Store winter tires clean, completely dry, protected from sunlight, heat, ozone, chemicals and physical pressure. Mark each tire before removal, inspect and wash it, then use the correct position: mounted tires may be stacked or hung, while unmounted tires should stand upright and never be stacked or hung. Sealable plastic bags can reduce dust and exposure, but they do not replace a suitable storage room.
When to take winter tires off
Changeover timing depends on local weather, the tire manufacturer and the vehicle maker. Michelin’s U.S. winter-driving guidance recommends switching from winter tires when temperatures consistently rise above 45°F. That is Michelin’s recommendation, not a universal legal threshold or a rule for every tire, climate or driver. Check the instructions supplied with your tires and vehicle, and consider the temperatures you actually expect during the next several weeks rather than relying on a single warm afternoon.
Removing the set after the winter season gives you a useful inspection opportunity. If a tire has damage, unusual wear or contamination, you can address it before the next cold season instead of discovering the problem during the first storm.

What to do before the tires leave the vehicle
1. Mark each tire’s position
Record where every tire was installed before loosening the lug nuts. A simple note such as front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right is enough. If the tires are directional or the vehicle uses a specified rotation pattern, preserve that information as well.

- New structure - What sets Explore Land's tire bags apart is the innovative patent structure, allows to tire and wheel fully. Package only bag x 4, without felt.
- Cleanliness & Efficiency - While ensuring a clutter-free garage, seasonal tire covers protect your clothes and vehicle's interior from tire and brake residues during the tire swapping process. Reinforced stitching for the handle to make portability a breeze.
- Enhanced Protection - Each set comes with 4 tire covers. Superior waterproof polyester with PU coating offers heightened resistance to water and scratch for our new seasonal tire bags.
- Improved Portability & Fit - Easy to insert and snug-fitting installation by elastic cord without lifting the tires. Adjust the strap by handle sides to snugly adapt to different tire sizes, ensuring optimal protection and a secure grip.
- Universal Compatibility - Refer to our fitting guide picture for size selection, a set of 4 tire bags fits seasonal tire diameters up to: 26''-28.75'', it’s NOT the rim size.
Position markings help the next installation follow the vehicle and tire maker’s rotation instructions. Do not rotate tires merely to make the positions different; some designs must remain on a particular side, and the vehicle manufacturer may specify a particular pattern.
2. Look for damage and uneven wear
Examine the tread, sidewalls and bead area while the tire is still accessible. Look for cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cords, embedded objects and wear that is noticeably heavier on one edge. A stone lodged in a groove should be removed, but a puncture, sidewall injury or structural-looking bulge requires professional assessment rather than a home repair.
Record anything questionable with a photograph or a note. That record makes it easier to compare the tire at the next changeover and to explain a concern to a tire professional.

3. Remove road residue
Winter tires can carry salt, mud, brake dust and grit into storage. Remove stones and other debris from the tread, then wash the tires with water and a suitable mild cleaning method. The objective is to remove road residue, not to apply a solvent, petroleum product or aggressive chemical that could attack the rubber.
4. Dry every surface completely
Allow the tread, sidewalls, bead area and any wheel surfaces to dry before bagging or shelving the set. Trapped moisture can create an unpleasant storage environment and defeats the purpose of using a protective bag. Wipe away remaining water and give the tires enough time in a clean, shaded place to air-dry.
Choose the right storage environment
Michelin states: “Tires should always be stored in a cool, dry, clean, indoor environment.” That principle is the best starting point for a garage, basement, workshop or seasonal storage room.

- Keep the room cool and dry. Avoid locations that become very hot, damp or subject to condensation.
- Block direct sunlight. Store tires away from windows or cover them so ultraviolet exposure is minimized.
- Separate them from heat sources. Do not place tires beside furnaces, radiators, boilers, hot pipes or other equipment that raises the rubber temperature.
- Avoid ozone-producing equipment. Electric motors, generators and similar equipment can expose rubber to ozone; keep the tire set away from them.
- Keep chemicals away. Grease, gasoline, solvents, oils and other chemicals can damage rubber. Do not store tires beside fuel cans, paint thinner, degreasers or oily machinery.
- Protect against sharp objects. Nails, tools, shelving edges and other sharp items can cut or puncture a tire while it is being moved or stored.
- Prevent crushing and loading. Do not put boxes, tools or heavy equipment on top of tires, and do not wedge them where their sidewalls are compressed.
A clean indoor corner is preferable to an outdoor shed or uncovered driveway. If your home cannot provide a dry, protected space, a seasonal tire-storage service may be more appropriate than leaving the set exposed. Ask any provider how the tires are protected, positioned and identified, and whether mounted and unmounted sets are handled differently.
Position tires according to whether they are mounted
The correct orientation depends on whether each tire remains fitted to a wheel. Michelin and Continental give different instructions for mounted and unmounted sets.
| Set condition | Recommended position | Do not do | Reason for the distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tires mounted on wheels | Stack them horizontally or hang them using a suitable wheel-supporting system. | Do not leave the mounted assemblies standing upright for the storage period. | The wheel supports the tire and allows stacking or hanging under the manufacturers’ consumer guidance. |
| Tires removed from wheels | Stand each tire upright on its tread and arrange them so they remain stable. | Do not stack unmounted tires and do not hang them. | Without a wheel, the tire should remain upright rather than being suspended or loaded by a stack. |
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a substitute for the instructions for a particular tire or wheel system. If the tire, vehicle or storage-equipment maker gives more specific directions, follow the most appropriate model-specific guidance.
Mounted tires: stacking and hanging
Mounted assemblies can be stacked horizontally on a clean, stable surface. Keep the stack low enough that it cannot topple, and avoid placing weight on the uppermost wheel or tire. A rack designed to support wheels can also keep mounted tires off the floor. Inspect any hook, bar or rack before use; the support should contact the wheel in a way that does not cut, deform or rub the tire.
Unmounted tires: upright storage
Place unmounted tires upright, with their tread resting on a clean floor or shelf. Leave enough room to lift each tire without dragging it across a sharp edge. Continental specifically cautions against hanging unmounted tires. Do not lay these tires in a horizontal pile, even if the pile appears stable at first.

Sealed plastic bags are optional protection against dust and exposure. Michelin recommends using sealed plastic bags where possible, and Continental describes bagging tires before putting them into a tire tote. Bagging is useful only after the tires are fully dry.

- Easy Storage: Soft, lightweight, and flexible, these black wheel totes fold down quickly after use and fit into the included storage bag. Keep your tire totes organized in the garage, trunk, RV compartment, or trailer storage area without taking up much space.
- Choose a bag large enough that the tire is not forced into a tight bend or compressed shape.
- Slide the dry tire or mounted assembly into the bag without scraping it against a sharp edge.
- Remove excess air if practical, then close the bag securely. The goal is to limit dust and exposure, not to create pressure around the tire.
- Label the outside with the original vehicle position and whether the tire is mounted.
- Place the bagged set in the correct orientation in the storage room.
A tire tote can make a set easier to carry and can cover it, but Continental notes that a tote is not airtight. Treat it as a carrying and dust-cover solution, not as a sealed environmental barrier. A tote also does not correct a damp room, direct sunlight, heat or chemical exposure.
Automotive tire-storage bags are available in sets sized for individual tires or mounted assemblies. Check the bag’s dimensions, closure and material claims rather than assuming that every product is airtight or suitable for long-term outdoor use.
A complete storage procedure
Use this sequence each time you remove the winter set. It separates identification, condition checks, cleaning and placement so that one missed step does not compromise the whole set.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm the changeover conditions. Use the vehicle and tire maker’s guidance. Michelin’s U.S. recommendation is to switch when temperatures consistently rise above 45°F; treat that figure as manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule.
- Photograph or write down each position. Mark front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right, or use the rotation notation specified for your vehicle.
- Remove the wheels carefully. Avoid dragging a tire over concrete, metal shelving or other edges that could damage the sidewall.
- Inspect before washing. Identify cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cords, embedded stones and uneven wear while road residue is still visible.
- Clear the tread. Remove stones and debris from the grooves. Do not force a sharp tool into the rubber.
- Wash away residue. Clean off salt, mud, brake dust and dirt with a suitable mild method. Keep grease, gasoline, solvents and oils away from the rubber.
- Dry completely. Air-dry every tire and wheel assembly in a shaded, clean area. Do not close a damp tire inside a bag or tote.
- Bag the set if desired. Use a sealed plastic bag where practical, label it with the recorded position and close it without crushing the tire.
- Choose the orientation. Stack or hang tires that remain mounted on wheels. Stand unmounted tires upright; never stack or hang them.
- Place the set in its final location. Keep it indoors, cool, dry and clean, away from sunlight, heat, ozone-producing equipment, chemicals and sharp objects. Do not load other items on top.
- Keep the records with the set. Store the position notes and any damage observations where they will be found at the next changeover.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Leaving tires outside under a cover
A cover can block some dirt but does not provide the controlled environment recommended by Michelin and Continental. Move the tires indoors if possible. If that is not possible, use the most protected, dry location available and reassess whether a professional storage service is safer.
Bagging tires while they are damp
Open the bags, remove the tires and dry them fully before closing them again. A bag is optional; complete drying is not.
Hanging an unmounted tire
Remove the suspension and stand the tire upright. Continental cautions against hanging unmounted tires, so do not use a wall hook merely because it saves floor space.

Stacking unmounted tires
Separate the tires and place them upright. Stacking is guidance for mounted assemblies, not for tires removed from their wheels.

Storing beside a motor or generator
Move the set away from electric motors, generators and other ozone-producing equipment. Also check that no heat source or chemical container is nearby.
Putting boxes on top
Clear the top of the stack or rack. Store boxes beside the tires instead of loading them onto the rubber or wheel.
Losing the original positions
Label each tire before it leaves the vehicle. If the markings are gone, do not guess a rotation pattern; consult the vehicle and tire instructions at the next installation.
Preparing the set for the next season
When temperatures begin moving back toward winter conditions, remove the tires from their bags or tote and inspect them again. Confirm that the identification marks are readable, look for new cuts, bulges, cracking or uneven wear, and remove any dust or debris accumulated during storage.
Follow the vehicle and tire maker’s installation and rotation instructions. A tire that was stored correctly can still be unsuitable if it developed damage, shows abnormal wear or no longer meets the manufacturer’s requirements. Have a questionable tire assessed before fitting it to the vehicle rather than waiting until winter driving begins.
After installation, preserve the storage notes for the next changeover. Knowing where each tire was fitted and what you observed during the previous inspection makes seasonal maintenance more consistent and helps reveal changes in wear over time.
