After buying Bitcoin, you have two broad storage choices: leave it with the exchange that sold it to you, or move it to a wallet whose private keys you control. Exchange custody is simpler and keeps trading convenient, but withdrawals depend on the provider’s security, solvency and policies. Self-custody removes that custodial dependency, while making you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information. Many people combine the two: a small internet-connected wallet for spending and offline storage for longer-term savings.
What “storing Bitcoin” actually means
Bitcoin is represented on a public blockchain rather than sitting inside a physical wallet. A wallet is an application or device that manages private keys. Those keys authorize transactions spending the Bitcoin associated with their addresses. The central custody question is therefore: who controls the private keys?
With exchange custody, the exchange controls or holds the keys on your behalf. Your account balance reflects the provider’s records and its ability to process withdrawals. With self-custody, your wallet controls the keys directly. The blockchain does not know whether you use an exchange account, a phone wallet or a dedicated device; it records valid transactions signed by the controlling keys.

#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Exchange custody: how it works and what you accept
The operating model
When Bitcoin remains on an exchange, you sign in to an account rather than signing transactions with a key stored by your own wallet. The provider handles key management, transaction construction and withdrawal processing. You can usually continue buying, selling or trading without moving coins between services, although exact procedures differ by provider and location.
Access is consequently a chain of dependencies: your login, the provider’s identity checks, its internal security controls, its solvency and its withdrawal rules all matter. Account recovery is also governed by the provider’s current policies, which can change and vary by jurisdiction.
Why people choose exchange custody
- Convenience: Buying and selling can happen in the same interface, without first learning wallet addresses, network fees or recovery procedures.
- Managed key handling: The provider performs the operational work of safeguarding keys and signing withdrawals.
- Familiar account recovery: If you lose a password or phone, recovery follows the service’s identity-verification process rather than a wallet seed-phrase process.
- Fast access for active trading: Funds can remain immediately available for orders supported by that service.
The risks you are delegating
Custody does not make Bitcoin risk-free. A service can be hacked, become insolvent, freeze an account, delay withdrawals or change its policies. A problem with your email, password, authentication device or identity documentation can also block access. You must rely on the exchange to maintain accurate records and honor withdrawals when requested.

These risks are different from market-price volatility. Keeping coins on an exchange does not protect their value from price changes, and an account balance is not the same as direct control of the underlying private keys. Provider terms, legal protections and any insurance arrangements vary by country and service; check the named provider’s current terms before relying on them.
Safer practices for an exchange account
- Choose a provider carefully, considering its reputation, operating jurisdiction, withdrawal history and published security practices.
- Use a unique, long password and enable strong multifactor authentication wherever the service offers it. An authenticator app or hardware security key is generally preferable to relying only on text messages, but follow the provider’s supported options.
- Secure the email account associated with the exchange because an attacker who controls that inbox may be able to reset access.
- Review withdrawal-address controls, login alerts, device sessions and anti-phishing settings if the provider supplies them.
- Keep only the amount that needs to remain available for trading or near-term use. Move longer-term savings to a storage method you understand and can maintain.
No exchange security setting can turn custodial holdings into self-custody. The provider still controls the keys and the withdrawal decision.

Self-custody: direct control with direct responsibility
What changes when you control the keys
A self-custody wallet generates and controls its own private keys. You authorize outgoing transactions from the wallet, and no exchange must approve a withdrawal. This removes dependence on a custodian’s solvency and account policies, but it transfers every operational responsibility to you.
Self-custody can be provided by desktop or mobile software, a browser-based wallet, a dedicated hardware device, or more advanced multisignature arrangements. The wallet type changes the security and recovery workflow; it does not change the fundamental rule that whoever can use the keys can spend the Bitcoin.
Set up a self-custody wallet methodically
- Select a wallet whose documentation you can understand. Confirm which Bitcoin networks and address formats it supports, how it creates backups, and how restoration works before depositing funds.
- Obtain the software or device from an authentic source. Download wallet software from the developer’s official channel and verify that you are not installing a look-alike application. For a hardware wallet, use the manufacturer or an authorized reseller rather than an unknown marketplace listing.
- Create the wallet yourself. During first setup, the wallet should generate the recovery information in front of you. Never accept a wallet that arrives with a seed phrase already printed or supplied by someone else.
- Write down the complete recovery information exactly as instructed. A missing word, wrong order or omitted passphrase can make restoration fail. Do not photograph it or upload it to an unencrypted cloud folder.
- Test the recovery process before depositing a large amount. Follow the wallet’s documented restore procedure on the appropriate device or installation, and confirm that the expected addresses return. Wallets differ, so do not assume that every backup behaves identically.
- Send a small test transaction first. Copy the receiving address through the wallet’s normal function, verify it on the destination screen and check the transaction status before sending more.
- Keep the wallet and its operating system current. Apply authentic updates and monitor the developer’s security notices.
Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance explains that backups can help after device failure, theft or human error, but the backup itself must be protected as carefully as the device.
Hot wallets, cold storage and a practical combination
Hot wallets
A hot wallet is connected to the internet. It is convenient for everyday payments because the device can create and broadcast transactions quickly. Internet access also increases exposure to malware, malicious apps, phishing and device theft. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ defines a hot wallet as an internet-connected wallet and recommends limiting the amount kept on a computer or phone for daily use.
Cold wallets
Cold storage keeps the keys offline when they are not being used. It is suited to savings that do not need frequent spending, because an attacker who compromises an online device has less opportunity to reach offline keys. Cold storage still requires careful transaction review and a reliable recovery plan; offline does not mean mistake-proof.

A blended pattern
A common arrangement is a hot wallet containing a small spending balance and cold storage holding savings. This is a practical pattern, not a universal percentage or threshold. Set the spending amount according to how much loss you could tolerate and how often you transact. Keep the remainder in the storage environment whose backup and recovery process you can execute confidently.

You can use more than one wallet, but each additional wallet creates another set of addresses, backups, software and procedures to track. Maintain a written inventory of which wallet controls which funds without recording secret phrases in that inventory.
Hardware wallets: useful, optional and not foolproof
A Bitcoin hardware wallet is a dedicated physical device designed to keep private keys offline while displaying transaction details for approval. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a balance between security and ease of use and lists multiple products in its hardware-wallet chooser. The list is not an independent ranking, and models and availability can change.
A hardware wallet does not eliminate the need for backups, recovery testing or careful transaction checks. The device can be lost, damaged, misconfigured or tricked by a malicious computer screen. If a proper backup exists, a lost device may be recoverable on a compatible replacement, but recovery depends on the wallet’s documented backup format and any additional passphrase settings you enabled.
How to buy and initialize one safely
- Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller.
- Inspect packaging and device integrity according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Update firmware only through the authentic companion software.
- Generate the recovery phrase yourself during first use; never use a phrase supplied in the box or by a seller.
- Confirm that the device shows the destination address and amount before you approve a transaction.
Bitcoin.org’s scam warnings describe counterfeit hardware wallets sold through third-party marketplaces. A device with a seed phrase already known to an attacker or modified firmware can give an attacker control from the first deposit.

Backups and recovery determine whether self-custody is survivable
What a backup protects against
A correctly made backup can restore access after a phone, computer or hardware wallet is lost, stolen or destroyed. Many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from a recovery phrase, but wallet implementations differ. Read the specific wallet’s instructions and confirm whether it also uses a passphrase, a derivation setting, a keystore file or another recovery component.
How to protect recovery information
- Keep the phrase private. A legitimate support employee, developer or business will not need it.
- Store copies in more than one secure physical location so one fire, flood or theft is not a single point of failure.
- Do not leave an unencrypted digital copy in email, cloud storage, a notes app or a camera-roll photo.
- Limit who can access the locations and avoid labeling a container in a way that advertises its purpose.
- Periodically check that the written words remain readable, without exposing them to a camera or networked device.
There is no central reset button for a self-custodied wallet. Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” That is why a backup plan is part of choosing self-custody, not an optional task after setup.
Sending Bitcoin safely
Bitcoin transactions are not reversible by a central authority. If you send coins to the wrong address, recovery generally depends on the recipient voluntarily returning them. Malware can also replace a copied address, so verify the entire address rather than checking only its first and last characters.
- Open the receiving wallet and copy or display its address using the wallet’s built-in receive function.
- On the sending device, compare the full address with the destination wallet. If you use a hardware wallet, confirm the address on the device’s trusted screen.
- Check the amount, network and fee shown by the wallet before approving.
- Send a small test amount when the destination is new or the balance is significant.
- Wait for the wallet and recipient to show the transaction status before treating the transfer as complete.
Never disclose a private key or recovery phrase to supposed support staff. Requests for those secrets are a strong indication of fraud, regardless of the logo, urgency or website used.

| Decision point | Exchange custody | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The exchange or its custody system | The wallet owner |
| Primary dependency | Provider security, solvency, account access and withdrawal policies | Owner’s key protection, backups and transaction accuracy |
| Typical convenience | High for buying, selling and trading through one account | Requires wallet setup, backup management and address checks |
| Account recovery | Provider identity checks and current recovery rules | Wallet-specific recovery information, usually a phrase and any required additional settings |
| Common failure mode | Hack, insolvency, frozen account or blocked withdrawal | Lost or exposed key, destroyed backup, malware or mistaken transaction |
| Best-fitting use | Funds needed for active trading or where managed access is preferred | Savings or spending where direct control is worth the added responsibility |
Neither column is risk-free. The difference is where the critical decisions and failure points reside: with a service in the first case, and with you in the second.

How to move Bitcoin from an exchange to your wallet
- Finish setting up and backing up the destination wallet before opening the exchange withdrawal screen.
- Use the wallet’s receive function to generate an address. Confirm that the exchange supports the same Bitcoin network and address type.
- Paste the address into the exchange form, then compare the full string with the wallet’s displayed address. If the wallet or exchange supports address labeling or allowlists, use them.
- Enter a small test amount and review the exchange’s fee, minimum and any withdrawal hold shown at that moment.
- Approve the withdrawal using the exchange’s authentication process. Do not enter your wallet recovery phrase anywhere on the exchange website.
- Wait for the transaction to receive network confirmations and appear in the destination wallet.
- Only after the test succeeds, consider moving the remaining amount. Keep the transaction record without storing secret recovery data alongside it.
Withdrawal limits, holds, fees and identity checks are provider- and location-specific. They can change, so rely on the exchange’s current withdrawal screen and terms rather than an old tutorial.
When multisignature makes sense
Multisignature, often called multisig, requires approvals from multiple independent keys before a transaction can spend funds. It can reduce dependence on one key, one device or one physical location. For example, losing one signer’s device does not necessarily make the funds inaccessible if the wallet’s policy allows the remaining signers to authorize recovery.
The trade-off is operational complexity. Every signer needs a backup and a documented procedure, and restoring the wallet requires preserving the policy details as well as the individual keys. Multisig is therefore an advanced option for people prepared to manage several independent components, not a default requirement for a first wallet. Bitcoin.org includes multisignature among the security approaches discussed in its wallet-security guidance.
A decision checklist
- Choose exchange custody when you prioritize a familiar trading account, need frequent exchange access and are comfortable relying on the provider’s security and withdrawal policies.
- Choose self-custody when direct control matters more than convenience and you can protect a recovery backup, keep software current and verify every transaction.
- Use a combination when you need a small, accessible spending balance but want longer-term savings separated from an internet-connected device.
- Start with an amount small enough to learn the wallet and recovery process without putting essential savings at risk.
- Revisit the arrangement when your trading frequency, technical confidence, family access needs or risk tolerance changes.
The right storage method is the one whose failure modes you understand and whose recovery steps you can actually perform. Control is valuable only when it is paired with a working backup and disciplined transaction checks.
