Use YouTube Live with an encoder, not screen sharing. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event, copy its stream URL and stream key into a software or hardware encoder, then feed that encoder a video file or playlist. YouTube receives the encoded stream as a normal live broadcast while your desktop remains private.

For a 24/7 channel, the encoder must keep sending the playlist, your upload connection must remain stable, and every video must be owned or licensed for streaming. A computer running OBS can do this, a standalone appliance such as the AJA HELO Plus can operate without a computer, or StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud.

How prerecorded YouTube Live streaming works

Screen sharing is only one way to send pictures to YouTube, and it is usually the least suitable method for an always-on channel. An encoder converts a video file, playlist or other source into a live stream and sends it to YouTube over the stream URL and stream key. YouTube then distributes that incoming feed to viewers and creates the player page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source does not have to be a camera or a visible desktop. It can be a prerecorded file selected in a software encoder or a playlist scheduled by a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for the connection between the encoder and YouTube.

Three practical ways to run the stream

Method What stays running Best fit Main limitation
StreamNeo (cloud) StreamNeo’s cloud service Continuous YouTube playback without leaving equipment at home You upload videos and use StreamNeo for the YouTube stream; it does not broadcast a live camera
OBS or another software encoder A computer, the encoder application and the network connection Testing, detailed source control and low upfront software cost The computer can sleep, reboot, update or lose power and interrupt the stream
Standalone hardware encoder The appliance and its network connection Removing the streaming computer from the setup Hardware has an upfront cost and its playlist automation differs by model

StreamNeo is listed first because it keeps a YouTube stream on from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives one free day without a card.

Check these requirements before you start

YouTube Live eligibility

  • Your channel must be verified.
  • You must have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • The person streaming must be at least 16 years old.
  • First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast.

Open YouTube Studio and use the Live Control Room to confirm that live streaming is available. If activation is still pending, an encoder cannot make the event live earlier.

Rights to every file

Make an inventory of the video, music, photographs, voice recordings and clips in the playlist. Use material you created or have a license to stream on YouTube. A playlist that runs for days does not create permission to use someone else’s recording. Keep license documents and permission emails so you can respond to a claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The YouTube transport instructions explain how to send a stream; they do not grant copyright permission. A rights holder can still claim, block or interrupt a broadcast. If your channel depends on monetization, review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content requirements separately before building a 24/7 schedule.

Files, storage and network

  • Keep the original files in a location the chosen encoder can read continuously.
  • Check that the playlist has a defined order and a loop or repeat option. If the last item ends and no loop is enabled, the live feed can go idle.
  • Use a wired connection where possible. The upload connection must sustain the encoder’s selected bitrate with headroom for ordinary network activity.
  • Plan for power, operating-system updates and automatic restarts if a computer or hardware encoder is running for long periods.

Step-by-step: create a prerecorded YouTube Live stream

1. Enable live streaming and verify the channel

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open the Live Control Room.
  2. Complete channel verification and live-stream activation if YouTube requests it.
  3. Check that no restriction from the last 90 days prevents live streaming.
  4. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation before your launch date.

2. Create or schedule the event

In the Live Control Room, create a new live event or schedule one for later. Scheduling gives you a watch-page link and lets you promote the broadcast before it starts. Set the title, description, visibility and start time, then save the event.

Choose the stream option that provides a stream URL (sometimes called the server URL) and a stream key. The key identifies the event to YouTube; treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a screenshot, description or public chat. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

3. Select the encoder path

Use a software encoder when you need flexible sources and already have a reliable computer. Use standalone hardware when removing the computer is more important than software convenience. YouTube’s verified hardware-encoder list includes the AJA HELO Plus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Configure OBS or another software encoder

  1. Install and open the encoder on the computer that will remain on for the broadcast.
  2. Add a media source or playlist source and point it to the prerecorded files. Enable looping or repeat in the source’s playback controls.
  3. Arrange the playlist in the order viewers should see. Confirm that each file has usable audio and that the next item starts after the previous one.
  4. Open the encoder’s stream settings, choose YouTube if it is offered, or paste YouTube’s stream URL into the server field.
  5. Paste the event’s stream key into the key field. Do not paste the key into the server field or add spaces around it.
  6. Save the output settings described below, then start the encoder’s stream. Starting the encoder sends data to YouTube but does not necessarily make the event public until you select Go live in the Live Control Room.

Keep the computer awake, connected to power and configured not to sleep. Disable automatic restarts during the planned broadcast where your operating-system policy permits, and monitor the encoder after an update or restart.

5. Configure a standalone encoder

A standalone appliance performs the encoding without a streaming computer. Connect it to the network, select YouTube when the device offers a YouTube destination, and enter the stream URL and key when it does not provide a direct sign-in workflow.

The AJA HELO Plus is listed by YouTube as a verified hardware encoder. Its PlayToStream function allows prerecorded media to be scheduled and streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Follow the device’s current instructions for importing media, scheduling playback and enabling repeat; automation controls are not identical across hardware models.

6. Set the technical output

Setting What to choose Why it matters
Transport RTMPS when the encoder supports it YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
Resolution A resolution supported by the source files, encoder and upload connection YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple output formats. Sending a resolution the source cannot supply only wastes processing.
Frame rate A consistent frame rate matching the source Changing frame rate during a loop can cause timing or motion problems.
Bitrate A stable value appropriate for the selected resolution and frame rate, with upload headroom Too little bitrate produces soft or blocky video; an upload link that cannot sustain it causes buffering or disconnects.
Keyframe interval Use a consistent interval throughout the stream, following the encoder’s YouTube profile OBS documentation notes that consistent keyframes allow automatic quality transitions to work smoothly.
Audio Enable the audio track required by your files and verify levels in the preview A silent or clipped track is easier to fix before going live than after viewers report it.

Do not change resolution, frame rate or bitrate halfway through a long playlist unless you have tested the encoder’s behavior. YouTube performs the device-specific transcoding after it receives your feed, so you do not need to create a separate file for every viewer’s connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check the preview and go live

  1. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room to show its preview.
  2. Watch the preview for video, audio, aspect ratio and the beginning of the playlist.
  3. Confirm that the event title, visibility and scheduled time are correct.
  4. Select Go live. The stream then appears on the watch page and can enter subscriber feeds.

If the preview does not appear, stop and correct the connection rather than repeatedly pressing Go live. Recheck the server URL, stream key and encoder status first.

8. Let the playlist run continuously

For a loop, the encoder must return to the first file automatically. Test a short copy of the playlist before committing to a 24/7 schedule. Watch the transition between files, confirm that audio does not disappear, and make sure the source does not pause when the computer’s display is turned off.

For scheduled programming, create separate events when you need different titles, start times or watch pages. If one event is intended to run continuously, document the recovery procedure for a dropped connection and decide who will monitor it.

9. End the event and understand archiving

When the broadcast is finished, stop sending the playlist from the encoder and end the event in the Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a multiday 24/7 feed will produce the same archive behavior; plan separate shorter events if an archive is important.

How to make a 24/7 stream dependable

Remove avoidable computer failures

  • Use a dedicated computer account and close applications that can show notifications or compete for upload bandwidth.
  • Prevent sleep and verify that the encoder launches with the correct playlist after a reboot.
  • Keep the stream key in the encoder’s secure settings rather than in a shared document.
  • Check the preview after every software, driver or operating-system update.

Design for recovery

A continuous channel needs more than a loop button. Record the stream URL, event name, encoder settings and recovery steps. If YouTube drops the connection, restart the encoder only after checking whether the event is still accepting the same key. If the network itself is down, restarting software cannot restore the feed until connectivity returns.

Troubleshooting prerecorded YouTube streams

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No preview in Live Control Room The encoder is stopped, the server URL is wrong, or the stream key belongs to another event. Start the encoder, paste the exact URL and key again, and confirm that the selected event is the one receiving the feed.
“Invalid stream key” or authentication error The key was mistyped, reset, or copied with extra characters. Copy a fresh key from the event, replace it in the encoder and keep the new key private.
Preview appears, but the public page is not live The encoder is sending a preview and the event has not been started publicly. Check the preview, then select Go live in the Live Control Room.
Video buffers or disconnects Upload capacity is below the selected bitrate, or the network is unstable. Reduce output demands to match the connection, remove competing traffic, prefer wired networking and test again before the next event.
Image is soft or blocky The selected bitrate is too low for the resolution and motion, or the source itself is low quality. Match bitrate and resolution to the source and available upload capacity; do not upscale a low-resolution file expecting new detail.
Motion stutters at file changes Files use different frame rates or the encoder is changing timing between items. Standardize the playlist where possible and keep the output frame rate and keyframe interval consistent.
Audio is missing or clipped The source has no usable track, the media source is muted, or levels are too high. Play each file locally, unmute the source, watch the encoder’s meters and verify audio in the YouTube preview.
Playlist stops after the last video Loop/repeat is disabled or the playlist source lost access to its files. Enable looping, use stable file paths and run a complete test cycle before going live.
Stream stops when the laptop closes The software encoder depends on that computer and it entered sleep or lost power. Keep the computer awake and powered, move the encoder to a dedicated machine, or use standalone hardware or a cloud service.
Copyright claim or interruption A file contains material you do not have rights to use. Remove or replace the item, obtain an appropriate license and keep proof. YouTube’s streaming workflow does not override copyright enforcement.
No usable archive after a long broadcast The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. Use events under 12 hours when an automatic archive is required, and schedule additional events for longer programming.

Software, hardware or cloud: choosing the right path

OBS or another software encoder may be free, but the total setup still includes a computer, electricity, storage and a reliable upload connection. A hardware encoder removes the streaming computer and can be more appliance-like, but it requires an upfront purchase and may require separate storage or networking. Verify the exact playlist, scheduling and recovery features of any model before buying it.

For a channel that must continue while your computer is off, a cloud workflow avoids the home machine and its sleep, power and restart failure modes. StreamNeo is the first option to consider for this use case because it is always on from the cloud, streams uploaded video to YouTube at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day without a card.
