Yes—you can run a nonstop GTA marathon on YouTube from prerecorded gameplay. The dependable method is to create an encoder-based YouTube live stream, copy its stream key into OBS, add your rights-cleared GTA recordings as a looping or queued media source, and keep the encoder running. YouTube receives the feed as a live broadcast even though the footage was recorded earlier. A local setup stops when its computer, power, storage, or upload connection fails; cloud hosting removes that home-equipment obligation but does not solve copyright or monetization eligibility.
What you need before starting
Prepare the files, channel, and operating environment before opening the public broadcast. A marathon is much easier to recover when every recording, setting, and permission is documented.
Channel access
- YouTube’s current encoder workflow requires a verified channel, no live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. Check the requirements in YouTube Studio immediately before launch because platform rules can change.
- You need an encoder such as OBS, a stable upload connection, and a computer with enough storage and processing capacity to read and encode continuously.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it can send video to that live endpoint until you revoke or replace it.
GTA footage and audio
- Use gameplay you recorded yourself or footage for which you have permission to rebroadcast.
- Clear audio separately. In-game radio, licensed songs, mod audio, role-play server assets, and other participants’ voices can each carry independent rights even when you captured the gameplay.
- Make a rights log listing the source of every video, music track, mod, server asset, and voice recording. Keep permission messages and licence terms with that log.
- Remove or mute material you cannot clear before the marathon. A loop is not automatically approved for commercial use merely because you own the recording.
How the nonstop broadcast works
YouTube does not require the content entering an encoder to have been recorded moments ago. OBS reads a local file, encodes the frames and audio, and sends a continuous feed to the YouTube stream key. When the file reaches its end, OBS can restart it or move to the next file in a queue. YouTube displays and archives the resulting feed as a live broadcast.
That distinction matters for wording and policy. The footage is prerecorded, so describe the event as a prerecorded GTA marathon and publish a schedule rather than implying that a player is currently controlling the game.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create, then Go live. Select the encoder or streaming-software option rather than webcam or mobile.
- Enter a clear title and description, identify the broadcast as a prerecorded marathon, and select the intended visibility. A private or unlisted test is safer than testing on the public event.
- Create the stream and copy the generated stream key. YouTube’s encoder documentation describes the handoff this way: “You’ll create a stream key in YouTube, and then enter it into your encoder.”
- Keep the Live Control Room open. Its preview and health indicators are where you confirm that video and audio are arriving before publishing.
Do not paste the key into screenshots, public chat, or a shared configuration file. If you suspect it leaked, replace or reset it in the stream settings before starting again.
Configure OBS for a looping GTA marathon
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Install and open OBS on the computer that will remain online.
- Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service (or use a custom server if your current YouTube workflow supplies one), and paste the stream key into the key field.
- Open Settings → Output. Select an encoder your computer can sustain for the entire run. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load when available; software encoding may be appropriate when the hardware encoder does not produce the desired result.
- In the video section, set the canvas and output resolution and frame rate to a format your source files and upload connection can sustain. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution recording simply to display a larger number.
- Set a video bitrate that leaves upload headroom for the whole session, then use the keyframe interval and other encoder values shown in YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected format. Requirements and recommendations can change, so do not copy an old preset blindly.
- In Settings → Audio, choose the intended microphone and desktop or media audio devices. Disable unused sources so a stray microphone or notification cannot enter the marathon. Watch the mixer meters for clipping and for long periods of silence.
Add one recording and loop it
- Create a scene for the marathon and choose Add Source → Media Source.
- Select the GTA recording from local storage. Enable the source’s Loop option so playback restarts when the file ends.
- Enable automatic restart or equivalent playback-on-activation behavior if your OBS version offers it. This helps after a scene reload, but it is not a substitute for monitoring.
- Preview the scene. Confirm that the game fills the canvas, the audio meter moves, and there is no black frame or unexpected desktop capture.
Queue several recordings
For a varied marathon, use a playlist-capable media source or another encoder source that can queue multiple files. Put the files in the desired order, test the transition from one file to the next, and decide whether the queue should stop at the last item or restart from the beginning. Keep every queued file on a local disk that will remain mounted; moving or renaming it after the test can produce a missing-media screen.
Match the source instead of forcing it
- If your recordings use different resolutions or frame rates, choose a common output that the computer can encode continuously. A single stable format is preferable to constant reconfiguration.
- Check aspect ratio and crop settings so HUD elements and subtitles are not cut off.
- Use a consistent audio layout. A recording with a different channel arrangement can sound quiet or unbalanced when the queue changes.
- Keep enough free disk space for the operating system, OBS logs, and any local recording you use for verification. A full disk can stop media playback or prevent recovery files from being written.
Test privately before going public
- Start the stream in OBS while the YouTube event is private or unlisted.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview to show moving video and audio. Check that the incoming health indicator remains stable rather than relying on one instant.
- Watch a remote playback device if possible. It can reveal buffering, an incorrect aspect ratio, clipped audio, or a silent source that the local preview hides.
- Let the file reach a natural loop or queue transition. This is where missing paths, a frozen media source, and an audible gap usually appear.
- Stop the test, correct the issue, and repeat it before changing visibility to public.
Keep a local marathon running
A local OBS marathon is under your control, but every part of that chain is your responsibility. Use AC power, disable sleep and automatic shutdown, and prevent operating-system updates from rebooting the machine during the planned run. Keep the media drive connected and place the computer where heat can escape.
During the broadcast, monitor CPU or hardware-encoder load, disk space, temperature, upload bitrate, OBS’s encoder-health status, and the YouTube preview. Arrange restart alerts or have someone who can check the machine if you cannot watch it continuously. A second copy of the playlist and configuration makes recovery faster after a drive or settings failure.

Decide in advance what happens after an interruption. You can restart the same YouTube event if it is still available, or create a new event and key. A live archive may be processed after the stream ends, and YouTube can apply copyright checks to that archive as well as to the live feed.
Copyright and policy risks
Live enforcement can interrupt the feed
Third-party matches can cause YouTube to replace the live picture with a placeholder, and a stream can be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. Enforcement can occur while the marathon is running or when its archive is processed. A private test reduces presentation surprises; it does not grant permission to use uncleared material.
Publisher policies, participant permissions, music licences, and YouTube enforcement are separate questions. Satisfying one does not settle the others. Keep the rights log current and remove audio that you cannot document.

Permission does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s reused-content policy evaluates the channel, not just whether a particular file was legally obtained. Repurposed material without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value can be ineligible for monetization even when you have permission.

YouTube’s July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible under the existing policy; the update said the reused-content policy itself did not change. A silent file repeated for days presents a weak monetization case.
Make the presentation genuinely editorial
- Add original narration, analysis, or a host introduction and closing segment.
- Use chaptered segments and on-screen context that explains the run, challenge, route, or technical choices.
- Moderate live chat and explain the schedule so viewers understand what is prerecorded.
- Change the viewer experience in a substantive way rather than merely adding a logo over an unchanged loop.
These steps can make the channel’s purpose clearer, but they are not a promise of approval. Do not call the broadcast live gameplay when no one is playing during the loop.
Local OBS versus a cloud stream
Both approaches still require rights-cleared footage, compliant audio, a YouTube stream key, and policy accountability. The practical difference is who carries the uptime burden.

Troubleshooting a nonstop GTA stream

Should I make the event public before OBS connects?
No. Start privately or unlisted, confirm the Live Control Room preview and audio, and publish only after the feed and first transition are working.
What happens to the marathon archive?
YouTube may process the live archive after the event. Copyright checks and policy decisions can apply to that archive, so retain the same rights documentation used for the live broadcast.
Does cloud hosting make copyrighted GTA music safe?
