You can watch a Blu-ray or DVD collection on televisions, phones, tablets and computers without inserting a disc each time by converting or remuxing the discs into media files, storing those files in a home media-server library, and playing them through compatible client apps. The practical target is a well-organized MKV or MP4 library, not a collection of full disc images: Plex apps do not support ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS or BDMV structures, while Jellyfin says disc images are unsupported and recommends MKV remuxes or extracted VIDEO_TS/BDMV folders.
The complete setup has five parts: a computer and optical drive that can read your discs, software that can create usable files, enough storage, server software such as Jellyfin or Plex, and a client app or browser on each screen. Whether a device plays a file directly or the server has to transcode it depends on the container, video and audio codecs, bitrate, resolution and subtitle format.
What “streaming your discs” actually means
A media server does not usually stream data straight from a DVD or Blu-ray. Instead, you read each disc on a computer, create a movie file or folder, place it in a library, and let the server deliver that file over your home network. A TV, phone, tablet or computer then opens the title in a client application.

What you need before you begin
- A computer with an optical drive. The drive must read the format you own. A DVD drive cannot read Blu-ray media. If the computer lacks an internal drive, an external Blu-ray drive is a practical option, but compatibility varies by operating system and disc format. Ordinary Blu-ray support does not establish UHD Blu-ray ripping capability.
- Disc-reading and conversion software. HandBrake documents DVD and Blu-ray as supported source types, but it is a transcoder rather than a copy-protection bypass tool.
- Storage. Use a stable folder on the computer, a dedicated server, or a NAS. Required capacity depends on how many discs you have and whether you preserve streams or create compressed versions; no universal capacity estimate is reliable.
- Media-server software. Jellyfin and Plex can index a movie library and provide playback clients. Plex lists an everyday computer, a dedicated computer, or a compatible NAS as possible server platforms.
- Client devices. Install a supported app on each television, phone, tablet or computer, or use a browser when that is the available client. App availability and codec support vary by device, so test every screen you intend to use.
- A network connection. All devices need to reach the server. Wired networking can be useful for a stationary server or television, while wireless performance depends on the local environment and the file being played.
Step 1: Read a disc on a computer
Match the drive to the disc
Check the label on every disc and confirm that the optical drive supports that format. DVD, standard Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray are not interchangeable requirements. For a computer without a built-in drive, choose an external Blu-ray drive whose operating-system support and exact media compatibility are documented by its manufacturer. Do not assume that a drive advertised for Blu-ray can read or process UHD Blu-ray media.
Understand what HandBrake can and cannot do
HandBrake’s source-format documentation lists DVD and Blu-ray among its supported sources: HandBrake supported sources. Its overview states, “HandBrake does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind,” and explains that protected disc folders cannot simply be copied without special software: HandBrake overview.
That limitation is important operationally. If a disc is protected, HandBrake may not be able to open it directly. This article does not provide instructions for bypassing protection. Use only material you own or have the right to copy, and check the law that applies where you live.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStep 2: Choose between preserving and converting
There are two broad file-making approaches. A remux changes the container while leaving the encoded video and audio streams intact. A transcode decodes and re-encodes those streams, producing a new file that may be easier for devices to play but is no longer the exact original stream.

| Approach | What changes | What stays from the source | When it is useful | Limits established by the available documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remux to MKV | The container is changed; the streams are not intentionally re-encoded. | Video and audio streams can be preserved. | Keeping high fidelity while presenting the movie in a media-server-friendly container. | Device compatibility still depends on the codecs, bitrate, resolution, audio and subtitles inside the MKV. |
| Extract VIDEO_TS or BDMV | The disc structure is copied into folders. | Disc files and structure are retained. | Jellyfin’s Movies documentation lists these folder structures as supported library content. | Full disc structures are not a dependable cross-device target; Plex apps reject VIDEO_TS and BDMV structures. |
| Transcode to MP4, MKV or WebM | Video and/or audio is re-encoded and placed in a common container. | Only the newly encoded representation is retained. | Making a file that more client devices can decode directly. | Re-encoding changes the media and does not guarantee direct play on every device. |
Jellyfin recommends remuxing disc images into MKV or extracting them into VIDEO_TS/BDMV folders for its Movies library. Its documentation describes common MP4 and MKV files as well as those folder structures, but says ISO support is unsupported: Jellyfin Movies documentation. Plex instead recommends converting disc images to common media formats because its apps do not support ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS or BDMV: Plex disc-image support article.
Do not treat “remux” and “transcode” as interchangeable terms. Remuxing can preserve the existing streams, while transcoding creates new streams. The documentation establishes the workflow choices but does not provide a controlled quality, size or compatibility comparison, so select based on your own storage and device requirements.
Step 3: Create a repeatable movie-file workflow
- Insert the disc and open it in your authorized software. Confirm that the computer and drive can read the source. If the disc is protected, stop rather than trying to defeat protection with an unsupported method.
- Choose the output strategy. Use an MKV remux or an extracted structure when preserving source streams matters and the target server can index it. Use HandBrake to create MP4, MKV or WebM when you need a newly encoded file and accept the re-encoding trade-off.
- Select the main feature deliberately. Disc menus can contain multiple cuts, trailers and extras. Name the feature you want as the movie entry, and keep extras in a clearly identified location if your server should display them separately.
- Keep audio and subtitle choices intentional. Retain the languages and subtitle tracks you actually need, but remember that a subtitle format a client cannot display can trigger server transcoding later.
- Save to a temporary location first. Verify that the resulting file opens and contains the expected feature before moving it into the permanent library.
- Move the verified file into the library structure. Use consistent names and avoid changing files while the server is scanning them.
Step 4: Organize files so the server can identify them
Stable naming prevents duplicate entries and missing metadata. Follow the naming and organization guidance in Jellyfin’s Movies documentation, even if you ultimately use another server; the underlying principle is the same: one movie should have a clear folder and a filename that identifies the title and, when needed, its release year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA simple pattern is:
Movies/
Movie Title (Year)/
Movie Title (Year).mkv
For a converted file, replace the extension with the one you created. Keep alternate cuts or resolutions clearly named rather than placing several ambiguously named files in one folder. If you retain a VIDEO_TS or BDMV folder for Jellyfin, keep the complete structure together and place it under the movie’s folder. Do not use an ISO as your universal interchange format: Jellyfin marks disc-image support unsupported, and Plex apps do not support ISO-based playback.

Step 5: Install and configure the media server
Choose a server platform
Plex’s requirements documentation identifies everyday computers, dedicated computers and compatible NAS devices as possible server hosts: Plex Media Server Requirements. A computer is often the simplest starting point because it can also read discs and hold the first library. A NAS can centralize storage for a larger collection, but its suitability depends on the storage you choose and whether it can handle the transcoding workload created by your clients.
Compare Jellyfin and Plex for this workflow
| Consideration | Jellyfin | Plex |
|---|---|---|
| Documented movie formats | Movies documentation lists MP4, MKV, VIDEO_TS and BDMV; ISO is described as unsupported. | Plex apps do not support ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS or BDMV structures and recommend common media formats. |
| Best default target for cross-device playback | Common files such as MKV or MP4; Jellyfin specifically recommends MKV remuxes or extracted folders instead of disc images. | A common media file rather than a disc-image structure. |
| Server locations | Use a computer or other supported self-hosted installation according to the current Jellyfin documentation. | Plex documents everyday computers, dedicated computers and compatible NAS devices. |
| Client decision | Install a Jellyfin client where your screen supports one and verify that device’s formats. | Install a Plex client where your screen supports one and verify that device’s formats. |
| What the cited documentation does not establish | A complete current device-app matrix, pricing comparison or remote-access policy. | A complete current device-app matrix, pricing comparison or remote-access policy. |
This is a file-compatibility comparison, not a claim that one server is universally easier or better. Software features and client support can change, so check the current app listing and playback documentation for each device before committing a large collection.
Add the library
- Install the server on the computer or NAS you selected.
- Create a Movies library in the server’s administration interface.
- Point that library at the folder containing your organized movie directories.
- Run a scan and inspect several titles. Correct folder names, duplicate entries or wrong matches before adding the rest of the collection.
- Repeat the scan after moving or renaming files so the server’s index reflects the final structure.
Step 6: Install clients on every screen
Install the matching server client on each television, phone, tablet or computer that you plan to use. Where a dedicated app is unavailable, a supported web browser may be the alternative. Sign in or connect the client to the server, open the Movies library and play a title that you have already tested on the server.
Do not assume that success on one screen predicts success on another. A television may direct-play a file that a phone cannot, or a computer may support an audio codec that a particular TV does not. Record the result for each device: direct play, direct stream, or transcoding.

Direct Play, Direct Stream and Transcoding
Plex describes direct play as playback in which the client accepts the file’s container, bitrate, codecs and resolution. If the streams are compatible but the container is not, direct streaming can repackage the streams without changing them. If the client cannot handle the source, the server transcodes it: Plex Direct Play and Direct Stream. Its streaming overview explains that the server may make this decision based on the client and the available source: Plex streaming overview.
| Playback factor | Why it matters | Typical symptom when unsupported |
|---|---|---|
| Container | The client must recognize the file wrapper, such as MP4 or MKV. | The server repackages the streams or transcodes. |
| Video codec | The device needs hardware or software support for the encoded video. | Playback fails, stutters or triggers video transcoding. |
| Audio codec and channel layout | A screen may decode video but not the selected audio track. | Missing sound or audio transcoding. |
| Bitrate | The client and network must sustain the source rate. | Buffering or a lower-quality transcode. |
| Resolution | The screen and client must accept the source dimensions. | Scaling or video transcoding. |
| Subtitles | The client must render the selected subtitle format. | Subtitle burn-in or full transcoding when the client cannot display the track. |
How to diagnose a failed play
- Start playback and open the server’s playback or activity details.
- Check whether the session says direct play, direct stream or transcode.
- If it is transcoding, identify whether the trigger is video, audio, container, bitrate, resolution or subtitles.
- Try another audio or subtitle track. If playback changes when subtitles are disabled, the subtitle format is the likely trigger.
- For a recurring problem, create a second device-friendly version in a common container rather than replacing your preserved source automatically.
“Works on my TV” is therefore not a guarantee that the same file will direct-play on a phone. Compatibility is a property of the particular file-and-client pair.
Storage and server capacity decisions
There is no single correct storage size because the answer depends on the number of discs, whether you keep extras, how many audio and subtitle tracks you retain, and whether you remux or transcode. Make a list of the collection first, then leave room for future additions and temporary files created during conversion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A NAS or high-capacity storage device can separate the library from the computer used for disc reading. Plex’s requirements page specifically includes NAS devices as possible servers, but also warns that multiple users and playback requiring transcoding can demand more capable hardware. Treat that as a workload question, not a simple storage-capacity question: a large disk does not automatically provide enough processing capability for simultaneous transcodes.

Common problems and fixes
The server does not show a movie
- Confirm that the library points to the parent folder you intended.
- Check that the movie folder and filename are stable and clearly named.
- Run a library scan after moving the file.
- Open the file locally to confirm that the conversion completed rather than producing an empty or partial output.
A disc will not open in the conversion software
Verify that the drive reads the physical format and that the operating system sees the disc. If it is protected, HandBrake’s documentation says it does not circumvent protection; do not interpret a failed import as permission to bypass it.
Playback buffers or stops
- Check whether the session is transcoding and which stream caused it.
- Test a lower-bitrate or more widely supported file created from material you are authorized to convert.
- Try the same title on a computer near the server to distinguish a client issue from a network issue.
There is video but no audio
Select another audio track if the disc contains one, then inspect the session details. The client may support the video codec while requiring audio transcoding for the selected track.
Subtitles cause a transcode
Turn subtitles off briefly to confirm the cause. Plex documents that subtitles can lead to transcoding when the client cannot display the selected format. If subtitles are essential, retain a track your target clients can render or accept the server workload created by subtitle processing.
The movie’s menus are missing
That is expected with a normal movie-file workflow. Plex apps do not support full ISO, IMG, VIDEO_TS or BDMV disc structures, and Jellyfin recommends MKV remuxes or extracted folders rather than relying on disc images. A converted library is designed for selecting and playing titles, not reproducing every physical-disc menu.
Copy protection and the law
Software behavior and legal permission are separate questions. HandBrake states that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and advises users not to copy material they do not own or have the right to copy. Those statements do not determine what is lawful in every country. Exceptions for personal copies, format shifting, backups and circumvention differ by jurisdiction, and may also depend on the type of protection. Check the law where you live or obtain qualified local advice before making copies.
A practical rollout plan
- Pilot the workflow. Choose one DVD and one Blu-ray that you are authorized to copy.
- Test both output styles. Compare an MKV remux or supported folder with a HandBrake-created file on the actual screens you use.
- Choose the default. Use the format that balances preservation and client compatibility for your household; keep an alternate version only when a device genuinely requires it.
- Standardize folders. Apply one naming pattern before importing a large batch.
- Build the library. Add the folder to Jellyfin or Plex, scan it, and correct metadata while the collection is still small.
- Test every client. Check a movie with subtitles, one with multiple audio tracks and one high-bitrate source.
- Expand storage and server capacity deliberately. Add a NAS or larger storage only after you know how much content you retain and whether your clients require transcoding.
Final recommendation
For the broadest practical compatibility, turn each authorized disc into a clearly named MKV or MP4 file, store it in a structured Movies library, and test it through the client on every screen you care about. Preserve streams with an MKV remux when that is important and your clients can handle them; transcode to a common format when a device needs it. Expect some combinations of codecs, audio tracks, subtitles, containers and resolutions to require server transcoding, and treat protected discs and local copying laws as boundaries rather than technical obstacles to bypass.
