If a ticket cannot be added to Google Wallet, use the issuer’s own app or website first, then keep the confirmation email and any downloadable PDF. A locally saved PDF or screenshot is a useful offline fallback only when the airline, venue, or ticket provider accepts that format. Open the saved ticket before leaving, confirm that the barcode is fully legible, and keep photo identification available for air travel.
Wallet support is controlled by the issuer, not guaranteed for every ticket. Google Wallet lists support for participating airlines, venues, and ticket providers, so a missing Add to Google Wallet control usually means the issuer has not enabled that pass type.
Why a ticket may not appear in Google Wallet
Google Wallet is not a universal storage destination for every event or journey. Its support page describes tickets from participating airlines, venues, and ticket providers; participation and the ticket type determine whether an add button appears. The issuer also controls the barcode, its refresh behavior, and the formats that scanners accept. A venue can provide a PDF but no wallet pass, while an airline may offer Apple Wallet but not Google Wallet. A ticket that works in one company’s app therefore does not establish a rule for another company.

Do not install a separate wallet app merely to force an unsupported pass into a wallet. Preserve the original issuer record and ask the issuer which alternatives are valid for that exact reservation or event.
The safest storage workflow
- Open the official app or website while connected. Sign in to the airline, venue, or ticket provider and display the current ticket or boarding pass. Check the passenger or attendee name, date, time, seat, event, flight, and barcode before saving anything. If more than one leg or ticket is involved, open each one rather than saving only the first screen.
- Keep the original confirmation email. Do not delete the message that contains the booking reference, ticket link, or instructions. Star it, move it to a travel folder, or otherwise make it easy to find without searching through a full inbox. The email can help an agent locate the booking if a saved image or file cannot be scanned.
- Download the supplied PDF. If the issuer offers a PDF ticket or boarding pass, save the original file in the phone’s local file storage. Give it a recognizable name and confirm that it opens after downloading. An offline copy is easier to retrieve when mobile service is weak, but it may not update if the issuer later changes the reservation.
- Use a screenshot only when permitted. Capture the entire code and the required ticket details, not a cropped fragment. Screenshots are appropriate only if the issuer says they are accepted. Never assume a still image will work for a barcode that refreshes, rotates, or is invalidated after a change. Keep the screenshot as a backup, not as proof that the issuer has approved that format.
- Use an issuer-provided Apple Wallet option when available. If the airline or venue supplies an Add to Apple Wallet control, follow that flow rather than trying to convert the pass yourself. Apple says to contact the airline when the control is absent; the issuer decides whether its boarding passes are supported.
- Test the fallback offline. Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, then open the saved PDF, image, or issuer app screen. This verifies that you can reach the intended copy without connectivity; it does not guarantee that the issuer or scanner will accept it. Restore connectivity afterward so the official app can receive any later updates.
- Ask before travel or arrival. Contact the airline, venue, or ticket provider and ask specifically whether a downloaded PDF, screenshot, or printout is valid for that ticket. Keep the answer and any instructions with the reservation. Ask whether the code is static or refreshed, and what to do if the ticket changes.
What to verify before saving
Read the complete ticket, not just the barcode. Confirm the name, date, time, location, flight or event number, seat, and any ticket or booking reference shown by the issuer. A legible code with missing identifying details may still be difficult for staff to validate. If the issuer displays several pages, save every page that contains required entry information.
Use the original file supplied by the issuer. Do not edit a PDF, redraw a barcode, or convert it into a different image format in an attempt to make it fit a wallet. Such a conversion does not create issuer approval and can remove information that staff need.

When several formats are offered, compare them by acceptance, offline availability, and whether the code can change. The live issuer app is usually the best place to see updates, while a local file is often the quickest fallback when the network is unavailable. A wallet pass is convenient only after the issuer has created and authorized it.

Choose the format the issuer identifies as valid, then keep one additional copy for access problems. For example, an issuer-approved app plus its original PDF gives you a current source and an offline file. That combination still requires checking the current app after a schedule, seat, gate, or event change.
How to ask the issuer the right question
Support agents can answer more accurately when you identify the exact reservation. Provide the booking or ticket reference and ask: “For this ticket, may I present a downloaded PDF, a screenshot, or a printout, and is the barcode static or refreshed?” Ask where the current version will appear after a change and whether every traveler or attendee needs a separate code.
If there is no Add to Google Wallet button, ask whether the issuer supports Google Wallet for that particular ticket type rather than assuming the account is malfunctioning. If Apple Wallet is offered, ask whether its pass is the required presentation method or simply an optional convenience. Keep the issuer’s written instructions or email with your confirmation.

Google’s screenshot-to-Wallet option on Pixel phones
Google documents a limited method for adding a boarding-pass screenshot to Wallet on Pixel phones version 3 and later. The prerequisites are a Pixel 3 or newer device, Wallet installed, and an internet connection while the pass is being added. Once saved, the pass can be accessed offline. The procedure is described in Google Wallet Help.
This feature is a boarding-pass workflow, not a universal way to import every event ticket. It also does not override the issuer’s barcode rules. If the airline does not recognize the screenshot, uses a changing code, or requires its own app, retain and use the issuer’s approved format instead. A successful import into Wallet confirms only that the phone can store the image; it does not establish that the airline or airport will accept it.
Practical way to use the Pixel workflow
- Open the airline’s boarding pass while online and make sure the full barcode and identifying details are visible.
- Capture the screenshot without covering or cropping the code. Avoid notification banners or overlays that hide ticket information.
- Follow the Wallet instructions for adding a boarding-pass screenshot while the phone is connected to the internet. Wallet must be installed, and the phone must meet the Pixel-version requirement.
- After the pass appears in Wallet, disable connectivity and open it again to confirm that it is reachable.
- Keep the original airline email or PDF as a second copy, because the screenshot method does not make an unsupported ticket universally acceptable.
If a flight is rebooked or the seat changes, return to the airline’s live boarding pass and make a new approved copy. Do not assume the earlier Wallet image changes automatically.
Using Apple Wallet when Google Wallet is unsupported
Apple Wallet can display passes using QR, Aztec, and PDF417 two-dimensional barcodes. Apple’s developer documentation explains those barcode capabilities in its Wallet Human Interface Guidelines and Getting Started with Apple Wallet. Barcode compatibility alone is not a promise that a particular issuer has created a pass or that every scanner accepts every saved image.

If an airline’s boarding-pass page includes Add to Apple Wallet, use that control. If it is missing, Apple’s support instruction is to contact the airline and confirm that boarding passes in Wallet are supported: Apple Support: Use your boarding pass in Apple Wallet.
Issuer policies can differ sharply. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ, for example, describes Apple Wallet support while stating that Google Wallet is unavailable for its boarding-pass use case: Royal Caribbean’s boarding-pass FAQ. Treat that as an issuer-specific example, not a general rule for cruises, airlines, or venues.
Air-travel requirements beyond the wallet
Google’s developer guidance for importing boarding passes from flight-reservation emails says travelers should carry a printed or digital copy and have photo identification available at security and the boarding gate. Read the carrier and airport instructions for your itinerary before relying on that guidance; it is not a universal requirement for every airline or event. - Make sure the passenger name on the pass matches the required identification.
- Keep the booking reference and original confirmation email available if an agent needs to look up the reservation.
- Save the pass before arriving at the airport, where a weak connection can make a live page difficult to load.
- Use the issuer’s latest version after a seat, flight, gate, or schedule change; an older PDF or screenshot may no longer represent the reservation.
- Keep the digital and printed copies together with the identification you will present. A backup does not replace the carrier’s identification rules.
What to do when there is no “Add to Google Wallet” button
The issuer offers only an app or web page
Use that official presentation method and save the confirmation email. Ask whether the app can display the pass without a connection. If it cannot, download any supplied PDF and request a printout option or other approved fallback. Test the app while signed in before departure; an app that requires a fresh login may be difficult to use when service is unavailable.

A PDF is available but the scanner rejects it
Check that the file is the original, that the complete barcode is visible at a readable size, and that the ticket has not changed. Then ask the issuer whether its scanners accept digital PDFs or require a paper copy. Do not edit the file or convert it to a different barcode image. If the issuer says a printout is required, print the current version rather than presenting an old file.
A screenshot will not scan
Increase the on-screen brightness, display the complete code, and avoid zoom levels that blur the edges. If it still fails, stop relying on the screenshot and present the issuer app, original PDF, or an approved printout. A screenshot cannot repair an expired or rotating code. Ask staff whether they need the code displayed in the issuer app instead of an image.
The ticket changed after it was saved
Reconnect to the issuer, open the current pass, and replace the local PDF or image. Keep the old file only as a record, not as the version you present at entry. Recheck every saved copy if the booking is split across several passengers, flights, or event sessions.
The phone is offline
Open the locally stored file or previously added wallet pass. If it cannot be reached, use a printed copy if the issuer accepts one, or contact staff with the booking reference and identification. Offline testing before departure is the best way to discover an inaccessible file.
The code is visible but details are missing
Return to the original issuer page or PDF. A cropped image may omit the passenger name, seat, ticket number, or instructions staff need. Save a complete page and keep the confirmation email instead of relying on a barcode fragment.
A pre-departure checklist
- Official app or website opened and the ticket verified.
- Passenger or attendee name, date, time, location, seat, and booking reference checked.
- Confirmation email retained with booking reference.
- Original PDF downloaded to local storage, when supplied.
- Every page or separate boarding pass saved when the reservation has multiple segments.
- Screenshot saved only after the issuer confirms that screenshots are accepted.
- Apple Wallet pass added through the issuer, when offered.
- Saved copy opened with connectivity disabled.
- Barcode fully visible, sharp, and not cropped.
- Photo identification packed for air travel.
- Issuer contacted about any missing wallet button or uncertainty over PDFs, screenshots, or printouts.
