To stream World of Warcraft to Twitch and YouTube, use OBS Studio to capture the game, mix your microphone and desktop audio, encode one stable video feed, and send it either to both services through a multistream relay or through a separately configured dual-output workflow. The reliable baseline is CBR, a two-second keyframe interval where the platform requires it, a supported hardware encoder, and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain.
Set up the scene first, connect each account or stream key in Settings → Stream, run an unlisted or private test, and watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder indicators before going live. A relay is usually the simplest way to deliver one OBS output to both destinations; direct outputs provide more local control but consume additional upload and encoding capacity.
What OBS, Twitch, and YouTube each do
OBS Studio is the production and encoding application. It captures the WoW window, combines sources into scenes, mixes audio, applies overlays, and compresses the result for upload. Twitch and YouTube are separate delivery platforms: they receive the encoded stream, process it, and present it to viewers. Twitch’s own streaming FAQ describes the requirement as “a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video to the internet, also known as a video encoder,” and lists OBS among software encoders (Twitch, How do I stream FAQ).
You therefore configure OBS and each platform independently. A valid Twitch connection does not automatically authorize YouTube, and changing a YouTube stream key does not change the Twitch destination. Keep the keys private, because anyone who obtains one may be able to broadcast to that account.

Requirements for a single-PC WoW stream
- A current OBS Studio installation on the computer running WoW.
- A Twitch account, a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, or both.
- A stable wired or strong wireless upload connection. Your usable upload capacity must exceed the configured stream bitrate, with headroom for game traffic, voice chat, updates, and other devices.
- A microphone. A webcam, alerts, chat display, and other overlays are optional.
- A graphics processor with a supported hardware encoder when possible. OBS supports hardware paths such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and Apple VideoToolbox, depending on the operating system and installed hardware.
You do not normally need a capture card for a single-PC WoW setup: the game is rendered on the same computer that runs OBS, so OBS can capture its window directly. A capture card becomes relevant when the game runs on a different computer or console.
Choose how one OBS feed reaches two platforms
Cloud multistream relay
With a relay, OBS uploads one stream to a third-party distribution service. The service then forwards that feed to Twitch and YouTube. This avoids maintaining two local outputs and is the most straightforward architecture when your priority is a simple setup and one upload path.
- Advantages: one OBS destination, one local encoder session, one upload stream, and a single place to manage simultaneous delivery.
- Trade-offs: the relay becomes an additional service dependency, introduces another account and privacy consideration, and may limit how differently each platform can be configured.
- Failure isolation: a relay problem can affect both destinations at once, while a platform outage can still affect only that platform.
Direct dual-output workflow
A direct setup sends separate outputs from your local computer to Twitch and YouTube through an OBS-compatible second-output arrangement. It gives you more per-platform control, but the computer and connection must handle the combined workload.

- Trade-offs: additional encoder sessions or output processing may increase GPU usage, CPU usage, and heat; the upload requirement is roughly the sum of both output bitrates plus overhead.
- Failure isolation: one destination can fail while the other continues if the two outputs are configured independently.

For a first simultaneous broadcast, start with a relay or test one platform at a time. Move to direct outputs when you need distinct settings and your hardware and upload link remain stable under load.
Install OBS and let it establish a safe baseline
- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Project distribution for your operating system.
- Launch OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Let it test the computer and connection, then accept its starting canvas, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder choices as a baseline.
- Open Settings → Output and switch to Advanced only when you understand which stream fields you need to change. Keep recording settings separate from streaming settings.
- Open Settings → Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution to match the game or the layout you intend to produce. Choose an output resolution and frame rate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain rather than simply selecting the highest available value.
- Save a profile for this WoW setup. A profile stores stream and output settings; scenes and sources are managed in a scene collection. This makes it easier to keep a tested configuration while experimenting.
Build a World of Warcraft scene
Add Game Capture first
- In the Scenes panel, select +, name the scene something recognizable such as
WoW Live, and confirm. - In Sources, select + → Game Capture.
- Choose the mode that targets a specific window, then select the running WoW executable or window from the list. Start WoW before making this selection if it is not listed.
- Keep Game Capture above other visual sources in the source stack. Lock the source after positioning it so an accidental drag cannot move it during a broadcast.
Game Capture normally has less unnecessary desktop content than Display Capture. Use Display Capture only when Game Capture cannot hook the game or when you intentionally need to show the whole monitor. Display Capture can reveal private notifications, password managers, email, or unrelated windows, so disable notifications and inspect the preview before going live.
Add microphone and desktop audio
- In the Audio Mixer, select the microphone input under Settings → Audio, or add an Audio Input Capture source for a specific microphone.
- Use Desktop Audio for WoW and other system sound, or add an Audio Output Capture source if you need to target a particular device.
- Speak at your normal volume and watch the microphone meter. Peaks should remain below clipping; a clean signal is more useful than a constantly red meter.
- Play a short game sound and balance it against your voice. Headphones help prevent the microphone from re-capturing speakers.
Add optional presentation sources
Add a Video Capture Device for a webcam, Browser sources for alerts, and a chat panel only after the game and audio work. Browser sources can consume CPU or GPU resources; remove animated elements that cause encoding overload. Keep an emergency scene with only Game Capture and audio so you can simplify the broadcast quickly.

Protect information visible in WoW
- Hide or crop account names, email addresses, Discord notifications, authenticator prompts, and private guild or battletag information.
- Check the WoW chat box, quest text, mail, calendar, and add-on panels for personal data before each session.
- Never place a Twitch or YouTube stream key in a scene, browser source, screenshot, or public chat.
Connect Twitch and YouTube in OBS
Twitch
- Open Settings → Stream.
- Set the service to Twitch.
- Use Connect Account if available, or choose Use Stream Key and paste the key from Twitch’s creator dashboard.
- Select the intended Twitch server or leave the recommended server selected if OBS supplies one. Save and apply.
YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key, or use the account-connection option supported by your OBS version.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect the account or paste the YouTube stream key.
- Confirm the stream’s visibility and latency choices in YouTube Studio. Use an unlisted or private event for testing.
- Save and apply, then verify that the correct YouTube event is selected before starting the encoder.
If you use a relay, OBS connects to the relay instead. Add Twitch and YouTube destinations inside that service, follow its authorization flow, and verify that each destination points to the intended account. Do not assume that a relay’s destination settings inherit the title, category, privacy, or latency settings you chose in OBS.

Open Settings → Output → Streaming. The following baseline reflects OBS, Twitch, YouTube, and NVIDIA guidance, but platform limits and labels can change. Recheck the current platform documentation when you change resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Calculate a starting bitrate
Measure upload speed while the network is otherwise quiet, preferably at the same time of day you stream. Multiply the stable result by 0.75, then choose a stream bitrate below that figure. For example, a sustained 10,000 Kbps upload does not justify a 10,000 Kbps stream; a starting point around 7,500 Kbps leaves room for game traffic and fluctuations. If other people or devices share the connection, reserve their usage before calculating your stream budget.

NVIDIA’s 2025 Twitch settings discussion cites 6,000 Kbps as Twitch’s current maximum in that guide. Treat that number as a Twitch-specific, time-sensitive limit rather than a universal recommendation. YouTube publishes its own resolution-and-frame-rate bitrate tables; use the current YouTube table for the exact mode you select. When sending one feed through a relay, the OBS upload is one bitrate. When sending two direct feeds, add the output rates and leave additional headroom.
Choose resolution and frame rate deliberately
WoW contains large, detailed scenes and fast camera movement, but a stable 30 fps stream is preferable to a 60 fps stream that drops frames. Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard’s tested output. Increase resolution or frame rate only after a private test shows that rendering, encoding, and network indicators remain healthy. If YouTube and Twitch require different limits, a relay may force a common denominator; direct outputs permit separate platform settings when your system can handle them.
Run a private test before broadcasting publicly
- Start WoW and confirm that the Game Capture preview shows the correct character and window.
- Check that the microphone meter moves when you speak and never sits in the clipping range.
- Play game audio and verify that it appears in Desktop Audio without overpowering speech.
- Open the stream dashboard for Twitch and YouTube, set the event to unlisted or private, and start OBS.
- Watch the preview from another device or an incognito browser. Check lip sync, game-to-voice balance, resolution, frame rate, and chat.
- Leave the test running long enough to reveal rising dropped frames or encoder overload. A short burst can look healthy while a longer session fails.
- Stop the test, correct one issue at a time, and repeat before changing multiple settings.
Go live with a repeatable preflight
- Correct WoW window selected in Game Capture.
- Emergency scene available if overlays or browser sources misbehave.
- Microphone meter moving without clipping.
- Desktop or game audio audible and balanced.
- Webcam framing and lighting checked, if used.
- Private notifications and account information hidden.
- Correct Twitch channel and YouTube event selected.
- Stream key or account connection protected.
- Upload connection stable and no large downloads or cloud backups running.
- Private test completed successfully.
Start the stream from OBS, then confirm that both destination dashboards show an incoming signal. Keep the OBS status bar and each platform’s health indicator visible for the first several minutes.

Fix dropped frames, overload, and capture problems
Dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator
OBS uses the dropped-frame counter and connection indicator to show that the network is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This is primarily a connection or bitrate problem, not a WoW graphics setting.
- Change to another ingest server or recommended server.
- Lower the stream bitrate and test again.
- Stop competing uploads, cloud synchronization, downloads, and VPN traffic; ask other users to pause high-bandwidth activity.
- Test Twitch and YouTube separately. If one platform remains healthy while the other fails, the issue may be destination-specific. If both fail, investigate the local connection or relay.
- For a direct dual-output setup, reduce or pause one destination to confirm whether combined upload demand is the cause. A relay can reduce the local upload requirement to one feed.
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance places server selection and bitrate reduction before unrelated game changes. Do not increase bitrate to cure dropped frames.
Encoder overload or rendering lag
Encoding overload means the computer cannot produce frames fast enough. Update the graphics driver and select the hardware encoder recommended for the installed GPU. OBS explains that modern hardware encoders can provide good quality with minimal performance impact compared with CPU x264 encoding, but a GPU can still be saturated by WoW, multiple browser sources, and two output sessions.

- Close competing GPU- or CPU-heavy applications.
- Use one direct output or move distribution to a relay.
- Lower WoW’s graphics settings or cap its frame rate only after confirming that the encoder, not the network, is the bottleneck.
Black or frozen Game Capture
- Make sure WoW is running and the selected window matches the current executable.
- Recreate the Game Capture source if the game updated or changed between fullscreen and borderless modes.
- Run OBS and WoW with compatible permissions; inconsistent elevation can prevent capture.
- Use Display Capture temporarily, but inspect the entire desktop for private information before broadcasting.
Microphone clipping, echo, or delay
- Lower microphone gain or move the microphone farther away rather than allowing red peaks.
- Use headphones to prevent Desktop Audio from feeding back into the microphone.
- Check that only one microphone source is active; duplicate sources create echo.
- Use OBS’s audio monitoring and synchronization controls only after confirming the physical device and sample-rate settings.
One platform works and the other does not
For direct outputs, recheck the failed destination’s account authorization, stream key, service selection, server, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval. For a relay, inspect its destination status and reauthorize the affected platform. Run a single-platform test to distinguish a local OBS problem from a platform or relay problem.

These differences affect delivery, not the OBS scene itself. Build one clean WoW production, then choose whether the relay’s common feed or separate direct outputs best fit your bandwidth and control requirements.
