For storage longer than 30 days, remove a RIDGID 18V battery from the tool and charger, leave it at about 30%–50% charge, and keep it in a dry location below 80°F. Keep the terminals away from metal objects, protect the pack from impact and moisture, and recharge it normally every six months. Use only the recommended RIDGID charger, remove the pack after it is fully charged, and never open or repair a damaged pack yourself.
The procedures below apply to RIDGID 18V lithium-ion packs. The figures come from RIDGID safety guidance; the accessed manual does not state a publication year, so check the manual supplied with your exact battery for any model-specific instructions.
Prepare a RIDGID 18V battery for storage
Storage is different from leaving a battery on a workbench between jobs. If the pack will sit unused for more than 30 days, use this sequence:
- Stop using the pack and check its condition. Do not store a battery that is swollen, cracked, crushed, leaking, sharply struck, or otherwise damaged. Remove a damaged pack from service instead of trying to make it safe by discharging or opening it.
- Remove it from the tool and charger. A pack intended for extended storage should not remain installed in a tool or sitting on a charger.
- Set the charge to approximately 30%–50%. If it is full after a job, use the tool normally until it reaches that range; do not deliberately run a healthy pack completely flat.
- Let the pack return to a normal temperature. Do not put a hot pack straight into a closed container or attempt to charge a pack that is outside the charger’s accepted temperature range.
- Place it in a dry, stable location below 80°F. Keep it out of direct heat, damp areas, chemical vapors, and places where it can be dropped or crushed.
- Prevent terminal contact. Separate the battery from coins, keys, nails, screws, paper clips, loose tools, and other conductive objects.
- Record the storage date. Schedule a normal recharge in six months.
These steps are for storage, not for daily use. A battery used again within a few days can be charged normally for the next job, then removed from the charger when full.

Short pauses between jobs
For an overnight or weekend pause, switch off the tool, remove the pack if the tool may be bumped or stored in a vehicle, and keep the terminals protected. Avoid leaving a battery where temperatures can become extreme. The longer the idle period, the more important it is to follow the 30%–50% charge and six-month schedule.
Choose the right charge level for long-term storage
RIDGID’s reviewed battery manual recommends storing a pack at 30%–50% charge when it will be unused for longer than 30 days. This is a storage target, not a requirement to measure an exact percentage with a meter. The pack’s fuel-gauge lights are an estimate; stop charging or using the battery when the indicator is in the approximate middle range.
If the battery is fully charged
Do not leave a fully charged pack on the charger just because it is going into storage. Use the battery for normal work until its indicator is roughly 30%–50%, then remove it from the tool. If using the tool solely to lower the charge would create a safety risk, store the pack separately and follow the manual supplied with that model rather than forcing a discharge.

Charge it normally with the recommended RIDGID charger until it reaches the storage range. Do not deliberately store a pack at zero charge. A pack that will not accept a normal charge should be treated as a troubleshooting or service issue, not prepared for storage by opening it.
Recharge every six months
For extended storage, put a calendar reminder six months after the storage date. Remove the pack, inspect it, and charge it normally before returning it to storage. If it has become hot, swollen, cracked, wet, or otherwise damaged, stop and remove it from service. The six-month interval is the interval stated in the reviewed RIDGID guidance; it is not a promise that every pack will retain the same charge for that entire period.

Use the charger safely
Can a RIDGID 18V battery stay on the charger?
No. The reviewed RIDGID manual says to remove the pack from the charger once it is fully charged and ready for use. Charging should be supervised according to the charger and battery instructions rather than used as a permanent storage method.
Use only the recommended RIDGID charger for the pack. Do not substitute an unapproved charger, modify the charger, or bypass its protective controls. A charger-and-battery kit can be convenient, but the charger still has to be the model approved for the battery system.
What if charging does not start?
A pack that is too hot or too cold may not begin charging. This is a protective behavior: allow the battery to return to the charger’s acceptable temperature range, then try again. Do not force the pack onto the charger, defeat a temperature interlock, or charge it outside the specified range. If a battery at a normal temperature still will not charge, remove it from service and follow RIDGID’s service instructions.
Control the storage environment
Temperature
For storage longer than 30 days, keep the battery below 80°F. Choose a location with a stable temperature rather than one that repeatedly heats and cools, such as a vehicle, attic, or uninsulated shed. Keep the pack away from heaters, hot machinery, direct sun, and any source of flame. Do not try to cool or heat a pack rapidly before charging.
Moisture, dust, and chemicals
Store the pack dry and away from water, condensation, heavy dust, and chemical vapors. A dry indoor shelf or enclosed, nonconductive container is preferable to a damp floor or an area where solvents, fuels, or corrosive products are stored. Keep the battery clean enough that dirt cannot interfere with the terminals, but do not wash, immerse, spray, or soak it.

Impact and crushing
Place the pack where it cannot fall, be stepped on, or be compressed by tools. A battery can be unsafe even when the outer case appears only lightly marked. RIDGID guidance treats a dropped, crushed, sharply struck, or otherwise damaged pack as unpredictable; remove it from service rather than testing it repeatedly.

Prevent terminal short circuits
The exposed contacts must not touch conductive objects. A short circuit can occur when a loose coin, key, nail, screw, paper clip, or another metal item bridges the terminals. Store each pack so that its contacts are physically separated from loose metal, and do not carry an unprotected battery in a pocket, tool bag compartment, or drawer containing hardware.
| Storage setup | Temperature stability | Moisture protection | Terminal isolation | Impact protection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original or purpose-made battery case | Use only in a location that remains below 80°F; a case does not control temperature. | Helps keep out incidental dust and splashes only if it remains dry and closed. | Best when contacts are recessed or each pack has a separate compartment; verify the fit. | Better than an open shelf when the case prevents movement and is not overloaded. |
| Clean, nonconductive tool box with individual compartments | Provides no cooling; place it in a temperature-stable room. | Can shield against incidental moisture, but it is not a substitute for a dry room. | Use dividers or sleeves so terminals cannot touch hardware or another pack. | Useful if the box is secured and padded so packs cannot slide or be crushed. |
| Open shelf or drawer | Acceptable only in a consistently cool location below 80°F. | Offers little protection from spills, condensation, or dust. | Requires deliberate separation from every metal object nearby. | Provides little protection from falls, dropped tools, or compression. |
Regardless of the container, the battery itself still needs a dry environment, terminal separation, and protection from impact. Never seal a hot or wet pack in a container.
Inspect and maintain the pack without opening it
Maintenance means inspection, clean handling, correct charging, and timely removal from service. It does not mean replacing cells or repairing the battery case.
Inspection checklist
- Look for swelling, bulging, cracks, punctures, melted plastic, discoloration, leakage, or a loose case.
- Check for evidence of a hard drop, crushing, or a sharp impact.
- Confirm that the contacts are dry and free of dirt or corrosion.
- Notice unusual heat, odor, smoke, hissing, or rapid loss of charge during use or charging.
- Verify that the battery is the correct pack for the tool and charger.
Stop using the pack if any warning sign appears. Do not sand, scrape, bend, pry, or reshape the contacts, and do not apply liquids or solvents. If the exterior is dirty, follow the cleaning instructions for the exact model; never immerse the battery or open its housing.

Never attempt cell-level repair
Do not open, disassemble, crush, burn, modify, or attempt to replace individual cells. Lithium-ion packs contain multiple cells and protective electronics; a mistake inside the case can create a delayed fire or injury risk. A pack that has been opened or modified is not a safe do-it-yourself project. Contact RIDGID service or use the disposal route described below.
What to do with a dropped, swollen, or otherwise damaged battery
Remove it from service immediately
Place a damaged pack away from people, buildings, vehicles, and combustible materials while you arrange service or disposal. Do not put it back on a charger to see whether it still works, and do not install it in another tool for a comparison test. Avoid handling a swollen or leaking pack more than necessary.
If the pack is hot, smoking, or burning
Move people away and call local emergency services. Do not puncture, crush, or carry a smoking or burning battery. Follow emergency responders’ instructions and do not resume use because the smoke stops.
Transporting a damaged pack
Ask the local recycling or hazardous-waste program how it wants a damaged lithium-ion battery delivered. Keep it separate from other batteries and metal objects, and follow any packaging or drop-off instructions it provides. Do not place a damaged pack in ordinary household trash or a curbside recycling bin unless the local authority explicitly says that stream accepts it.

Recycle an old RIDGID 18V lithium-ion battery
- Remove the pack from service. Do not keep using a battery simply because it still powers a tool.
- Cover the terminals with heavy-duty tape. Cover the contacts so they cannot touch one another or metal during handling. Do not wrap a hot, leaking, or smoking pack; obtain emergency or hazardous-material guidance first.
- Find an approved local route. Contact your municipality, household hazardous-waste program, battery recycler, or RIDGID service channel and ask whether it accepts lithium-ion tool batteries and whether damaged packs require a separate process.
- Follow the program’s packaging and transport directions. Requirements differ by location, especially for swollen or impact-damaged packs.
- Keep it out of ordinary trash. Do not put a lithium-ion pack in a household garbage bag, incinerator, or an unapproved recycling stream.
Terminal tape reduces the chance of a short during handling; it does not make a damaged battery safe or change which disposal route is appropriate.

Replacing a RIDGID 18V battery
Choose a replacement by exact compatibility, not by appearance or a similar voltage label. RIDGID’s product information lists 2.5Ah and 5.0Ah 18V packs, as well as battery-and-charger kits and an 18V charger. Capacity affects expected runtime and size, but it does not override the tool’s compatibility requirements.
| Check | What to verify before purchase | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact RIDGID 18V model compatibility | Match the battery model and the tool’s approved battery list; do not rely only on “18V” in a listing. | Physical fit, electrical communication, and charger compatibility can differ between products. |
| Amp-hour capacity | Confirm whether the pack is 2.5Ah, 5.0Ah, or another capacity stated for that exact model. | Capacity changes runtime, weight, and charging time; a larger number is not automatically the right choice for every tool. |
| Warranty | Read the current warranty terms for the exact battery and seller. | Coverage, registration rules, exclusions, and duration can vary. |
| Seller authenticity | Buy through an authorized or otherwise verifiable source and inspect the packaging and model markings. | Counterfeit, used, or incorrectly labeled packs may lack the expected protections and support. |
| Charger | Use the recommended RIDGID charger for the pack; confirm compatibility if buying a kit. | An incompatible charger can prevent normal charging or defeat the intended protection system. |
If a listing does not state the exact model compatibility, amp-hour rating, warranty terms, or seller identity, treat that omission as a reason to verify before ordering rather than guessing.
Troubleshoot common storage and charging problems
The battery will not charge after storage
- Remove it from the charger and inspect it for swelling, cracks, leakage, or impact damage.
- Let the pack reach a normal temperature; a hot or cold pack may be temporarily prevented from charging.
- Confirm that the charger is the recommended RIDGID model and that the contacts are dry and clean.
- Try one normal charging cycle while following the charger instructions. Do not bypass a warning light or temperature protection.
- If charging still does not begin, stop using the pack and contact RIDGID service or arrange approved recycling.
The battery loses charge quickly
Verify that it was stored near the recommended 30%–50% level and recharged at the six-month interval. Check for heat exposure, moisture, impact, or visible damage. A sudden change in runtime is a reason for service or replacement, not a reason to open the case or repeatedly deep-discharge the pack.
The charger or battery becomes unusually hot
Stop charging, disconnect the equipment as instructed, and move the battery away from combustible materials if it can be done safely. Allow it to cool naturally. Do not cover it, immerse it, puncture it, or continue charging to “finish” the cycle. If heat returns or any other damage is present, remove the pack from service.
The battery was stored for more than six months without a recharge
Inspect it before connecting the charger. If it is dry, intact, and at a normal temperature, use the recommended charger and follow its normal charging process. If it is swollen, leaking, hot, damaged, or refuses to charge, stop and use RIDGID service or a local hazardous-waste route.
