Store spare household batteries in their original packaging, in a cool, dry indoor place at ordinary room temperature, away from heat, sunlight, moisture and loose metal. Do not refrigerate or freeze modern household batteries as a general shelf-life strategy: condensation can damage cells or corrode contacts. The right storage life depends on chemistry, and a manufacturer’s shelf-life figure is an estimate for stated conditions—not a promise that every battery will work like new for that long.
How should you store batteries?
For most removable household batteries, the practical default is simple: keep them dry, indoors and at a stable, ordinary room temperature. A cupboard or drawer inside the home is usually a better choice than a hot garage, a damp basement, a sunny windowsill or a spot near a heater. Heat accelerates capacity loss during storage, while moisture and temperature swings can contribute to corrosion or condensation.
Keep cells in their manufacturer’s packaging when you can. Packaging helps keep terminals from touching conductive objects and makes it easier to keep cells of the same type together. If batteries are loose, put them in a nonconductive container with separate spaces or another arrangement that prevents terminals from touching coins, keys, paperclips or other metal. Panasonic recommends a resin carry case for eneloop Ni-MH cells; a suitable AA/AAA case is an optional organizer, not a requirement.

- Avoid: direct sun, hot or damp locations, and large temperature swings.
- Separate: loose batteries from metal and from one another so terminals cannot make contact.
- Keep together: cells in their original packs when practical, especially rechargeable cells supplied as a set.
- Remove: batteries from devices that will sit unused for an extended period.
Storage conditions matter more than elaborate packaging. A closed drawer does not make a hot or damp location suitable, and a storage case cannot restore a cell that has already lost capacity. For rechargeable Ni-MH cells, Panasonic gives an ideal storage temperature range of 10–25 °C and advises against storage above 35 °C, high humidity, direct sunlight and refrigerated conditions. See Panasonic’s eneloop storage guidance.

Think about the storage spot over the full year, not just on the day you put batteries away. A place that is cool in winter may become hot in summer; locations exposed to sunlight, heating equipment or wide temperature swings are poor choices. A dry indoor shelf or drawer is a straightforward option because it avoids many of these conditions without requiring special equipment. Keep the packs where they are easy to find, but not somewhere they can be mixed into a drawer of loose metal objects.
For loose cells, the goal is not simply to keep them tidy: it is to keep terminals from contacting metal or other terminals. Use a nonconductive case or organizer that keeps the cells apart. Panasonic recommends original packaging for eneloop cells because it keeps same-date cells together and reduces accidental contact with metal; it also recommends a resin carry case for storage or transport. A case is optional, and the packaging or device maker’s instructions should take precedence over assumptions about a container.
Should you store batteries in the refrigerator?
No—not as a general way to extend the shelf life of modern household batteries. Energizer says refrigeration or freezing is neither required nor recommended for batteries produced today. It warns that moving cold batteries into warmer air can create condensation, which may corrode contacts or damage labels and seals. Panasonic gives a similar condensation caution for eneloop rechargeable batteries. See the Energizer non-rechargeable battery FAQ and Panasonic’s eneloop FAQ.

Instead of trying to make a refrigerator substitute for good storage, use a stable indoor location away from heat. If batteries have been kept somewhere cold, allow them to return to room temperature before use and avoid exposing them to moisture. A freezer is not a better option: it adds the same condensation concern and is not a recommended general storage method in this guidance.
The key distinction is between a cool, dry room and cold storage that can introduce condensation as conditions change. A refrigerator does not remove the need to protect cells from moisture, and the cited manufacturer guidance does not recommend it as a storage shortcut. The same applies to a freezer: do not assume colder means longer-lasting. For household batteries, ordinary room-temperature storage is the practical default.
How long can batteries be stored?
There is no single shelf-life figure for all batteries. Chemistry, temperature and the manufacturer’s stated conditions matter, and a shelf-life estimate does not guarantee that an individual cell will retain full capacity or perform well in every device. Energizer’s 2012 FAQ gives these approximate room-temperature ranges for cylindrical primary (non-rechargeable) batteries. It defines room temperature as about 70 °F (21 °C) and notes that prolonged elevated-temperature storage shortens life.
| Battery type | Approximate storage life stated by Energizer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cylindrical alkaline | 5–10 years | Approximate range at about 21 °C in Energizer’s 2012 FAQ; not a guarantee for every brand, format, lot or storage environment. |
| Cylindrical carbon-zinc | 3–5 years | Approximate range at about 21 °C in Energizer’s 2012 FAQ; elevated-temperature storage shortens shelf life. |
| Cylindrical lithium primary | 10–15 years | Approximate range at about 21 °C in Energizer’s 2012 FAQ; it applies to cylindrical primary cells, not lithium-ion device packs. |
These figures are useful for understanding why chemistry matters, not for deciding that every cell will be dependable on a particular date. The ranges come from a general manufacturer FAQ published in 2012, and actual storage conditions vary. Check the date or shelf-life information on the battery packaging and follow the cell maker’s guidance for that product.

The ranges are not a ranking of all batteries or brands. They describe approximate storage life for specified cylindrical primary chemistries under room-temperature conditions in Energizer’s FAQ. The 10–15-year figure, for example, refers to cylindrical lithium primary cells. It should not be used to estimate the storage life of a lithium-ion battery pack in a phone, laptop, power tool or other device.

Temperature is an important part of interpreting each number. Energizer’s figures use about 21 °C, or 70 °F, as room temperature and specifically cautions that prolonged elevated-temperature storage shortens shelf life. A package date or manufacturer estimate therefore does not erase the effect of where the cells were kept. Nor does a date by itself promise that a cell will retain full capacity or meet the demands of every device.
When comparing a shelf-life claim with another, check what chemistry it covers, whether the cell is primary or rechargeable, the stated temperature and humidity conditions, and the basis of any capacity-retention figure. A product-specific capacity claim and an approximate storage-life range are not interchangeable. Always read the actual cell’s packaging: the published ranges here are not universal guarantees for every size, brand, production lot or environment.
Primary batteries and rechargeable Ni-MH cells behave differently
Single-use alkaline, carbon-zinc and lithium primary cells
These batteries are designed for one discharge cycle and should not be recharged unless the cell is explicitly labeled rechargeable. Energizer’s approximate shelf-life ranges above are for cylindrical primary cells stored at about 21 °C. They should not be extended to every size, brand or environment. In particular, the 10–15-year lithium range is for cylindrical lithium primary batteries; it does not describe the lithium-ion packs inside phones, laptops, power tools or similar devices.

For primary cells, the useful planning question is not only “How many years does the chemistry last?” but also “What does this particular package say, and how was it stored?” Keep the cells dry and away from heat, then check the date or other shelf-life information on the pack before relying on them. If a device is important, a broad approximate range is not a substitute for compatible cells in suitable condition.
Rechargeable Ni-MH cells
Rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries lose charge while sitting unused. Panasonic says unused chemical batteries self-discharge and that higher temperature increases the rate; it also notes that Ni-MH batteries generally lose more charge in storage than dry batteries. So even when a stored Ni-MH battery remains safe and physically sound, it may need recharging before use. Store it in a cool, dry place within the maker’s recommended conditions rather than assuming its charge will remain unchanged.
Panasonic’s ideal storage temperature range for eneloop is 10–25 °C. It advises against storage above 35 °C, high humidity, direct sunlight and refrigerated storage where condensation may form. Those specific limits are Panasonic’s guidance for eneloop; do not treat them as universal product specifications for every rechargeable cell. For another brand or model, consult the maker’s instructions.
Panasonic’s standard eneloop product page states that the battery retains 70% after ten years. That is a product-specific capacity-retention estimate: Panasonic bases it on IEC 61951-2 (7.3.2), at 20 °C, compared with minimum capacity, and says results vary with use conditions. It is not a universal promise for all rechargeable batteries or a prediction of how long a cell will power a particular device. See Panasonic’s eneloop product information.
That 70% figure and Energizer’s primary-cell ranges answer different questions. Energizer gives approximate storage-life ranges for cylindrical non-rechargeable batteries at about 21 °C. Panasonic describes a capacity-retention estimate for one rechargeable product at 20 °C under a specified test method. Comparing the numbers without their chemistry, conditions and test basis can give a misleading impression. Neither claim means every cell will have full capacity after the stated period or guarantee run time in a particular device.

Prepare batteries and devices for long-term storage
1. Sort cells by chemistry and purpose
Keep primary batteries separate from rechargeables so you do not mistake one for the other. Check the label before charging: only cells explicitly marked rechargeable should go in a charger, and rechargeable cells should be charged with an approved charger. A single-use battery that is put into a charger may leak or otherwise create a hazard.
Grouping cells by chemistry and size also makes it easier to choose a compatible set for a device. Keep cells that belong together identifiable rather than combining loose batteries whose ages, types or charge states are unknown. When in doubt, use the package and device instructions to confirm what the equipment requires.
2. Keep loose terminals from making contact
Leave cells in their original packs where practical. If you need to store loose cells, use a nonconductive case or organizer that holds them apart. A battery rolling around in a drawer with coins, keys or paperclips can have its terminals bridged by metal. Energizer warns that a short circuit can make a battery very hot and increase leakage and personal-injury risk. Do not carry loose batteries in a pocket or bag with metal objects.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOriginal packaging is a useful choice because it separates the batteries and preserves their grouping; it is not a reason to leave them in a hot or damp location. If a package is opened, transfer the loose cells to a suitable nonconductive container or arrange them so their terminals cannot touch metal or one another. A battery case may help, but it is not a mandatory purchase and should not be assumed suitable unless it actually keeps cells separated.
3. Remove batteries from equipment that will be idle
Take batteries out of devices that will remain unused for a long time, including seasonal equipment. Panasonic warns that prolonged in-device storage can result in leakage and terminal damage. Store the removed batteries separately under the conditions appropriate to their chemistry, and consult the device instructions if they specify a different procedure.
This step matters because storing a battery inside a device is not the same as storing a spare in its package. If equipment will sit unused for an extended period, removing the cells reduces the chance that a leaking cell will damage the terminals. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions for the device itself, especially if it has a product-specific storage procedure.
4. Keep device sets consistent
When a device uses multiple cells, do not mix old and new batteries or cells of different types, brands, ages or charge states. Replace a set together when the device instructions call for it. Energizer warns that mixing chemistries, brands or fresh and used cells can force-discharge the weakest battery and increase leakage risk; Panasonic also advises against mixing cells. If a device has unusual battery requirements, follow its manual rather than assembling a set from whatever cells are on hand.
Using a matched set avoids making one cell work alongside batteries with different histories or charge states. In a multi-cell device, a weaker cell can be forced to discharge by the others, which raises leakage risk. Do not top up a set with a single old or unverified cell simply because it fits. Follow the device instructions and replace cells as a compatible set where directed.

5. Organize stock so older cells are used first
For an emergency supply, keep batteries in labeled packages and group them by chemistry and size. If you buy replacements before the old stock is used, place the older, still-in-date package where it will be selected first. This simple rotation makes it easier to see what you have and reduces the chance that a forgotten pack sits unused for years. It does not extend a cell’s shelf life; storage conditions and the manufacturer’s stated date still matter.
Keep the package information accessible instead of moving every cell into an unmarked container. Labels help distinguish primary batteries from rechargeables and let you check the manufacturer’s date or shelf-life information when you need a set. For cells supplied together, keeping the pack intact also helps preserve the original grouping.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check batteries that have been stored
Before relying on long-stored batteries, inspect their condition and check the instructions for the device in which you plan to use them. Do not use a cell that appears damaged or is leaking. If leakage has occurred in a device, follow the device maker’s cleaning and safety instructions rather than putting fresh cells into a contaminated compartment.
A tester can help assess whether a battery is usable, but the result has limits. Energizer notes that a loaded battery tester can be more informative than an unloaded voltmeter, while warning that battery testers usually cannot reliably predict remaining run time. A reading therefore cannot guarantee that a cell will last through a long emergency, a high-drain task or a particular device’s operating demands. For critical equipment, use fresh, compatible batteries and follow the equipment maker’s recommendations.
Do not treat a voltage reading as a promise of how long the cell will last. Energizer’s caution is that testers usually cannot reliably predict remaining run time, even though a loaded tester can be more informative than an unloaded voltmeter. The device’s demands matter, so a test result is only one part of deciding whether to rely on a stored battery.
If a stored rechargeable Ni-MH cell has lost charge, recharge it only with a compatible approved charger and use it according to the charger and battery instructions. Do not try to revive a leaking, damaged or otherwise questionable cell by charging it.
What about lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops and tools?
The storage figures and household-cell advice here cover removable primary batteries and Ni-MH rechargeables. They do not establish a detailed storage procedure for lithium-ion packs built into phones, computers, power tools or similar equipment. Those packs have device- and product-specific requirements, so consult the relevant manufacturer’s manual for storage, charge level and long-term care rather than applying the cylindrical lithium primary range or Ni-MH advice to them.

Should I store batteries in the refrigerator?
No, not as a general shelf-life strategy for modern household batteries. Energizer says refrigeration or freezing is not required or recommended for batteries produced today; condensation can corrode contacts or damage labels and seals. Panasonic gives a similar caution for eneloop Ni-MH cells. Choose stable, dry indoor storage instead.
How long can batteries be stored?
It depends on chemistry, temperature, product and storage conditions. Energizer’s 2012 FAQ gives approximate room-temperature ranges at about 21 °C of 5–10 years for cylindrical alkaline, 3–5 years for cylindrical carbon-zinc and 10–15 years for cylindrical lithium primary cells. These are estimates, not guarantees for every cell or environment; check the package for product-specific information.
Do rechargeable batteries lose their charge in storage?
Yes. Panasonic says unused chemical batteries self-discharge and that higher temperature increases the rate; Ni-MH cells generally lose more charge in storage than dry batteries. A stored Ni-MH cell may need recharging before use. Panasonic’s eneloop claim of 70% capacity after ten years is specific to that product and its stated test conditions, not a guarantee for all rechargeables.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I store loose batteries together in a drawer?
Not loose with coins, keys, paperclips or other metal. Metal can bridge terminals and short a cell, which Energizer warns can make it very hot and increase leakage and personal-injury risk. Keep cells in original packaging or a nonconductive case that separates them.
Should I remove batteries from devices I will not use for a while?
Yes, remove them from devices that will remain unused for an extended period, including seasonal equipment, unless the device maker gives different instructions. Panasonic warns that prolonged in-device storage can result in leakage and terminal damage.
Can I mix new and old batteries in a device?
Avoid mixing old and new cells or batteries of different type, brand, age or charge state. Energizer warns that mismatched cells can force-discharge the weakest battery and increase leakage risk. Follow the device instructions and replace a set together when appropriate.
Does a battery tester tell me how long a stored battery will last?
No. Energizer says a loaded tester can be more informative than an unloaded voltmeter, but testers usually cannot reliably predict remaining run time. For critical equipment, use fresh, compatible batteries and follow the equipment maker’s recommendations.
