Use Claude to make study questions and clarify difficult ideas, but try to answer before you reveal its help. Then check the explanation against your course materials and revisit anything you missed in a later session. This approach puts retrieval practice and spaced review at the center; Anthropic’s documentation describes Claude’s study features, but does not establish that using Claude itself improves learning outcomes.

What Claude can do for studying

Anthropic describes Claude as a tool students can use to generate practice questions, explain concepts, create study guides or flashcards, and organize course materials. Its Learning mode is intended to guide reasoning through questions and concepts rather than simply provide an answer. These are vendor descriptions of features and intended use, not independent evidence that the features improve test performance. Access and availability can depend on your account, institution, and current product configuration. Anthropic’s education announcement and its university education FAQ describe these capabilities and conditions.

Claude is most useful here as a question writer and explanation partner—not as the authority on what your course teaches. Your syllabus, lecture notes, assigned readings, textbook, and instructor guidance remain the reference points.

Why start by answering from memory?

A review by Dunlosky and colleagues assessed ten commonly used learning techniques and rated practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility strategies. Practice testing means trying to retrieve information rather than merely rereading it; distributed practice means returning to material across separate sessions. The review also notes that results depend on factors such as the learner, material, and assessment conditions, so these techniques are not a guarantee of a particular grade. See the 2013 review and the Association for Psychological Science summary.

That evidence concerns learning methods, not Claude. It supports the structure of the workflow below, but does not show that Claude-assisted study causes better learning outcomes.

Set up Claude around your course materials

Start with the sources your class actually uses: the syllabus, lecture notes, readings, or instructor-provided study materials. If Projects are available to your account, you can keep related chats, uploaded knowledge, and instructions together in one workspace. Anthropic’s Projects documentation explains the feature; exact access and capacity may depend on the plan and current configuration.

Use only the course materials I provide for claims about this class. If you infer something that is not stated in those materials, label it as an inference. Ask me one question at a time. Do not show the answer until I have tried.

This instruction can help keep the session focused, but it does not make every generated question or explanation correct. Verify course-specific claims in the original material.

Run a study session: question, retrieve, check, repair

  1. Choose a bounded topic. Pick a lecture, chapter, or group of related concepts rather than asking Claude to quiz you on an entire course at once.
  2. Ask for a diagnostic quiz. Request a short set of questions that require you to explain, apply, compare, or solve—not only recognize terms. Anthropic’s university guidance describes generating practice questions and step-by-step explanations as student use cases.
  3. Attempt each answer before seeing help. Hide the answer if one is displayed, or ask Claude to give one question at a time. Write or say your answer from memory. Mark answers you miss or feel unsure about.
  4. Check against the course source. Compare your answer with the assigned reading, notes, or textbook. Do not memorize a Claude-generated explanation until you have checked it against a reliable course source.
  5. Repair one gap at a time. For a missed question, ask for a hint or a simpler explanation and request the relevant supporting passage or topic from your uploaded material. Then close the explanation and restate the idea in your own words.
  6. Test the gap again. Ask Claude for a new question about the point you missed. Attempt it without looking at the prior explanation, then verify it against the source.

The review evidence supports retrieval practice, but does not prescribe one universal quiz length or format. Match the questions to the kind of thinking your course requires.

Return to weak topics in later sessions

Do not confine review to one long sitting. Schedule another attempt later, using the exam date and how well you can recall the material to decide when to return. The cited review supports distributed practice; it does not establish one ideal interval that fits every learner or course.

For a simple offline option, make flashcards from blank index cards: put a question or prompt on one side and an answer or explanation on the other. Try to recall the answer before turning the card over, and bring difficult cards back in later sessions. The benefit comes from how you use the cards, not from a particular card brand.

Adapt practice to the exam and academic rules

When feasible, ask questions in a format that resembles the actual assessment. If your class requires essay arguments, practice explaining and supporting claims; if it tests problem-solving, work through problems rather than relying only on vocabulary prompts. Keep instructor guidance and assigned materials central, and do not treat a generated quiz as an authoritative exam key.

Follow your school’s academic-integrity rules. Anthropic’s university FAQ advises students not to use Claude to complete work that is expected to be done independently; institutional policies and customizations can vary. Using Claude for practice is not permission to submit AI-completed work as your own.

What this workflow can—and cannot—promise

Claude can help produce prompts, explanations, and organized study materials, while you supply the effortful recall and source-checking. Evidence reviews support practice testing and distributed practice as useful methods, but they do not establish a numerical grade increase, a guaranteed result, or a learning benefit caused specifically by Claude. Treat its output as a draft aid, and let the course material settle factual disagreements.
