To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an AWS Lightsail VPS, run software on the VPS that reads the file and sends a continuous live encoder feed to YouTube—normally over RTMPS. Create a YouTube live event, configure the VPS encoder with YouTube’s ingest address and your private stream key, then preview and monitor the stream in Live Control Room. This differs from uploading a video to YouTube: the VPS sends live ingest, and YouTube distributes the resulting broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; it also states a minimum age of 16.
- An AWS Lightsail Linux/Unix instance with enough CPU, memory, disk space, and sustained upload capacity for the selected media and encoding workload.
- A prerecorded video file accessible to the instance and software that can read it and transmit an encoder output continuously. The official AWS and YouTube guidance does not prescribe a specific Linux distribution, FFmpeg command, playback loop, scheduler, or Lightsail size for this workflow.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
Prerecorded material can be sent as a live feed, but this setup is not a policy exemption. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and applicable copyright and monetization policies. The cited setup guidance does not establish a special disclosure rule for prerecorded streams.
How to stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live
1. Verify access and create the live event
- Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and that livestreaming is enabled.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and select the available stream protocol and settings for your encoder.
- Copy the ingest address and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key secret; do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or webpage.
- Plan to start early enough to check the incoming preview and stream health before the intended audience arrives.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing ahead, previewing the incoming signal, and monitoring stream health and audio/video during the event.
2. Create and prepare the Lightsail instance
- In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux/Unix instance in a region appropriate for your operating needs. Choose a plan based on measured workload rather than assuming a particular bundle can encode a particular resolution.
- Install and configure a media reader/encoder that supports YouTube’s ingest protocol. The exact package installation and command depend on your operating system, software version, source format, and whether you are copying a compatible stream or transcoding it.
- Make the source file available on the instance and confirm there is enough disk space for the file, logs, and any temporary output your workflow needs.
- Check CPU and memory use while the intended workflow runs. Reading and remuxing a compatible file is generally less CPU-intensive than real-time transcoding, but the specific capacity required must be validated on your instance.
AWS states that Lightsail bundles include compute, memory, storage, and a data-transfer allowance, with hourly billing up to the plan’s maximum monthly charge. Its plan list and regional allowances can change, so check the current Lightsail pricing page before choosing. The official materials do not provide a benchmark for a prerecorded YouTube stream, so no instance size can be guaranteed from resolution alone.

3. Keep the network configuration narrow
For this architecture, the VPS initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest service. You do not need to open an inbound RTMP port on Lightsail simply to send a stream. YouTube documents RTMPS ingest using port 443, TLS, and a server-name indication (SNI) matching the ingest hostname; its RTMPS ingestion documentation says the connection must be made to port 443.
- Allow only the inbound services you actually need. Restrict SSH to trusted source IP ranges rather than exposing administration broadly.
- Set IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately in Lightsail; an IPv4 rule does not automatically define the IPv6 policy.
- Outbound traffic is allowed by the Lightsail instance firewall, but confirm that any host-level firewall or network policy also permits the required outbound connection.
- A public IPv4 address can change after an instance is stopped and started. Attach a static IPv4 if an external service depends on a stable incoming address. A static address is not inherently required for the VPS’s outbound YouTube ingest connection.

4. Configure the encoder and send the file
Configure your chosen software to read the prerecorded file and send an encoder feed to the event’s YouTube ingest address using the corresponding stream key. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. If your workflow uses the YouTube Live Streaming API, the LiveStreams resource can provide RTMP and RTMPS primary ingestion addresses and optional backup addresses; use the correct address and application path from the event rather than guessing or substituting a generic URL.

Match the output to the source’s aspect ratio and frame rate where practical, and use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you choose. Do not apply one bitrate to every video: higher output resolutions and frame rates require more sustained upload capacity. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into formats for viewers.

The documentation cited here does not verify a particular FFmpeg command or loop setting. If you use FFmpeg or another command-line encoder, check that software’s version-specific documentation for input handling, audio mapping, RTMPS support, reconnection behavior, and loop or playlist options. Test the actual command with your file and event before relying on it. Never publish a command containing the real stream key.
5. Preview, monitor, and confirm continuity
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for picture, aspect ratio, motion, and audio; review YouTube’s stream-health notices.
- Watch the VPS CPU, memory, disk, and network use while the feed runs. A healthy preview does not prove the instance has enough headroom for a longer broadcast or a more demanding transcode.
- If you intend continuous programming, verify that playback continues when the file reaches its end. The software’s loop or playlist behavior is separate from YouTube ingest and must be configured and tested in the player or encoder you choose.
- End the event from the encoder and Live Control Room when the broadcast is finished, following the workflow shown for your event.
How much bandwidth does a YouTube live stream use?
The outgoing stream’s bitrate determines its approximate upload use. As a planning estimate, multiply the bitrate in megabits per second by the broadcast duration in seconds, then divide by 8 to estimate megabytes; divide by 1,000 for an approximate decimal gigabyte figure. For example, at 6 Mbps for one hour: 6 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 2,700 MB, or about 2.7 GB before protocol overhead. This is an estimate, not an AWS billing measurement; allow headroom and account for other inbound and outbound data on the instance.

Compare expected transfer with the current regional Lightsail allowance. AWS says qualifying excess outbound transfer to the internet/public IPv4 can be charged after the allowance, and rates differ by region. Its transfer FAQ lists $0.09/GB for US East (Ohio and N. Virginia) and US West (Oregon); check the current Lightsail FAQ and pricing details for your region and plan before estimating recurring costs.

Costs and capacity trade-offs
- Instance plan: The plan covers compute, memory, storage, and a transfer allowance. Larger plans cost more; select based on observed encoding load and needed storage, not a presumed resolution-to-plan chart.
- Encoding method: Copying or remuxing an already compatible source can need less CPU than changing codec, resolution, or frame rate in real time. Test your actual source and settings.
- Transfer overage: The stream’s sustained bitrate and duration drive outbound usage. Long or frequent broadcasts can exceed an included allowance; regional charges and allowances are subject to change.
- Address stability: A static IPv4 has value when a stable inbound address is required by another service. The outbound RTMPS connection to YouTube does not by itself require one.
- Protocol choice: YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder ingest. Other delivery protocols have different use cases and trade-offs; for a straightforward VPS encoder path, follow the protocol offered by the event and supported by your software.
Troubleshooting common failures
The event does not receive a signal
- Check that the encoder is using the exact ingest address, application path, and stream key for the active event.
- Confirm the software is using RTMPS correctly, including TLS, port 443, and the matching SNI hostname where applicable.
- Check outbound network rules and any host firewall. Opening an inbound RTMP port is not the fix for an outbound ingest connection.
- Confirm that the channel is eligible to livestream and that the event is active in Live Control Room.
The stream appears but is unhealthy or keeps dropping
- Compare actual sustained upload capacity with the encoder bitrate and reduce output bitrate or complexity if the connection cannot maintain it.
- Inspect VPS CPU and memory. If transcoding saturates the instance, use a less demanding encode or a plan capable of the measured workload.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s connection logs to distinguish network interruptions from encoding failures.
Playback stops at the end of the video
The file ending is a player/encoder behavior, not a YouTube Live setting. Configure a loop, playlist, or scheduler in the software you selected, then test the transition before scheduling a continuous broadcast. The official YouTube and Lightsail pages cited here do not specify a universal looping command.

Video or audio looks wrong
- Check source and output frame rate, aspect ratio, resolution, audio mapping, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Use the Live Control Room preview to verify the signal before starting for viewers; a file that plays locally may still be mapped or encoded incorrectly by the selected software.
