The simplest low-latency setup is Steam Link: run Steam on the gaming PC, install Steam Link on an Android 5.0-or-newer phone, pair the devices on the same home network, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet, and use the router’s 5 GHz band for the phone. Add a compatible controller for games that do not map well to touch. If you need a separate host/client arrangement, Moonlight for Android with Sunshine is a documented alternative.
No app can guarantee a fixed delay for every phone, game, router, and controller. The practical goal is to remove avoidable delay and variance by improving the wired host connection, wireless signal, encoding and decoding load, and input path.
What “low latency” means when streaming a PC game
Game streaming sends rendered frames from the PC to the phone, decodes them on the phone, displays them, and sends your touch or controller input back to the PC. Delay can be introduced at every stage:
- Game and render time: the PC must produce a frame before it can be encoded.
- Encoding: the host compresses the frame into a video stream.
- Network transit: packets travel from the PC to the router, across Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and to the phone.
- Decoding and display: the Android device reconstructs the frame and presents it on its screen.
- Input return: controller or touch input travels back to the PC and is processed by the game.
Stutter is often a consistency problem rather than a raw-speed problem. A connection with plenty of advertised bandwidth can still feel poor if it has interference, packet loss, sudden latency spikes, or a busy host encoder. That is why a stable local network and an efficient host configuration matter more than chasing a single headline speed.

Official Steam and Moonlight documentation does not provide a universal end-to-end latency number for Android phones. Your result depends on the PC’s encoder, the phone’s decoder and display, the game, controller, router, and local network conditions.
Choose the streaming method
Steam Link: the shortest path for Steam games
Steam Link is Valve’s client app for Android. Valve states that it runs on Android 5.0 and newer. The PC must be on with Steam running, and the initial pairing should take place on the same home network. This is the best first attempt when your games are already managed by Steam and you want the fewest components to configure.
Moonlight with Sunshine: a separate host and client
Moonlight is an Android streaming client that supports standard Android-mapped gamepads. Sunshine is a self-hosted game-stream host that can run on a PC. This combination is useful when you are comfortable configuring a host application separately from the Android client or when you want to stream a broader desktop and game library through that host. It is not established as categorically faster than Steam Link; choose it for its setup model and features rather than an assumed speed advantage.

Wire the gaming PC to the router
Connect the host PC directly to the router with Ethernet whenever possible. Valve recommends wired networking for the best Steam Link experience, and Moonlight’s guidance likewise favors a wired host. This removes one wireless hop and avoids having the PC compete with the phone for airtime.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android phone
Connect the phone to the router’s 5 GHz network instead of 2.4 GHz when the signal is strong. Valve notes that 5 GHz generally has less interference from nearby networks and devices, although its range is shorter. Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for the client. If the phone is at the edge of coverage, a stable 2.4 GHz signal can be preferable to a weak 5 GHz signal; move closer to the access point before deciding that the band itself is the problem.
Keep the first test on one private home network
Start with the phone and PC on the same ordinary home network. Guest networks, public networks, school or workplace networks, and routers with client isolation can prevent the devices from discovering or contacting each other. Valve specifically says client isolation must be disabled for Remote Play. Do not use a guest SSID for the initial pairing.
Reduce local congestion
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, and other traffic while testing.
- Keep the phone within reliable range of the access point; a strong signal is more valuable than a nominal Wi-Fi standard.
- If several access points share the same name, verify that the phone is actually connected to the intended 5 GHz radio.
- When a new router is being considered, treat it as a conditional fix for inadequate coverage, interference, or old Wi-Fi hardware—not a requirement for every setup.
Set up Steam Link step by step
- Start the host: turn on the PC that runs the games, launch Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the phone: join the phone to the same private home network as the PC. Prefer the 5 GHz band with a strong signal.
- Install the client: install Steam Link from Google Play or use Valve’s listed Android distribution route. Open the app and follow its on-screen pairing instructions.
- Complete pairing: select the detected Steam computer and enter any pairing code the app displays. If the PC is not found, confirm that Steam is running, both devices are on the same network, and the router is not isolating wireless clients.
- Check the host connection: if possible, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet before testing a game.
- Choose an input method: pair a supported controller or test the app’s touch controls. Touch controls can work for menus and simple games but are often awkward for games designed around physical sticks, triggers, or many simultaneous buttons.
- Launch a game: start with a title that is easy to pause and observe. Move the phone, try several scenes, and note whether the problem is constant delay, intermittent stutter, dropped connection, or input recognition.
Valve describes Steam Link for Android as extending Steam Link functionality to many Android phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 and newer. Android version alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate or image quality; decoding capability and display behavior still vary by phone.
Controller choices and compatibility
A controller is optional, but it often makes streamed PC games substantially easier to play. Valve lists Xbox One S and Razer Kishi among supported inputs and lists DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher. Other controllers may work, but Valve does not classify every model as officially supported.

- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Before pairing
- Check the phone’s Android version against the controller’s requirements. The DualShock 4 qualification is Android 9.0 or newer.
- Confirm whether the controller connects by Bluetooth, USB, or a phone-mounted connector and whether your phone has the required port or clearance.
- Update the controller firmware if its manufacturer provides an update path.
- Pair the controller with the phone before launching the stream, then verify that the game sees the intended buttons and sticks.
When touch controls are enough
Touch controls are reasonable for turn-based games, menus, strategy titles with limited real-time input, and short tests. They are less suitable for racing, fighting, first-person, and action games where an imprecise virtual stick or an obstructed screen creates more practical delay than the network itself.
Configure Steam for a responsive stream
Check encoding and decoding in the performance overlay
Steam’s performance overlay can show which encoder and decoder are active. Use it while reproducing the problem rather than relying on a single impression. If the host is falling back to software encoding or the phone is struggling to decode, network changes alone will not remove the bottleneck.
Enable hardware encoding when supported
In Steam’s Remote Play advanced host options, enable hardware encoding when the host supports it. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load and make frame delivery more consistent, but support depends on the PC’s graphics hardware and drivers. If enabling it creates artifacts or instability, compare with the previous setting and update the graphics driver before treating the feature as a universal requirement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLower the game’s resolution when the host is overloaded
Valve’s troubleshooting guidance suggests reducing game resolution when streaming performance is poor. Lowering resolution reduces the amount of work the game and encoder must perform and can also reduce the stream’s data rate. Apply the change to the game first, then retest the same scene so you can tell whether the bottleneck was rendering or networking.

Try disabling vertical sync as a troubleshooting step
Valve also suggests turning off vertical sync when diagnosing Remote Play problems. V-sync can change how frames are scheduled and may add waiting in some configurations, but disabling it can introduce tearing. Treat it as an experiment: compare responsiveness and frame pacing, and restore it if the visual result is worse.
Use the overlay to separate symptoms
- Network-related spikes: inconsistent delivery, freezes, or sudden quality changes while the host frame rate remains stable.
- Host-render or encode load: slow game frames, high PC utilization, or an encoder that cannot keep up.
- Phone decode or display limits: the stream arrives consistently but the phone drops frames or remains behind during complex scenes.
- Input path problems: the picture is smooth but button presses arrive late, are missing, or are mapped incorrectly.
Diagnose lag in a repeatable order
- Reproduce one symptom: test the same game area for several minutes. Decide whether you are seeing steady delay, periodic stutter, blurry quality changes, disconnects, or incorrect controls.
- Confirm the topology: PC to router by Ethernet, phone on strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi, both on the same private network.
- Inspect the overlay: identify the active encoder and decoder and watch for frame or network warnings.
- Remove competing traffic: pause downloads and backups, then retest without changing game settings.
- Reduce host work: enable supported hardware encoding, lower game resolution, or test with vertical sync disabled, one change at a time.
- Test the input separately: use the controller in another Android game or menu to distinguish Bluetooth, USB, or mapping issues from stream delay.
- Move the phone closer: if performance improves immediately, coverage or interference is more likely than the Steam client itself.
- Restore changes selectively: once the stream is stable, re-enable visual settings or reconnect other network traffic individually so you know which change caused a regression.
Common failure modes and fixes
The PC does not appear during pairing
- Verify that Steam is open and signed in on the host.
- Confirm that the phone and PC are on the same home network, not separate guest or isolated SSIDs.
- Disable client isolation on the router for the private network, as Valve requires for Remote Play.
- Temporarily stop VPNs or network-filtering software that prevents local-device discovery, then test again.
The stream connects but stutters
- Wire the PC to the router.
- Move the phone nearer to the access point and use 5 GHz if the signal remains strong.
- Pause other traffic and watch Steam’s performance overlay.
- Check hardware encoding, then test a lower game resolution or vertical sync disabled as separate troubleshooting changes.
The picture is clear but controls feel delayed
- Use a physical controller for games that require precise or rapid input.
- Check the controller’s Android compatibility and button mapping.
- Test the controller close to the phone and remove competing Bluetooth devices.
- Compare a wired controller connection, where supported, to Bluetooth to isolate the wireless input path.
The connection drops on a school, work, hotel, or guest network
Those networks commonly block device-to-device traffic or enforce client isolation. Steam Link and Moonlight are easiest to validate on a private home network that you control. If the network administrator does not permit local-device communication, changing app settings cannot reliably overcome that policy.

- Prepare the PC host: install Sunshine on the gaming PC and complete its host configuration according to the project’s current documentation.
- Prepare the network: connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet where possible. Put the Android phone on strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi; Moonlight documents Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) as suitable client targets.
- Install Moonlight: install the Android client and allow it to discover the host on the same local network.
- Pair the devices: select the Sunshine host in Moonlight and complete the displayed pairing process.
- Configure the stream: begin with conservative resolution and frame-rate settings, then increase quality only after the connection remains stable.
- Connect the controller: use a gamepad with standard Android button mapping and verify its layout in the game.
- Monitor consistency: Sunshine’s troubleshooting guidance emphasizes low latency variance and minimal packet loss. A route that is fast on average but unstable can feel worse than a slower, consistent route.
Moonlight’s documentation and Sunshine’s troubleshooting guidance are maintained as project documentation and can change independently of a formal Android release. Check the current instructions when menus or pairing behavior differ from these general steps.

When buying hardware can help
Android controller
A phone-mounted or Bluetooth Android controller is the most direct accessory upgrade when touch controls are the limiting factor. Check exact phone dimensions, Android version, connection method, and game compatibility before buying. Valve’s named support examples are Xbox One S, Razer Kishi, and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer; support for an unlisted model is not guaranteed.
5 GHz-capable router
A router upgrade is justified when the existing unit lacks usable 5 GHz coverage, has poor client isolation controls, or cannot provide a stable path to the phone. Moonlight’s guidance points to Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 for the client, while Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. Do not replace a router before testing Ethernet to the PC, phone placement, congestion, and isolation settings; those are often the actual bottlenecks.
A practical checklist before each session
- PC is awake, Steam or Sunshine is running, and the game is ready.
- PC is connected to the router by Ethernet when possible.
- Phone is on the private 5 GHz network with a strong signal.
- Router client isolation is disabled for the gaming network.
- Large downloads, backups, and uploads are paused.
- Controller is charged, paired, and mapped correctly, or touch controls are enabled.
- Hardware encoding is enabled when supported and stable.
- The game is using a resolution that the host can render and encode consistently.
- Steam’s performance overlay or the host/client diagnostics are available if a problem appears.
What results to expect
A well-configured local network can make streamed games feel responsive, but it will not turn every Android phone into a wired gaming monitor. Screen refresh behavior, decode time, Bluetooth controller delay, game frame pacing, and the physical distance to the access point all remain part of the experience. Competitive games that demand the smallest possible input-to-display interval are less forgiving than slower single-player or turn-based titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate the setup with the game and phone you actually intend to use. If the stream is consistently smooth but still feels too delayed for a particular competitive title, that is a limitation of the complete input-and-display chain rather than proof that a different app will always solve it.
