PlayStation Plus Premium lets you play eligible games from the cloud instead of downloading or installing them. Sign in with an active Premium membership, open a supported game on PS5, PS4, PC, or PlayStation Portal, and choose Stream. Portal also has a dedicated Cloud Streaming tab, so a PS5 can be switched off or used by another account while you play.
Streaming is not universal: game eligibility, Portal support, account age, country, image quality, and catalog availability all vary. Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder or the PlayStation Plus Stream button on a game listing before you subscribe for one particular title.
What PlayStation Plus cloud streaming does
Cloud streaming runs the game on Sony’s remote servers and sends the video and audio to your device while returning your controller input. Because the game is not installed locally, you can begin playing without waiting for a download or reserving console storage.
Sony describes Premium as providing access to a selection of games that can be played without downloading and installing them. Streaming is separate from Remote Play: Remote Play uses your own PS5, whereas direct cloud streaming uses Sony’s servers. A Portal can therefore stream a supported cloud title even when the linked PS5 is powered off or another person is using that console under a different account.

Requirements before you start
Premium membership and a PlayStation account
You need an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership and a PlayStation Network account. Premium is the tier that includes cloud streaming. Billing recurs until you cancel, so check the renewal setting in your account if you only want one term.
A supported destination
Sony lists PS5, PS4, PC, and PlayStation Portal as supported destinations. The exact games available on each destination are not identical. Portal’s direct cloud mode currently supports selected PS5 games, not PS4 or PS3 games.
Portal account and country restrictions
Direct cloud streaming on Portal is restricted to adult accounts and supported countries. A child account or an account in an unsupported market will not gain access simply because the hardware and subscription are present. Country availability can change, so verify support for your account region before buying a Portal for this purpose.
A stable internet connection
Sony’s minimum to establish a streaming session is 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. That threshold starts a session; it is not a promise of smooth 1080p or 4K video. Sony’s resolution guidance lists 7 Mbps for 720p, 13 Mbps for 1080p, 23 Mbps recommended for 1080p on its PS5 table, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 4K. Actual quality varies with the game and the network.
Measure the connection at the device and time you plan to play, not only from a computer beside the router. Other household traffic, wireless interference, congestion, and unstable upload capacity can reduce quality even when a speed test briefly reports a high download number. Pause large downloads and uploads, use a wired connection where practical, and move a wireless device closer to the router if the stream repeatedly drops resolution or disconnects.
How to start a stream
On PS5
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that has Premium.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area and browse the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, or another eligible game collection.
- Open the game’s listing and look for the PlayStation Plus Stream button.
- Select Stream instead of downloading. The session begins when the cloud service has connected.
Some purchased digital PS5 games in your PlayStation Store or personal library can also be streamed when Sony marks them eligible. Ownership alone does not guarantee a stream option; eligibility is determined title by title.
On PS4
- Sign in with the Premium account.
- Open PlayStation Plus and select an eligible game listing.
- Choose Stream when that control is shown.
- Wait for the cloud session to initialize, then use the connected controller to play.
If a title has only a download control, it is not currently streamable on that PS4 account, in that region, or during that catalog period.
On PC
- Install or open Sony’s PlayStation Plus streaming client for PC where it is offered in your market.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account that holds Premium.
- Find the game in the available catalog or your eligible digital library.
- Open its page and select Stream, then connect a compatible controller when prompted.
The PC route is useful when you do not own a PlayStation console, but it remains dependent on the service’s country availability, supported titles, and the quality of your PC connection.
On PlayStation Portal
- Sign in to Portal with an eligible adult PlayStation account in a supported country.
- From the Portal home screen, open Cloud Streaming.
- Choose a compatible title from the displayed selection.
- Select Launch and wait for the cloud session to start.
Portal’s cloud library is currently limited to selected PS5 games. The Cloud Streaming tab is distinct from the normal Remote Play connection to a PS5.

Which games are available?
Cloud streaming includes several kinds of eligible content:
- Selected PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
- Selected PS5 games in the Classics Catalog.
- Selected digital PS5 games purchased from PlayStation Store or already in your library.
- Selected free-to-play titles.
Availability changes by game, region, country, membership plan, and time. Catalog games can receive an end date and leave the service. The safest check is Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder or the presence of the PlayStation Plus Stream button on the individual listing.

Sony said thousands of PS5 games were supported for cloud streaming at Portal’s launch, alongside hundreds of compatible catalog games. That figure describes the launch selection, not a fixed promise for every later date or country.
Internet speed, resolution, and stream quality
Use Sony’s figures as operating targets rather than guarantees. Upload capacity matters because your controller input and session data must travel back to the service. Download capacity determines how much video can reach the screen. Consistent performance is more useful than a high burst speed that falls during busy periods.

When the picture becomes soft or blocky
- Check that both download and upload remain above the level required for the resolution you selected.
- Stop other devices from saturating the connection, especially cloud backups, video uploads, and large game downloads.
- Try Ethernet or a less congested wireless band if the device supports it.
- Restart the router and the streaming device if the connection has become unstable.
- Lower expectations to 720p or 1080p when the connection cannot sustain higher guidance figures.
These steps cannot fix a title-specific outage or a server-side problem, but they separate a local network bottleneck from an account or catalog issue.

Can Portal stream without a PS5?
Yes, for the direct cloud-streaming feature, a PS5 does not need to be powered on or available. Portal connects to the cloud service after you open its Cloud Streaming tab, choose a supported PS5 game, and launch it. Sony also says the PS5 can be occupied by another account while Portal streams from the cloud.
This does not make Portal a universal cloud handheld. You still need Premium, an adult account, a supported country, a compatible title, and a connection that meets the service’s requirements. Portal’s direct cloud mode currently covers selected PS5 games only; it does not provide direct cloud access to PS4 or PS3 games.
What Premium costs in the United States

These are US prices shown by Sony in 2026. Prices, taxes, currencies, availability, and included content are market-specific and can change. A longer term lowers the effective monthly price compared with buying twelve separate months, but it also commits you to a larger upfront charge and does not protect a particular game from leaving the catalog.
Choosing where to stream

If you already own an eligible digital PS5 game, check your library before assuming you must obtain it through the catalog. If portability is the deciding factor, Portal is the purpose-built option, but its PS5-only cloud selection is narrower than the complete PlayStation game library.
Limits that affect your progress and purchases
DLC and add-ons
Sony says downloadable content and add-ons are not supported while streaming a title. A stream can therefore behave differently from a locally installed copy that has access to purchased expansions. Check this limitation before buying an add-on specifically for a streamed session.
Cloud saves
Cloud saves are automatically stored while you stream. That allows supported progress to continue on another compatible device, provided you sign in with the same account and the title remains available to you.
Catalog departures
A game can display an end date and leave the service. The stream option can also vary by region, country, plan, or time. Treat a catalog listing as temporary access unless you own an eligible digital copy and the listing confirms that copy can stream.

Two games on the same connection can feel different. Sony notes that performance depends on connection quality and the individual game. A stable session in one title does not prove that every title will have identical image quality or responsiveness.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Stream button is missing
- Confirm that the account has an active Premium membership.
- Check the title in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder.
- Verify the account country and, on Portal, that the account is an adult account.
- Look for an end date or a region-specific restriction on the listing.
- On Portal, confirm that the title is a supported PS5 game; PS4 and PS3 games do not qualify for direct Portal cloud streaming.
The session will not start
- Run a connection test and compare both upload and download results with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum.
- Stop competing network traffic and retry.
- Sign out and back in to refresh the Premium entitlement.
- Restart the device and router if other services also report connectivity problems.
The stream constantly changes resolution
- Compare the connection with Sony’s guidance for your target resolution: 7 Mbps for 720p, 13 Mbps for 1080p, 23 Mbps recommended for 1080p on PS5, 38 Mbps for 1440p, or 52 Mbps for 4K.
- Use a wired connection where possible or reduce wireless congestion.
- Choose a lower resolution when the available bandwidth cannot sustain the higher target.
Your expansion is unavailable
DLC and add-ons are not supported during streaming. This is a service limitation rather than a controller or network fault. Use a locally installed version where the add-on requires installation, or play the streamed base game without the unsupported content.
Your game disappeared
Check whether the title left the catalog, whether its regional eligibility changed, or whether you are viewing a different account. For a purchased digital PS5 game, open your library listing and confirm that Sony still shows a stream option.
