You can use your phone as a handheld screen and controller for games running on your gaming PC. The PC does the rendering; the phone receives the video and audio stream, while your touch or controller input travels back to the computer. You do not need a dedicated handheld console.

The simplest route for a Steam library is Steam Link. For a more configurable setup that can expose Steam, individual games and desktop applications, install Sunshine on the PC and use Moonlight on the phone. Start on your home network before attempting internet streaming.

What “streaming PC games to a phone” actually does

This is remote play from your own computer, not cloud gaming. The game remains installed and running on the gaming PC. The PC encodes its video and audio, sends that stream across your network, and receives control input from the phone. Your phone acts as the handheld client.

“When you play a game using Remote Play, video and audio are sent from your gaming PC to another device. Remote input and multiplayer voice are sent back to the gaming PC, all within milliseconds.”

— Valve, Steam Remote Play

Because the computer is doing the rendering, it must be powered on, signed in and able to launch the game whenever you want to play. The phone is not replacing the PC’s graphics hardware; it is displaying the result and forwarding input.

What you need before starting

  • A gaming PC with the game installed and enough performance to run it normally.
  • A phone supported by the streaming app you choose. Valve lists Android phones and tablets and Apple mobile devices among Steam Link clients; check the current store listing for the exact device and operating-system requirements.
  • The gaming PC and phone connected to the same home network for the first pairing and test.
  • A reliable wireless connection for the phone. Moonlight recommends good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) on the client side.
  • Preferably, an Ethernet connection from the gaming PC to the router. Moonlight identifies a wired host connection as part of a good streaming setup.
  • A compatible Bluetooth or USB-C controller if touch controls are unsuitable. A controller is optional for testing.

Keep the PC awake, make sure the intended game appears in the relevant library or host application, and close downloads or other heavy network activity during your first test.

Choose between Steam Link and Moonlight with Sunshine

Decision point Steam Link Moonlight with Sunshine
Best starting point A library made primarily of Steam games A mix of Steam games, non-Steam games and PC applications
Host software Steam running on the gaming PC Sunshine, the Moonlight project’s recommended open-source host
Phone software Steam Link Moonlight
Initial connection Pair the phone with a computer running Steam on the same home network Find the Sunshine PC in Moonlight and confirm a pairing PIN on the PC
Adding software Games available through Steam’s interface Sunshine includes Steam and a remote-desktop entry; other programs can be added manually
Internet play Requires a reachable, running Steam host and whatever network access the current Steam Link setup supports Sunshine provides a UPnP option, with additional documented approaches for other network situations
Configuration emphasis Fewer host components and a simpler Steam-focused flow More control over applications, host settings and network access

Neither option removes the requirement for a running and reachable gaming PC. If you only want to play Steam titles and value the shortest setup, try Steam Link first. If you want to launch programs outside Steam or tune a dedicated host, Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the more flexible route.

Route 1: Set up Steam Link

1. Prepare Steam on the gaming PC

  1. Turn on the gaming PC and sign in to Steam.
  2. Confirm that the game you want to play is installed and available in the Steam library.
  3. Connect the PC and phone to the same home network. Valve’s Android and Apple support guidance recommends this arrangement for initial setup.

2. Install Steam Link on the phone

Install the Steam Link app from the phone’s official app store. Valve lists Android phones and tablets and Apple mobile devices as supported client categories. Android support documentation lists Android 5.0 and newer, but app compatibility can change, so use the current store listing for your specific device and operating-system version.

3. Pair the phone with the host

  1. Open Steam Link and follow its current pairing prompts.
  2. Select the computer running Steam when it appears.
  3. Enter or confirm any pairing code shown by the app and the PC.
  4. Allow the app to test the connection if it offers that option.

Labels and screens can change between app versions, so follow the controls shown in your installation rather than a screenshot from an older guide.

4. Launch and control a game

  1. Start the Steam Link session.
  2. Choose the game from Steam’s displayed library.
  3. Use the phone’s touch controls for a quick test, or pair a compatible gamepad before launching.

For a first attempt, choose a game whose menus are easy to navigate. This separates pairing and network problems from games that require unusually precise controls.

5. If the Steam Link picture stutters

  • Move the phone close to the router and test again.
  • Pause large downloads, video streams and other competing traffic.
  • Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet if possible.
  • Repeat the local test before changing several settings at once.

These measures can improve conditions but cannot guarantee smooth play on every phone, router or wireless environment.

Route 2: Use Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is the phone client; Sunshine is the host running on the gaming PC. The Moonlight project identifies Sunshine as its recommended open-source host. This combination is useful when you want to expose Steam, individual games or other applications instead of limiting yourself to one storefront.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for iPhone, Apple, Android & Xbox Cloud Gaming, Bluetooth Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks, 2 Pro Back Buttons, Officially Licensed (Black)
  • Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  • Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
  • Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.

1. Install both components

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC.
  2. Install Moonlight on the phone’s official app store.
  3. Keep the PC awake and connect it and the phone to the same home network.

2. Find and pair the PC locally

  1. Open Moonlight on the phone and look for the Sunshine computer.
  2. Select the computer to begin pairing.
  3. Moonlight displays a PIN; enter or confirm that PIN in Sunshine on the PC.
  4. Wait for the host to appear as paired before attempting an internet connection.

Local pairing is the simplest diagnostic step. If the phone cannot see the PC at home, solve that discovery or firewall problem before adding remote-access complexity.

3. Start a game or application

Sunshine includes Steam and a remote-desktop entry. Select Steam to browse and launch the Steam library, or use the desktop entry when you need access to a program that is not listed as a game.

If a title does not appear, use the Moonlight setup guide’s procedure for adding a program to Sunshine manually. The exact host interface can change, so record the program’s correct executable and launch arguments from the installation rather than copying settings for a different game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Tune the stream conservatively

Moonlight lets you choose stream resolution and frame rate. Start with settings your PC, phone and network can sustain, then increase quality one setting at a time. A higher resolution or frame rate increases the amount of video the host must encode and the network must carry; the official guidance does not promise a particular latency or image quality for an individual setup.

Build a network that can carry the stream

Use local streaming as the baseline

Test in the same room as the router first. A strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 link to the phone and Ethernet from the gaming PC to the router are Moonlight’s recommended conditions for a good experience. They are recommendations, not a guarantee: walls, radio interference, router load, phone hardware and other traffic still affect the result.

Reduce avoidable congestion

  • Pause large file transfers, game downloads and high-bitrate video on the same network.
  • Keep the phone within reliable range of the access point instead of testing at the edge of coverage.
  • Prefer the 5 GHz band when it is available and stable.
  • Use Ethernet for the host PC when practical; this removes one wireless hop from the stream.

Understand what “good performance” means

A streaming session has two directions: video and audio travel to the phone, while controller or touch input travels back to the PC. A connection can have high bandwidth yet still feel poor if interference causes retransmissions or if delay varies sharply. Do not treat a provider speed-test number as a complete prediction of game responsiveness.

Stream outside your home

Once local play works, you can investigate playing from another network. Remote access is more involved because the phone must reach the host through your home router and, in some cases, through a carrier or workplace network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moonlight and Sunshine remote access

Sunshine offers a UPnP option, and the Moonlight setup documentation describes alternatives and troubleshooting for port forwarding, IPv6, carrier-grade NAT and restricted networks. The correct method depends on your router, internet provider and the network where the phone is located.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for Android devices, Black | Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller with Hall Effect Joysticks and Hall Triggers
  • Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons
  • Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
  1. Confirm that local Moonlight pairing and gameplay work first.
  2. Read the current Moonlight remote-streaming instructions for your network type.
  3. Enable only the access method you understand, such as the documented UPnP option or a carefully configured alternative.
  4. Test from a separate connection, such as mobile data, while the PC remains powered on and Sunshine is running.
  5. If the network uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks the required traffic, use the documented virtual-network approach or another supported method; some networks will not permit direct streaming.

Remote streaming can fail even when local play is perfect. That does not necessarily indicate a problem with the game or phone; the intervening networks may block discovery or inbound traffic.

Steam Link away from home

Steam Link also depends on the gaming PC being on, signed in and reachable. Start with Valve’s local pairing flow, then consult the current Steam Link interface and support guidance for remote-play behavior on your phone and network. Do not assume that a setup that works on home Wi-Fi is automatically reachable from the internet.

Connect a controller to your phone

Touch controls are useful for confirming that streaming works, but a physical controller is usually more comfortable for action games, racing titles and games designed for a gamepad. A Bluetooth or USB-C controller is optional; verify compatibility before buying or connecting one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check compatibility first

  • Confirm the phone’s operating-system version and whether it supports the controller’s Bluetooth or USB mode.
  • For a USB-C controller, check the connector orientation, phone clearance and whether the phone can provide the required power.
  • Confirm that the streaming client accepts the controller’s input on your operating system.
  • Check the controller’s dimensions and mounting method if it physically grips the phone.

Moonlight documents Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Bluetooth controller support on iOS and tvOS 13 or later. Earlier iOS and tvOS releases are more limited to MFi controllers. Android behavior varies by phone, operating-system version and controller, so test the exact combination.

Pair and test

  1. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode, or connect it by USB-C.
  2. Pair it in the phone’s Bluetooth or USB settings before opening the streaming app.
  3. Open Steam Link or Moonlight and verify that the game receives movement and button input.
  4. If buttons are mapped incorrectly, check the app’s current controller settings and the game’s own input configuration.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The phone cannot find the PC

  • Make sure both devices are on the same home network, not one on a guest network.
  • Confirm that Steam is signed in for Steam Link or that Sunshine is running for Moonlight.
  • Check that the PC is awake rather than asleep or hibernating.
  • Restart the host application and the phone app, then repeat local pairing.
  • For Moonlight, verify that the PIN is entered in Sunshine on the correct PC.

The game launches but the image is unstable

  • Test next to the router to distinguish coverage problems from host or game problems.
  • Stop competing network traffic.
  • Use Ethernet for the PC and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone when available.
  • Lower the Moonlight stream resolution or frame rate, then retest.

Input does not work

  • Check that the controller is paired with the phone rather than the PC or another nearby device.
  • Reconnect the controller before starting the stream.
  • Test touch input to determine whether the stream works independently of the gamepad.
  • Review the streaming app’s current controller mapping and the game’s input settings.

Local play works but internet play fails

  • Confirm the PC is still powered on and the host service is running.
  • Review the current Moonlight instructions for UPnP, port forwarding, IPv6 and carrier-grade NAT.
  • Check whether the remote network blocks the required traffic.
  • Return to local play after each network change so you know which configuration introduced the failure.

Make the setup reliable

  • Use a dedicated host account or lock the PC when you are not playing, especially before enabling remote access.
  • Keep the phone, streaming client and host software updated through their normal distribution channels.
  • Do not expose router services broadly; use the narrowest documented remote-access configuration that works for your network.
  • Keep the PC’s display, audio and power settings from interrupting the session. A sleep or hibernate event ends the stream.
  • Start with one game and one local network test. Add remote access, a controller and higher-quality settings only after the basic path is stable.

Which route should you use?

Choose Steam Link when your games are in Steam and you want the fewest host components. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when you need non-Steam programs, a remote desktop entry or more control over host and network configuration. In either case, the phone is only the handheld client: the gaming PC must remain available, and network quality determines how responsive the result feels.
