Yes. Steam Remote Play lets a Linux desktop act as the client for a game running on another computer. The host PC launches and renders the game, captures its video and audio, and sends that stream across your network; the Linux desktop displays it and sends keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input back to the host. The game does not need to run natively on Linux.

For the most reliable setup, update Steam on both computers, sign in to the same account, launch the game once on the host, and choose Stream in the Linux desktop’s Steam Library. Use Ethernet for the first test when possible. If the host is missing, work through subnet, firewall, port, and router-isolation checks before changing game settings.

What Steam Remote Play is—and what it is not

Remote Play is a host-and-client arrangement rather than a Linux compatibility layer. The computer that has the game installed is the host. It runs the game, performs the rendering, encodes the resulting video, and supplies audio. Your Linux desktop is the client: Steam decodes the stream, shows the game window, and forwards your controls.

Computer What it does What must be true
Host PC Runs the game and sends captured video and audio Steam can launch the title and the host firewall allows Steam’s streaming traffic
Linux desktop Receives video and audio and returns keyboard, mouse, or controller input Steam is current, signed in to the same account, and connected to the host over a usable network

Because the host runs the game, a Windows-only title can be streamed to Linux even when that title has no native Linux build. Steam describes any two computers connected to Steam as usable for streaming, but that is not a guarantee that every game, graphics driver, or hardware combination will be trouble-free. The host still has to start the game successfully.

Remote Play is also different from Steam Play. Steam Play concerns attempting to run some Windows games directly on Linux, with limitations. Remote Play leaves the game process on the other computer and transports its output to Linux.

What you need before starting

  • A host computer with the game installed and able to launch it through Steam.
  • A Linux desktop with the current Steam client installed.
  • Steam signed in on both computers with the same account.
  • A network path between the two computers. Ethernet is the preferred first test; a clear 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection can work when cabling is impractical.
  • Permission for Steam to communicate through the host computer’s firewall on the documented streaming ports.

Steam’s interface labels and supported hardware can change. If a label differs from the one below, look for the equivalent Remote Play or streaming setting in the current Steam client rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

Set up the host and Linux client

  1. Prepare the host. On the computer where the game is installed, open Steam, sign in, and launch the game at least once. This confirms that the title is installed, updated, and able to reach its initial playable state on that machine. Exit the game after it starts.
  2. Update both Steam clients. Install any pending Steam client updates on the host and on the Linux desktop. Mismatched or outdated clients can make discovery and decoding problems harder to diagnose.
  3. Sign in on Linux with the same account. Start Steam on the Linux desktop and use the account that owns or otherwise has access to the game on the host. Remote Play is tied to the Steam account session, not merely to two computers being on the same home network.
  4. Open the Linux Library. Find the game that is installed on the remote host. Steam’s instructions indicate that the library entry should show Stream instead of Play when the remote installation is available.
  5. Start the stream. Select Stream. The host launches the game, while the Linux desktop opens the streamed picture and audio. Test the controls immediately: move through a menu, press a few keys, and verify that sound reaches the Linux desktop.
  6. Make a clean network test. For the first session, connect the host to the router by Ethernet. Connect the Linux desktop by Ethernet too if practical. A direct wired path removes much of the interference and signal variation that can make a wireless test inconclusive.
  7. Only then tune quality. Once the basic session works, adjust quality, bandwidth, resolution, or visual settings for your own network. Changing several variables before confirming that discovery and input work can hide the original fault.

Choose the network connection that fits the room

Connection Reliability considerations When to use it
Ethernet Steam recommends a wired network for the best experience. It avoids most radio interference and gives you a stable baseline for troubleshooting. Use it for the initial test and whenever you can run a cable to the router or a suitable wired network switch.
5 GHz Wi-Fi Steam identifies 802.11ac and 802.11n on 5 GHz as options. The band usually has less interference than 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means walls and distance can weaken it. Use a clear, strong 5 GHz connection when wiring is not practical. Actual results depend on the access point, distance, congestion, and building.
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi It can travel farther, but is often more exposed to interference from neighboring networks and household devices. Use only when it is the strongest available path; expect to test quality settings if playback is unstable.
Powerline or other wireless alternatives Steam warns that wireless and powerline networking can produce intermittent failures. Electrical wiring and radio conditions vary widely between homes. Treat these as situational options, not as an assured replacement for Ethernet.

Keep both computers on the same local network for this workflow. Steam says Remote Play is unsupported in most cases on public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, or otherwise isolated networks. Those networks may block peer discovery or the traffic required for the stream even when ordinary web access works.

Configure quality without guessing

Start with the default stream and change one setting at a time. Steam’s network guidance suggests trying Balanced or Fast quality when playback is poor, reducing the bandwidth limit, and lowering the game’s resolution or disabling vertical sync. These are practical vendor recommendations, not guaranteed frame-rate or latency results for a particular computer or router.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

Use the quality preset first

A faster preset generally gives the stream more room to recover from a variable network path, while a higher-quality preset consumes more bandwidth and decoding capacity. If the picture breaks up or controls feel delayed, select Balanced or Fast before changing several game graphics options.

Reduce the amount of data in the stream

If the connection is saturated, lower the streaming bandwidth limit or reduce the host game’s output resolution. Disabling vertical sync can also help in cases where synchronization is contributing to uneven delivery. Make a change, play for several minutes, and observe whether the same scene remains smooth; a short menu test can miss congestion that appears during active gameplay.

Use the performance overlay as evidence

Steam’s performance overlay can show which encoder and decoder are active. That information is useful when deciding whether a problem is primarily network-related or tied to hardware video processing. Record what is shown before and after a change so you can reverse a setting that makes the stream worse.

Fix the most common failures in order

The host game does not appear on Linux

  1. Confirm that Steam is running and signed in on both computers with the same account.
  2. Verify that the game was launched once on the host and that the host is not asleep, offline, or signed out.
  3. Check that both computers are on the same subnet. A guest Wi-Fi network and a main home network can look connected while preventing local discovery.
  4. Inspect the host firewall and allow Steam to listen on the streaming ports: UDP 27031 and 27036, and TCP 27036 and 27037.
  5. Make sure another program is not already using UDP 27036.
  6. Disable router access-point or client isolation. This feature intentionally prevents devices on the same wireless network from contacting each other.

If the computers are on a public, school, workplace, guest, captive-portal, or similarly isolated network, move the test to a private network that you control. Remote Play commonly cannot function through those restrictions.

The stream is choppy or repeatedly disconnects

  1. Connect the host directly to the router with Ethernet. Wire the Linux desktop as well if possible.
  2. If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, use a strong 5 GHz connection and reduce distance or obstructions between the desktop and access point.
  3. Set streaming quality to Balanced or Fast.
  4. Lower the bandwidth limit, reduce the game’s resolution, or disable vertical sync, changing one item at a time.
  5. Check whether another device is consuming the connection during the session. A stream can be stable when the network is quiet and unstable when large transfers begin.

These steps address the path between host and client first. Do not assume that a powerful graphics card can compensate for packet loss or radio interference.

The Linux window is black or the picture smears

  1. Update the graphics drivers on both computers.
  2. On the host’s advanced streaming options, test with hardware encoding disabled.
  3. On the Linux client’s advanced options, test with hardware decoding disabled.
  4. Use the performance overlay to see which encoder and decoder Steam is using, then compare the result after each change.

Hardware encoding and decoding can improve efficiency, but a particular driver or GPU path can also produce a black image or persistent smearing. Test deliberately and keep the setting that produces a stable picture on your hardware.

The game has no sound

  • Check that the host operating system is sending audio to the intended output device.
  • Check Steam’s mute state on the host and the client’s mute or volume state on Linux.
  • Review the host streaming log for audio errors if the local game has sound but the client does not.

Test with a known audible menu or video after changing one audio setting. This distinguishes a muted stream from a game that is itself configured for a different output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controller input does not reach the game

  1. Confirm that Steam recognizes the controller on the Linux client before starting Remote Play.
  2. Start the stream and test keyboard or mouse input. If those work but the controller does not, the problem is likely controller detection or permission rather than the network path.
  3. If the Linux computer is the host rather than the client, verify that Steam has read/write access to /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput. Steam documents this permission requirement for streamed controller input on a Linux host.

Steam also documents that rumble is not supported for Linux machines. A controller can therefore provide buttons and axes while failing to produce vibration; that behavior is a platform limitation, not necessarily a defective controller.

Linux game compatibility: native support is optional for streaming

For this setup, the host’s ability to launch the game is the main game-side requirement. A title does not need a Linux build for the Linux desktop to display it through Remote Play because the Linux machine is decoding a video stream rather than executing the game’s Linux binary.

Steam states that all Steam games can be played by streaming between a user’s computers, while store pages separately identify titles or features associated with Remote Play Together and Steam Link apps. The broad statement should not be read as a promise that every title behaves identically with every driver, overlay, anti-cheat component, controller, or display configuration. Test the specific game on the specific host you intend to use.

Do not confuse Remote Play with Steam Play

Steam’s Linux support information points users to the SteamOS + Linux store category for the current downloadable Linux-supported game list and notes that Steam Play can potentially allow some Windows-only games to run directly on Linux, with limitations. That is a separate path. Steam Play uses Linux compatibility technology on the Linux computer; Remote Play keeps the game process on the host and sends its output to Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Non-Steam games

Games added as non-Steam shortcuts may work in some configurations, but Steam does not officially support them in the same way as games in the Steam library. Treat that arrangement as experimental and troubleshoot the host launch first.

Advanced checks for a stubborn connection

Verify firewall rules precisely

On the host, allow Steam through the operating system firewall for the documented streaming traffic: UDP 27031 and 27036, plus TCP 27036 and 27037. A rule that allows ordinary Steam downloads is not necessarily equivalent to a rule that permits Remote Play. Apply the rule to the private network profile you are actually using, and avoid exposing these ports broadly on untrusted networks.

Check local topology

Look at the IP addresses assigned to both computers and confirm that they belong to the same subnet. If one computer is connected to a guest SSID, a wireless extender configured for isolation, or a separate VLAN, discovery can fail even though both devices have internet access. Disable access-point or client isolation on the router for a private home test.

Separate discovery from streaming quality

If the Linux Library shows Stream but playback is poor, discovery is already working; focus on Ethernet or 5 GHz signal quality, bandwidth, resolution, and encoder or decoder settings. If the game is absent entirely, solve account, host availability, subnet, firewall, port, and isolation problems before changing graphics quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional equipment and practical expectations

You do not need a special Steam Link box or a particular controller for a Linux desktop client. A normal Ethernet cable is optional equipment that can make the first test more reliable, and any controller recognized by Steam on the client may be used; Steam’s supported-device lists vary by Steam Link product and platform. Choose peripherals based on the controls you need rather than treating a specific model as a requirement.

Remote Play also does not turn the Linux desktop into a second copy of the game. The host must remain available, awake, signed in, and capable of rendering the title. Closing Steam on the host, putting it to sleep, or losing the host’s network connection ends the session even if the Linux desktop itself is working normally.

A short repeatable checklist

  • The game launches locally on the host.
  • Steam is updated and signed in with the same account on both computers.
  • The Linux Library shows Stream for the host installation.
  • Both computers are on the same non-isolated private subnet.
  • The host firewall permits UDP 27031 and 27036 and TCP 27036 and 27037.
  • Ethernet is used for the first test, or the Wi-Fi path is a strong 5 GHz connection.
  • Balanced or Fast quality, lower bandwidth, lower resolution, or disabled vertical sync is available if playback is unstable.
  • Video drivers are current, and hardware encoding or decoding can be tested separately if the image is black or smeared.
  • Steam recognizes the controller on the client; Linux-host controller permissions are checked only when Linux is acting as the host.

With those conditions met, selecting Stream in the Linux Steam Library is all that is required to play the host PC’s game from the desktop.
