Yes—you can keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live after your computer and OBS are off. The practical design is to send your files to an always-on encoder in the cloud. That service holds your playlist, connects to YouTube with your server URL and stream key, and continuously sends the feed. You can also run FFmpeg on a VPS or use a hardware encoder, but those approaches leave you responsible for an always-on machine, storage, restarts and monitoring.
This guide shows the YouTube setup, a self-hosted FFmpeg method, the cloud alternative, operating costs, policy risks and fixes for common failures.
How the 24/7 setup works
A YouTube live stream is not generated by the watch page. An encoder must continuously send a video-and-audio feed to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS is only one type of encoder. For an unattended channel, move that encoder to a cloud service or an always-on VPS.
- Prepare videos, music and graphics for which you have commercial streaming rights.
- Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming.
- Create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder.
- Upload or select your files, set playlist order or shuffle, and define what happens when a file ends.
- Start the encoder, confirm YouTube’s preview and watch page, then close your local computer.
YouTube receives the feed from the remote encoder, so shutting down OBS or your laptop does not end the broadcast. The stream ends only when that remote encoder stops sending, YouTube terminates the event, or you stop the event yourself.

Requirements to check before you start
Channel eligibility
Your channel must be verified and free of live-stream restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your intended launch.
Rights-cleared media
Use footage, music, voice recordings, fonts, logos and graphics that you created or licensed for commercial streaming. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can produce a warning, interruption or termination, and even licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel. Keep invoices, licences, permission emails and the relevant usage terms in a folder you can access quickly.
A sensible playlist
Give every file a clear title and check its duration, frame rate, audio channels and loudness before upload. Decide whether the channel should play in a fixed order, shuffle, or follow a schedule. Include a short slate or transition only if it adds useful context; a silent or static loop can make the stream appear broken and may contribute to repetitive-content concerns.
Secure stream credentials
Treat the stream key like a password. Store it in the encoder’s protected credential field, do not publish it in screenshots or scripts, and rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. A person with the key can send content to your live event.
Create the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Choose to create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, description, visibility, audience setting and any start time that fits your programming.
- Select the encoder workflow. YouTube displays the server URL and stream key for that event.
- Copy both values exactly into your cloud encoder, VPS script or hardware encoder. Do not confuse the server URL with the public watch-page URL.
- Start sending the feed before the scheduled start. YouTube’s guidance is to configure an encoder at least two hours in advance and start it at least 15 minutes before an event so you can inspect the preview.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview shows moving video and audible sound. Open the watch page on a separate browser and test mobile playback as well.
- Keep an eye on the archive indicator and stream-health messages. Streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; plan your archive and event strategy accordingly if your broadcast runs longer.
When YouTube reports a stable preview, the remote encoder can continue while your local computer is offline.
Option comparison: what can stay online?
| Rank | Approach | What remains online | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | StreamNeo | StreamNeo’s cloud encoder and storage | Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, first day free | Subscription and provider storage limits |
| 2 | Another cloud prerecorded-streaming service | The provider’s encoder, playlist and storage | No OBS, VPS or home upload connection to maintain | Controls, limits, pricing and recovery behavior vary by provider |
| 3 | VPS with FFmpeg or similar software | Your rented server, files and encoder process | Maximum control and automation; can be economical at scale | You maintain updates, storage, CPU load, restarts, security and monitoring |
| 4 | Dedicated hardware encoder | Local encoder plus a local or attached media source | Appliance-style operation | It still depends on local power and internet and does not automatically provide playlist hosting or scheduling |
| 5 | One long upload or Premiere | YouTube’s copy of the upload | Simple for a finite event | It is not an always-on live channel and does not provide continuous live-chat presence |
Do-it-yourself method: run a looping playlist on a VPS with FFmpeg
This method avoids OBS, but the VPS becomes the computer you must keep healthy. Choose a server with enough disk for the media, network capacity for the outgoing stream, and a process supervisor that can restart FFmpeg.

1. Prepare the server and media
- Create a non-root account for the streaming process and apply security updates.
- Upload the video files to a dedicated directory. Keep an offline copy of the originals and your playlist definition.
- Use one consistent output format where possible. Mixed frame rates, unusual audio layouts or damaged files are common causes of stalls.
- Restrict inbound firewall access to administration ports you actually use. The encoder normally needs outbound access to YouTube’s ingest server.
2. Build a playlist file
For FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, create a text file containing one line per media file, for example:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsfile '/srv/live/episode-01.mp4'
file '/srv/live/episode-02.mp4'
file '/srv/live/episode-03.mp4'
Use absolute paths, check that the service account can read every file, and test the transition between each pair. If you need a strict schedule, generate this file from your scheduler rather than editing it while FFmpeg is running.
3. Send the feed to YouTube
For media that is already compatible with your chosen output, a representative command is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/live/playlist.txt -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmp://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the server URL and key with the values shown for your YouTube event. The -re option reads the files at their intended playback rate instead of sending them as fast as the disk can be read. Stream copy reduces CPU use, but it will not correct incompatible codecs, variable parameters or damaged timestamps.
If the files are not compatible, transcode them to a single, stable format before going live or use an FFmpeg command with an H.264 video encoder and AAC audio encoder. Select resolution, frame rate, audio rate, video bitrate and keyframe interval according to the current recommendations displayed in YouTube’s encoder workflow and the capacity of your VPS. Do not choose a bitrate your server’s upload link cannot sustain.

4. Make the process survive disconnects
Do not run the command in an SSH window and assume it is permanent. Run it under a service manager or supervisor that starts at boot, records logs and restarts the process after a non-zero exit. A simple shell loop can relaunch FFmpeg after a completed playlist, but add a delay so a configuration error does not create a rapid restart storm.

while true; do
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/live/playlist.txt -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmp://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
sleep 10
done
For production use, pair the loop with a supervisor, log rotation and an alert when the process exits repeatedly. Keep the stream key outside publicly readable files and protect any environment file that contains it.
5. Test before announcing the channel
- Start the process with an unlisted or private event.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for several minutes and inspect audio sync, black frames and buffering.
- Open the watch page on both desktop and mobile data.
- Stop the process deliberately and confirm that your supervisor restarts it and that YouTube receives the new connection.
- Reboot the VPS and verify that the service starts automatically.
A VPS gives you control, but you are responsible for every failure domain: provider outage, disk-full conditions, expired credentials, CPU saturation, network loss and software updates.

Encoder settings that affect stability
Resolution and frame rate
Send the resolution and frame rate your source and upload link can sustain. A cloud service that does not re-encode will preserve the uploaded file up to its stated limit; a VPS transcode must be sized for the selected output. Avoid changing resolution between playlist items unless you have tested the transition.

Video bitrate
Bitrate is the main driver of outgoing bandwidth and picture quality. Use the quality preset and bitrate range shown in YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance for your resolution and frame rate. Leave headroom for protocol overhead and other traffic; a saturated uplink produces dropped frames even when the VPS CPU is idle.
Keyframes and timestamps
Regular keyframes help YouTube begin decoding quickly and recover after a reconnect. Keep a consistent keyframe interval across files, use monotonically increasing timestamps, and inspect logs for non-monotonic or negative timestamp errors. Pre-process files that trigger timestamp warnings instead of hoping the live encoder will repair them.
Audio
Check that every item has an audible track, matching sample rate and sensible loudness. A video-only file can make the entire channel appear silent when the playlist reaches it. Normalize sources before upload if their volume changes sharply from one item to the next.
Custom protocol implementations
If you build your own HLS sender rather than using an RTMP encoder or a managed service, YouTube requires media playlists rather than master playlists, single-stream encoding, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and compliant segment naming and sequence rules. This is a specialized implementation path; a standard encoder is less error-prone for most channels.
Copyright, monetization and reused-content risks
Technical uptime does not make a stream eligible for monetization. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material can be classified as “inauthentic” and become ineligible for monetization, including live streams. Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement: permission to use a clip does not guarantee monetization if the channel adds no substantial original commentary, modification, educational value or entertainment value.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Design the channel around a clear viewer benefit. Add original narration, analysis, teaching, curation, contextual graphics or meaningful programming changes where appropriate. Avoid simply looping someone else’s clips, music collections or templated slides. Commercially monetized content must have commercial rights to every visual and audio element.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows “waiting for encoder” | Wrong server URL or stream key, or the encoder is not sending | Copy both credentials again from the same event, restart the encoder, and check outbound connectivity. |
| Preview is black | Unsupported codec, damaged file, failed playlist path or no decoded video | Play the source locally, inspect FFmpeg logs, convert the file to a consistent format and verify file permissions. |
| Audio is missing | A playlist item has no audio stream or incompatible audio parameters | Inspect every file, add or re-encode an audio track, and test transitions before going public. |
| Frequent dropped frames | Upload link is saturated, VPS is CPU-bound, or bitrate is too high | Measure sustained outbound capacity, lower the output bitrate or resolution within YouTube’s guidance, and check CPU and disk I/O. |
| Stream stops when a video ends | The playlist is not looping and no supervisor restarts the process | Enable looping in the cloud service or use a tested concat loop plus a process supervisor. |
| Stream ends after a provider or YouTube disconnect | No automatic recovery or stale encoder process | Use a service with automatic recovery, or implement reconnect and restart logic, then verify it with a deliberate test. |
| Viewers report buffering while server metrics look normal | Inconsistent source parameters, insufficient ingest margin or viewer network conditions | Check YouTube stream health, standardize files, leave bandwidth headroom and test from another network. |
| Copyright warning or interruption | Third-party match or missing rights-holder allowlist | Stop the affected item, document rights, replace or license the material, and request allowlisting where required. |
| Monetization is rejected | Repetitive, mass-produced or reused presentation | Add substantial original context and variation, and review the channel against YouTube’s inauthentic and reused-content policies. |
Operational checklist for an unattended channel
- Keep an offline backup of every source file, playlist and YouTube event detail.
- Record when licences expire and remove media before rights lapse.
- Check the public watch page and mobile playback after every playlist or encoder change.
- Monitor stream-health messages, archive growth, audio presence and process restarts.
- Set an alert for disk usage, CPU saturation, failed restarts and repeated disconnects.
- Rotate an exposed stream key immediately.
- Document who can access the YouTube channel and encoder account.
- Do not claim failure-proof operation unless your provider supplies a current service-level agreement.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I close OBS after starting a YouTube live stream?
Only if another encoder has taken over the feed. Closing OBS stops its connection; a cloud encoder or running VPS process must continue sending video to keep the event live.
Will YouTube automatically replay my playlist forever?
YouTube does not turn an ordinary upload into an endless live playlist by itself. The looping behavior must be provided by a cloud service, FFmpeg process or another encoder.
Is a 24/7 stream automatically monetizable?
No. Copyright clearance, commercial rights and YouTube’s inauthentic- and reused-content reviews still apply to continuous live programming.
What happens if YouTube drops the connection?
A managed service may reconnect automatically if it offers that feature. With a VPS, your encoder and process supervisor must detect the disconnect and restart the send process.
Can I use a camera with StreamNeo?
StreamNeo is designed for uploaded prerecorded videos and playlists sent to YouTube; it is not a camera-broadcast service.
