Yes—an experimental homebrew project called streamer-ds can send a PC desktop to a Nintendo DS-family handheld over Wi‑Fi. It does not install or run PC games on the DSi. The game remains on the computer, which repeatedly captures screenshots, reduces them to DSi-sized bitmaps, compresses them and sends them to the handheld.
That distinction matters: the documented timings are about 0.6 seconds per 256-pixel frame or 0.3 seconds per 128-pixel frame. The result is suitable for a technical demonstration or remote desktop glimpse, not responsive game streaming. This guide explains the documented setup, the limits you should expect and the alternatives that better fit interactive play.

What the DSi streaming setup actually does
The streamer-ds design is a screenshot transport, not a conventional low-latency video stream. The PC captures its current desktop image, scales it to one of the project’s supported widths, converts it to 16-bit raw bitmap data with LZ77 compression, sends the compressed frame to the handheld and waits for an acknowledgement before repeating the process.
The game therefore executes entirely on the PC. The DSi is acting as a small Wi‑Fi display. Closing the PC game, losing the network or stopping the desktop script stops the images on the handheld; nothing has been copied to the DSi for native execution.

Reported frame timing and image size
The project documentation, whose page was modified in 2024, reports the following figures. They are project-reported measurements rather than independent laboratory tests.
| Mode | Reported transfer interval | Approximate equivalent rate | Typical compressed frame | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256-pixel scale | About 0.6 seconds per frame | About 1.7 frames per second | 10–20 kB | More detail, but obvious slideshow-like motion |
| 128-pixel scale | About 0.3 seconds per frame | About 3.3 frames per second | 5–10 kB | Faster updates, with substantially less detail |
| Uncompressed bitmap attempt | Slower than the compressed modes | Not stated | Around 80 kB | Wi‑Fi became the bottleneck |
Even the faster figure is many times slower than normal game-streaming targets. A moving camera, scrolling game or rapidly changing scene will appear as a sequence of still images rather than continuous motion.
Why input is not practical for games
The project also describes an alternative input-capturing build. It sampled controls only once per displayed frame—about every 0.3 seconds in that version. That delay is too large for reliable platforming, aiming, menu navigation or any game that expects immediate button response. The project points to pc-controller-ds for input capture without video, but that is a separate use case and does not turn streamer-ds into a responsive game-streaming client.
What you need before trying it
- A homebrew-capable Nintendo DSi or another DS-family handheld. The project distributes an
.ndsapplication. The available overview does not establish which current DSi firmware versions, launch methods or individual DSi models are compatible, so verify those details against the project package and your existing homebrew setup before changing the console. - The streamer-ds handheld application. The GameBrew listing identifies the application version as 2018, with application metadata updated on 2018-07-30 and the page modified on 2024-08-21. That page history does not by itself prove active maintenance or current-firmware compatibility.
- A computer running the desktop client. The documented workflow uses a Python file named
desktop_client.py. The PC must be able to capture the desktop and create a local Wi‑Fi hotspot. - A temporary Wi‑Fi network. The guide’s basic flow uses a hotspot created by a laptop. The DSi app listens on port
8080, and the Python client connects to that port. - Homebrew storage already supported by your setup. The overview does not specify a required SD-card format, capacity or particular flashcart. Do not buy a card on the assumption that streamer-ds needs a stated capacity; use the storage method your existing DSi homebrew installation documents.
Have a second device available for checking the hotspot if necessary. Because the guide is old, the names and security options shown by a modern operating system may differ from its screenshots.

Network safety: use an isolated test hotspot
The older guide describes a laptop hotspot and says the DS supports only WEP in its hotspot instructions. WEP is obsolete and should not be treated as a safe network for ordinary internet access. If you follow that legacy workflow, keep the hotspot temporary and isolated:
- Do not bridge it to your home or office LAN unless you understand the exposure.
- Use it only while testing the DSi and PC.
- Keep file sharing, printer sharing and other services off on that interface.
- Stop broadcasting and disable the hotspot immediately after the session.
Whether a current operating system can create the exact WEP network described by the guide depends on its Wi‑Fi driver and hotspot software. If your computer cannot create a network the DSi can join, that is a compatibility problem with the legacy networking method—not evidence that the game stream itself is misconfigured.
Documented setup: step by step
1. Prepare the handheld application
- Obtain the streamer-ds
.ndsfile from the project’s distribution and place it wherever your existing DS homebrew launcher expects applications. - Confirm that your normal homebrew launcher can start other
.ndsprograms before troubleshooting networking. The available overview does not give a universal installation path for every DSi model, firmware revision or storage method. - Start the DSi application and leave it at its connection screen while you create the hotspot.
2. Create the laptop hotspot
- On the laptop, create a dedicated hotspot for the test. The original guide gives Ubuntu-specific instructions; current desktop environments may use different menu labels.
- Choose a simple network name and password that the DSi can enter. If the DSi only accepts the legacy security mode described by the guide, use it only for this isolated session and turn the hotspot off afterwards.
- Record the laptop’s address on the hotspot interface. The desktop client needs the address assigned to the laptop on this private network, not an internet-facing address.
3. Join the hotspot from the DSi
- In streamer-ds, select the hotspot you just created and enter its network credentials.
- Wait for the application to report a connection. The app opens port
8080on the handheld side of the connection. - Keep the DSi and laptop close enough for a stable signal during testing. A weak link will make the already-slow frame cycle take longer.
4. Start the PC client
- Open a terminal in the directory containing
desktop_client.py. - Run the script with the Python interpreter installed on your computer—for example,
python3 desktop_client.pyon systems that use thepython3command, or the equivalent Python command on your operating system. - When prompted by the script, provide the DSi’s hotspot address and port
8080, following the project’s own argument or prompt format. - Allow the script through the operating system firewall on the private hotspot interface if a permission prompt appears. Do not open the service to the public internet.
The overview confirms the order—launch the .nds application, connect it to the hotspot, then run desktop_client.py—but does not publish a universal command-line syntax. Use the script’s included help or readme for any required arguments.
5. Choose a scale and observe the result
- Start with the 128-pixel option. It produces smaller frames and the project reports a shorter interval, making it the more plausible mode for a first test.
- Switch to 256 pixels if you need to read small desktop text or inspect a static image. Expect roughly twice the interval reported for the lower-resolution mode.
- Open a stationary desktop window first. Once you can see updates, try a game menu or a paused game before testing motion.
6. Stop cleanly
- Exit the Python client on the PC.
- Close streamer-ds on the DSi.
- Disable the hotspot and remove any temporary firewall rule you created for the test.
What performance will feel like
Motion and latency
At approximately 0.6 seconds per 256-pixel frame, an action can change substantially before the next image arrives. At approximately 0.3 seconds per 128-pixel frame, the image refreshes more often but still updates only a few times per second. Those intervals include the project’s capture, compression, transfer and acknowledgement cycle; they are not a promise of a fixed latency on every computer or wireless adapter.

- Dual 3.25-inch screen
- Download exclusive games, clocks and calendars via the Nintendo DSi Shop
- Take pictures using either an inward or outward facing camera and chose from 11 different lenses to customize your shots
- Connect wirelessly to browse the internet, share photos and play with others
- Access your music in the AAC format off any standard SD Card
There is no documented compatibility test for a particular PC game, DSi model, resolution or firmware. A title that is readable when paused may be unusable once the camera moves. Do not interpret a successful desktop image as proof that a game will be playable.
Image detail
The 256-pixel mode sends larger compressed frames—typically 10–20 kB according to the project—while the 128-pixel mode generally sends 5–10 kB. Text, inventory icons and other fine details are easier to distinguish at the larger scale, but the slower refresh makes interactive use even less practical. The uncompressed experiment reached around 80 kB per frame and was slower because the DS Wi‑Fi link became the limiting factor.
Controls
Streamer-ds should be treated as display-only for serious testing. The project’s frame-sampled input build checked controls about every 0.3 seconds in that version, which is not a dependable control loop for PC games. If your objective is to use the DSi as a controller rather than a display, investigate the project’s separate pc-controller-ds direction instead of expecting the video client to provide both functions.

Common failure points and fixes
The DSi will not start the .nds file
- Confirm that other homebrew applications launch from the same storage and menu.
- Check that the file was copied without renaming its extension or placing it in a directory your launcher cannot browse.
- Do not assume a newer DSi firmware is supported. The available project overview does not document a current firmware matrix; consult the project’s package notes and your homebrew method before changing firmware.
The DSi cannot see or join the hotspot
- Verify that the hotspot is broadcasting on a mode and band the DSi can use.
- Recheck the network name, password and legacy security setting described by the guide.
- Temporarily move the devices close together and remove other clients from the hotspot.
- If the operating system no longer offers the required legacy security mode, try a separate isolated access point that explicitly supports the DSi’s wireless requirements rather than weakening your household network.
The Python client cannot connect
- Use the laptop’s hotspot-interface address, not its public address or a VPN address.
- Confirm that streamer-ds is still running and listening on port
8080. - Permit the script on the private hotspot interface in the firewall.
- Check that no other application has taken the same local port and that the hotspot has not assigned a new address after reconnecting.
The image appears once and then freezes
- Wait for the acknowledgement cycle; the project is designed to send a frame and wait before sending the next.
- Test the 128-pixel mode and reduce other traffic on the hotspot.
- Keep the PC awake and prevent the game or desktop from switching displays while the script is capturing.
- Stop and restart both ends if the hotspot changed addresses.
The display is visible but games are uncontrollable
This is expected at the documented frame intervals and input-sampling rate. It is not a setting that can be corrected by choosing a different PC game. Use streamer-ds for viewing a mostly static desktop or demonstration, not as a replacement for a low-latency streaming client.

How this compares with other ways to use a DSi
| Route | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| streamer-ds | Experimental desktop screenshots sent over Wi‑Fi to a DS-family handheld | Project-reported frame intervals of about 0.3–0.6 seconds; input is not responsive enough for practical game control |
| Moonlight on a supported client | Interactive PC game streaming on the client platforms listed by the Moonlight project | The published client list does not include Nintendo DSi; the project recommends Sunshine as the host |
| Pre-converted local video | Playback of a prepared file from DS/DSi storage using a compatible homebrew player | It is not live, interactive PC streaming |
Moonlight’s published client list includes PC, mobile, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch and Wii U, among other platforms. The project describes the Vita, Switch and Wii U versions as community ports. Support for those devices must not be interpreted as support for DSi.
Using the DSi for prepared video instead
If your goal is to watch footage on the DSi rather than control a game live, converting the recording first is a better fit for the hardware. DS-Homebrew lists these player and format combinations:
| Player | Format and codec | Listed maximum |
|---|---|---|
| FastVideoDS | .fv |
Up to 60 fps in DSi mode |
| Rocket Video Player | .rvid |
Up to 72 fps |
| Moonshell | .dpg, MPEG-1 |
Up to 24 fps |
| tuna-viDS | .avi, Xvid |
Up to 15 fps |
| MPEG4Player | .mp4, MPEG-4 |
Up to 24 fps |
These are player capability entries, not evidence that streamer-ds can output any of those codecs. DS-Homebrew also cautions that the real maximum frame rate varies with video content and length. The normal workflow is to convert the recording on a computer, copy the resulting file to the storage used by your homebrew setup and play it locally.

Decision checklist
- Choose streamer-ds if you want to experiment with a DSi displaying a PC desktop and accept a few frames per second.
- Choose a supported Moonlight client if responsive PC game control is the priority.
- Choose pre-converted video playback if you only need to watch a recording on the DSi.
- Do not buy a specific SD card, capture device or gaming accessory on the assumption that streamer-ds requires one; the documented setup calls for a laptop hotspot and a PC script, while storage requirements are not specified.
- Plan to verify your exact DSi firmware, homebrew launcher, storage method and wireless compatibility separately, because the available streamer-ds overview does not establish those current details.
Bottom line
A homebrew route does exist, but it is best described as periodic compressed desktop screenshots rather than live PC-game streaming. The documented streamer-ds workflow can demonstrate a PC image on a Nintendo DSi over a temporary hotspot, with roughly 1.7 frames per second at 256-pixel scale or 3.3 frames per second at 128-pixel scale. For an actual playable stream, use a client platform supported by a low-latency streaming project; for the DSi, use local video playback when watching—not controlling—a recording.
