For a RYOBI ONE+ 18V lithium-ion battery that will sit unused for more than 30 days, remove it from the tool, leave it at about 30%–50% charge, and store it below 80°F (27°C) in a dry, sheltered place. Recharge it normally every six months. Keep the terminals away from metal, use only a compatible RYOBI charger, and never use or repair a pack that is damaged. These steps follow the US RYOBI ONE+ 18V battery-pack operator’s manual; confirm your pack’s model and manual before applying the figures to another RYOBI battery family.
The correct long-term storage settings
RYOBI’s US ONE+ 18V Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Operator’s Manual applies its long-term instructions after 30 days of storage. It specifies three key settings:
- Charge: 30%–50% before putting the pack away.
- Temperature: below 80°F (27°C).
- Maintenance interval: charge the pack normally every six months while it remains stored.
The manual also says that completely draining a pack before recharging is unnecessary. The figures above are storage instructions, not a promise of a particular number of extra months or years of service; RYOBI does not publish a quantified lifespan increase for following them.
Check that your battery is covered
The cited US manual lists these ONE+ 18V battery families: PBP002, PBP003, PBP004/PBP004SB30, PBP005/PBP006/PBP007, PBP017, PBP1008/PBP1012, and PBP1104/PBP1108/PBP1112. The model number is printed on the battery label. If yours is not in that list, find the manual for that exact pack before using the 30%–50% and below-80°F figures.

All of these are removable packs. The storage process is for the battery itself, not for leaving a pack installed in a tool, charger, vehicle, or other equipment.
Step-by-step procedure for storage longer than 30 days
- Stop using the tool and inspect the pack. Look for cracks, crushing, swelling, leaking, melted plastic, exposed parts, or other abnormal damage. Set aside any suspect pack; do not charge or use it.
- Remove the battery from the tool. Press the release buttons and slide the pack out. Storing the tool with the battery attached can leave the pack connected to an electrical load and makes accidental contact more likely.
- Set a partial charge. Using a compatible charger, leave the pack at approximately 30%–50%. A fuel gauge may show a broad band rather than an exact laboratory percentage; the manual’s indicated bands include 25%–50% and 50%–75%, so do not chase a perfectly precise number.
- Disconnect the charger. The goal is partial charge for storage, not continuous top-off charging. Once the desired level is reached, remove the pack from the charger.
- Choose a dry, sheltered location below 80°F (27°C). Keep the pack away from moisture and from places exposed to direct sun, rain, humidity, fire, or direct heat. A stable indoor location is the practical way to meet those conditions.
- Prevent terminal contact. Do not place loose batteries where keys, tools, coins, nails, screws, or other metal can bridge the terminals. Keep the contacts protected and separated from conductive objects.
- Record the storage date. Put a reminder on your calendar for six months. At that point, charge the pack normally, then return it to storage if it will remain unused.
How to judge a 30%–50% charge
The manual does not require a precision meter. Use the battery’s built-in fuel gauge as an estimate and aim for the lower-to-middle portion of its displayed range. If the gauge reads in the 25%–50% band, that is close to the stated target. If it shows 50%–75%, use the pack until it falls nearer the target before storage, provided the battery is operating normally.
Do not deliberately run the pack to zero. RYOBI specifically states that draining the battery completely before recharging is not necessary. A normal partial discharge followed by charging to the storage target is sufficient.
Where to store a Ryobi battery
Temperature
For the US ONE+ 18V manual’s long-term-storage instruction, keep the pack below 80°F (27°C). This is a storage threshold, not a general operating-temperature specification. Do not substitute a cold-weather operating statement for the storage rule.
Moisture and weather
Keep the battery away from water, condensation, rain, and damp areas. A garage, shed, or vehicle can become unsuitable if it regularly exceeds the temperature limit or exposes the pack to humidity and weather. Choose the driest, most temperature-stable sheltered location available.
Heat, sunlight, and vehicles
RYOBI Australia’s support guidance adds practical exclusions: avoid direct sunlight, fire, direct heat, extreme temperatures, humidity, and leaving the pack in a vehicle. That regional guidance is consistent with protecting the pack from heat and moisture, but its temperature wording should not be treated as a universal replacement for the US manual.
Australia’s regional temperature guidance
RYOBI Australia advises trying to keep storage and charging locations between 10°C and 37°C, while also specifying storage below 27°C. Because this comes from an Australian support article, identify it as regional guidance. For US readers, the primary long-term storage instruction remains the US manual’s below-80°F (27°C) limit. The 10°C–37°C range should not be presented as a universal charging limit for every country or battery model.

What to do every six months
- Move the pack to a dry area at a suitable temperature.
- Inspect the housing and terminals for new damage, corrosion, dirt, or moisture.
- Place it on a RYOBI ONE+ lithium-ion or dual-chemistry charger.
- Let the charger complete its normal cycle; do not force a charge or use an improvised power supply.
- Remove the pack from the charger and return it to the same partial-charge, dry storage conditions if it will remain unused.
The six-month instruction does not mean the battery must stay continually topped up. It calls for a normal recharge at that interval, followed by storage.
Charging after storage
Use only a RYOBI ONE+ lithium-ion charger or a RYOBI dual-chemistry charger specified for the pack. If a battery has been in a hot or cold location, the charger may not begin charging immediately. The manual explains that packs outside an acceptable temperature range may need to return to a suitable temperature first; follow the instructions for your charger rather than bypassing its protection.
Set a temperature-affected pack aside in a dry location and allow it to reach a normal indoor temperature naturally. Do not heat it with a flame, radiator, hair dryer, or other direct source, and do not cool it in a freezer or with water.
Short gaps versus winter storage
Short gaps of a few days or weeks
For ordinary breaks shorter than 30 days, remove the battery from the tool and keep it dry and away from heat and metal objects. The manual’s specific 30%–50% storage target and six-month schedule are written for storage longer than 30 days; there is no need to repeatedly discharge a pack just because it will sit unused for a short period.

Seasonal storage usually exceeds 30 days, so use the full procedure: partial charge, below-80°F storage, moisture protection, terminal protection, and a six-month calendar reminder. Do not assume an unheated shed or car is acceptable simply because it is out of the rain; winter cold, summer heat, condensation, and direct sunlight can all create unsuitable conditions.
Terminal protection and safe placement
Battery terminals can become hazardous if metal connects them. Store each loose pack so its contacts cannot touch tools, hardware, coins, keys, or another battery’s terminals. Keep packs in a stable position where they cannot be crushed or struck. A special storage case, holder, or analysis device is not identified by RYOBI as necessary; the essential requirements are temperature, dryness, and protection from damaging contact.
Inspection and cleaning before use
Before reinstalling a stored pack, check the housing, release mechanism, label, and contacts. Keep the battery clean and dry. If the terminals need cleaning, wipe them with a dry cloth. Do not use solvents, gasoline, or petroleum-based cleaners, and do not immerse the battery or spray cleaner into its openings.

When a battery must not be used
Do not use, charge, open, modify, crush, or attempt to repair a damaged pack. RYOBI warns that damaged or modified lithium-ion packs can present fire or explosion risks. A pack that is cracked, swollen, leaking, badly dented, unusually hot, or showing melted components should be isolated from combustible materials and handled through qualified service or the appropriate local safety process.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not try to revive a suspect pack by connecting it to another battery, bypassing the charger, or using a third-party charging method. The manual recommends qualified repair rather than consumer repair.
Disposal and recycling
Do not automatically put a lithium-ion battery in ordinary household trash. RYOBI’s manual says local, state, or federal rules may restrict disposal and directs owners to their local waste authority for recycling or disposal options. Keep a retired pack protected from metal contact and damage while arranging its handoff.
Common storage mistakes and fixes
| Situation | Why it is a problem | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Battery left attached to the tool | The pack remains connected and is more exposed to accidental activation or contact. | Remove the pack before storing the tool. |
| Battery stored fully charged for a long period | It does not follow the manual’s long-term 30%–50% target. | Use the fuel gauge to bring it near the partial-charge range before storage. |
| Battery run completely flat first | Deep discharge is unnecessary before recharging. | Recharge normally and set the storage charge without intentionally reaching zero. |
| Pack kept in a hot car or direct sun | Vehicle interiors and sunlight can exceed the storage temperature guidance. | Move it to a dry, sheltered location below 80°F (27°C). |
| Pack stored beside loose hardware | Metal can bridge the terminals. | Separate the contacts from coins, keys, tools, and fasteners. |
| Charger refuses to start | The pack may be outside the charger’s acceptable temperature range. | Allow it to return naturally to a suitable temperature and follow the charger manual. |
| Cracked, swollen, leaking, or modified pack | Damage can create fire or explosion risk. | Do not use or repair it; seek qualified service and follow local disposal guidance. |
Does this guarantee a longer battery life?
No specific lifespan extension or percentage improvement has been established for these steps. They are RYOBI’s stated storage precautions for the covered ONE+ 18V packs. Following them reduces avoidable exposure to heat, moisture, damaging discharge practices, and terminal shorts, but the eventual service life also depends on the individual pack’s condition and use history.
When replacement makes sense
Storage does not require buying a new accessory. Replace a pack only when the existing one is damaged, cannot be safely charged, or has reached the end of its useful life. RYOBI identifies its 18V ONE+ packs as compatible across 18V ONE+ products, but verify the exact replacement model and compatibility before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the model number tells you
Battery capacity markings such as 4Ah identify the pack’s energy rating, but they do not replace the model-specific manual. A higher-capacity ONE+ pack still needs the same basic handling only when its own instructions say so. Read the complete label, including the PBP model code and any suffix, before assuming that another pack follows the listed 30-day, 30%–50%, and below-80°F rules.
Do not mix charging instructions from different RYOBI families. The ONE+ system is designed around compatible 18V products, yet a charger’s chemistry setting and temperature protections still matter. If a dual-chemistry charger is used, select the setting specified for the battery and charger combination rather than guessing.

Choosing a storage spot in a real home
A closet, interior utility room, or other dry indoor shelf is generally easier to keep under the stated temperature limit than an attic, greenhouse, unconditioned shed, or parked vehicle. The ideal spot is not necessarily the warmest or coldest room; it is the place with the least daily temperature swing and no routine condensation. Keep the pack where children, pets, and loose hardware cannot reach the terminals.
If the only available area is a garage, check its conditions during the hottest and coldest parts of the season. A garage that stays dry but rises above 80°F for long periods does not meet the US long-term storage instruction. Move the pack indoors for seasonal storage rather than relying on a closed toolbox or vehicle trunk to control temperature.

Planning seasonal storage
Before putting a pack away for winter, write the storage date and model number on a note or calendar entry. Schedule the six-month recharge for a date when you can inspect the pack and charger in person. If you own several packs, check them one at a time and keep each one separate from metal objects. A simple inventory prevents one battery from being forgotten for years.
At the six-month check, the pack does not need to be fully discharged before charging. Inspect it first, let it reach a suitable temperature naturally, charge it with the approved charger, and then disconnect it. If the pack will be used soon, a normal full charge for operation is appropriate; if it is going back into long-term storage, return it to the manufacturer’s partial-charge target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why continuous top-off charging is not the storage plan
The manual calls for a 30%–50% charged condition and a normal charge every six months. That is different from leaving a pack on a charger indefinitely. Once the scheduled charge is complete, remove the pack and store it under the same dry, cool conditions. Continuous connection also makes it harder to notice a damaged pack or an unsuitable charger setup.
