Use NGINX on a VPS in one of three ways: serve prerecorded MP4 files, generate HLS playlists and segments from MP4 or MOV files, or accept a live RTMP feed and publish it as HLS. MP4 is the simplest option for on-demand video. HLS is usually the better browser and device delivery format, while RTMP is primarily an ingest protocol that needs an additional module.
The correct setup depends on whether your source is live, whether viewers need adaptive bitrate playback, how much latency you can tolerate, and whether your VPS can sustain the outgoing traffic and any transcoding workload. The steps below keep those decisions separate so you do not install a live-streaming stack when ordinary file delivery is enough.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose the NGINX streaming architecture first
NGINX can deliver video without being a complete media platform. Its role may be a high-performance HTTP file server, an MP4 pseudo-streaming endpoint, an HLS origin, or an RTMP ingest and HLS packaging server. These are different workflows.
| Architecture | Input | Output to viewers | Best fit | Main costs and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Static MP4 | Completed MP4 files | One file over HTTP | Simple on-demand playback and downloads | Limited adaptive bitrate support; seeking depends on file metadata and player behavior |
| MP4 pseudo-streaming | Completed MP4 files | HTTP byte ranges and time-based requests | On-demand playback where viewers need to seek before the entire file downloads | Requires the MP4 module; poorly placed metadata can increase CPU, memory and disk I/O |
| HLS video on demand | MP4 or MOV files | An .m3u8 playlist and media fragments, commonly .ts |
Broad device compatibility and segmented delivery | More files and storage operations; fragment duration affects latency and request rate |
| Live RTMP to HLS | Live RTMP publisher, often a camera or encoder | HLS playlist and continuously updated fragments | Live channels and browser-friendly playback | Needs the additional RTMP module; transcoding and multiple renditions can consume substantial CPU and RAM |
When plain MP4 is enough
For a small library of prerecorded clips, put the files behind an HTTPS location and let NGINX serve them. This avoids packaging overhead and is usually the least expensive design. Add the MP4 module when a compatible player must request a time position rather than merely a byte range.

When to use HLS
HLS divides media into short fragments and publishes an index playlist. A player downloads the playlist, requests fragments as playback advances, and can switch between renditions when you provide more than one bitrate. NGINX’s HTTP HLS module supports H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio and serves playlists and fragments from MP4 or MOV media.
When live RTMP is involved
RTMP is commonly used between an encoder and the server. The RTMP module enables streaming formats including RTMP, HLS and DASH, but it is an additional module rather than a default NGINX feature. NGINX can package the incoming stream for HLS; it does not automatically choose codecs, create every adaptive rendition, or replace a full transcoding system.

Choose an operating system and package source
Use a currently supported Linux image such as a supported Ubuntu or Debian release. Install NGINX from a verified official package repository where practical. Official installation guidance covers importing the signing key and repository; distribution packages and module names vary, so do not assume that a package called nginx-module-rtmp exists on every release.
Install the base server with your distribution’s package manager, then confirm the build and loaded modules:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nginx
nginx -V 2>&1
On another distribution, use its supported package commands instead. The output of nginx -V shows compile-time options. If you need MP4 pseudo-streaming, look for --with-http_mp4_module. If it is absent, install a build that includes it or compile NGINX with that option.
Install the RTMP module only when you need live ingest
Check whether your distribution supplies a compatible dynamic RTMP module. If it does, install that package and load the resulting shared object near the top of the main configuration, before the events block:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
load_module /path/to/ngx_rtmp_module.so;
The path is distribution-specific; use the actual module path installed on your server rather than copying this example literally. Another option is compiling a statically linked third-party RTMP module with NGINX using --add-module. A custom build increases maintenance responsibility: you must track both NGINX security updates and the module source, then rebuild when either requires a fix.

Open only the ports you need
- SSH: Keep the administration port restricted to your management addresses where possible.
- HTTP and HTTPS: Open ports 80 and 443 if you use ordinary web delivery or TLS certificate issuance.
- RTMP: Open port 1935 only when publishers must connect directly to the VPS. If RTMP is internal or tunneled, do not expose it publicly.
Streaming traffic is mostly outbound. A VPS with enough CPU but an inadequate transfer allowance will still fail once the audience grows.
Serve prerecorded MP4 files
1. Create a separate media directory
Keep uploaded or source files separate from the directory NGINX exposes. Give the NGINX worker read access to the playback directory, but do not grant it unnecessary write access.
sudo mkdir -p /srv/media/videos
sudo chown -R root:www-data /srv/media
sudo find /srv/media -type d -exec chmod 750 {} ;
sudo find /srv/media -type f -exec chmod 640 {} ;
The group name may differ on your distribution. Verify the account used by the NGINX worker before applying ownership changes.
2. Add an HTTP location
Inside the appropriate server block, map a URL prefix to the media directory:
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name video.example.net;
# Configure certificate and key directives for your TLS setup.
location /videos/ {
alias /srv/media/videos/;
add_header Cache-Control "public, max-age=3600";
}
}
The trailing slashes on both the URL and alias matter. With this mapping, /videos/intro.mp4 resolves to /srv/media/videos/intro.mp4. Add authentication or signed authorization at the application layer when the media is private; an unguessable filename alone is not a complete access-control system.
3. Test delivery before adding pseudo-streaming
Validate and reload the configuration:
sudo nginx -t
sudo nginx -s reload
A successful test reports that the syntax is valid. Check a response header and a small range request from a client:
curl -I https://video.example.net/videos/intro.mp4
curl -r 0-1048575 -o /dev/null -v https://video.example.net/videos/intro.mp4
Look for a successful response, a sensible Content-Type such as video/mp4, and range behavior that matches your player. A 404 usually indicates an incorrect alias, filename or permission; a 403 usually points to directory traversal permissions or an access rule.

Enable MP4 pseudo-streaming and reliable seeking
The ngx_http_mp4_module provides server-side pseudo-streaming for MP4 files. A compatible player can request start and end times so playback can begin or seek without downloading the entire file.
Check that the module exists
The module is not built by default. Confirm that the NGINX build includes --with-http_mp4_module. If not, install a package variant that includes it or rebuild NGINX with that option. Do not add the mp4 directive until the running binary supports it; otherwise nginx -t will fail with an unknown-directive error.
Add the directive to the media location
location /videos/ {
alias /srv/media/videos/;
mp4;
add_header Cache-Control "public, max-age=3600";
}
The player may then issue a URL such as /videos/lecture.mp4?start=120 to begin around the 120-second mark. Whether a particular player uses these parameters is player-specific; ordinary HTTP range requests may still be used for other clients.
Move the MP4 metadata for fast startup
MP4 files contain metadata, including the index used for seeking. If the moov atom is at the end of a large file, NGINX may need to read and rewrite the whole file before serving a pseudo-streaming response. That can consume CPU, memory and disk I/O for every affected request. Prepare files with their metadata at the beginning (often called “fast start” or “web optimized” output) before placing them in production. Confirm the result with the toolchain that creates your media; NGINX does not repair every poorly arranged file without a cost.
Publish HLS from prerecorded media
The HTTP HLS module provides server-side HLS support for MP4 and MOV files. It emits an .m3u8 playlist and fragment URLs, commonly ending in .ts. HLS is useful when clients expect segmented playback or when you plan to add multiple quality levels later.
Configure an HLS location
The exact directives available depend on the NGINX build. A minimal configuration using the documented HLS directive and a five-second fragment example looks like this:
location /hls/ {
alias /srv/media/hls/;
hls;
hls_fragment 5s;
add_header Cache-Control no-cache;
types {
application/vnd.apple.mpegurl m3u8;
video/mp2t ts;
}
}
The five-second value is a documented configuration example, not a universal latency or performance guarantee. Shorter fragments can reduce the time a viewer waits for new media but increase request and filesystem activity. Longer fragments reduce overhead but increase startup and live latency.

Use the correct media format
Keep video in H.264 and audio in AAC or MP3 for the formats documented by the module. If your source uses a different codec, transcode or remux it before packaging. A playlist can load successfully while playback still fails if the codecs are not supported by the target device.
Test both the playlist and a fragment
Request the playlist directly, then inspect the fragment requests in the player or with a command-line HTTP client. A playlist that returns HTML, redirects unexpectedly, or points to the wrong directory will prevent playback even when the media files exist. Check MIME types, URL prefixes, filesystem permissions and whether the generated fragment names match the playlist exactly.
Accept a live RTMP feed and produce HLS
1. Define the RTMP application
After loading a compatible RTMP module, add an RTMP block in the main NGINX configuration. This example accepts publishers on port 1935, enables live mode, and writes HLS output under the HTTP-visible media tree:
rtmp {
server {
listen 1935;
application live {
live on;
hls on;
hls_path /srv/media/hls/live;
hls_fragment 5s;
}
}
}
The corresponding HTTP server must expose /srv/media/hls/live through a location such as /hls/live/, with the HLS MIME types shown earlier. Keep the RTMP and HTTP paths conceptually separate even when they share a parent directory: publishers write, while viewers read.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Give the publisher the correct endpoint
A publisher typically sends to an address in the form rtmp://video.example.net/live/STREAM_KEY, where live is the application name and the final component identifies the stream. The exact fields in an encoder differ. Treat the stream key as a secret: rotate it if it is exposed, and do not publish it in client-side code.
The RTMP module documentation describes loading and configuring the module but does not prescribe one authentication design. Enforce authorization with the controls supported by your chosen module, reverse proxy or application, and test that an unknown key cannot publish.
3. Make the HLS playlist available to viewers
Once a publisher is connected, viewers use an HTTPS URL such as https://video.example.net/hls/live/STREAM_KEY.m3u8, provided your application creates that playlist name. Use a browser player or native HLS client appropriate to your audience. Some browsers provide native HLS support; others need a JavaScript player that understands HLS.

4. Add transcoding only when it solves a real requirement
NGINX does not automatically turn one incoming stream into a complete adaptive-bitrate ladder. If you need multiple resolutions, different audio tracks or codec conversion, run a separate transcoder such as FFmpeg and feed its outputs into the packaging workflow. The correct command depends on the input codec, frame rate, target resolutions, keyframe interval, audio settings and available CPU or hardware acceleration, so there is no safe one-command recipe for every VPS.

Use TLS for viewer traffic
Serve playlists, fragments and MP4 files over HTTPS. Mixed-content rules can block an HTTP video URL embedded in an HTTPS page, and unencrypted URLs expose viewing behavior on the network. Configure certificates and automatic renewal using the method supported by your operating system, then reload NGINX only after nginx -t succeeds.
Separate upload, source and playback permissions
- Store source uploads outside the public playback directory.
- Allow the NGINX worker to read published files, not to overwrite application or system configuration.
- Publish only validated media; do not expose an arbitrary filesystem path through an
alias. - Limit directory listing and disable methods your application does not need.
Control access to private streams
For private on-demand media, put authorization in front of the location or generate time-limited URLs. For live publishing, require an authenticated or unguessable stream key and monitor failed publish attempts. Hiding port 1935 does not replace authentication if the endpoint must be reachable by public encoders.
Plan bandwidth, storage and VPS capacity
Outbound bandwidth is the first scaling constraint
For a rough capacity check, multiply the encoded bitrate by the number of simultaneous viewers and add protocol overhead. A 4 Mb/s stream watched by 25 people requires about 100 Mb/s of sustained media payload before overhead, retries and other server traffic. This is a planning calculation, not a provider guarantee; confirm the VPS transfer allowance, port speed and regional routing terms for your plan.
Transcoding changes the sizing problem
Serving existing files is primarily an I/O and network task. Live transcoding adds sustained CPU and RAM demand, and several renditions multiply it. Watch CPU saturation, encoder queue depth, memory pressure and dropped frames. If the encoder cannot maintain real time, viewers will see growing delay even when NGINX itself is healthy.
HLS creates many small files
Each active stream produces a playlist and a rolling set of fragments. Allocate enough disk space for the retention window and leave room for logs, temporary files and uploads. Remove obsolete fragments according to your retention policy, and monitor inode usage as well as gigabytes; a server can run out of inodes while substantial byte capacity remains.
Operate and troubleshoot the service
Use a safe configuration-change cycle
- Edit the relevant NGINX configuration and preserve a known-good copy.
- Run
sudo nginx -t. Do not reload if it reports an error. - Reload with
sudo nginx -s reloadafter the test passes. - Check the error log and make one controlled playback or publish test.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely causes | Checks |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX will not reload | Unknown directive, missing module, syntax error or bad path | Read the exact nginx -t error; confirm the module is loaded before its directives are used |
| MP4 returns 404 or 403 | Incorrect alias, filename, ownership or directory execute permission |
Resolve the URL to the filesystem path and test read access as the NGINX worker user |
| Seeking jumps to the beginning | Player does not send time parameters, MP4 module is absent, or metadata is poorly placed | Inspect the request, check nginx -V, and prepare a fast-start MP4 |
| Playlist loads but video does not play | Wrong MIME type, inaccessible fragments, unsupported codec or malformed playlist paths | Request the playlist and one fragment directly; verify H.264/AAC or MP3 and response headers |
| Live stream never appears | Publisher endpoint, application name, key, firewall or RTMP module configuration is wrong | Check the publish log, port 1935 reachability, stream key and generated HLS directory |
| Playback falls behind live | Transcoder cannot keep real time, VPS is CPU-starved, or fragments are retained incorrectly | Monitor encoder CPU, dropped frames, playlist age and disk activity |
Monitor the metrics that affect viewers
- Outbound bandwidth and transfer consumption.
- NGINX worker errors, connection counts and upstream or filesystem failures.
- Disk space and inode usage, especially in the HLS fragment directory.
- Transcoder CPU, RAM, queue depth and frame-drop counters.
- Playlist age, fragment creation time and failed viewer requests.
Keep NGINX and the operating system patched. NGINX release notes document security fixes that can affect media modules; check the current release and advisory before pinning version-specific installation commands.
Decide between MP4, HLS and RTMP-to-HLS
Choose MP4 when you have finished files, a modest feature set and no requirement for adaptive bitrate. Choose HLS when segmented delivery, broad device compatibility or future bitrate switching matters. Choose RTMP-to-HLS when a live encoder must publish to your VPS and browser-oriented clients need an HLS URL. In every case, validate the codec, protect the publish path, run nginx -t before reloads, and size the VPS for network egress plus any transcoding rather than for NGINX processes alone.
