You do not submit user-generated content (UGC) directly to Google as a contributor. If you own or manage the website where the content appears, you can make its public pages discoverable and request crawling: use URL Inspection for a few URLs or a sitemap for many. Neither method guarantees crawling or inclusion in Search.
Make sure the page is eligible to appear in Google Search
Before requesting discovery, publish the UGC page at a stable, public URL. Google must be able to access and understand the page, and the content must comply with its Search policies. Check these basics:
- Googlebot is not blocked from crawling the URL.
- The page returns HTTP 200 rather than an error or redirect to an unrelated page.
- The page contains content that can be indexed.
- The page follows Google’s technical requirements and spam policies.
These conditions make a page eligible for consideration; they do not guarantee indexing. Google says, “Just because your page meets these requirements doesn’t mean that it will be indexed; indexing isn’t guaranteed.”
Choose a crawl-request method based on how many pages you have
| Method | Best for | Requirements and limits | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| URL Inspection | A few new or updated URLs | You need owner or full-user access to the relevant Search Console property. Requests are subject to a quota. | Fast crawling or indexing |
| Sitemap | Many URLs, a new website, or a site move | Submit through Search Console or its API, reference it in robots.txt, or submit an RSS or Atom feed. Each sitemap can contain no more than 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. | That Google downloads the sitemap, crawls every URL, or indexes every page |
A crawl request asks Google to revisit a URL; a sitemap helps Google discover URLs. Neither is a command to add pages to Search results.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Request crawling for a few UGC pages with URL Inspection
- Open Search Console and select the property that contains the page. You must be an owner or full user of that property.
- Enter the exact page URL in the URL Inspection search bar.
- Review the inspection result. If the page is accessible and eligible, choose the option to request indexing.
- Allow time for Google to recrawl. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks. Requests are limited, and submitting the same URL repeatedly does not make Google crawl it faster.
Google cautions that “Requesting a crawl does not guarantee that inclusion in search results will happen instantly or even at all.”
Use a sitemap to help Google find many UGC pages
For a forum, community site, or other property publishing many pages, keep a sitemap of the URLs you want Google to discover. Include each page’s preferred canonical URL, update the sitemap as pages are added or changed, and submit it using one of Google’s supported routes:

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- Submit the sitemap in Search Console.
- Submit it through the Search Console API.
- Reference the sitemap in your site’s robots.txt file.
- Submit an RSS or Atom feed as a sitemap.
Google’s sitemap limit is 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per file. Split a larger set of URLs across multiple sitemap files. A sitemap is a discovery hint, not a guarantee that Google will fetch it or crawl and index every listed page. See Google’s sitemap guidance for the supported format and submission details.

Making UGC discoverable also means managing what it contains. Google recommends marking links contributed in comments and forum posts with rel="ugc". For example:
<a href="https://example.com" rel="ugc">Link text</a>
Google describes user-generated spam as spammy content added through a channel intended for user content, often without the site owner’s awareness. Examples include spam accounts, forum posts, blog comments, and uploaded files. User content is not automatically a policy violation; assess its quality, purpose, and how it is integrated into your site. Review Google’s user-generated spam policy and moderate spam-prone areas before exposing their pages to Search.

If a page should not appear in Search, choose a control that matches the reason:

- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
- Private content: restrict access, such as with password protection. Do not rely on a public URL being hard to guess.
- Content that should remain accessible but not appear in Search: use a
noindexdirective. Google must be able to crawl the page to read it, so do not block it in robots.txt while relying onnoindex. - Non-HTML files such as PDFs: use the
X-Robots-TagHTTP response header when a noindex directive is needed. - Content that should not remain available: remove it from the site.
Robots.txt is not a supported way to specify noindex. Blocking a page there can prevent Google from seeing its noindex instruction. Google explains these options in its guide to controlling content shared on Search.
