To stream a prerecorded video as a 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop, add it to OBS as a looping Media Source, set the encoder to 3840×2160 at 60 fps with CBR, and use a fixed 2-second keyframe interval—120 frames at 60 fps. Set the bitrate for your codec: YouTube recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 50 Mbps for H.264. Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream URL and private stream key, then test and monitor stream health.
Configure the looping video in OBS

Add a single video
In OBS, add a Media Source and select your prerecorded file. Open the source properties and enable Loop. OBS will replay the file when playback completes, but this setting does not guarantee that the transition from the end of the file to its beginning will be seamless. Watch and listen to the loop point before going live.

Loop a playlist
For multiple clips, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and enable looping. Check the order and transitions by letting the playlist play through; looping repeats the playlist but does not remove gaps, abrupt cuts, or audio discontinuities in the clips.

Set the encoder for 4K at 60 fps
Use an output resolution of 3840×2160 and a frame rate of 60 fps. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with no interval longer than four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds equals 120 frames. The guidance page’s publication date is not stated; the figures below are from YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance accessed October 3, 2026 (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

These are recommended encoder ingestion settings, not a guarantee of the quality viewers will receive. Choose a codec your encoder supports, and ensure your actual upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. The recommendations differ by codec; do not apply one generic 4K/60 bitrate to every setup.
Choose a supported protocol and color settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. For an SDR stream, use Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth as recommended. Do not apply HDR settings to an SDR workflow. YouTube’s guidance describes H.265/HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Set the keyframe interval
In your encoder’s output or streaming settings, select a fixed keyframe interval of 2 seconds (or 120 frames if the encoder asks for frames). Avoid intervals over four seconds. Codec support and the exact control label vary by encoder, so confirm that the setting is fixed and then check YouTube’s received-stream diagnostics: the encoder’s configured value should not be assumed to match the GOP YouTube receives. YouTube’s Live Streaming API can report GOP/keyframe diagnostics; an interval over four seconds is flagged, and an unusually short GOP can reduce image quality.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

Create or select the broadcast
Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a live stream or select the one you intend to use. If you are enabling live streaming on the channel for the first time, YouTube says setup may take up to 24 hours.

Copy the stream URL and key
In the stream settings, copy the supplied stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let the encoder send video to YouTube and allow YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a password: do not share or publish it. A custom key can preserve settings for reuse. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.

Start the stream and check YouTube’s status
Start streaming from OBS and watch Live Control Room for the incoming signal, stream health, and any warnings. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes a live stream into other output formats for viewers. For 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; plan for normal latency rather than expecting 4K low-latency behavior.

Test before the broadcast and monitor it live
Test with movement and audio representative of the planned stream. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Confirm the loop point, listen for audio problems, check that the real upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, and review stream health messages while the broadcast is running.
- Keyframe warnings: Use YouTube’s diagnostics to determine whether the received interval is longer than four seconds or the GOP is unusually short. Recheck the encoder’s fixed interval and the received stream.
- Unstable upload or dropped frames: Verify the upload connection under the conditions in which you will stream. A selected bitrate that the connection cannot sustain can undermine the stream; lower it to a rate the connection can reliably support, using YouTube’s codec-specific guidance as a reference.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and current key, and that the broadcast is selected and ready in Live Control Room. If the key was reset, replace the old value in OBS.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. For several clips, confirm that the VLC Video playlist is configured to loop.
- A visible or audible jump at the loop point: Looping repeats the file or playlist; it does not make its start and end match. Edit or choose source material with a suitable transition, then test the actual loop.
- 4K low latency is unavailable: This is a YouTube limitation for 4K streams; use normal latency expectations.
