Remove a Kobalt battery from its yard tool when the tool’s manual says to do so. Keep the battery and charger indoors in a dry location that stays within the temperature limits for that exact battery platform. The tool can sometimes remain in an unheated garage, but that is not automatically suitable for the battery or charger.

Kobalt uses several battery platforms and product generations. Their manuals and product answers do not give one universal winter charge percentage or one temperature range. Identify the model number first, then follow its manual for charging, storage, folding, hanging, and upright-storage instructions.

Start with the exact Kobalt model

Before unplugging anything, record the model number printed on the tool, battery and charger. Voltage alone is not enough: a 24-volt, 40-volt or 80-volt pack may have different temperature and charging requirements, and batteries from different generations should not be assumed interchangeable. Match the battery to the approved list in the tool’s manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A historical Lowe’s release described an interchangeable 40-volt outdoor-power-equipment line in 2014. That does not establish compatibility between 24-, 40- and 80-volt systems, or between every generation within one voltage. If the manual is missing, use the model number to obtain the current manual or contact Kobalt support rather than applying a percentage or temperature from another product.

Where the battery, charger and tool should spend winter

Battery and charger: choose a controlled indoor space

For removable packs, the safest general arrangement supported by the cited Kobalt guidance is a clean, dry indoor location protected from freezing conditions, excessive heat, moisture and direct sun. A Kobalt Team answer for the 80-volt KB 880-06 says to keep the battery and charger indoors in a temperature-controlled area—warm in winter and cool in summer.

“Temperature-controlled” does not mean you must buy a special heater or storage cabinet. It means the space remains within the limits printed for your model and avoids the large temperature swings common in sheds, vehicles and unheated garages. An insulated area above 41°F and below 104°F was specified in a December 1, 2025 Kobalt Team answer for a named Gen4 blower, but that range belongs to that blower context.

That answer is specific to the named 80-volt context. It should not be treated as a universal Kobalt rule, because other manuals publish their own limits. The practical implication is still important: an unheated garage is not automatically equivalent to a temperature-controlled room for a battery or charger.

Tool: indoor garage storage may be acceptable

The same 80-volt answer distinguishes the machine from its battery. It says the machine should also be stored indoors, such as in a garage, but does not have to be in a temperature-controlled area. This distinction applies to that answer’s 80-volt context; check your own tool manual before leaving a mower, blower or trimmer in an unheated space.

Whatever the location, keep the tool dry and away from fertilizer, rock salt, fuel, solvents and other corrosive materials. Do not block ventilation openings or place the tool where falling objects can damage the battery compartment, controls or blade. Keep battery terminals from touching loose screws, nails or other metal objects, and do not leave a pack in direct sunlight.

If the garage is your only option

Do not guess that outdoor winter temperatures are acceptable. Compare the lowest and highest expected garage temperatures with the manual’s battery-storage and charging limits. If you cannot verify that the garage stays in range, move the battery and charger to a room with a steadier temperature and leave only the tool in the garage if its manual permits that arrangement.

A cold pack should not be connected to a charger simply because the calendar says it is time for a check. Let it reach the permitted charging range naturally in a dry indoor area. Do not use a radiator, heat gun, space heater or other improvised heat source to warm it.

Temperature limits are model-specific

Use the following figures only when they match your exact model and manual. They illustrate why a single “Kobalt winter temperature” number would be misleading.

Product context Published temperature guidance Important qualification
24-volt trimmer manual Tool storage: −4°F to 158°F; tool operation: −4°F to 104°F; battery charging: 39°F to 104°F; charger operation: 39°F to 113°F; battery discharging: 6.8°F to 113°F. These values apply to the models covered by that manual, not to every Kobalt product.
24-volt trimmer battery storage 32°F to 73°F for one year; 32°F to 113°F for three months; 32°F to 140°F for one month. Duration changes the permitted range. The longest storage period has the narrowest range.
40-volt mower manual Charge above 45°F and below 104°F. The manual also warns not to store the battery outside or in a vehicle.
80-volt KB 880-06 answer Battery and charger indoors in a temperature-controlled area; machine indoors, including an unheated garage. This is a Kobalt Team answer for that named 80-volt battery and machine context.
Named Gen4 blower answer, December 1, 2025 Keep the battery and charger in an insulated area above 41°F and below 104°F. The answer says not to store the battery outside or in vehicles and is tied to that blower context.

Never charge a pack outside its manual’s charging range. If a battery has been sitting in a freezing garage, let it reach the permitted charging temperature before connecting the charger; do not try to warm it with a heater, radiator or other improvised heat source. Storage and charging limits are separate: a manual may allow a wider storage range than charging range, so do not substitute one table for the other.

Charge level: why there is no universal winter percentage

The available Kobalt guidance conflicts, so it should not be blended into a made-up compromise. A Lowe’s 80-volt mower Q&A reproduces a manual excerpt saying that storage longer than 30 days should use a 30%–50% charge, below 80°F, away from moisture, with a recharge every two months. On that same page, a Kobalt Team answer recommends a full charge for winter, disconnecting the battery from the charger except when replenishing it, and checking it every couple of months.

A separate Lowe’s answer attributed to the Kobalt Team recommends storing a 40-volt battery fully charged and recharging it after every use. Those recommendations may reflect different products, revisions or answer contexts. They are not evidence of one portfolio-wide setting.

For your tool:

  • Follow the current manual for the exact battery and tool model.
  • If the manual specifies a percentage, use that percentage and its stated temperature and inspection interval.
  • If the manual is unavailable or unclear, ask Kobalt support with the model and battery numbers.
  • Do not leave a fully charged battery connected to the charger for an extended storage period unless the exact instructions explicitly require it.

Do not infer that “full” is always safer than “30%–50%,” or that a partially charged pack is always safer. The conflicting published instructions make the model number decisive. Write the selected charge level and the date on your winter checklist so another household member does not apply a different rule later.

Prepare the yard tool before putting it away

Clean and dry the machine

Remove grass, leaves, mud and other debris. Pay attention to the battery bay, vents, guards, wheels and underside of a mower. Allow all surfaces to dry completely before storage. Moisture trapped around contacts or metal parts can contribute to corrosion.

Inspect cutting equipment and hardware

For a mower, inspect the blade and its fasteners for damage, looseness or excessive wear. Follow the manual for blade removal, sharpening or replacement; do not reach into the blade area with the battery installed. Check handles, guards, wheels, switches and cables for cracks or missing hardware. Make repairs with approved parts before spring rather than putting a questionable machine away.

Use a breathable cover strategy

The cited Kobalt mower manual warns: “Plastic coverings trap moisture around the mower, which causes rust and corrosion.” Do not wrap that mower in a solid plastic sheet. If a cover is needed, use the approach approved in the manual and make sure the tool is already clean and dry. A cover must not seal dampness against metal surfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep corrosive materials and children away

Store the cleaned tool in a dry indoor area away from fertilizer, rock salt and similar corrosive products. Keep it inaccessible to children. Do not place heavy objects on the tool or route cords where they can be cut, pinched or tripped over.

Folding, hanging and upright storage

Space-saving positions are not interchangeable across Kobalt tools. Lowe’s identifies the KPM 1040A-03 mower as a model that can be stored upright and directs owners to its manual for the procedure. That is a model-specific exception, not permission to stand every Kobalt mower on its end.

Use only the position shown for your model. If the manual permits folding, remove the battery first, secure the handle or locking mechanism and confirm that controls, wiring and the blade are not under strain. If it permits hanging, use only the specified attachment points and weight limits. Never improvise a wall hook that could pull on the battery housing or allow the machine to fall.

Step-by-step winter storage procedure

  1. Identify the equipment. Photograph or write down the tool, battery and charger model numbers, voltage and the manual revision if shown.
  2. Read the storage section. Note the required charge level, maximum storage duration, temperature range, inspection interval and any permitted folding or upright position.
  3. Stop and cool the tool. Turn it off, remove the key or safety device if the manual specifies one, and wait for hot components to cool.
  4. Remove the battery. Take the pack out when the manual directs. Do not store a removable battery inside the tool merely for convenience.
  5. Inspect the pack. Do not store a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, wet or otherwise damaged. Keep terminals from contacting metal objects. A damaged pack requires Kobalt’s safety and service guidance, not a winter-storage workaround.
  6. Set the charge correctly. Use the exact manual’s percentage or charging instruction. For a 40-volt mower, charging must occur above 45°F and below 104°F; other models have different limits.
  7. Disconnect the charger. Once the specified charge is reached, remove the battery from the charger for storage unless the model’s instructions explicitly say otherwise.
  8. Clean the tool. Remove debris, wipe surfaces and dry the battery compartment, vents and metal parts.
  9. Inspect the machine. Check the blade, guards, wheels, handles, switches and fasteners. Arrange service or an approved replacement part before spring if something is damaged.
  10. Choose separate locations. Put the battery and charger in the manual-approved indoor temperature range. Put the dry tool in the approved indoor location, which may be an unheated garage for some models.
  11. Protect against corrosion and accidents. Keep the tool away from fertilizer and salt, avoid a solid plastic sheet over the cited mower, and keep equipment away from children.
  12. Set a reminder. If the manual requires a two-month check or recharge, record the date and inspect the pack without exceeding its charging-temperature limits.

Garage versus house: a practical decision rule

Use a temperature-controlled indoor room for the battery and charger when the manual calls for it, when the garage can fall below the charging or storage range, or when you cannot verify the garage temperature. A garage may be suitable for the tool itself only when the tool manual allows indoor unheated storage and the space remains dry.

Do not store a battery outside or in a vehicle when the manual or Kobalt Team answer prohibits it. Vehicles can experience rapid temperature swings and prolonged heat or cold, even when the outdoor weather seems moderate. A covered patio or garden shed is not automatically safer than a garage because it remains exposed to moisture and temperature changes.

Off-season checks and spring startup

Use the inspection interval in the manual. The cited 80-volt mower material calls for checking every couple of months, while the 30%-to-50% manual excerpt calls for recharging every two months. A check means looking for swelling, cracks, moisture, corrosion or other damage and confirming that the storage area is still within the permitted range. Do not top up a pack merely because it has been inspected unless the manual tells you to recharge it.

Inspect before charging

Look for swelling, cracks, corrosion, moisture or a damaged connector. If anything appears abnormal, do not insert the pack into a tool or charger. Follow Kobalt’s service instructions for that model.

Bring the pack into the charging range

Let a cold battery reach the temperature permitted by its manual in a dry indoor area. Then charge it only within the stated range. The 24-volt trimmer manual, for example, specifies 39°F to 104°F for charging; the 40-volt mower manual specifies more than 45°F and less than 104°F.

Test the tool safely

Reinstall the approved battery, confirm that guards and controls are fitted, and test the tool in an open area. Stop if the tool behaves erratically, overheats, emits an odor or shows a fault indicator. Do not substitute a different voltage or unlisted battery to make a tool run.

Replacement batteries and compatibility

Winter storage does not require a replacement battery. If a pack has failed or is damaged, buy only a replacement listed for the exact tool model and battery platform. Check the manual’s approved battery list, voltage and model designation before ordering. A physically similar pack is not proof of electrical or mechanical compatibility. If a listing says only “compatible with Kobalt” without identifying the required platform and model, verify it before purchase.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one temperature rule for every Kobalt product: the published 24-, 40- and 80-volt guidance differs, and even storage duration changes the 24-volt limits.
  • Leaving the battery in the tool: remove it when the manual directs, especially before cleaning, folding or long-term storage.
  • Charging in a freezing garage: move the battery into its permitted charging range first.
  • Leaving a full pack on the charger all winter: disconnect it unless the exact manual says otherwise.
  • Wrapping a mower in solid plastic: the cited manual says trapped moisture can cause rust and corrosion.
  • Standing every mower upright: only the identified KPM 1040A-03 guidance supports that position; other models may not.
  • Assuming voltage proves compatibility: match the model and approved battery list, not just the number printed on the pack.
  • Storing near chemicals: fertilizer and rock salt can corrode equipment even in a dry garage.

When the manual and an online answer disagree

Give priority to the current manual for your exact model, then verify unresolved questions with Kobalt support. Product Q&A answers can be tied to a particular battery, mower or blower and may not apply to another generation. The 80-volt winter-charge conflict demonstrates why a generic “always full” or “always 50%” instruction is unsafe to generalize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I store a Kobalt battery indoors when winter temperatures fall below freezing?

Usually, yes when the manual calls for an indoor or temperature-controlled location. Keep the battery and charger within the exact model’s storage range; do not assume an unheated garage is suitable just because the tool itself may be stored there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an unheated garage safe for a Kobalt mower or other yard tool?

It can be for the tool on some models, including the machine in the 80-volt KB 880-06 answer, provided the space is indoors and dry. The battery and charger may still need a temperature-controlled room. Check your own manual.

What charge percentage should a Kobalt battery have for winter storage?

There is no universal percentage. One 80-volt manual excerpt specifies 30%–50% for storage longer than 30 days, while Kobalt Team answers for other contexts recommend a full charge. Follow the current manual for your exact model or contact Kobalt support.

Can I leave the battery attached to the charger for the winter?

Do not do so as a general practice. Disconnect a fully charged pack from the charger unless the exact model instructions explicitly require a different arrangement.

How often should I check a stored Kobalt battery?

Use the interval in the manual. The cited instructions include checking or recharging about every two months, but another model may specify something different. Inspect for damage and stay within the charging-temperature range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I cover my Kobalt mower with a plastic sheet?

The cited mower manual warns that plastic coverings trap moisture and cause rust and corrosion. Store the clean, dry mower using the cover method approved in its manual instead of sealing it in solid plastic.

Can every Kobalt mower be stored upright to save space?

No. Lowe’s specifically identifies the KPM 1040A-03 as upright-storage capable and directs owners to its manual. Do not stand another mower on end unless its own instructions permit it.

Are Kobalt 24-volt, 40-volt and 80-volt batteries interchangeable?

Do not assume they are. Match the exact model and approved battery list in the tool manual. Voltage and physical fit alone do not establish compatibility.

What should I do if my battery is swollen, cracked or wet after storage?

Do not charge it or install it in a tool. Isolate it from metal objects and follow Kobalt’s safety and service guidance for that battery model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact Kobalt tool and battery model, remove the pack when directed, and store the battery and charger indoors within their published temperature limits. Clean and dry the tool, keep it away from corrosive materials, and use only the folding or upright position its manual permits. Because Kobalt’s charge and temperature instructions vary, follow the current model manual or Kobalt support instead of applying a universal winter percentage.
