The safest way to stress-test a replacement graphics card is to use a supported, looped graphics benchmark at stock settings, keep the first run bounded, and watch the system continuously. A completed run without artifacts, hangs, crashes, or an overheating shutdown is reassuring for that workload and duration; it is not a guarantee that the card will work in every game or remain reliable indefinitely. Stop immediately when serious symptoms appear, then check drivers, system stability, power delivery, and installation before deciding the card is defective.
What a graphics-card stress test actually proves
A stress test deliberately keeps the GPU busy so faults that may not appear during a desktop session become easier to observe. It is a diagnostic load, not a certification of the card. UL’s guidance identifies crashes, hangs, visual artifacts, and shutdowns caused by overheating as signs that may point to reliability, stability, or cooling problems.
The result is always limited to the exact hardware, software, settings, workload, and time tested. A pass means the card completed that particular test without an observed error. It does not prove that every game, rendering application, driver version, or power state will behave the same way. Conversely, a failed run does not automatically mean the GPU silicon is bad: insufficient video memory, a driver crash, general system instability, overclocking, or inadequate power can all stop a benchmark.

Why test after a replacement
A replacement card changes more than the GPU itself. It can alter power demand, driver behavior, connector loading, airflow, and the way the system responds to high graphics workloads. UL describes stress testing as especially appropriate after buying or building a PC, upgrading a graphics card, or overclocking a GPU. Running a controlled check before relying on the replacement for work or gaming gives you a repeatable baseline and a record of what happened.

Prepare the system before applying a heavy load
Verify the physical installation
- Shut the computer down fully and follow the graphics-card and system-manual instructions for seating the card.
- Confirm that the card’s auxiliary power plugs are fully inserted and that no connector is under unusual strain.
- Make sure the card is held securely in the expansion slot and that case airflow paths are not blocked by loose cables or panels.
- Check that the display cable is connected to the replacement card’s output rather than an unintended motherboard output.
Do not begin a high-load test while the card is only partly seated or while a power lead is loose. A benchmark can expose an installation problem, but repeatedly loading a questionable connection makes diagnosis harder and can create avoidable interruptions.
Return the GPU to known settings
Use the card’s default clock, voltage, power-limit, and fan settings for the first test. Disable experimental overclocks and undervolts, including profiles that load automatically with the operating system. UL specifically recommends returning overclock settings to stock when a stress test fails. A stock run establishes whether the replacement is stable before you investigate performance tuning.
Close avoidable variables
- Save work and close applications that could compete for graphics memory or CPU time.
- Allow the operating system to finish pending restarts and driver installations before testing.
- Use the manufacturer’s model-level specifications for temperature and power expectations. There is no single temperature cutoff that is safe for every graphics card.
- Keep a way to stop the test quickly, such as the benchmark’s stop control or the operating system’s normal shutdown command.
Install or retain a stable graphics driver appropriate for the card and operating system. If the test later fails, driver problems become one of the first checks rather than a hidden variable.
Choose a benchmark that fits the card and computer
Select a GPU graphics stress test or looped benchmark that explicitly supports your operating system, graphics architecture, and available video memory. Read the current system requirements before starting. UL warns that a test may fail when the computer does not have enough video memory; that failure alone is not proof of an unstable card.

Using 3DMark’s documented stress-test setting
3DMark is one example of a benchmark with a dedicated stress-test screen. UL’s product information listed version 2.32.8897, dated August 3, 2026, when reviewed. The software offers multiple tests for different classes of hardware, so choose the one whose requirements match the replacement card and the rest of the system rather than selecting a test solely because it is demanding.
UL documents a default run of 20 loops that takes about 20 minutes. That is a product setting designed to expose significant stability or cooling problems; it is not a universal safety limit, a guarantee that the card cannot be damaged, or a requirement that every card must endure the same duration. A shorter first check is reasonable when you are validating an uncertain installation, while a longer or repeated workload should be attempted only after the system behaves normally and the manufacturer’s guidance permits it.
| Selection question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Does the test support the operating system? | Check the benchmark’s current OS requirements. | An unsupported environment can fail for software reasons before the GPU is meaningfully tested. |
| Does it support the GPU? | Confirm the card’s graphics API, architecture, and feature requirements. | A test designed for different hardware may produce an invalid result. |
| Is there enough video memory? | Compare the test’s stated memory requirement with the card’s available VRAM. | UL notes that insufficient video memory can prevent completion without demonstrating hardware instability. |
| Is the workload relevant? | Prefer a graphics test that exercises the type of rendering you need to validate. | Repeatability and relevance make a result more useful than a large score from an unsuitable test. |
A bounded, low-risk stress-test procedure
- Record the baseline. Note the card model, driver version, stock settings, and any manufacturer-specified operating limits. Record the system’s normal idle behavior so a later change is easier to identify.
- Confirm the requirements. Open the benchmark’s requirements page or in-app information and verify the operating system, GPU support, and VRAM requirement. Resolve a mismatch before running the load.
- Set stock configuration. Turn off GPU overclocking and undervolting profiles. Leave the card on its default power and fan behavior for this diagnostic pass.
- Start monitoring first. Open the monitoring panel supplied by the card or system software, or another trusted monitor that reports temperature, clock behavior, fan activity, power, and driver errors. Watch the screen rather than starting the test and walking away.
- Run one controlled pass. Start the selected GPU stress test with its documented default loop count or a short initial run. For 3DMark, UL’s documented default is 20 loops and approximately 20 minutes. Treat that figure as a reference for this product, not as a universal prescription.
- Observe the entire run. Look for rendering errors, flickering shapes, unexpected colors, a frozen image, a driver reset, a reboot, or a shutdown. Note the loop or elapsed time at which anything occurs.
- Stop for warning signs. Use the benchmark’s stop control when possible. If the system hangs or shuts down, do not immediately start the same test again; allow the machine to cool and move to diagnosis.
- Save the result. Keep the completion status, run duration, driver version, and relevant observations. A repeatable record is more useful than a single score without conditions.
Never leave an uncertain system running unattended simply to reach a round number of minutes. The purpose of a bounded run is to gather evidence while preserving a clear opportunity to stop.
What to monitor while the test runs
| Observation | What it can indicate | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| Clean rendering with normal fan and clock behavior | The card is handling this workload under the current settings. | Allow the bounded run to finish and record the conditions. |
| Colored blocks, sparkles, flashing polygons, missing textures, or other visual artifacts | Possible graphics, memory, driver, power, or cooling trouble. | Stop the test and investigate rather than accepting the result as normal. |
| Frozen image or unresponsive desktop | A hang caused by the driver, system, power delivery, or hardware. | Stop waiting for a recovery loop; after the system is safe, check drivers, stock settings, and connections. |
| Application crash or driver reset | Driver instability or broader system instability is possible. | Record the event and troubleshoot software and system stability before retesting. |
| Unexpected reboot or display loss | Power delivery, protection behavior, driver failure, or another system fault. | End the run and inspect PSU capacity and all power connections. |
| Overheating shutdown | The system’s protection response or a cooling problem. | Do not repeat the same load until cooling and the card maker’s specifications have been checked. |
Do not apply a generic “safe” temperature number from another GPU model. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one cutoff that applies to every card. Use the exact model’s specifications, and treat an overheating shutdown as a reason to stop.

When to stop immediately
Stop the benchmark if you see persistent or new visual artifacts, the application or operating system hangs, the computer crashes or reboots, the display becomes corrupted, or the system shuts down because of overheating. UL treats crashes, hangs, artifacts, and overheating shutdowns as possible indicators of reliability, stability, or cooling issues. Continuing to force the same load can destroy the distinction between the original problem and damage caused by an unresolved installation or power fault.
One isolated driver recovery is not proof that the card is defective, but it is still a recorded failure of that workload. Let the system return to a stable state, then troubleshoot methodically instead of raising the test duration or changing several settings at once.
Diagnose a failed or incomplete run
1. Check whether the test was eligible to run
Review the benchmark’s operating-system, GPU, and VRAM requirements. If the system does not meet them, choose a supported test. An insufficient-memory failure is a compatibility result, not a diagnosis of bad GPU hardware.

UL identifies driver crashes as one of the most common reasons a 3DMark stress test fails before the end. Confirm that the installed driver supports the replacement card and operating system, complete any required restart, and retest at stock settings. Avoid introducing an overclock while trying to isolate a driver problem.

3. Remove overclocking from the equation
Return GPU clocks, voltage, memory timing, and power-limit changes to defaults. If the same benchmark completes at stock settings but fails with a custom profile, the profile is the immediate suspect; do not describe that result as proof that the replacement card is faulty.
4. Investigate general system instability
A benchmark can expose instability outside the graphics card, including memory, processor, operating-system, or driver interactions. Check whether the computer also crashes during ordinary use or other workloads. Change one variable at a time and keep notes so that a later pass has a clear cause-and-effect relationship.
5. Verify power delivery
Power delivery can produce crashes, hangs, reboots, or display corruption. AMD’s PSU troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the power supply is sufficient for the total system and that its connections are secure when symptoms suggest a PSU issue. Compare the supply’s output with the card and system requirements, and inspect every relevant power connection. A replacement PSU is not part of a normal stress test; it is a separate repair decision if the evidence points there.
6. Recheck the physical installation
After the system is powered down, confirm that the card remains fully seated and that power connectors have not loosened. Check airflow and fan operation against the exact card’s documentation. Do not repeatedly run an overheating or artifact-producing test while a seating, cooling, or cable problem remains unresolved.

How to interpret a pass
A completed run with no visible errors is reassuring for the selected workload, the observed duration, and the current driver and settings. It supports using the card normally while you continue to watch for problems in the applications that matter to you. It does not certify long-term reliability or guarantee every game and graphics program.
If you need stronger confidence, favor repeatability over a single impressive score. Repeat the same supported test under the same stock conditions only after the first run is clean, then try a relevant real-world workload such as the game or application for which the card was installed. Compare whether the symptoms recur, not merely whether a numerical score is high.
| Outcome | Reasonable conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Completes cleanly at stock settings | No problem was observed in that workload and time window. | Keep the record and validate the applications you actually use. |
| Fails because requirements are unmet | The test is unsuitable for this system. | Choose a supported benchmark; do not label the card defective from this result. |
| Fails with a driver crash or hang | Software or general system instability remains possible. | Check the driver, operating system, stock settings, and other system components. |
| Fails with artifacts or display corruption | Graphics, memory, cooling, power, or driver trouble is possible. | Stop, document the symptom, and troubleshoot before any repeat run. |
| Fails repeatedly after checks | The problem is persistent enough to escalate. | Use the exact card’s warranty or seller support process. |
When a second test is useful
There is no requirement to collect a large collection of benchmark scores. If you compare tests, choose them by four criteria:
- Repeatability: Can you run the same test again with the same settings and obtain the same behavior?
- Relevance: Does the workload resemble the games, rendering, compute, or video tasks you need to validate?
- Requirements: Does the test officially support the operating system, GPU, and available VRAM?
- Symptoms: Does the test reproduce the actual artifact, crash, or display problem rather than merely producing a higher load?
UL provides multiple tests for different hardware classes and advises selecting one suited to the system. A supported, repeatable test that reproduces the real problem is more informative than an unsuitable benchmark that simply runs hot.
Warranty and escalation
If the card continues to artifact, crash, or fail supported tests after you have checked drivers, stock settings, installation, cooling, and power, stop stress-testing and contact the manufacturer or seller. Give them the exact model and serial information, purchase region, driver version, test name, settings, and a concise description of the failure. Preserve screenshots or photographs of artifacts when safe to do so.
Warranty terms depend on the exact brand, model, seller, and country. The NVIDIA customer-care and repair-or-replacement terms cited for NVIDIA-branded Founders Edition products apply in the United States context described on that page; they should not be generalized to board-partner cards or other regions. Use the warranty document for your own card and market.
Practical stop-and-check checklist
Before the run
- Card seated according to the manuals.
- All required power connectors fully inserted.
- Airflow and fans unobstructed.
- Supported benchmark and sufficient VRAM confirmed.
- GPU settings returned to stock.
- Stable driver installed and restart completed.
- Monitoring visible and important work saved.
During the run
- Remain present for the bounded test.
- Watch for artifacts, hangs, crashes, reboots, display corruption, and overheating shutdowns.
- Record the elapsed time, loop number, driver, and settings if anything unusual occurs.
- Stop rather than extending the run when a warning sign appears.
After a clean run
- Save the completion result and conditions.
- Validate the game or application that motivated the replacement.
- Keep stock settings until the replacement has a reliable baseline.
- Investigate any later symptom instead of assuming the earlier pass proves universal stability.
The safest decision rule
Use a supported benchmark, start at stock settings, run a bounded observation such as 3DMark’s documented 20-loop, approximately 20-minute default, and stop at the first artifact, hang, crash, reboot, display corruption, or overheating shutdown. A clean result is useful evidence, not a guarantee. A failed result is a prompt to check requirements, drivers, system stability, installation, cooling, and power before blaming the replacement GPU. Persistent failures after those checks belong with the exact manufacturer or seller warranty process.
