correct answer. When a crisis appears, identify what it threatens, choose a response whose risk your clan can absorb, assign a leader for the actual task, and account for time, season, resources and possible follow-up events. Food, livestock, wealth, magic and good leadership make bad results recoverable; no choice guarantees success.
The game’s own objective is broader than defeating rival clans: “Your goal is to chart a course to survive in a hostile world, not simply defeat clan enemies.” (official manual) Crises can involve anything from marauding dinosaurs to diplomatic requests, and the game presents more than 400 interactive story scenes supported by simulation systems, according to the Steam listing. The number of scenes is a storefront feature claim, not a statistical measurement of event randomness.
What a “random event” means in Six Ages
The manual generally calls these episodes crises, situations or stories. An apparent solution can end a situation immediately, postpone its consequences or create another event later. That structure is why memorising a single “best” response is unreliable: the right decision depends on your clan’s reserves, current relationships, season, available leaders and tolerance for risk.

- Immediate resolution: the choice settles the visible problem, but may still cost people, goods, reputation or time.
- Deferred consequences: the crisis quiets down while a later event tests the decision again.
- Branching stories: one response opens a new situation, so the apparent short-term win may become a longer obligation.
No reviewed source establishes probabilities for individual choices, and the manual does not provide an answer key for every scene. Treat every recommendation as a risk-management decision, not a guaranteed solution.

Build a clan that can absorb bad luck
The best response to a crisis often begins several turns earlier. The manual advises keeping food secure, maintaining a reasonable level of livestock and building wealth; these reserves help with both emergencies and opportunities (official manual).
Protect food first
Food is the reserve that lets you survive a costly answer. Before committing to a risky expedition, raid or diplomatic undertaking, check whether the clan can tolerate lost production or an unexpected drain. A choice that looks attractive while stores are comfortable may be irresponsible when the next season’s supply is uncertain.
Keep livestock at a workable level
Livestock is both an economic resource and a buffer against misfortune. “Reasonable” is context-dependent: enough animals to support the clan and recover from losses is more useful than maximising a single short-term figure. Do not treat livestock as disposable just because a crisis offers an immediate advantage.

Wealth gives you room to pay costs, pursue opportunities and recover after a poor outcome. A clan with no reserves is forced into desperate options, while a wealthier clan can choose a cautious response or fund a corrective action later.
Preserve capable leaders and advisers
Keep several people suited to different tasks rather than relying on one exceptional character. Crises can demand fighting, negotiation, ritual knowledge, exploration or general leadership. A leader’s relevant skill matters, but personality and luck can also influence the result. Preserving a capable person’s safety may be more important than extracting one more risky success from them.

A decision procedure for every crisis
Use the following sequence whenever a situation appears. It is designed to prevent an attractive button from hiding a dangerous cost.
- Read the situation for what is actually at stake. Identify whether the immediate danger is food, livestock, wealth, clan mood, diplomatic relations, a leader’s safety or a longer story chain. If several are threatened, decide which loss would be hardest to repair.
- Separate the visible outcome from the possible follow-up. Ask whether an option ends the crisis, merely postpones it or creates a new event. The manual explicitly warns that choices can defer consequences or produce further events (official manual).
- Check the calendar before spending an action. Actions advance time, and events can occur as time passes. Note whether the clan should be sowing or reaping before you choose an activity that consumes a turn.
- Match the leader to the real task. Look beyond the first name or the highest displayed number. Choose the ability the situation calls for, then consider traits, safety and the Circle’s advice.
- Price the downside. Decide what you can afford to lose if the attempt fails. If losing livestock would trigger a food crisis, or losing a leader would remove your only specialist, select a less exposed option even if its immediate reward is smaller.
- Use magic and other preparations when the stakes justify them. In combat, clan magic can provide a bonus and available rituals may help. Do not spend scarce resources automatically; spend them when preventing the likely loss is worth the cost.
- After resolving the event, inspect the new state. Check stores, livestock, wealth, mood, relations and leader availability. A successful-looking response can still create a follow-up obligation.
How to choose a leader without following the ranking blindly
When the game presents candidates, the list may make the highest relevant skill look like the obvious answer. The manual specifically says that the person with the highest displayed skill may not be the wisest choice in special circumstances (official manual).

Advisers are not neutral oracles. Their advice can be valuable, but the manual notes that advisers have their own agendas. Treat counsel as evidence to weigh alongside the situation and your reserves, not as an automatic command.
Time, seasons and the hidden cost of an action
Time is a resource because each action advances it and events may occur afterward. A response that consumes a turn can therefore have an agricultural cost even when the event itself appears unrelated.
- Before sowing: avoid committing the clan to activities that leave necessary agricultural work undone.
- Before reaping: preserve the people and time required to bring in the harvest.
- During an existing shortage: prefer actions that stabilise food and livestock over speculative gains.
- When a story offers to wait: compare the time cost with the danger of allowing another event to occur.
The manual specifically warns against raiding when the clan should be sowing or reaping (official manual). This is not a universal ban on raiding; it is a reminder to judge the action against the agricultural cycle instead of viewing it in isolation.

Combat crises: choose the loss you can survive
Combat is a set of trade-offs, not a guarantee attached to a particular button. The manual describes approaches that differ in casualty risk, ferocity and overall prospects of victory. The opposing force, leader qualifications, numbers, magic, blessings, circumstances and luck all affect the result (official manual).
Identify the military objective
First decide whether you must win immediately, protect people, preserve strength or create an opportunity to fight later. A clan facing an existential threat may rationally accept casualties that would be unacceptable in a minor dispute. Conversely, spending your best fighters to achieve a marginal gain can create a larger vulnerability.
Understand the broad combat approaches

Choose and prepare the war leader
Combat is the war leader’s primary qualification, while Leadership and deity are also important according to the manual. Use that hierarchy as a starting point, not as an automatic ranking. A slightly less combat-focused leader may be preferable if their leadership, religious suitability, personality or survival is crucial to the wider clan.
Spend magic deliberately
Spending clan magic can give a combat bonus, and available rituals may help. Reserve this expenditure for battles where the bonus changes the consequences you can tolerate. If the clan is already depleted, the value of avoiding casualties may exceed the value of saving magic for a hypothetical later fight.

Read the result in context
A victory can still leave the clan weakened, while a loss may be survivable if food, livestock and leadership remain intact. After combat, check the actual casualties and resource changes before deciding whether the campaign is in danger.

The game’s situations are not limited to battles. The App Store description highlights crises ranging from marauding dinosaurs to diplomatic requests (App Store listing). The exact text and options vary, so use the stakes rather than a memorised script.
Threats to food or livestock
Prioritise the chain reaction. Losing a small amount may be tolerable if stores are strong; losing the animals or supplies that support the next agricultural cycle may not be. Compare a direct payment, a risky expedition and a delayed response by asking which one leaves the clan able to eat and work afterward.
Diplomatic requests
Estimate both the immediate cost and the relationship value. A generous response may improve relations but reduce wealth or supplies; a refusal may preserve reserves while creating a later diplomatic problem. Consider whether the requesting group is likely to matter to the clan’s next decisions, and whether you can afford to keep the relationship warm.

Exploration can trade time and leader safety for information or opportunity. Send someone suited to the task, avoid spending a crucial agricultural turn casually, and decide in advance what level of danger is acceptable. If the potential reward is not needed, preserving the leader may be the stronger choice.

Clan mood and internal stability
A response that protects wealth but damages morale can create a different crisis later. Include mood, relations and the availability of trusted leaders in the stakes you list before choosing. Internal stability is a resource even when the event screen does not display a direct price.
What to do after a failure
A poor result is information about the clan’s new position, not proof that the campaign is over. The manual says few situations are so critical that a negative outcome dooms the clan, and notes that failure at one part of a story does not usually doom an entire ritual (official manual).
- Measure the actual damage. Record lost food, livestock, wealth, fighters, mood, relations and leader availability. Do not react to the narrative tone before checking the mechanical consequences.
- Identify the next vulnerability. A food loss may make the next harvest decisive; an injured specialist may change who can lead the next event; a diplomatic failure may require a later repair.
- Stabilise before taking another gamble. Rebuild the reserve that was damaged. If food fell, protect the agricultural cycle; if leadership was lost, avoid a crisis that requires the missing expertise.
- Prepare for a follow-up story. A deferred consequence is easier to handle when you know which resource it could threaten. Keep enough flexibility to answer it without repeating the original mistake.
- Continue unless the clan’s position truly collapses. One failed scene rarely determines the whole campaign. Preserve what remains and make the next decision from the new state.
Worked decision examples
These examples illustrate the documented decision method; they are not guaranteed solutions to a particular scene.
A marauding dinosaur with a weak food reserve
Start by listing the stakes: livestock, food, fighter safety and time. If the clan is near a food shortfall, a high-casualty attack may create a larger problem even if it offers the best chance of killing the threat. Compare a cautious defence, waiting for a better opportunity and a risky offensive response. Select a leader whose combat qualification fits the task, check whether losing that person would leave the clan helpless, and use magic only if preventing the likely loss justifies the expenditure. Afterward, inspect livestock and food rather than assuming that driving the animal away ended the danger.
A diplomatic request when wealth is low
Identify whether the request affects relations, wealth, food or a future alliance. A generous answer may be strategically sound if it prevents a costly later conflict, but it may be reckless if paying now leaves no reserve for agriculture. Ask advisers for their views while remembering their agendas, then choose the response whose downside the clan can absorb. If the choice postpones the issue, reserve time and resources for the next event instead of treating the request as finished.
Common mistakes that make random events worse
- Searching for a universal safe option: the game’s branching situations mean that a response can trade one problem for another.
- Always choosing the top-ranked leader: displayed skill is not the only factor; special circumstances can make another candidate wiser.
- Ignoring the season: an action that advances time can interfere with sowing or reaping.
- Spending magic reflexively: a bonus is useful only when it changes a consequence worth avoiding.
- Treating advisers as impartial: their recommendations can help, but they have personal agendas.
- Calling a campaign lost after one failure: assess the actual damage and the next vulnerability first.
- Assuming guides provide verified odds: player-created material can be useful, but a directory does not validate every recommendation.
How much outside guidance can tell you
The official manual is the strongest source for the general mechanics described here. The Steam Community maintains a directory of player-created guides covering food, combat, exploration and other systems (Steam Community guides), but the directory page does not verify each guide’s detailed recommendations. Use those guides as optional perspectives, and distinguish a player’s anecdote from a documented rule.
There is no independent statistical study in the cited material establishing event probabilities, success odds or an optimal response for every crisis. Avoid claims such as “this option always works” or precise percentage predictions unless a source provides them. The useful, transferable skill is evaluating stakes, timing, leader fit and recoverability.

- What exactly can be lost: food, livestock, wealth, mood, relations, a leader or future time?
- Does this choice end the situation, defer it or trigger another event?
- Which skill and personality fit the task, and can the clan spare that leader?
- What do the advisers recommend, and what agendas might influence them?
- What season is it, and will this action interfere with sowing or reaping?
- Can the clan absorb the worst plausible result without losing its next source of food or leadership?
- Would magic, a ritual or a less aggressive approach reduce a loss that matters?
- After the result, which reserve or relationship needs attention first?
Use the checklist to make the decision visible before you click. The game still includes uncertainty and luck, but a clan with reserves, appropriate leaders and a clear sense of timing can turn many apparently random events into manageable risks.
